    1. Thomas Bowles 1708, New Kent Co
    2. Dale, here is the information I was speaking of. It was Beaver Dam Swamp not Creek, OPPS. The more I look at this, it could be that John Bowles Sr was a son of Thomas rather than Henry? (Probably not.) I think what happen here, is when John and Mary came back to Hanover Co from Middlesex Co, they settled on Isaac Winston land in 1755.At that point they had the same neighbors as the Thomas Bowles group. We also know that Henry and Nathaniel Bowe (probably sons of John and Mary) had land in Hanover Co in 1764. Nathaniel Bowe died 1785 on Stoney Run the same place the Thomas Bowles group lived. My thoughts have been that Thomas Bowles had a son named John Bowles that married Sarah Knight. John Bowles went to Middlesex Co, John Bowles went to Goochland Co, John Bowles went to Henrico Co, in the mid to upper 1740's, which one is which??? Leathel, Jan.1,1708. In obedience to an order of NEW KENT COUNTY Court bearing date Jan. 28, 1708, appointing Christopher Clark, surveyor of a new horse bridge, which should be made over BEAVER DAM SWAMP, he applying himself to this Vestry for assistance: Its therefore ordered that Alexander McKenny, Thomas Caisey(KERSEY), WILLIAM HOGG, THOMAS BOWLES, Edward Clark, THOMAS BAILEY, THOMAS JOHNSON, ISAAC WINSTON and Nathaniel Hodkinson give their attendance in making the said bridge. (p. 17. ) 22 Nov 1711 lands were processioned for the following landowners: CHRISTOPHER CLARK, WILLIAM HOGG, Alex McKensy, John Martin, THOMAS JOHNSON and THOMAS BOWLES. The same persons were charged with land 9 Oct 1715 and 18 March 1719. (St. Paul's Parish Vestry)" 16 June 1714, Thomas Kersey, 150 acs. (N.L.) New Kent Co. beg. At Powhite Swamp by a bridge; 16 June 1714, p 139. Imp. Of 3 pers: THOMAS JOHNSON, MARGARETT JOHNSON, ISBELLA BOWLES. 28 Sept. 1732, Thomas Williams, 157 acs. (Escheat L.) Hanover Co. formerly New Kent Co.; in St. Paul's Par; on low side of Woodings & BRANDY BRANCHES; adj. Land of Macon & BOWLES; John White & Dennett; 28 Sept. 1732,p 532. 1. Thomas app 1630
    2. Dale Bowles
    3. Leathel On 6-30-05 You wrote that Thomas was at Beaver Dam Creek in 1708 He had two sons -Thomas and William Could William be Born 1690 Could his Dad Be born appr 1650 Could John be the father of this Thomas? Its taken me a bit of time but I found Old Church, beaver dam creek and chickahomity bluff probably overlooking the Swamp. I probably should only send this to Leathel but maybe someone else could use this. Dale Dale Bowles major6502@earthlink.net Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

    3. ===================================================================== Match: Boles Source: GEN-MAT-HX-L@rootsweb.com From: "Helen" <Helenh@pdq.net> Subject: Huguenots - See Some Names - A Classic Masterpiece History of the Huguenot Emigration to America, Two Volumes in One, Charles W. Baird, 1885, 1991. This is a thick dark green clothcovered hardback with gilt printing, 6 x 9-3/4, xix plus 354 pages in the Volume One part, and 445 pages in Volume Two part, plus a number of unpaged maps and other illustrations - probably close to 825 pages altogether.Out of Print! The book is in near new condition with the only flaw being three very small initials written on the inside of the back cover.Otherwise, in nice unmarked condition with no dogeared, loose or torn pages and no scuffs or stubbed corners. Per a review elsewhere: "This is the standard work on the Huguenot emigration to America. Baird's work is so thorough that there a few Huguenot names for which some new fact or illustration is not supplied. The bulk of the work is devoted to the important emigraion of French Protestants (via the Netherlands and Great Britain) in the last quarter of the 17th century to the time of the Revolutionary War. Throughout the text, in both narratives and records, there is a profusion of genealogical detail on the early Huguenot families of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia, later families having dispersed to Pennsylvania and other states. In addition, extensive genealogical notices are given in footnotes, with references to sources, thus serving as a guide to further information." Elsewhere, some old reviews state: "A book that has a longstanding appeal and is com complete that it still remains the basic source book for research into Huguenot origins. A reference that should be read by everyone who has just discovered their Huguenot roots. Any library that has even a small Huguenot collection will need this book as the basic source book. All Huguenot descendants should have a copy of this book to read and help understand the meaning of liberty and freedom we as Americans hold so dear." - National Huguenot Society Newsletter, Feb. 1992. "It is of considerable value to historians, and genealogists will be well served by the lists of names and by the extreme care exercised by Dr. Baird; the transcriptions of names are impeccable..." - Library Journal, April, 1967. Just the Table of Contents in Volume One covers nine pages, while that of Volume Two covers another nine pages. There are a number of appendices and a 42 page double columned index. 3. You had me searching around as well but this is all I found. It mentions people gathering there when the parliament burned which validates the family story. I hadn't seen this article before. Also, there is a picture of the Bowles Lunch in Ottawa if anyone wants to see that. The picture shows a sign for a Bowles Billiard Academy upstairs so probably the same setup as the Hamilton outlet. "The Bowles Lunch on Sparks St. was often frequented by journalists, sports figures and businessmen. Some who later became parliamentarians also came here, such as Norman Rogers, secretary to Prime Minister Mackenzie King, and George McIlraith, who became a minister and later a senator. Reportedly some Ottawa residents who watched the first Parliament Building burn on a cold night in early 1916 went there for warmth and the sharing of experiences. Ottawa's longest-serving mayor, J.E. Stanley Lewis often lunched there. Lewis was one of the founding members of the Ottawa Knockers' Club, a charitable organisation made of prominent Ottawa businessmen who used to "knock" the government. The Club was founded in the Sparks St. Bowles Lunch in 1942 and commemorated by a brass plaque in a lunchroom table. Ottawa's Bowles Lunch was taken over during the 1950s by Scott's Restaurants, which also purchased the Toronto Bowles Lunchrooms about the same time." > > From: Randi Meetzen <meetzen@sbcglobal.net> > Date: 2005/07/02 Sat PM 09:49:26 CDT > To: BOWLES-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: Bowles Lunch Question > > Hi Tom, I knew I could count on you! > There is a website for a town called Hamilton in Canada that had a Bowles Lunch and Bowles Billiard Academy on King Street.
