    3. Thanks, Charles, I did have some of that information, but not all. However, I am supplementing it below from my Family Tree Maker 2005 files. 3. Sorry the DNA won't work. All of my immediate Bowles ancestors were female. I was born and raised in and around Atlanta, and moved to NC in my twenties (now age 62). All of my known Bowles ancestors came from Meriwether County, GA, and before that were probably in Greene, Putnam, Oglethorpe, Wilkes, and/or Taliaferro Counties in GA. Before that probably NC and/or VA, but not yet able to make any sure connections. Mike, The Bowles DNA project is very easy to get into and is being managed by Charlie Hartley who is a member of this list. Unfortunately, you would not be a candidate for testing because your line runs through a female. The test must be done on someone who descends through a direct male lineage -- i.e. male Bowles to male Bowles to male Bowles, etc. Maybe as time goes on, a male descendent can be found for your line. Also, that you are in Johnston Co. puts you exactly in the right place. If your John was part of my Benjamin's family, then they were all in Franklin Co. NC before moving to Georgia (in Benjamin's case, moving to Montgomery Co. NC). I have some records from Franklin Co. that I am glad to share. There was a John Bowles mentioned in these records. But, unfortunately, I can't say definitely that this is the same John who later appeared in Georgia. Just let me know when you are ready to get more information. Brenda

    3. Dear Brenda, Thanks so much for the material you sent. You must be a night owl, like me. I suspected some of the connections that you have might be correct, but had no proof and no solid information. I will look the information over and send you what I have on the same individuals tomorrow. I can tell you that Nelson Bowles, Sr., son of John, was married twice. His first wife, Elizabeth Strozier, died about 1833 in Meriwether--last time I was at GA archives I copied from microfilm the information about her estate. Nelson Sr. was of course her executor. I am descended from his second wife Sarah Elizabeth Reid, through their son, my great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson "Jack" Bowles, b. 1840 d. 1913 in Meriwether Co. I knew Andrew Jackson Bowles' second wife, who was my great-grandmother, Emma Margaret Evans Bowles. She died in 1953 when I was age 11. His first wife was Sarah Elizabeth Robertson or Robinson. I guess I have the Bowles DNA in me, but would not know how to get it tested, or where. I will also give some adjusted dates on the descendants of Nelson Bowles Sr. that I know about, when I search my records tomorrow. Thanks again. Most charts place Nelson Bowles as a son of John Bowles (wife unknown) who appeared in GA around the end of the 1700s. I am interested in this John Bowles because I think he may be part of my Bowles line from North Carolina. The connection comes through what I know about a William Bowles who served in the Revolutionary War with my ancestor, Benjamin Bowles who died in Montgomery Co. NC in 1844. I have records that shows a very close relationship between this William Bowles (m. Sally Biven in NC) and my Benjamin. John Bowles, father of Nelson, arrived in GA about the same time as William and owned land in the same general area (the Wilkes/Green Co. area), so there is a suggestion that these two guys were related. There also was a Jesse Bowles living in this area of GA. I have records showing a Jesse Bowles who served along with William and Benjamin in the NC line, Revolutionary War. This could be the same Jesse. I can share with you what I have. Maybe you could use my information to further your research. I will copy below what I have on John Bowles (with warning that my chart comes from other sources and I can't vouch for its reliability). You will see that I only have wife Elizabeth Dozier in my chart. Is it possible that you know a living male descendent of your Bowles line? It would be really useful if we could get your line into the Bowles DNA project. My line has already been tested, so if you have someone who could be tested we might find a match. 1. Bowles in TX history site

    3. If you want to learn about Texas history in its many incarnations, this is a great website to get you started. It's from the point of view of those of Celtic origins who influenced Texas history. If you want to skim over that idea, it's still a great read. Not having been educated in Texas, I could never quite connect the various pieces of who fought where and what Mexico was doing at the time, and where the various Indian tribes fit in, and how the settlements' names changed. This site makes it all understandable, as complex as it was. William Augustus Bowles is in here, as is Chief John Bowles, and Henry Smith, my ancestor who was the first provisional governor of Texas. (If you see mention of him elsewhere, please send it my way.) 2. Charles Hartley
    3. Two announcements... We have a new participant, kit #36318, who traces back to Henry Bowles of Bedford County VA. We will have more information about this line posted on the website shortly. That gives us a total of 23 participants who have joined up in less than six months! We also have new 13-25 marker results posted for kit #34109, and there continues to be a strong likelihood of a match between #34109 and #31906, both of whom trace back to William and Sarah (Gum) Bowles. These two kits show a genetic distance of -2, that is they match on 23 of 25 markers. Given their documented evidence, they are most likely correct in their assumption of this lineage. On another note, several of you have contacted me privately about potential participants that you were hopeful of getting to join us. May I ask you to encourage these folks once again to sign up? Thanks, Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]

    1. Barsheba Bowles, Orange Co, NC 1805
    2. H. Wayne Beck
    3. List, I am going to try a couple of different guesses to identify my Barsheba Bowles of Orange Co, NC in 1805. Perhaps one of you will recognize the proper family. Barsheba is one of my brick walls and I sure could use some help. Barsheba Bowles married Vincent Roberts in Orange Co, NC on 5 Feb 1805. The bondsman was John Henry Foss. From later census data, she was born about 1773 in NC, so she was about age 32 at the time of the marriage. In Vincent Roberts' will on 10 Jan 1816 in Orange Co, NC, he mentions " my wife's daughter Nancy". Her age at the marriage and the fact that she had a daughter who was not the daughter of Vincent, suggests that Bowles (or Bowls) was Barsheba's married name by a previous marriage. Also, in 1811 Vincent Roberts was the bondsman at the marriage of a James Bowles in Orange Co, NC. Could James Bowles be the son of Barsheba? If James Bowles was about 20 years old in 1811, he could have been born about 1791. Barsheba would have been about 18 years old in 1791. Thus, I could be looking for the marriage of a Barsheba Unknown to a Bowles about 1790. This Bowles must have died before 1805, probably in Orange Co, NC. In 1800, I find three Bowles families in Orange Co, NC, James, John and Thomas. In 1790 the Bowles (Bowls) families in Orange Co are William and Thomas. Thomas Bowles died in Orange Co, NC in 1791. This Thomas Bowles may have been born about 1712 in London, England and migrated through MD sometime after 1735. Could Barsheba Bowles have been Barsheba Foss since the bondsman is often a relative? Or Could Barsheba have been Barsheba Henderson? In Vincent Roberts' will, a son, Calvin Henderson Roberts, was the only child listed with a middle name. Also, I noticed that the name Henderson appears in other Bowles descendants names. Do any of you know of a connection of the Foss family or Henderson family with the Bowles (Bowls) family of the Orange Co, NC area? Wayne Beck hwbeck@houston.rr.com

Carpenter" <spcarpenter@ka.net> Subject: The Spencer Greys from the Public Press 14 Dec 1881 Part 3 Joseph Lane was the first Colonel of the Second Indiana Regiment, but being appointed by president Polk, Brigadier General, an election was held while the regiment was camped near this city and Capt. Sanderson was fairly elected, but through the chicanery of certain parties, the votes of the Evansville Rifles were destroyed and the election declared void. The regiment was under command of Lieut. Col. James R. Haddon and Major James A. Cravens until it arrived at Brazos Santiago, where Wm. A. Bowles was elected colonel. We were transported from New Albany to New Orleans on the good steamer Uncle Sam, Captain Charles Van Dusen, who is long since dead. Not withstanding the vicissitudes of a soldier's life then and there begun - for many had left homes of comfort, and tables of luxuries, to sleep upon the hard deck of the steamer and eat off a tin platter fried "sow belly and hard tack", we had a jolly crown. On steamer Uncle Sam was organized the string band that enlivened many an hour either at the camp fire or in the "stag" dance. At New Orleans we encamped for two days, on the battle ground where Gen. Jackson closed the war of 1812, by his signal victory over Packenham; then on the ship Gov. Davis embarked upon the water once more; crossed the gulf of Mexico, and landed at Brazos Santiago, near the mouth of the Rio Grand River. Then it was that Dr. Bowles, a man without one particle of military knowledge, was elected colonel. A greater misfortune could not have befallen us. to be continued . . . Posted by Sue P. 2. I think we might be getting someplace with these Bowles in Franklin Co? It looks to me like George Sr and this William Bowles (page 5) were brothers and that Joseph Bowles would be William's son. Now is Bartlet Bowles another brother to George and William? Anybody have any information on Bartlet Bowles? Leathel, 1820 Franklin County VA Census (page 5) William Bowles - 120101-11001 Joseph Bowles - 210010-31110 (William Joseph Bowles) page 3 Ann Bowles - 100000-21010 Bartlet Bowles married Ann Owen, 13 Nov, 1766 in Goochland Co. Is this Ann Bowles the wife of Bartlet Bowles?
