    3. Since I have five other Bowles who match with me we could have a web site, however I'm glad Charley informed everyone about dna testing Haplogroups. For awhile I thought my eyes were slanted. J-2 Ed Bowles said he is thinking of taking dna. Ed is my Uncle James Henery Bowles Grandson. Ed is the son of my 1st coz Walter Carl Bowles who still lives in Ky. Robert Bowles, talked to him on the phone, and he is trying to get his younger brother to take the dna to see if they match. Robert is tied to me from John Brown Bowles who was a brother to my Grandfather Peter Morris Bowles. Dale Bowles

    1. DNA Testing and Haplogroups
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. From some private messages that I have received, it appears that there is some confusion about what the haplogroups signify. In our Bowles project, we presently have three different haplogroups represented: R1b, J2, and I. What I am going to try to do in this message is explain how, when and where we think these groups came into existence. Quoting from FTDNA, "A Haplogroup is defined as all the male descendants of the single person who first showed a SNP mutation. A SNP mutation identifies a group who had a common ancestor far back in time, since SNP's rarely mutate. Each member of a Haplogroup would have the same SNP mutation as the common ancestor. These mutations are extremely rare, and identify a group of people over a period of tens of thousands of years." I won't go into the science behind SNP mutations since it does not help us in our quest to understand haplogroups. During the time of the last Ice Age, most of northern Europe was covered over with ice which restricted man to areas south of the ice pack. During this time there were three distinct areas where humans settled in communities: the Iberian Peninsula, the Balkans, and the Ukraine. If you look at a map today, we are referring to central Spain (the Iberian Peninsula), the area north of Greece (the Balkans), and the area to the northeast of the Black Sea (the Ukraine). These three groups had been isolated so long that naturally their DNA had picked up mutations which can be defined as different haplogroups. As the ice receded about 12,000 years ago, and man could extend his habitat northward, these groups spread out. Those of the Iberian Peninsula moved into western Europe and the British Isles initially. We label them as haplogroup R1b. Those in the Balkans, which we label as haplogroup I, moved across central Europe and up into Scandinavia. The third group, which we label as haplogroup R1a, spread into eastern Europe, central Asia, and as far as India and Pakistan. These three haplogroups account for about 80% of Europe's present day population. Remember that we are using today's names to identify locations. None of these nations existed at that time. In fact this was before mankind adopted agriculture. Around 8,000 years ago peoples of the Middle East had developed the new technology of agriculture, and they began spreading into Europe. There were several haplogroups involved including J2. While they are found predominantly along the Mediterranean coast, over the centuries many also moved north and westward into western Europe and even the British Isles. In the centuries since then, we have experienced what is called genetic drift. That is, while the majority of folks have stayed in the general geographical areas identified above, a significant portion have "drifted" into other regions. You only have to look at the history of the British Isles to understand how this genetic drift brought these different haplogroups together. I won't bore you with a history of England, except to mentions the names of Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and Normans to mention just some of those who found their way to these islands. Haplogroups will tell you almost nothing about your ancestors in the last 500-1000 years. What it will do is give you some idea of where your most distant ancestors began their journey. Comments are welcome. Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]

    2. Charlie, Try contacting Vivan Toole (see message below). I think she is very familiar with Bowles lines in GA. Brenda Date sent: 12 May 2005 Match: Bowles Source: GAWILKES-L@rootsweb.com From: "Vivian Toole" <vtoole@inu.net> Subject: Berry Cochran (POSSIBLE BOWLES/BOOLES CONNECTION???) Dear List Members, I am posting back to several lists because of the locations involved in this COCHRAN (various spellings) surname and the various possible spellings on this surname. The message below was gatewayed to the Oconee County, Georgia, list from a board on ancestry/rootsweb but I am not sure which board unless it was the Oconee County one. I suspect that there might be a BOWLES/BOOLES connections to this COCHRAN surname in early Greene and Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Picture the given name of Littlebury/Littleberry (various spellings) for Berry Cochran. Littleberry/Littlebury seems to have been a popular given name though I don't recall any information on an origin for it such as some prominent public figure or promient family surname. It was just "popular" or used a lot. There are two marriages for a Samuel Cochran and two marriages for a John Cochran and one for a James M. between 1802-1803 and then 1841 and 1852-53 recorded in Greene County, Georgia. Did not check Oglethorpe or I will neve get this posted if I stop to look up a lot of details. I have not researched the Cochran surname as I am a descendent of John Bowles/Booles d. c. 1825 in Greene County, Georgia, and Elizabeth _?_ d.c. 1834 or so. I have not worked on this family in a long time. Just researched it into the ground with no more information to get him out of Georgia. He may have been for North Carolina??? He lived and owned land in the vicinity of Temperance Bell Crossroads, between Woodville and Bethesda Church. The house of my ancestor, Jackson Bowles bc. 1792 m. Betsy Lindsey 1812, was between the cross roads and the road fork on what is now the paved and named road, Randolph Church Road, going from the cross roads to Daniel Springs on Hwy 44 to Washington in Wilkes County. This whole area was once in Wilkes County. The area around Woodville and Temperance Bell Crossroads was once in Oglethorpe County before 1799. Jackson Bowles and probably Betsey Lindsey Bowles are buried in the old cemetery at Temperance Bell Cross Roads. John and Elizabeth Booles/Bowles had a son, Thomas. Greene County marriage records include a marriage of Thomas Bowles to Acintha Cothrine on April 1, 1819 by William Tuggle and a Littleberry Bowles to Cena Cochrane August 29, 1833 by Nathan Hobbs. Back in the time of genealogy research before the Internet before 1995 one Bowles researcher on the line of this Thomas Bowles proposed that these marriages were a case of a widow Cochrane (various spellings) with a daughter by the same or similar given name had married Thomas Bowles and that children by previous marriages had also married each other. Or some version thereof. Unfortunately, I believe that that researcher is now deceased. As I wrote above, it has been a long time since I have worked on my Bowles family. Just no new information. If I take time to look up all the details, I will never get this posted. There were two other Bowles/Booles men in the same area at the same time that I have not been able to tie together to my John Booles, Sr. William Booles was a Rev. Sol. from North Carolina and his widow received a pension. His descendents mostly moved further west eventually to Louisiana. The other was Jesse Boles/Booles/Bowles who died early with a will in Oglethorpe County. Some of his descendents eventually showed up in Taliaferro County Census after it was formed c. 1827. I have never found anyone researching the line of Jesse Bowles. A SAR line has been established for William Booles, Sr. There were some other assorted Bowles that I have not tied into these lines in early Georgia. Have had a real job sorting out who belonged to which man and finally gave up on matching some of the early John Booles references. Hope this helps someone. Maybe a new lead on my Bowles/Booles however far fetched. One can always hope. I am not currently on the Bowles list though some of my early posting should be in the archives. 1. Re: Nathaniel Bowles
    2. I had the census information for 1870 and reviewing the 1880 census for the same family, Patricia JOHNSON, Thomas H. BOWLES' mother-in-law was no longer residing with Thomas' family leading me to believe she might have passed away before 1880 although I haven't confirmed her death through another source. I tend to think Thomas, on the 1850 Census below, is Elijah's brother but haven't been able to confirm that fact, using another source. The age for Thomas matches on both the 1850 and 1870 censuses and the mother, head of housewhole, is born in Virginia which matches the scant family information passed down to me. My problem is my BOWLES line ends with my 86 year old great aunt who currently resides in Crossville, Tennessee. I have no male BOWLES from which to extract a DNA sample. Perhaps I might find a male descendant in the William C., brother of Hiram Purcell BOWLES, line. If you are interested in more data on the descendancy of Thomas H. through son Hiram Purcell BOWLES I can provide that to you. Thanks, for your response. 3. Christopher Columbus Bowles is said to have been born 27 Apr 1829 to Nathaniel V. and Jane Puryear Bowles. He is also said to have married Corilla Murrell, daughter of Robert and Emily Murrell. I know that C. C. Bowles, age 21, was a clerk in a store in Glasgow KY in 1850; and that Robert Murrell was a merchant in Glasgow in that year, with a daughter named Corilla who was 16 years old. Can anyone provide documentation of a marriage between Christopher C. Bowles and Corilla Murrell? Also, does anyone know anything about either person after the 1850 census? Thanks, Charlie Hartley

    1. Thomas & Sarah Holman Bowles-from Robert Bowles 6/8/05

    3. Dear Charles- Following is a brief summary of my Bowles line as I believe it to be and some additional comments. I do, of course, have a great many more details that I will share. Just let me know what you would like to have. I am: Robert Howard Bowles born 4 July 1951 in Dayton, TN. The first child (of three) of Wayne Robert Bowles and Charlotte Louise Holtsinger. My Dad, Wayne Robert Bowles was born 10 December 1914 in Boyer (Pocahontas county), West Virginia. He was the fifth child (of six) of Charles Henry Bowles and Nannie Belle Benedict. He was killed in a construction accident 25 June 1968 in Oak Ridge, TN and is buried in Rockwood, TN. My Grandfather, Charles Henry Bowles was born 18 November 1872 in Glasgow, KY. He was the third (of eight) child of John Brown Bowles and Margaret Ellen Jarvis. He died 13 May 1949 in Knoxville, TN and is buried in Robbinsville, NC. My Greatgrandfather, John Brown Bowles was born 8 January 1837 in Barren County, KY. He was the ninth (of nine) child of Thomas T. Bowles and Mary (Polly) Brown. He died 17 April 1923 and is buried in the Walnut Hill Cemetery near Bon Ayr, KY. I have not personally researched the line from Thomas T. Bowles back. I do have a copy of an 1880 deed where Mary Bowles (the assumed widow of Thomas T.) and the other heirs sold the Bowles property in Barren county. Interestingly it mentions and is signed by both John Brown Bowles and his wife Margaret and Peter M. Bowles and his wife Delila. It is also signed by the other seven children of Thomas T. and Mary. As you can well imagine, I have spent the last two weeks pouring over my genealogical papers looking for some elusive disconnect that would explain the mismatched DNA test results between me and Dale Bowles. I feel like the evidence that supports my descent from Thomas T. Bowles is pretty concrete. However, when I trace Dale and Ed Bowles line back I see no problems with their claims either. Their line back looks pretty concrete also. I have found two discrepancies that do not quite dovetail, but both seem to be fairly explainable. (1) In the 1870 census for Barren county Peter M. Bo(w)les age is listed as 53. That would put him as being born 1 1/2-2 years before the 27 February 1819 marriage of Thomas T. Bowles and Mary (Polly) Brown. I have, however, looked at enough old census reports to realize that this may very well be only a mistake. I have seen several other sources on the Internet that give his birth date as "about 1820". I intend to look further at the Barren county censuses and see if I can find other years that may clarify this. (2) Thus far Dale Bowles is a 24/25 match with kit 29356 William Bowles 1804 NC, a 24/25 match with kit 29524 John Bowles 1777 VA and a 12/12 match with kit 6532 Nells Bowles 1845 GA. I have not yet found anything that ties these Bowleses to the Thomas T. Bowles line. Perhaps the tie is further back at the brothers of Thomas Bowles b: 1761 or his father? It would be great if we had the DNA results for a male descendent of one of Thomas T's other sons-Henry Holman Bowles, Joseph Bowles or Thomas Nathaniel Bowles. Right now I am feeling almost guilty. Like all of this confusion is somehow my fault. Talk with you later. 3. Although this message is directed specifically to the participants in the Bowles DNA Project, it may be of interest to others as well. As a participant in the Bowles DNA Project, you may now choose to add your 12 marker Y-DNA results (and your mtDNA genetic data if you ordered that test as well) to the Genographic Project sponsored by National Geographic. Additional information about this project may be found at this site: [https://www5.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/]. To add your results to the Genographic Project, go to your personal page at Family Tree DNA and select the tab titled Genographic Project. There is a $15 fee for this and it must be paid by credit card. I have added my personal Y-DNA results to the project. It should be interesting.
