This came in via the South Central Kentucky list. I discussed it with Gracie and we decided that it was important because even though there is no Bowles material in it, there may be Bowles material in what we might be denied seeing. Read it, then make your own decision about signing the petition. Linne From Bill Utterback [a regular contributor on the S. Central KY list]: I was made aware a few days ago of budgetary cuts recommended for FY 2006 that will directly affect our ability to continue to see further advancements in digital conversion of all types of records(including those related to genealogy and history). This will affect the National Archives & Records Administration, as well as the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, both of which are mainstays in the efforts to preserve and make available our national, state and local records. Below is the news release on this matter. You can see that some very influential groups, including the American Society of Archivists, of which I was a member for a number of years, are reacting to this budget cut proposal. While I rarely suggest on any list which I host that our subscribers become involved through the petition route or by other means, this situation is one that must be corrected before it occurs. The means and sites to express your opinion, if you care to do so, is included in the message below. The President's budget recommendations for Fiscal Year 2006 slash or eliminate more than 150 federal programs. In that budget, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) has been targeted to receive NO funding. This includes no funds for the grants program and no funds for staffing to support the NHPRC programs. It effectively eliminates NHPRC. The Council of State Historical Records Coordinators, the Society of American Archivists, and the National Association for Government Archivists and Records Administrators are working collaboratively to address this threat to NHPRC and NARA. Archivists across the U.S. are rallying to save NHPRC while also ensuring that NARA has sufficient funding to sustain its current programs and continue to advance in areas that benefit all archival repositories and every citizen of the United States As part of our efforts to continue to express to Congress interest in restoration of funding for NHPRC, we have created an online petition. Please consider signing this petition, and please forward it to any listservs, e-mail groups, or organizations and people you feel would be interested in helping with this effort. It is a quick and easy way for many people to assist. The petition will be forwarded to the House Appropriations Committee and Subcommittee on Treasury, Transportation, HUD and the Judiciary in late May. The petition can be access at: www.savearchives.org Click on the "petition" button. If you have not received a previous action alert on this issue, we encourage you to also write a letter to your members of Congress. For information on writing letters of support, see any of the following websites: www.savearchives.org www.coshrc.org www.archivists.org Thanks for your efforts to save this important program for archives! Does anyone know anything about Flavius J. Bowles (b. Washington co., Maryland son of Thomas & Susan Bowles) of Chicago in 1871. Linne posted this marriage in 2001: vol 24 pg 471 (Oxford Co): Flavius J. BOWLES, 30, gentleman, Washington Co. - Maryland, Chicago USA, s/o Thomas & Susan, married Florence ELMORE, 20, New Orleans, same, d/o William A. & Julia, witn: David RUDLE of Chicago & Alfred SHAW of Detroit, 13 Dec 1871 at Woodstock, Ontario I've finally traced back a Major F. J. Bowles, a building contractor, in Central Canada to the above Flavius Bowles. I was wondering about the "Major" part. Civil war, maybe? I did google a little and found a: Bowles, Flavius J.; Private; Aug. 22, 1862 Promoted to hospital steward, U. S. Army, April 2, 1864. ROSTER of the 15th PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY COMPANY A. Perhaps the "Major" was a bit of a local joke or he exaggerated a little. Tom LaPorte
Tom, the name Flavius is tailor-made for a search of the Bowles list archives. Also "Elmore," as we don't get many Elmores. And Rudle. Have you tried that? For our newcomers who don't know how to search the archives, here's the address: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Find this, then fill in the name Bowles-L in the slot. When the page comes up put in the name that you want. Yours, Linne >Does anyone know anything about Flavius J. Bowles (b. Yours, Linne ============================================ Match: Bowles Source: SHARP-L@rootsweb.com From: "katie debleeker" <kdebleeker@earthlink.net> Subject: James Robertson Sharp James Robertson Sharp born 20 Jun 1809 in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee and died 22 May 1863 Kaysville, Davis, Utah he was a minister and later converted and was an early Mormon pioneer. He was married to Martha Arminta Griffith on 5 Mar 1835 Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee. James Robertson Sharp Grandfather and Grandmother Sharp As told by Elizabeth Bowles, July, 1947 My grandfather James Robertson Sharp was born Nashville Tennessee on June 20, 1807. Grandfather loved the woods and was a good hunter. He trained his boys to be good shots too. He used to give them so many rounds of ammunition and they would be expected to bring so much game back with it. Grandfather joined the Mormon Church not long after it was organized. His name is mentioned in church history as early as 1843. He was a witness to the six plates that were found near Kinderhook. He was a very devout church member and worked hard in the church all of his life. Grandfather and his family came across the plains to Utah and he was one of the leaders of the company. I don't remember my grandfather Sharp at all because he died before I was born. I only know things about him that I remember father telling about. Grandfather Sharp died Kaysville, Utah on May 22, 1863. I do not remember my grandmother Sharp very well however. Her name was Martha Griffith before she was married to grandfather. She was born in Nashville Tenn. On August 7, 1820 and was a daughter of Jonathon T. Griffith and Sarah Lumley Griffith. She has sparkling blue eyes and brown curly hair. She always wore her hair cut down to her collar and it fell in little curls around her head. Grandma Sharp told me about coming across the plains and leaving her bedding and other things piled high on the banks Missouri River, as they could only take so much with them. Her father and grandfather also came west. Her grandfather lived in Orin, Utah and owned a lot of property there. I remember hearing them tell that he lived to be about 109 years old. He remarried when he was 100. Sometime after grandfather SharpĂs death grandmother married a man by the name of Dwiggens. They moved to Washington. Grandmother Sharp died in Reardon Washington April 12, 1905. If any of this sounds like it connects, I would like to hear from anyone who is connected. Katie Phoenix, AZ ===========================
I've been researching the Bowles/Boles descendants in Canada from England and Ireland for about 5 years now. I have started posting my research onto my Bowles in Canada site and have started with the Ontario counties. After which I will go on to their roots in Ireland and England and then back to other parts of Canada. Its going to take me months to get everything posted. You will find it is pretty plain as first I am posting just my raw information, then I am going to add the references and then other supporting documents and images. As this is just my first release of my first site I would appreciate any comments/concerns/corrections/contributions/Canadian content. But not questions, not yet. As the references are not yet posted I can't take a lot of questions about sources if I am to get the rest posted. Any Bowles researchers can take the information as unconfirmed and hopefully as a guide to their own research and just be patient about the documentation. It will be coming. I also plan to add a page indexing the U.S. connections of Bowles in Canada. The Home page is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bowlesfamily/index.htm The Ontario page is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bowlesfamily/bowles_in_ontario.htm and my own Bowles from Laois/Carlow are at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bowlesfamily/MyBowles.htm and http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bowlesfamily/bowles_family_of_quebec_city.htm I hope someone finds something to help them put their own jigsaw puzzle together! ================================================================ Date sent: 12 May 2005 Match: Bowles Source: GAWILKES-L@rootsweb.com From: "Vivian Toole" <vtoole@inu.net> Subject: Berry Cochran (POSSIBLE BOWLES/BOOLES CONNECTION???) Dear List Members, I am posting back to several lists because of the locations involved in this COCHRAN (various spellings) surname and the various possible spellings on this surname. The message below was gatewayed to the Oconee County, Georgia, list from a board on ancestry/rootsweb but I am not sure which board unless it was the Oconee County one. I suspect that there might be a BOWLES/BOOLES connections to this COCHRAN surname in early Greene and Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Picture the given name of Littlebury/Littleberry (various spellings) for Berry Cochran. Littleberry/Littlebury seems to have been a popular given name though I don't recall any information on an origin for it such as some prominent public figure or promient family surname. It was just "popular" or used a lot. There are two marriages for a Samuel Cochran and two marriages for a John Cochran and one for a James M. between 1802-1803 and then 1841 and 1852-53 recorded in Greene County, Georgia. Did not check Oglethorpe or I will neve get this posted if I stop to look up a lot of details. I have not researched the Cochran surname as I am a descendent of John Bowles/Booles d. c. 1825 in Greene County, Georgia, and Elizabeth _?_ d.c. 1834 or so. I have not worked on this family in a long time. Just researched it into the ground with no more information to get him out of Georgia. He may have been for North Carolina??? He lived and owned land in the vicinity of Temperance Bell Crossroads, between Woodville and Bethesda Church. The house of my ancestor, Jackson Bowles bc. 1792 m. Betsy Lindsey 1812, was between the cross roads and the road fork on what is now the paved and named road, Randolph Church Road, going from the cross roads to Daniel Springs on Hwy 44 to Washington in Wilkes County. This whole area was once in Wilkes County. The area around Woodville and Temperance Bell Crossroads was once in Oglethorpe County before 1799. Jackson Bowles and probably Betsey Lindsey Bowles are buried in the old cemetery at Temperance Bell Cross Roads. John and Elizabeth Booles/Bowles had a son, Thomas. Greene County marriage records include a marriage of Thomas Bowles to Acintha Cothrine on April 1, 1819 by William Tuggle and a Littleberry Bowles to Cena Cochrane August 29, 1833 by Nathan Hobbs. Back in the time of genealogy research before the Internet before 1995 one Bowles researcher on the line of this Thomas Bowles proposed that these marriages were a case of a widow Cochrane (various spellings) with a daughter by the same or similar given name had married Thomas Bowles and that children by previous marriages had also married each other. Or some version thereof. Unfortunately, I believe that that researcher is now deceased. As I wrote above, it has been a long time since I have worked on my Bowles family. Just no new information. If I take time to look up all the details, I will never get this posted. There were two other Bowles/Booles men in the same area at the same time that I have not been able to tie together to my John Booles, Sr. William Booles was a Rev. Sol. from North Carolina and his widow received a pension. His descendents mostly moved further west eventually to Louisiana. The other was Jesse Boles/Booles/Bowles who died early with a will in Oglethorpe County. Some of his descendents eventually showed up in Taliaferro County Census after it was formed c. 1827. I have never found anyone researching the line of Jesse Bowles. A SAR line has been established for William Booles, Sr. There were some other assorted Bowles that I have not tied into these lines in early Georgia. Have had a real job sorting out who belonged to which man and finally gave up on matching some of the early John Booles references. Hope this helps someone. Maybe a new lead on my Bowles/Booles however far fetched. One can always hope. I am not currently on the Bowles list though some of my early posting should be in the archives. Wiley, 1891, 1996. Navy blue grained hardback with gilt printing, just out of the shrinkwrap, 9 x 11-1/4, 658 pages, surname index, portraits, the book gives a brief historical review for each county, and the bulk of the book is just filled with the wonderful biographies and family histories that we genealogists love to find. Per the publisher: "The history of any nation, state, or country is best and most forcibly written in the life records of its citizens. In view of this, in 1876 the U. S. Congress recommended to state and county authorities the importance and necessity of collecting and preserving the histories and biographies of their prominent men and useful citizens. The publisher of this work compiled and published the first cyclopedia of biographies that was ever issued in Pennsylvania. Covers two important western Pennsylvania counties...Over 2,000 surnames + vast amount of historical research....Excellent resource." The following does not include all the surnames by a long shot, but does include the surnames of those whose biographical sketches are to be found in the book and will be given in alphabetical order by county, city, town or village. This is primarily for those who have already signed up, but is useful to those who might be joining up soon. Once you have received your full set of results, you should consider doing two things. First, go to your personal page at Family Tree DNA and select the "Setup Preferences" tab. This will take you to a page where you can choose to have your results compared against the entire Family Tree DNA database, rather than just against those in the Bowles project. Doing this will make it possible for you to learn about very close matches (24/25 or 25/25 for example) that exist between you and someone with a different surname. If you choose to do this, then you should de-select the 12 marker matches/close matches option, and select only the 25 and 37 (if you have tested at 37 markers). This way you won't be inundated with false matches on the 12 marker level. The second thing you should consider doing is joining the Ysearch database. To do this, select the "Y-DNA Matches" tab and go to that window. On that page you will find a text box that contains this message: ----- Additional possibilities for searching matches: While our database is not open to the wide public for privacy reasons, Family Tree DNA has created Ysearch.org as a free public service so that people who have tested with the different companies can compare their results. You will be able to determine what portion of your personal information you want to disclose. Please note that a new user ID will be created for you and you will be asked to choose a new password. This new set of ID/Password is exclusive for Ysearch.org. You will also be given the opportunity to upload your GEDCOM if you have one. ----- There will be a statement at the end of the message that offers you a link to Ysearch.org. If you select that link, you will be taken there and guided through the process of joining that database. The main value to Ysearch is that you get to compare your results to others who may have tested with some other company other than Family Tree DNA. If you have questions, let me know. In a message dated 5/7/2005 4:14:07 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, leathel@sbcglobal.net writes: Margaret was in King Wm. Co.while she was married to Thomas Puryear. Now, who is Benjamin who married Nancy, a brother to David, Gideon, and Margaret or their father? Leathel, Regarding Benjamin Bowles m. Nancy, the post below was posted by Cheryl Houin to the Bowles list back in 2001. At least some of the Bowles she mentions migrated south to Surry Co. NC where a Benjamin Bowles left a will in 1780. I have always thought that this group in Surry Co. NC was the most likely source for my Benjamin Bowles of NC. To the best of my knowledge, no one has connected these guys to the Gideon/David Bowles family. But, that wouldn't surprise me at all. I have already contacted Marty Grant, a descendent of the Surry Co. line, to see if he knows a male Bowles who might be a candidate for DNA testing. He didn't, but promised to post something at his web site. Brenda Cheryl R. Houin (_rene@skyenet.net_ (mailto:rene@skyenet.net) ) on 3/25/01: John Bowles appears in the court order books of Cumberland Co, VA during the early 1750's. Given that the surnames Burch, Mosby, Bernard, and Ford are enumerated among the residents of Cumberland Co, and that Benjamin Bowles, Sr. died there c1788, I PROPOSE the following: John Bowles was the son of Benjamin Bowles, Sr. and his first wife, Nancy. John Bowles was married to Mary and their children were Thomas Bowles (Sarah Burch), Jerusha Bowles (Samuel Mosby), Mary Bowles (Reuben Ford), Frances Bowles (Joshua Bernard), Lucy Bowles, John Bowles, and Benjamin Bowles (d 1780 Surry Co, NC). The parents of the John Bowles (b 1747) who married Mary Radford were Joshua Bowles (d 1766) and Elizabeth. Joshua Bowles was probably a son of Benjamin Bowles, Sr. and his first wife. Benjamin Bowles, Sr. was the father of Elizabeth Bowles who married Henry Martin in 1761 in Cumberland Co, VA. This is the same Henry Martin who sold property to Gideon Bowles. Henry and Elizabeth named a son Benjamin and a daughter Nancy. Benjamin Bowles, Sr. was the guardian of Sarah Holman, orphan of Henry Holman. This girl was probably his niece; her mother was Mourning Bowles.
Dear Brenda, Attached are my comments in brackets or parentheses on those persons you have listed. My information, for the most part, is inherited from others, also, and does not derive from a lot of original research, except for the estate record for Elizabeth STROZIER BOWLES, but I hope it is useful to you and our other readers with ancestors in Meriwether County and Georgia. When no place is referred to exactly, or the term "this city" is used, Norwich is the place referred to. Similarly, mentions of "the Castle", "the City Gaol" etc refer to institutions in Norwich. Norfolk Chronicle 19 April 1783 P.2, column 3 >From microfilm supplied by the British Library Newspaper Library Yesterday two American ships arrived in the river [Thames, London] with their thirteen stripes flying, loaded with wheat and flour from New England; and several others are daily expected, as they sailed with the above ships. Norfolk Chronicle 19 April 1783 P.2, column 4 >From microfilm supplied by the British Library Newspaper Library Yesterday se'nnight Mr SHARPE, the eminent musician, from London, gave a numerous and brilliant assembly of ladies and gentlemen, at the concert-room in this city, the greatest satisfaction, by his capital execution on the hautboy. This day the scrutiny demanded on both sides by the candidates at the late election for Nominees of Common-council for the great ward of Mancroft, will begin at the Guildhall. At a full committee of proprietors held at our theatre yesterday fortnight, Mr BARRETT had a renewal of his engagement as Manager. We are prevented from giving our readers a list of the Common-council this week, as promised in our last; it being determined to proceed with the scrutiny for Mancroft Ward, which cannot, on account of other business intervening, be finished before the latter end of this Month. There has not been an instance of scrutiny upon any poll taken in this city being regularly carried through since that for Sheriff in 1738, when the numbers were for Alderman LOVICK -- 1030, Alderman BLACK -- 1023; on finishing the scrutiny there was a majority of one legal vote for Mr LOVICK, but the temper of the times being violent, corruption at elections avowedly patronised by the Minister, and practised by his minions in every corporation, and where its influence was not effectual, chicane and sophistry were made use of to baffle evidence and elude justice, in consequence arbitrary decisions were frequently made; Mr LOVICK did not appear to insist upon his right, but Mr BLACK was sworn on Michaelmas Day. On Tuesday last was married at St Peter's of Mancroft, by the Rev. Mr HARRINGTON, Mr Thomas MALLET, mercer and draper, at Lowestoft, to Mrs SOWTER, of this city. On Wednesday last died, in a very advanced age, Mrs BRETTINGHAM, relict of Mr Matthew BRETTINGHAM, architect, whose amiable virtues, and exemplary conduct throughout life, rendered her beloved and respected by all who knew her. The week before last died, after a lingering illness, at her brother's house at the Admiralty, Mrs STEPHENS, sister to Philip STEPHENS, Esq., of St Faith's, near this city, and Secretary to the Admiralty. On Tuesday last was committed to the Castle by Sir Edmund BACON, Bart., Samuel HYNES, of Thurlton, charged by the oath of Mr John DENNY, of Thurlton aforesaid, farmer, on a very strong suspicion of feloniously stealing and carrying away a quantity of wheat, and some wheat in the chaff. Mr DENNY having been frequently robbed of corn, the prisoner, who was his servant, persuaded his master to sit up a few nights, to detect the thief, but no one came. Mr DENNY having some suspicion that the prisoner was the thief, had his house immediately searched, when a large quantity of wheat was found in his chamber. On being carried before the magistrate, he confessed the robbery. Thursday was committed to the above prison, by Charles WESTON, Esq., Clear MUNFORD, and John MUNFORD, charged with stealing a large iron hatchet and hammer, the property of Mr John GIRLING of Lyng; also further charged with stealing a corn binn [sic]and a twill sack the property of William HOWLETT, of Weston. On Saturday last was committed to Yarmouth gaol, by John REYNOLDS, Esq., Deputy Mayor, John HILL, jun. and John BICKERS, charged with stealing, at various times, considerable quantities of wheat, flour, barley, and oats, out of the granaries and warehouses of Messrs GOOCH and COTTON, William PALGRAVE, Esq., Mr Robert COLLS, and Mr John BELL, on the west side Yarmouth river, which on their examination they confessed. -- And on Sunday was committed by the same Magistrate, Richard GOLDSPINK, charged with stealing a sack of flour out of the said Mr PALGRAVE's warehouse, which on his examination he confessed.
