On June 14, I indicated that we had a potential candidate from the Thomas and Sarah Holman Bowles line who might be willing to do the DNA test, and requested some funding help for it. Regrettably, this candidate has apparently decided not to participate even though we had commitments for the funding. My thanks to the good folks who volunteered to help fund it. We are still seeking another candidate from this line. There are three major branches in this line: Nathaniel V. Bowles who married Jane Puryor (Puryear) Thomas T. Bowles who married Mary Brown Joseph Farrar Bowles who married Sarah Farrar Hensley Help us find a candidate. Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]
I have Christopher Lawson and his wife from 1624 to 1638 in James City Co. I believe that Thomas Lawson who died in 1624 was a son of Christopher and Alice Lawson. In 1638, Christopher had at least 650 ac. land in James City Co. By 1637 Christopher had transported 5 persons, one being ANTHONY ?. Anybody know who Anthony is? I have done a little more research on this John Bowles who died about 1796. I don't know if this Thomas Bowles who married Grace Jeffrey had anything to do with John Bowles or not, it sure looks like it could? We know that IF Thomas is a son of John then this John is not John and Mary from Middlesex Co, because their Thomas was born 1744. NOW if John and Thomas were brothers, were they brothers to Benjamin (Will 1780 NC)? Anybody got a handle on Thomas and Grace Bowles? Is Jeffrey Bowles their son? ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: GEN-MAT-L@rootsweb.com From: "Broad View Books" <orders@broadviewbooks.com> Subject: Genealogical and Family History of the State of Vermont (Volume 1 only) Genealogical and Family History of the State of Vermont (Volume 1 only) (snip) Compiled under the Editorial Supervision of the Honorable Hiram Carleton Baltimore: Clearfield Publishing, 2000 reprint of the 1903 edition. Hiram Carleton, a prominent Vermont judge and six-time president of the Vermont Historical Society, was commissioned by the Lewis Publishing Company to prepare this magisterial collection of illustrated biographical/genealogical essays of noted Vermonters and their families. Without gainsaying Mr. Carleton's prodigious undertaking, it is helpful to point out that the arrangement and contents of the two volumes, originally published in 1903, follows a pattern for which the Lewis Publishing Company would become famous over the first quarter of this century. At the outset of the first volume we are provided with an Introduction explaining Vermont's unique place among the states and drawing attention to milestones in its history. Then commence the sketches, most of which focus on a contemporary of the compiler. In some cases, the essays offer a derivation or origin for the surname of that essay. In all cases, the family history is traced forward from the oldest known ancestor of the line to the family member (living or memorialized) featured in the sketch, for whom, in turn, a biography--often with photograph--is provided. This is followed, frequently, by additional, collateral lines linked to the subject of the essay. Many of the lineages go back to 16th-century England, still others brim with connections to Massachusetts and the other New England states, yet on the whole they constitute a totally unique assemblage of Vermont families. Finally, while the work as a whole contains upwards of 30,000 references to kith and kin, the name indexes found at the front of the two volumes identify nearly 1,200 principal descendants of the following main families treated: Index to Volume 1: Abernathy, Abernethy, Adams, Agan, Akeley, Alexander, Allen, Archibald, Arkley, Arthur, Atkins, Auld, Averill, Backus, Bailey, Baldwin, Bancroft, Barber, Barclay, Barden, Barney, Barrows, Barry, Barstow, Bartlett, Batchelder, Beach, Beckett, Benedict, Benjamin, Berry, Bickford, Bigelow, Bingham, Bisbee, Bixby, Blackmer, Blodgett, Boardman, Booth, Bottum, Bouton, Boutwell, Bowles, Boyce, Boyd, Bradley, Braisted, Bridgeman, Briggs, Bristol, Brooks, Brown, Bryant, Buck, Buckham, Bullard, Bullock, Burbank, Burdett, Burdick, Burgess, Burt, Bushnell, Buswell, Byington, Cabot, Cain, Cainfield, Cannon, Carleton, Carney, Carter, Chamberlin, Chapin, Chapman, Chase, Childs, Chittenden, Clark, Clarke, Clemons, Cochran, Cole, Collins, Colton, Colvin, Conant, Converse, Covell, Cowles, Crandall, Crane, Cristy, Crosby, Cross, Crowell, Cummins, Currier, Cushman, Cutler, Daggett, Darling, Davenport, Davis, Dean, Denny, Derby, Dewey, Dillingham, Dodge, Doud, Drake, Drew, Drysdale, DuBois, Dubuc, Dumas, Dunnett, Dustin, Dwinell, Dyer, Eastman, Eaton, Edmunds, Egerton, Eldridge, Ellis, Emerson, Englesby, Estey, Fairbanks, Farnham, Farrington, Fay, Ferguson, Ferrin, Field, Fillmore, Fiske, Fleetwood, Foote, Forbush, Foss, Foster, Fowler, Francisco, Fuller, Fullerton, Gates, Gay, Gee, Gill, Gillette, Gilmore, Gleason, Gleed, Godfrey, Goodell, Goodenough, Goodhue, Goodrich, Gordon, Gove, Grant, Graves, Greene, Greenleaf, Grout, Hall, Hamlen, Hanks, Hartness, Haselton, Haskins, Hatch, Hathorn, Hays, Heath, Heaton, Henry, Hickok, Hicks, Hill, Hoit, Holbrook, Holden, Holton, Hooker, Hopkins, Horsford, Houghton, Howard, Howden, Howe, Howland, Hubbell, Huling, Humphrey, Hungerford, Hunt, Huntington, Huntley, Huse, Imlah, Irish, Jackson, James, Jenne, Johnson, Johonnot, Jones, Joyce, Kellogg, Kelton, Kemp, Kenyon, Keyes, King, Kingsley, Knight, Laird, Lamson, Landon, Larrabee, Lasher, Lathrop, Lawrence, Leland, Linsley, Livingston, Luce, Lyman, Mansur, Marr, Marshall, Martin, Mason, Mattison, McGee, Meacham, Merriam, Michaud, Miller, Miner, Moody, Morrill, Morse, Moseley, Moulton, Murray, Nelson, Nichols, Noble, North, Noyes, Nutting, Ormsbee, Packard, Page, Parish, Parker, Parmenter, Parsons, Partch, Pearl, Peck, Peckett, Perrin, Perry, Pettee, Phelps, Pierson, Pike, Pilon, Pingree, Pirie, Place, Plumley, Porter, Potter, Powell, Powers, Pratt, Proctor, Puffer, Putnam, Racette, Randall, Ranny, Ray, Read, Redfield, Reeves, Richardson, Roberts, Robinson, Roby, Rogers, Root, Roscoe, Ross, Russel, Sawyer, Seaver, Shackett, Shepard, Sherridan, Sibley, Slocum, Small, Smith, Sneden, Sparhawk, Spaulding, Sprague, Squire, Stannard, Starr, Start, Stevens, Stewart, Stone, St. Peters, Stranahan, Taggart, Talcott, Taylor, Thayer, Thomas, Thompson, Thomson, Tiffany, Tinker, Tinkham, Torrey, Trull, Twitchell, Tyler, Van Patten, Varney, Vilas, Viles, Walbridge, Wales, Walker, Wallace, Warren, Watson, Webster, Weeks, Welling, Wells, Weston, Whitcomb, Wicker, Wilbur, Wilcox, Willard, Williams, Wilson, Winch, Wing, Wood, Woodbury, Woolson, Worthington, Wright, Wyman, Yale. Denim cloth covered hardback, 8-1/2 x 11, 287 pages, the end pages feature maps of the Nantucket area giving locations of topographical features and location of the Way house. The only flaw is some very very light foxing to the edges of the closed pages and perhaps, just a faint trace of a musty smell. There are no markings of any kind, loose or dog eared pages. It is believed this is another book from the library of Willard Heiss and, thus, may have been stored for a few years. The book has a few illustrations, charts, and an everyname index. It is just filled with transcriptions of marriage certificates, including the names of the witnesses to the marriage of this Quaker couple, deeds, wills, and other records. There are interesting facts given, such as being lost at sea, removal to North Carolina, etc, and the end notes are most helpful. There is some information on the very early Ways of England, but the bulk of the book centers on John and Mary Long Way, of Nantucket, and their descendants. Of their children - William, Sarah, Elizabeth, John, Paul, Seth, and Anna - the authors have provided as much information and carried lines down as far as possible. Son John was lost at sea, and his wife, was "cousin" Elizabeth Long, daughter of Samuel and Lydia Coffin Long; Paul was also lost at sea and his wife, Mary Macy removed to Guilford County, North Carolina where she married 2) James Anthony. Such was the life in this seafaring community. Descendants were to remove to North Carolina, Ohio, Randolph and Wayne Counties, Indiana, and elsewhere. I just cannot stress enough the personal information that has been amassed in this compilation which serves to bring these people to life. The authors then sought to bring forward as much information as possible on other, apparently unrelated or unplaced Way lines. Truly, a nice book. Notes for AARON STUBBS: Hi Eilene, I am related to the Stubbs through the Jesse that had George, Jennet,etc.... Nancy Stubbs Nail, Everett (that died in War of 1812), John (married Mary Ann Nail), Jesse Thomas, Rachel R. Stubbs Boles, Robert R. Stubbs, Penelope Stubbs White, and Alfred Stubbs were all the children of Aaron Stubbs. Aaron and my Jesse left North Carolina and went to Roane Tennesse after their father, Everett, died in 1793. You said you found two of Andrew & Nancy Nail's daughters. Would you please share the info with me? I have down that their children are possibly Elizabeth, Margaret, female, and John, but that is all I have on that family. Also, do you know anything about John Stubbs and Mary Ann Nail's family? Please let me know your connection to this family - which child you descend from, etc. Thanks, Moiya Stubbs 11/26/2001 Hi Beth, I just wanted to correct a couple of things you said. Penelope Stubbs White is not the daughter of George & Frances Matlock Stubbs. George is my 3rd great-grandfather and the son of Jesse Stubbs. Jesse had a brother named Aaron. Jesse and Aaron left NC and moved to Roane Co TN after their father, Everett Stubbs died in the late 1790s. My Jesse's line stayed in TN until George's children were all grown, then some stayed in TN, some moved to IL, and my line moved to IA. Your Penelope is the daughter of Aaron Stubbs, whose children (most of them, anyway) moved to Missouri. Did Penelope Stubbs White marry a man named Daniel Pittman after Bloomer died? Your cousin, Moiya Stubbs 11/26/2001 Re: STUBBS from Mo. to Tx. Your cousin, Moiya Hi Moiya, Thanks for the correction re: Penelope Stubbs lineage. I will e-mail you with further information. Yes, she did marry Bloomer's cousin Daniel Pittman after the death of Bloomer. They then moved from Cass CO. MO to Galena, KS. where she eventually died in 1899....Beth Beth Morrison Eha Notes for BLOOMER WHITE: 1850 Cass County Missouri Census, 16 District, pg. 125b Bloomer White 31 Farmer TN Penelope 30 TN Rachel L 14 TN George M 12 TN Richard H D 9 TN Robert H 6 TN James M 4 TN Mahala E 2 MO Notes for DANIEL PITTMAN: Household Record 1880 United States Census ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Household: Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace Daniel PITTMAN Self M Male W 67 TN Farmer TN TN Penelopy PITTMAN Wife M Female W 65 TN Kps Hse TN TN James WHITE SSon Male W 28 IN --- --- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Census Place Dolan, Cass, Missouri Family History Library Film 1254679 NA Film Number T9-0679 Page Number 34D viii.
