Linne ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: BLEVINS-L@rootsweb.com From: "Vivian Markley" <vmarkley@woh.rr.com> Subject: List of Participants found in Lib of Va, Lord Dunsmore's War I was searching only for surnames of women thought to have been married to Blevins men during the 1770s. As you can see, I have started to try to identify individuals but have just started. Wanted to get Bedford done first to see if James and Willoughby were identifiable to a certain group at a specific time period. Wanting to compare to other period documents such as 1767 Pittsylvania tithe which is earlier and then later documents to see if there was a migration pattern since these groups were usually small and local. Listed all of Herbert's men that are documented by Lib of Va and there are only 50 specific to him and no Blevins. Will try to look up the other names Jeff put in his article and see if we can glean more from them and post later. If anyone can identify for a fact that any of the men listed below are the "father-in-laws" of Blevins men, please let me know. "Barb's Beauty Salon," was Mum's life-long dream, then a master hairdresser she became. First driving the school bus, then head mechanic Dad became, meeting many students and teachers, who are still familiar with his name. Dad, thanks for the rocking horse, and go-cart you built, Mum, thanks for the hairdoes, handmade dresses and quilts. Thank you both for the mini bike and boat rides we had. William Dye, 70, died peacefully at his home in Halifax on March 15, 2004, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Born in Glace Bay, Bill was the son of Mrs. Dorothy Phalen. He was so proud to call himself a "Cape Bretoner." Bill attended the University of King's College and was ordained as an Anglican Priest in 1961 in St. John's Church, Arichat. Bill served as a student in Meota, Saskatchewan, and in the parishes of Port Hawkesbury and Arichat, Glace Bay; Brooklyn, Queens County; Mahone Bay; and Saint Matthias, Halifax from which he retired in 1996 having served as a faithful priest for 35 years. In the early years of ministry he was known as "Bill the Builder" as he supervised the construction of new church buildings in Port Hawkesbury and Brooklyn, and extensive renovations in Mahone Bay. He liked very much the daily contact with the committees and workers on these projects. Pastoral ministry was the highlight of Bill's vocation - visiting people in their homes and being involved in their lives was most important to him. He also became involved in the broader community in the parishes to which he was appointed. He was instrumental in the formation of the Child Development Centre in Mahone Bay, the Christians for Refugees Committees in Mahone Bay and Halifax, and the Senior Citizens' Organization in Halifax. In his younger years, Bill was very involved in the Children's Aid Society. In his retirement years, Bill enjoyed entertaining in his home, golfing with "the boys," wintering in Florida, and having long conversations with his dear friend of 50 years, Don Ruggles. Bill was extremely proud of his children and was happiest when spending time with them. Bill is survived by his mother, Dorothy Phalen, Glace Bay; his wife of 38 years, Beverley (Moffatt), and their children, Allyson, Halifax; Robert, Bridgewater; Bruce and his wife Kelly and their daughter Sonya, Chester Basin; his brother, Syl Phalen (Cathy) and their children, Jason and Jennifer, Donkin, Cape Breton; brother-in-law, Roy Moffatt (Edythe), their children, Rodney and Rhonda; brother-in-law, Robert Moffatt (Karen) and their children, Ross and Bill's guardian angel, Dr. Susan Moffatt-Bruce, who was so attentive to Uncle Bill; and several cousins in Glace Bay. Bill was predeceased by his stepfather, Charles Phalen. Funeral liturgy was celebrated in Saint Matthias Church, Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 3 p.m., Bishop Fred Hiltz officiated. A private family committal serviced followed. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to Saint Matthias Anglican Church or the Canadian Cancer Society. Dear listers I am looking for the parents of Alfred Ernest White likely born in Old Kent Road, Surrey, England in the 1840s. He immigrated to South Africa and married Anne Rosetta Dalton Brewer in 1865. I found a possible match in the birth certificate of an Alfred Ernest White born Old Kent Road 3 of Feb 1845 to a Francis and Fanny (formerly Bowles) White. In tracing this family for clues I discovered the following. If any of this matches anything you have please pass if on and help me solve the mystery! Other clues are Alfred seems to disappear from British censes after 1861. He named his eldest son Walter FRANCES perhaps after one of the witnesses to his marriage (a Walter) and his father? Thanks for your help, Jessica MORE ON FRANCIS WHTIE FAMILY: Post Office London Directory (Small Edition), 1852 lists a White, Francis, Cooper, Canal Bridge, Old Kent Road 1861 Census lists an 'Alfred E.' between Frederick and Julia. Francis is a Cooper at this time residing at the Peckham Wharf Cooperage. Aug 1865--As Alfred's birthday is in Feb he would have been 20 by this time. 1871 Census says children are: Frederick 27, Julia 20, Fanny 16, Charles 14, Alice 12 and Francis 11. All born Old Kent Road and livinging with parents at St Paul Convent Gardens, Francis is a licenecd victualler [tavern or inn or pub keeper]. The 1881 census finds the family living in Kensington Place Duke of York and lists Fanny's name as Janine but as she is born in the same place as Fanny I expect she is Fanny. Alice is the only child living with them when the census was taken. 1891 finds Francis (76) living with son Charles W.'s family in Newington St. Mary. Charles has wife Eliza E (32) born in the States and son Hebert C (9) born in Bradford, Wiltshire. Frederick could have been the Frederick George White born June 1843 Camberwell (GRO reference 4 67) Julia could be Julia Fanny (found on IGI) born 10 April 1848 and christened 13 Aug 1848 at Christ Church, Camberwell, London, England) BMD list one born Dec 1846 Parents for Francis likely are (IGI): Thomas White and Elizabeth Woolford 3 Oct 1814 Francis born 24 Dec 1815 in North Petherton Somerset married to Fanny Bowles Sep 1839 Parents of Fanny likely are: William Bowles and Fanny Guess at Tonbridge --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Margaret Bowles is thought to be a sister to David and Gideon. What is so interesting about Margaret is she was in several counties of Va. I started to make this post last week as a followup on the different Benjamin Bowles. It was written last week that Zachariel Bowles born 1754 was a son of Benjamin and Nancy Bowles and Zachariel had married Elizabeth from King Wm. Co. Margaret was in King Wm. Co.while she was married to Thomas Puryear. Now, who is Benjamin who married Nancy, a brother to David, Gideon, and Margaret or their father? Leathel, RAGSDALE // 1750 // Henrico Co. Does anyone have info. which might help establish the father of Peter S. BOWLES married to Elizabeth Jennie LAVINDER June 22, 1849 in Franklin Co., VA.? Their 6 children were: 1. John Peter WESLEY BOWLES- my grandfather 2. Victoria (Jennie) 3. James P. 4. Mary Elizabeth (Margaret) 5. Joseph R. 6. Sarah Catherine ( Sally) Census records indicate William was born in Wurt, VA. The only place I can come up with is an area called Wirtz in Franklin Co. A child from this family was named William MANASSAH BOWLES. Has MANASSAH come up in any of your research on the Bowles? In William Manassah Bowles' will, written in Rocky Mount, Franklin Co., VA. Chappie BOWLES is a signature witness for William. Seems I have the following choices: (Can you rule any of these out?) Wm. and Scena or Canney GREEN May 29,1820 Sur. John /GEARHART Wm. R. and Catherine ELLER, Sept. 5, 1826 Sur. Joseph FLORA Wm. And Sally PRESTON, Jan 22, 1797 Sur. John PRESTON Wm. And Nancy Bolling Dec. 27, 1800 Sur. John M. BOWLES Madeline Masters
Brenda, my Benjamin's daughter, Sarah, married Elijah MAXEY in Brazoria Co., TX in 1833. I mention it because the MAXEYs, JEFFRIES, and BOWLES are intertwined either in marriage or neighborhoods, land, or business partnerships. After my branch of Bowles got to Texas and had families, the surname BENNETT continues throughout several branches of the Bowles/Maxey pairings, both as a first and middle name. The Maxeys were a very prominent family in VA and they have a zillion descendants. Edythe Maxey Clark published a book entitled, "The Maxeys of Virginia" which is 1071 pages long and so big and bulky that it's hard to wrestle it to the pages I want here beside the computer. (Pub. by Gateway Press in Baltimore in 2000.) When I looked up BENNETT in this Maxey book, on page 940 I found: "Jarvis MAXEY, a son of John and Sally (BROOKS) MAXEY, was born in 1809, in Georgia---probably in Oglethorpe County. He moved with his parents to Alabama about 1817, first to Conecuh County and by the late 1820's to Covington County." After he married Martha ROBERTSON (I wonder if this is any connection to the many Robinson and Robersons who the Gulf States BOLES are looking for...) he "married Elizabeth BENNETT (born 1820, South Carolina), in Noxubee County on 4 October 1840." In further exploration, on page 8: "RADFORD MAXEY, the son of Edward and Elizabeth (?) MAXEY, died in 1771 in Halifax County, Virginia,..." His executors were Paul CARINGTON and Joseph FUQUA. Robert COBB also figures into this family of MAXEYs. We've discussed Radford, Fuqua and Cobb on the Bowles list; I don't remember Carington, but he might be in our archives. Radford and Elizabeth Maxey had a daughter, Elizabeth, on page 9, who is mentioned as having married Humphrey BROOKS. All it says here is that Elizabeth d bet. 1783-88, and Humphrey d. 1790 in Rowan Co., NC. I know that you and I both have BROOKS families in our Bowles trees, Brenda. Mine begins with Massilva BROOKS, b. ca. 1746 in Hanover, Lunenberg Co., VA, and d. 26 July 1829 in Clarke Co., GA. She married Obediah HOOPER. Their daughter, Mary HOOPER, married William WHITE, Sr., who was born in 1743 in Lunenberg Co., VA and died 18 Nov. 1818 in Franklin Co., GA. His parents were John WHITE and Phoebe CARTER, who both d. in Lunenberg Co., VA. Page 9: "Cumberland County, Virginia, Deeds, Book 1, pages 116-119." A land deed that said that Radford and Elizabeth MAXEY of Lunenberg Co., VA were selling land to John MAXEY of Cumberland Co., VA in 1749. The deed was witnessed by Joseph BONDURANT, Richard EPPERSON, and George RADFORD and recorded in March of 1750. BONDURANT and EPPERSON have both appeared on the Bowles list. And the EPPERSONs married into both the Bowles and Jeffries families, if you look in our archives and the South Central Kentucky archives. Page 89: Children of John and Elizabeth (MAXEY) RADFORD: John, Susanna, Agnes, George, Richard, Elizabeth, Nancy and Mary. Susanna RADFORD m. Richard EPPERSON Agnes RADFORD m. Dr. Joseph BONDURANT, Sr. When I looked for the surname BUNCH which you cite below, I found on page 117: "William James MAXEY, a son of John and Judith (ROBERTSON) MAXEY, was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, in 1831, and moved to Missouri with his parents when he was about two years old..." "...On 28 September 1862, in Sullivan County, he married Christina BUNCH (born 17 April 1845, Missouri), a daughter of William and Nancy (CLARK) BUNCH." What I mean to show by sending all that to the Bowles list is that once again, these families were huge and tightly interwoven. If any of our members can get their hands on Edythe Maxey Clark's enormous tome to look for their own families, they just might find them. This is a very well-researched and documented book. Or they can go to both the GenForum and RootsWeb surname boards and find the MAXEY board, and ask if any MAXEYs are connected to their own surnames. Folks, please don't ask me to do lookups from this book. I'll do a great deal for our Bowles list members, but that would truly be above and beyond as the book is hard to keep from sliding off the desk or keep it within reading distance so that I can type from it. You'll find it in numerous libraries. When you find a connection to the MAXEYs or any of the other surnames mentioned here, please do tell us all on the Bowles list. Very best wishes, Linne >In a message dated 5/7/2005 11:26:09 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, >leathel@sbcglobal.net writes: > >Nelson is a name related to David Bowles. This article was extracted from "The Lexington Herald", dated Wednesday July 24, 1907 (Page 1, Column 1) and appeared in the "The Bourbon Countian", a newsletter of the Bourbon County, Kentucky Genealogical Society, ISSN 1547-4410, Issue #1. "Paris, Kentucky, July 23, there was a reunion of Company "C", Ninth Kentucky Cavalry, C.S.A. held today at the home of Mr. Charles H. Meng (it is not spelled Menz) near North Middletown, at which seventeen of the surviving forty-three members of that noted company were present. "Mr. Meng chose the anniversary of the battle of Atlanta, in which the company participated, for the reunion, and invited every surviving member of the company to dinner. There are forty-three members of that noted company now living and they are scattered over ten states. At the dinner today there were seventeen gathered together to enjoy the bountiful hospitality of the host and recount again the stories of the years spent together overy forty years ago. The home of Mr. Meng was exquisitely decorated with flags and flowers and the dinner was such as not one of the guests saw during the entire four years of their service - all the good things that make Kentucky housekeepers famous the world over. Of those present one came from Georgia, one from Louisville, one from Fanklin, and one from Mason County to meet again the comrades of the war. Those present there were the following members of the company: [1] Capt. Edward Taylor, Lexington, Ky. [2] John E. Abrams/Abraham, Louisville, Ky. (carried on the roster as John Abrams) [3] George T. In addition to these members of Company "C", there were present Dr. Weaver and Capt. Ed K. Thomas of North Middletown and Desha Breckinridge of Lexington, the son of Col. William C. P. Breckinridge who commanded the Ninth Kentucky. Souvenirs of reunion given by Charles H. Meng, July 23, 1907 to Company C, Ninth Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry, Confederate States of America. "This was one of the very finest bodies of young men that enlisted in any army, and became the equal of any company in the service of either army during the war. It was not given to may companies to achieve an individual character and separate identity, but this company did win such a character, its action at Noonday Creek, at Snake Creek Gap, Dug Gap, at Sunshine Church and Jug Tavern and other places was so conspicuous and handsome that it became known as a large, well disciplined and gallant company." Wayne, These records from the Valentine Papers might be helpful to you in possibly connecting Bowles with Henderson. It looks like William Henderson was a neighbor of several Bowles in the Hanover Co. area of Virginia. If you should find any connections to these guys among the Orange Co. Bowles lines, please post it to the Bowles list. That would be pretty interesting information. Wayne, I will copy below what I have on John Bowles of Orange Co. I don't have as much documentation on this line, except for a number of land records most of what I have is second hand. This family also was heavily involved in the early Presbyterian movement in the Orange Co. area which strongly suggests that they were related to the Thomas Bowles line I previously posted. And while I have nothing to prove it, I think both of these Orange Co. lines were related to the William Bowles line that settled in Stokes Co. NC. The Foss name is not familiar to me, but I may have something on Henderson. I will have to search my Bowles files to see what I can find. Wayne, I will post what I have on Thomas Bowles of Orange Co. NC. The chart below is taken from a combination of primary sources and secondary sources. I have the Revolutionary War records of Thomas Bowles who was married to Nancy/Anne Davis. In his pension application, he states that his family moved to NC from Pennsylvania when he was a child. This Bowles line appears to have traveled south with the migration of Scots-Irish out of Pennsylvania. Many of the names associated with this family are Scots-Irish and the area where they settled in Orange Co. was full of Scots-Irish settlers. I will also copy below a transcription of the will of Thomas Bowles (father of the Revolutionary War soldier), a letter from Thomas Bowles' pension file and the transcription from the cemetery in Alamance Co. where members of this family are buried. A lot more research needs to be done of this family. I suspect they are related to a John Bowles who also appeared in Orange Co. about the same time as Thomas. I have some information on that line also and will post in another message. Brenda and Michael, you might want to research the Bennetts and Nelsons a little closer. They seem to travel together. Nelson is a name related to David Bowles. David is probably Gideon Bowles brother. Gideon had two children that died in Wilkes Co GA.David and Gideon were from Henrico Co and seem to be sons of Benjamin Bowles in Henrico Co 1729. John, Thomas, and Benjamin Bowles of Henrico Co seem to be brothers of David and Gideon. Brother John or Benjamin could be the source for John Booles born about 1750. Hoping for a DNA test from David and Gideon families soon. Leathel, Descendants of William Bennett Generation No. 1 1.
