Hi Ann, To my current knowledge I am not related however I will forward your message to some peolple who may be. The Bowles/Bowls/Boles/Bolls have a very active group in research and you might like to subscribe to this mailing list BOWLES-L@rootsweb.com . We are also involved in a DNA project for Bowles. There are many Bowles from the Southern States so I think you should have good luck in making connections. Best Regards, Randi Bowles-Meentzen Ann Dickerson <annarayd@yahoo.com> wrote: Randi, I got your name from the Boles-Bowles Rootweb and was wondering if you are related to John Marshall Boles. He died in Fort Smith AR-murdered. I have heard he was born in TN but also lived in NC. Not sure, some say his father was Joseph and some say John. There is a town in AR with the Boles name. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Ann Dickerson __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Yes Gracie, both of those marriages were in Franklin Co,Va.The PRESTON'S were Quaker's in Calvert Co,Md. And I believe the Bolling's were too? What I'm getting at is these people in Franklin Co seem to have been in Calvert Co,Md at some time. I have tracked these people from Md through Carolina, Spotsylvania counties in Va before Franklin Co and other counties in Va. The reason I asked the question about William Bowles in Carolina Co is because the pension for Betsy Bowles, wife of George Bowles was in the name of Betsy BOWLER.There might be a reason for that? Maybe he was a Bowles born BOWLER then back to Bowles? Something to think about? William was a BOWLER in Carolina Co,Va. Laura Morrow (Dwali30@aol.com) asked me to post her family's information. This is not my family so if you want to know more, write to Laura directly as she's not a member of our list. Below is all she has at the moment. Yours, Linne Sam L. BOWLES (wife unknown), had: Nelles L. BOWLES, b. 1844 in GA, d. 1900, m. Cerrilla ROOTS (1848-1926). The 1820 Franklin Co VA census was recorded in semi-alphabetical order, that is all the surnames beginning with B were grouped together. This is unfortunate for us in that it does not tell us exactly who lived near whom. We can however glean some information from what is available. On page 3, Jeremiah is the 5th name listed, and Ann is the 7th name. Between them is Susannah Bird. Then further down the page, the 21st name is Reuben Bowles followed immediately by William Bowles. On page 5, Joseph Bowles is listed 12th; William is 37th. On page 6, George Jr. is 4th; George Sr. is 10th. It is my GUESS that the census recorder had before him the original lists and he went through them, collecting and listing all the individuals whose surname began with B. Thus, while we can't be certain exactly how close together different ones lived, we can get a feel for it. I suspect that Jeremiah and Ann are related; perhaps, given her age, that she was the widow of his brother - how's that for a guess! Reuben and William on page 3 are probably related, since they are listed together. Reuben is 26-44, William is 18-25. I don't know their actual ages, but if Reuben were in his forties and William in his early 20's, they could be father and son. Remember that I am guessing here. The Joseph and William on page 5 may be related, but the distance between their names keeps us from making that guess at this point. Feel free to tell me how dumb my guesses are! I am afraid I don't know anything about this William Bowles. The Jeremiah Bowles, born 1816, was born in Franklin County, and then moved over to Putnam Co, VA/WV by the 1850 census. With the name of Jeremiah, I beleive it's a strong possibility that this elder Jeremiah, who md Elizabeth Martin was his father. These Franklin County Bowles puzzle me. I see these are listed by page number, so does this give us a clue as to how they are grouped? We have page 3, 5 and 6, and with Jeremiah, Ann, Reuben and William being on the same page, I do wonder if or how they could be connected. ----- Original Message ----- From: <leathel@sbcglobal.net> To: <BOWLES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 29, 2005 10:54 AM Subject: Bowles, 1820 Franklin County VA Census > 1820 Franklin County VA Census > page 3 > Jeremiah Bowles - 200010-30110 > Ann Bowles - 100000-21010 > Reuben Bowles - 000010-00010 > William Bowles - 100100-00010 > page 5 > Joseph Bowles - 210010-31110 > William Bowles - 120101-11001 > page 6 > George Bowles Jr. - 000010-00110 > George Bowles Sr. - 000001-00001 > > We know that George Bowles Sr is George Bowles and Betsy Arthur. I think I may have shared this information before, but maybe not. If two participants match 25/25 on the 25 marker test, then there is an increasingly strong probability that they share a common ancestor. Here are the percentages: 100 years - 61.17% 200 years - 84.92% 300 years - 94.15% 400 years - 97.73% 500 years - 99.12% 600 years - 99.66% Using kits 30760 and 29409 as examples, since they each can trace back to an ancestor born in the early 1800's in the same area of Virginia, which is about 200 years ago, there is a strong possibility that they are within finding one or two generations back to their common ancestor. Given that their known earliest ancestors are named Jeremiah and Joseph, I'd be looking pretty hard at the men in Franklin Co VA in 1820 named Jeremiah and Joseph who were known to have male children the right age to be born in the early 1800's. Hope this helps. Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]
We have three additional sets of results to report today. Kits 30760, 31654, and 31906 each received their 13-25 marker results. See the web page at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/bowlesdna.html for the updated results. It has now been shown with a 25/25 match that kit 30760 and kit 29409 share a common Bowles ancestor. Kit 30760 traces back to Jeremiah Bowles, born 1816 in Franklin Co VA. Kit 29409 goes back to Joseph L. Bowles who was born about 1818, perhaps in Henry County VA. Kit 31906 now has his 13-25 markers, so we need to wait for kit 34109 to receive his. Recall that they matched 11/12 on the first 12 markers, and both claim William and Sarah (Gum) Bowles for ancestors. Kit 31654 continues to be an enigma. He traces back to Alexander H. Bowles who was in Henry County VA, but doesn't yet seem to match up with any others from that area. We definitely need additional folks to test in this area. Here is some census data that might be of interest to those searching in the Franklin Co VA area. 1820 Franklin County VA Census page 3 Jeremiah Bowles - 200010-30110 Ann Bowles - 100000-21010 Reuben Bowles - 000010-00010 William Bowles - 100100-00010 page 5 Joseph Bowles - 210010-31110 William Bowles - 120101-11001 page 6 George Bowles Jr. - 000010-00110 George Bowles Sr. - 000001-00001 Of particular interest may be the Jeremiah Bowles and the Joseph Bowles who each had two sons under 10. Tent shows and the sawdust ring were Mr. WHITBECK's mentors in the immediate years after he left Rochester. Later he became advance agent and manager of many legitimate attractions, ranging from Charles F. BLANEY's "Queen of the White Slaves" to a Paderewski concert tour. A week ago Mr. WHITBECK was director of publicity for the West Coast Theaters in Northern California. Today he is publicity director for the entire chain, more than 250 theaters. In announcing Mr. WHITBECK's promotion, A. M. BOWLES, manager of the northern division, said: "Frank WHITBECK's ability in appealing to the motion picture public is conceded to be supreme. He knows how to talk to the public intimately, and our patrons have come to have faith in what he has promised them, because he has spoken in terms of truth and understanding." Mr. WHITBECK became publicity manager for the Warfield Theater five years ago, and soon afterward ascended to the managership of the northern division of the chain. He has been a theater man ever since he was a kid. After leaving Rochester Mr. WHITBECK's first job was as a bill poster for the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Another phase of work at which Mr. WHITBECK is said to excel in the writing of composite ads for West Coast attractions. ----<>---- DEATHS Mrs. Ida BROWNE died yesterday at her home, 627 Park Avenue. Leathel, Thanks for posting this. The information I have in my data file on this line is taken from various other sources, so I don't vouch for its reliability. I probably should decouple the Pasquotank NC info from the Maryland info because I don't think the relationship is based on good evidence. I decided originally to keep it together so I would have a way of keeping up with possible migration theories. I wish we could find someone from the David Bowles of Pasquotank line to participate in the Bowles DNA project. That might be very helpful. Brenda
