Linne, Information a "newbie" would not know. Interesting. Elizabeth
We received three additional sets of results today. Results for markers 13-25 came in for kits #34892, #34904, and #35029. Kit #34892 continues to be an expected match with kit #30986 as they share a common ancestor. The match is 24/25 with the only mismatch in one of the faster mutating markers. Kit #34904 is a 25/25 match with kits #29409 and #30760. These folks are very excited about how this is coming together for them. Kit #35029 remains alone, so we are looking for additional participants in the Thomas and Sarah Holman Bowles line to help clarify things. We have had a bit of a lull in new participants and we really need to get more folks involved. If you, or someone you know, can be a participant (male Bowles, son of a male Bowles), then I encourage you to get involved as soon as you can. Remember, the join page is [http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W26816&special=true]. Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]
Some of you may be familiar with the Genographic Project, sponsored by the National Geographic Society. If not there is general information available at this site: [https://www5.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/about.html]. Family Tree DNA is handling the testing aspects for the Genographic Project, and as a by-product, participants in the Genographic Project are given the opportunity to join a FTDNA surname project like ours. We received our first participant from the Genographic Project today. He descends from Thomas and Emma Bowles of Wellington in Shropshire, England. Participants from the Genographic Project will be assigned a kit number with an N prefix. Otherwise their kits will be identical to the ones we use. Their kits will be for the first 12 markers, but they will have the opportunity to upgrade to 25 or 37 markers. This new participant's 12 markers do not match any of our previous ones, so he brings a new Bowles line to the mix. More to come... Per the publisher: "The land certificates and headrights in this volume were abstracted from Accomack County court records, the certificates being granted to persons sponsoring the transportation of men and women into the Colony. These lists are of value in establishing relationships, the approximate time of arrival in the Colony, and the locality in which 3,000 immigrant ancestors settled." As people usually imported relatives or close friends to gain title to land, these are truly records of importance. Because the records are so early, the certificates and headrights may be the first and only place an ancestor is found should the elements, disease, or the Indians get him first. Many Irish emigrants heading for the US took British ships to Canada as a cheaper means of transportation, often for free. The ships unloaded mainly in Quebec City where there was a well established Irish community and many didn't get any farther for a couple of generations. More single men than single women arrived so an Irish man (more often Catholics than the Orange Irish) would marry a French Canadian woman and the children would grow up in a French community. Culturally Irish but French speaking. I would look for traces in Quebec and look for Boles and Bowles equally. If you give me more particulars, names, dates, places etc. I can see if I have anything. > > From: DollyDnov18@aol.com > Date: 2005/06/04 Sat PM 05:52:25 CDT > To: BOWLES-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: Bowles in Canada web site > > Hi Mary, > May I horn in on your conversation? Hello Mary. How nice to hear from you. I'm interested in all Boles and Bowles in Canada. Really they are probably the same family going back to Ireland. Very few Irish emigrants of the early 1800's knew how to write their names and so became Boles/Bowles/Boalles/Bowls/Boulls/etc. almost anything similar. I am working on a family now that first appeared in Quebec City as Boalles, in Ontario the same family was recorded as Boal but the next generation used Bole except for one brother who used Boiles. I have only a little information on the Boles of New Brunswick. I have brothers Thomas Boles b. 1791 Ireland; John Boles; William Boles (who married in 1832); Skelton b. 1816; Robert b. 1809; Hugh b. 1781 and sisters Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth and Sarah. That was from an Irish in New Brunswick web site. I would love to see the text of the will which you mention and any more family information which you have from the 1800's. I will be building the Bowles in the Maritimes pages some time and would like to include your information if you don't mind sharing. > > From: WCTAGALONG@aol.com > Date: 2005/06/04 Sat PM 05:35:28 CDT > To: BOWLES-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: Bowles in Canada web site > > HELLO TOM > > Your story of how you started looking for dear old grandpa is almost > identical to yours. Hi Mary, May I horn in on your conversation? I'm definitely a newbie to this genea logy thing, and when I first got online seven years ago looking for ancestors all I knew was that my maternal grandpa's mother's name was BOLES, and that she said she was French? HELLO TOM Your story of how you started looking for dear old grandpa is almost identical to yours. The family said we were English then they said no we were Irish. Where we differ is in the spelling of the name my line uses BOLES and I am a direct descendant. My line starts with a ROBERT, JOHN, AND SKELTON BOLES who came to Canada and settled in New Brunswick Canadad before migrating to the USA. The will of John Boles connected the three brothers and listed their children. So I have been trying to follow their living places but have not found the brothers father. There was a HUGH BOLES b. 1796 that was in Canada and a genealogist assumed him to be the father. Yet the will says brother [unless that is an error] Pardon me I didn't mean to get on a story telling jag. I just wanted to compliment you on your site and wish I could connect to you.
