    1. A Bowles Puzzle
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. I need some help here. I started with the following family in 1880: 1880 Federal Census: Texas, Kaufman County, ED 37, page 35 (108C) household 344/360 Bowles, Nelles L. - W M 34, farmer Bowles, Rilla - W F 32, wife, keeping house Bowles, Clarence - W M 8, son, at school Bowles, Curtis - W M 6, son Bowles, Joella - W F 3, daughter Bowles, Roots - W M 11/12 (born July 1879) Next I looked in the 1900 Kaufman Co TX census and found this family: 1900 Federal Census: Texas, Kaufman County, ED 74, page 9B household 92/95 Bowles, Nuldus L. - head, W M May 1845, 55, married 30 years, GA NC Bowles, Mary S. - wife, W M May 1848, 52, married 30 years, 9 children/5 living, TX KY Anderson, Tulula - daughter, W F Nov 1881, 18, married 2 years, 1 child, TX GA Anderson, Howard M. - grandson, W M Dec 1899, TX TN Anderson, Charles C. - son-in-law, W M Nov 1871, 28, married 2 years, TN Bowles, Clarence C. - son, W M Dec 1871, 28 [This entry crossed out; but it indicates a connection.] Bowles, Conrad L. - son, W M Feb 1895, TX GA Roots, Mary - mother-in-law, W F Sep 1816, 83, widowed, KY VA This record tells me that this Nuldus L. Bowles married a lady named Mary S. Roots. Note that in the 1880 census record above, Nelles and Rilla had a son they named Roots Bowles. This is a very unusual given name unless it is the mother's surname. Notice also that the ages are significantly close for Nuldus/Nelles, Mary/Rilla, and Clarence. I am thinking that these two records are for the same family, but I can't be sure yet. The name Nuldus L. Bowles appears only twice in census indexes, here in 1900 and in 1850 Georgia as shown in the next record. 1850 Federal Census: Georgia, Jackson County, Subdivision 45, household 1118 Anderson Bowles - 45 M, farmer $800, GA Elizabeth M. Bowles - 16 F, GA Cicero R. Bowles - 14 M, GA Balsora J. Bowles - 13 F, GA Anderson H. Bowles - 11 M, GA Franquitta F. Bowles - 10 F, GA Priscilla C. Bowles - 8 F, GA Loven D. Bowles - 7 M, GA Nuldus L. Bowles - 6 M, GA Nancy J. C. Bowles - 4 F, GA The same family is located in the 1860 Jackson Co GA census as follows: 1860 Federal Census: Georgia, Jackson County, J. Randolph District household 776 Anderson Boles - 55 M, farmer, $1200, $1580, VA Elizabeth Boles - 30 F, GA Nathan Boles - 2 M, GA no name Boles - 6/12 F, GA household 777 Anderson H. Boles - 21 M, farm laborer, --, $100, GA Sarah Boles - 21 F, GA John Boles - 6/12 M, GA household 778 Cicero Boles - 23 M, farm laborer, --, $150, GA Elizabeth Boles - 19 F, GA Franqueretta Boles - 19 F, GA Clemantine Boles - 18 F, GA Levin Boles - 16 M, farm laborer, GA Nullia Boles - 14 M, GA <================= Nuldus? Nancy Boles - 13 F, GA Given the very unusual given name of Nuldus, I tend to believe that both Nuldus Bowles (1850, 1900) are the same person. Now let's turn back to the Roots family. Look first at this 1850 census record: 1850 Federal Census: Texas, Sabine County, page 316 household 90 Thomas Roots - 37 M, farmer, KY Mary Roots - 34 F, KY Edmund Roots - 13 M, KY William Roots - 11 M, KY John Roots - 9 M, KY Nancy Roots - 7 F, KY Elizabeth Roots - 4 F, TX Sonilda Roots - 2 F, TX <=========== Is this Mary? Clarrissa Roots - 3/12 F, TX And this 1860 record: 1860 Federal Census: Texas, Grayson County, Sherman Jct., page 138 household 57 Thos Roots - 48 M, farmer, $1200, $800, KY Mary Roots - 43 F, KY Wm R. Roots - 21 M, farmer, --, $250, TX(?) Elizabeth Roots - 13 F, TX Mary S. Roots - 11 F, TX <======== Sonilda? Clara L. Roots - 9 F, TX Thos G. Roots - 7 M, TX Sarah F. Roots - 5 F, TX Preston Roots - 3 M, TX Here is where I have to speculate a bit. I think that this Mary Roots, age 43, is the same as the mother-in-law in the 1900 census who is 83. I also think that her daughter Mary Sonilda Roots is actually Mary Serrilla Bowles, and that the 1880 census record showing Rilla Bowles is her. Please feel free to show me that I am wrong. Charlie

    3. Linne, This is Harold Bowles' line that I am trying to track down. I am trying to track down Nuldus L. Bowles, son of Anderson Bowles, to determine if he is the same as a Nelles L. Bowles who was in Kaufman County TX in 1880. I think he might also be the Nuldus L. Bowles in 1900 Kaufman County TX who was born in May 1845 in Georgia according to that census. Harold traces back to the Nelles L. Bowles in 1880. Charlie > Charlie, in 1994, Ed Lewis (edlewis@pelican.davlin.net) sent >me these family group sheets. 3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: DC-OLD-NEWS-L@rootsweb.com From: "barbara & dave" <barbara-dave@adelphia.net> Subject: Washington Post January 19, 1905 Miscellaneous(#1) Page 10 Washington Post January 19, 1905 Miscellaneous(#1) Page 10 BLACK SMOKE UNAVOIDABLE. Commissioners Witnesses to Violation of Law at Pumping Station. Commissioners West and Biddle, together with Senator Stewart, of the Senate Committee on District Affairs, visited the Trumbull street pumping station yesterday to inspect the reported violations .of the smoke law. Commissioner Macfarland was detained by conferences with Cabinet officers, and was not able to be present. By arrangement the fireman was instructed to build no fire under one of the boilers until the party arrived. When, finally, the fire was built as usual, the big smokestack emitted dense black smoke for four minutes and forty-five seconds, according to Mr. West. The fireman said possibly this might be avoided by the use of coke. After his return, Mr. West said that the test made it certain to his mind that in the large plant it is impossible not to violate the law as it is at present. Lindley E. Sinclair, superintendent of the plants of the Washington Railway and Electric Company, was again named as defendant in the Police Court for an alleged violation of the smoke law at the company's power house at the foot of Four-and-a-half street southwest. Inspector Wollard testified to observing dense smoke issuing from the power house stack on January 11. Mr. Sinclair pleaded guilty, and was fined $20. Robert Callahan, proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel, was the only other alleged smoke law violator called to answer in the Police Court yesterday. He forfeited $20 collateral. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OFFSET BY BURGLAR'S ARREST. Sentence of Dismissal Not Enforced Against Officer Nichols. The arrest of a. burglar in the act of robbing a house has saved Special Street Crossing Policeman John B. Nichols from being dismissed from the force. He was recently before the trial board on a charge of conduct unbecoming an officer. He was accused of having used violent and harsh language to a Mrs. Cook and to Policeman McKie. The trial board, through its chairman, A. Leftwich Sinclair, recommended his dismissal, failing to see that the arrest of the burglar warranted retention of the officer. Maj. Sylvester, while stating that harshness and disrespect are the best indications of want of ability for police duty, was willing, on account of Nichols' attention to duty since the occurrence which caused his trial, to recommend him to the mercy of the Commissioners. Mr. West yesterday suggested Nichols be fined $50 instead of being dismissed, in view of the "valuable services rendered." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contagious Diseases Decreasing. Nearly every contagious disease prevalent in the District is reported by the health officer, Dr. William C. Woodward, as having decreased within the last week. Diphtheria was decreased from 39 to 22 cases, there being 13 new ones reported and 30 discharged; scarlet fever, from 34 to30, 7 new cases being reported and 11 discharged; typhoid fever, from 125 to 118. In connection with the typhoid fever, it is reported that at the corresponding period last year only 44 cases were under treatment. The deaths during the week were 121, and the births 109. During the corresponding period of last year the deaths were 145. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Property Owners Cited to Court. Justice Gould, of the District Supreme Court, yesterday on motion of A. Leftwich Sinclair, assistant corporation counsel, signed an order directing the United States marshal for the District to serve citations upon such owners of land near the Government Hospital for the Insane, which is needed by the District for the construction of the outfall sewer, as may be found by him within the District, requiring them, to show cause on or before February 10 next, at 10 o'clock a, m., why :the land in question should not be condemned. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEN. GREELY AT FAULT. Supt. Stidham Decides Controversy in Ash Collector's Favor. Gen. A. W. Greely, chief signal officer, United States army, has complained to the Commissioners about the removal of ashes from his residence at 1914 G street northwest. First his ash receptacle was too small according to the ashman, and now that he has procured a larger one, the ashman has declined to remove the ashes, saying that the receptacle is too large and that he cannot lift it. The matter is one of the first about which the new superintendent, Harrison Stidham, has made a recommendation. He says, after an investigation, the complaint's receptacle exceeds the capacity allowed, and that he did not furnish enough lawful ones to hold one week's accumulation. "If he will comply with the regulation referred to, I do not think he will have any further trouble," says Mr. Stidham. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- REMINISCENCES AT BANQUET. Story of Trip to G. A, R. Encampment Told in Responses to Toasts. The second annual reunion and banquet of the members of the excursion to the G. A. R. national encampment at San Francisco, Cal., in August, 1903, was held at Freund's Tuesday evening. Seventy members of the party sat at the tables, and after the menu had been discussed, a, number of toasts were responded to. Maj. F. I. Willis, in response to his toast, "Why I Tried to Change Wives," told in verse of his amusing and yet embarrassing experience when, in the darkness of a San Francisco night, he by mistake, gallantly helped the wrong lady on the car and left his wife standing on the corner to follow him on the next car. The other speakers recalled many pleasant, .and some laughable, incidents of the trip. Those present were: B. W. Beebe, Miss Cora Beebe, Miss M. H. Booth, C. C. Boyd, J. M. Boardman, Miss M. E. Burke, B. F. Chase, Mrs. Chase, Miss Clark, W. B. Coppersmith, Mrs. H. J. Durfee, Mr. Dodge, Mrs. L. L. Dodge, Miss Denham, B. F. Entriken, J. J. Freeland, Mrs. E. J. Figgat, Miss Olive W. Greene, Z. Hunt, Gen. B. F. Hawkes, Mrs. Hawkes, H. Hoffliger, Mrs. Hoffliger, Mrs. H. E. Herbert, Mrs. Susie Jacobs, Judge I. G. Kimball, Mrs. Kimball, Harry G. Kimball, Miss Lilly Keim [might be Kelm], Mrs. Keim, M. M. Mays, Miss Fannie McMahon, Mrs. H. S. Marshall, W. A. Paul, Mrs. Paul, Mr. William Plum, Mrs. Plum, George C. Round, Mrs. Round, Dr. A. B. Stine, Mrs. Stine, W. E. Shea, Miss Mabel Peterson, Mrs. M. G. Slicer, H. F. Smith, Mr. H. P. Springer, Mrs. M. Smith, Miss Olive Taylor, A. P. Tasker, Mrs. Tasker, Miss Fannie Ten Eyck, L. S. Tyndall, L. Vanderhoef, Maj. F. I. Willis, Mrs. F. I. Willis, Mrs. Julia Willis, Maj. L. P. Williams, Mrs. Williams, Miss Williams, W. S. Whitmore, Mrs. Whitmore. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW MILITIA COMMAND. Organization of Company A, Second Regiment, D. C. N. G. The enlisted men of the newly organized Company A, Second Regiment, D. C. N. G., elected their officers at a meeting presided over by Maj. Anton Stephan, Fourth Battalion, D. C. N. G. Theodore J. Heap was chosen captain; W. B. Miller, first lieutenant, and Norman S. Bowles, second lieutenant. Maj. Stephan made a speech complimenting the members of the company upon their attendance, appearance, and the selection of officers. A buffet supper was served, and the evening wound up in a variety of pleasantries. Capt. Heap until recently has been first lieutenant of Company K, First Regiment, D. C. N. G.; Lieut. Miller has served for several years on the noncommissioned staff of Gen. Harries, and Lieut. Bowles is an ex-officer of the Hogh School Cadet Regiment. The infant company starts with a splendid personnel of well drilled athletically inclined men and hopes to rank well with the older companies before the inaugural turn-out on March 4. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To Safeguard Brother's Property. Frederick W. Motts instituted proceeedings [sp.] in the District Supreme Court yesterday to have the court declare his brother, George Motts, incompetent to take care of his property interests. It is sought to have the court appoint some person to preserve the defendant's property and care for him as his committee. The petition filed by Attorneys Lambert & Raker sets forth that George Motts has suffered a third stroke of apoplexy and has been greatly impaired in mind and body thereby. His estate is valued at more than $10,000, and it is claimed that he is unable to care for himself or his property. Affidavits of two physicians were filed showing the condition of the defendant, and Justice Barnard ordered a. writ issued returnable for hearing to-day in Circuit Court No. 1. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Driver Injured in Collision. In a collision between a surrey, in which he was driving, and a laundry delivery wagon, at the corner of Fifteenth street and Pennsylvania avenue northwest, yesterday William Slaymaker, of 1303 F street northwest, was thrown to the ground and painfully bruised. Both wagons were slightly damaged. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DISTRICT BUILDING NOTES. The Commissioners will grant a hearing Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock to those who want to be heard relative to the bill providing for the construction of a bridge over Rock Creek at Q street. The engineer department has given the District Construction Company, in charge of the construction of the Connecticut avenue bridge, permission to alter plans in regard to the centers of the main arches. This will mean a saving of $1,200 to the contractor directly, and indirectly to the District. Walter C. Allen, electrical engineer, has reported to Commissioner Macfarland that he believes the improvements and the amount of travel on Central avenue are not sufficient to warrant the extension of street lights thereon. Such improvement was requested by the Prince George County and Eastern District of Columbia Citizens' Association. Commissioner West has approved the following appointments of policemen by Maj. Sylvester: Rudolph V. C. Jama, vice Ferguson, appointed desk sergeant; Wilbur H. Rock, vice Dennis, resigned; Marion K. Humphries, vice Wall, promoted; James W. Jones, vice Headley, promoted; and George N. Scriven, vice Schneider, resigned. All are to be privates in class 1. [note: the above paragraph is structured exactly as presented.] The police surgeons have recommended through Maj. Sylvester to the Commissioners that sick leave throughout the month of December be allowed Privates G. S. Catts, T. E. Gordon, T. B. Lipscomb, A. W. Parham, C. B. Willis, J. E. Barnes, M. J. 1. John Bole, Dauphin Co., PA, 1793
    2. Linne Gravestock
    3. ===================================================================== Match: Bole Source: FULTON-L@rootsweb.com From: <mmontgo@mindspring.com> Subject: David Hunter Fulton -- where did that middle name come from? Fulton list readers may recall various discussions about Alexander Fulton and Sarah McDonald, both born around 1750, who were married by Rev. John Roan in Lancaster County on 1 December 1774. Rev. Roan was a Presbyterian minister who served the congregaions of Derry, Paxtang and Mount Joy from 1745 to 1775 in a part of Lancaster County that in 1785 became Dauphin County. His congregation lists and marriage lists are in Egle's Notes and Queries of Pennsylvania along with a list of those buried in Derry cemetery and another list of those who contributed to the building of a wall around the cemetery. Alexander and Sarah had the following children: Jane Fulton, b. 1775 David Hunter Fulton, b. 1777 Robert Fulton, b. 1780 (my ancestor) John Fulton, b. 1782 Sarah Fulton, b. 1784 William Fulton, b. 1786 Margaret Fulton, b. 1787 Alexander and Sarah eventually moved to Huntingdon County PA, and after Alexander died between 1800-1805, the rest of the family moved down to Indiana County PA except for David Hunter Fulton who moved at some point to Centre County, then Clearfield County. Researchers of this family have long thought that the middle name of David Hunter Fulton might provide a clue that would lead to discovery of Alexander's parents. Now I have found something that seems to suggest that David Hunter for whom David Hunter Fulton was named was more likely a connection of John McDonald, who with his wife Sarah were members of John Roan's congregation and are buried in the Derry cemetery. John McDonald's grave says he died 23 December 1793, age 81, and Sarah's says she died 10 November 1789, age 75. Here is a link to the burials in Derry cemetery: http://www.maley.net/dauphin/OnlineData/cemetery/DerryPresby.htm Because these are the only McDonalds in the cemetery, and Rev. Roan, the minister who married Alexander Fulton and Sarah McDonald presided over the church, I had thought it likely that John and his wife Sarah were the parents of Sarah born about 1750. John McDonald and David Hunter, by the way, are both listed as members of John Roan's congregation in Egle's Notes and Queries of Pennsylvania. Not having much luck finding John McDonald as a grantor or grantee in Lancaster County, I took a look while at Salt Lake at the Dauphin County records. Bingo. On April 7, 1793 there was a land sale by John McDonald of two tracts of land in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, to John Bole. The deed was not recorded until June 13, 1804. The deed is very hard to read, and I have sent to the county in hopes of getting a better copy. At any rate, in the description of the parcels, John McDonald states that he bought them with David Hunter, and that they held them as tenants in common, and that the tracts lay between the existing lands of him and David Hunter. He also said David and he had made an "amiable division" of these lands. This all suggested to me that John and David are likely to be related; possibly they were half-brothers, brothers in law, or some such relationship. Law.com gives the following definition of tenancy in common: tenancy in common Title to property (usually real property, but it can apply to personal property) held by two or more persons, in which each has an "undivided interest" in the property and all have an equal right to use the property, even if the percentage of interests are not equal or the living spaces are different sizes. Unlike "joint tenancy," there is no "right of survivorship" if one of the tenants in common dies, and each interest may be separately sold, mortgaged or willed to another. Thus, unlike a joint tenancy interest, which passes automatically to the survivor, upon the death of a tenant in common there must be a probate (court supervised administration) of the estate of the deceased to transfer the interest (ownership) in the tenancy in common. It appears that John McDonald had never recorded the deeds for the land, and is furnishing the purchase information and deed chain at this point of sale. The first parcel was 102 acres, and had been purchased of William Sawyer and his wife Sophia on 23 November 1764 by John McDonald and David Hunter. This tract was bordered by land owned by Christopher ?, John Campbell, and Peter Dole. Prior to the Sawyer ownership, the land had been owned by David McCord who made improvements on it in 1744. The second tract, which adjoined the first, contained 51 and a quarter acres, and had been sold to John McDonald and David Hunter with a release date of 22 March 1768. Prior to that it had been owned by Andrew Roan who was a brother to Rev. John Roan. Neighbors were Benjamin Boyd, other lands of Andrew Roan, John McDonald, and David Hunter. In addition to these two tracts, a small piece of land of 3 and a quarter acres was included in the sale, and it had been sold to John McDonald by Ro! bert McCallen (it was his company that Alexander Fulton was in the the Rev. War.) with a release date of 2 November 1772. The John Bole that John McDonald was selling this land to appears from online sites to be married to a daughter of William Sawyer. The number of acres sold in the entire parcel were 165, and I don't understand what happened to the part owned by David Hunter since the total should be about half of what it is if David, or heirs, retained his share of the land. Well, I am continuing to research all these folks, but more deed examination will have to await another trip to Salt Lake. By the way, I noticed the name Sophia Sawyer, and in the Derry cemetery there was one Agnes Taylor who died in 1763 at age 15. Another Agnes Taylor (her mother?) contributed to the building of the Derry cemetery wall in 1771. Weren't the names Sophia Sawyer and Agnes Taylor mentioned by Pat Stark in an earlier list message about Rev. John Roan's concern with a possible witchcraft episode on which he was seeking advice from the Donegal Presbytery? Mary Montgomery

    2. In a message dated 5/21/2005 11:45:44 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, jgbowles@verizon.net writes: Looking for information about my Wythe Co. Va, Bowles family. The ages look right for them to have been from Person Co. NC. Any ideas? Thanks, Jim Jim, Since I posted that message to the Bowles list in 2001, Mary Ann Null and I have done a lot of work on this Bowles line. So a word of caution: everything in the chart prior to Thomas Bowles m. Sarah Suit is wrong. We have found that, at least when it comes to the North Carolina lines, the Farquar book is very, very unreliable. Now, having said that, let me give you what we do know about this line. Mary Ann's earliest identified ancestor is Sarah Bowles who left a will in Caswell Co. NC in 1783. Part of Caswell Co. was later cut to form Person Co. and Person Co. bordered Granville Co. Mary Ann's Bowles group lived near the line between Person and Granville Co. We think it is entirely possible that the William Bowles found in Wythe Co., VA in 1850 is a son of John Bowles, Jr., a descendant of Sarah Bowles of Caswell Co. See the chart below which shows the children we have identified for John and his wife Deborah Oakley. Not all of these are absolutely proven, but we have enough records to feel comfortable with this family configuration. Marcus is not a common Bowles name, so when you find a Marcus it's probably this family. The name in this family likely comes from the Oakley side. We haven't found Marcus in NC in 1850 (which may be more evidence that he was in VA). By 1860, he is back in NC, living with brother Thomas and his family: From Granville Co. 1860 Census: Napp of Reeds District Post office Tally Ho Enumerated Aug 1, 1860 Page 110 # 786 #785 Thomas Bowles 54 M Tobaaco Roller Value Personal Estate: $60 b. NC. It appears that he never married. Since John, Jr. and Deborah married in 1801 and the first child we have for this family was b. 1806, there are very likely a couple of older kids missing. This William may well be one of them. John Bowles, Jr. was grandson of Sarah Bowles of Caswell Co. At this point, her husband is still unknown. This group came south to NC from Virginia and the marriage of one daughter -- Oney Bowles to Andrew Yeargan -- was recorded in the Goochland Co. area in 1757. Mary Ann and I have a lot of information on this family. If you think you are related through this William Bowles in Wythe Co., let me know. I have more I can send you. NC Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 11:18:15 EST In reviewing my copy of the Farquhar book, "The History of the Bowles Family," I realized that I could probably construct one of the "unlinked" families in his book. This is a family that moved from Virginia (either Hanover or Goochland Co.) to Person Co. NC. I know there are list members who are interested in the Person Co. lines, so I thought I would post the information I have. I will copy a descendancy chart below. I may have the first Bowles wrong. Here is what Farguhar says: "ROBERT BOWLES, who served in the Dunsmore War of 1774, had a brother who moved from Hanover County, VA to Goochland County, VA. A son, Matthew, was a tobacco grower near Petersburg about 1810. He had sons: John, George, William, Thomas, and Mark. It is believed that William, Thomas and Mark were the three brothers of that name who went to North Carolina before the Civil War. Mark, who was a banker and tobacconist of Person County, NC, never married. William went from Person County to the Western part of NC." I can't tell if Farquhar means that Matthew is the son of Robert or the son of the brother who moved from Hanover to Goochland Co. So, I have put Robert, but that could be wrong. Does anyone recognize any of these Bowles who Farquhar says left Virginia for Person Co. NC? If yes, please post to the list anything you have.
