Sir, I have a Sarah Bowles b: ca 1775 m: a John Hicks b:ca 1754 d:28 Oct 1837. If anybody comes up with a link to these people I could tie in a bunch of Bowles and Hicks. I have nobody on my side to send in a DNA of the Bowles. Just FYI. Charles Hartley <hartley@iglou.com> wrote:If you have solid information that traces your Bowles ancestry back to the early to middle 1700's in Maryland, Virginia, or North Carolina, AND your line is not currently represented in our group of DNA participants, we need a male Bowles from your line to join our project. We have several participants who can trace back to the middle or late 1700's and need help establishing the next generation back. You may hold the key. For example, participant #31654 can trace back to Alexander Hamilton Bowles who was born about 1793 in Virginia and is in Henry County VA later in life. However, he does not seem to match up with other Henry County Bowles families, so we need help locating his ancestry. Again, you may hold the clue we need. All of our current results and links to the participating family trees may be found at [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/bowlesdna.html]. I've recently updated the family trees with any additional information I've found available. Please visit these pages and examine these trees. Then, if you are a male Bowles, or have contact with one, who is not currently involved with the project, consider carefully if adding your DNA results to our project can help you and/or someone else make that next critical step back in time. I'm waiting to hear from you. Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator [mailto:hartley@iglou.com] GO POKES
Sigh... I just did it again. I clicked on reply to respond to a message that I assumed was a private message, only to discover too late that the message had come to me through the list, so my reply was going back to the list. We are all guilty of doing this. Sometimes its just a nuisance, sometimes it can be a mistake because we inadvertently send really private information to everyone who is subscribed to the list, or who will ever use a search engine to read old messages. We all need to remember that our reply to any message that comes to us from the list will automatically go back to the list unless we manually change the address in the To: field. This is one reason why when I send a message to the list for which I expect possible private replies that I include a link in the message that allows you to respond directly to me. It looks like this: [mailto:hartley@iglou.com] Clicking on that link should open up a new message in your mail program that is addressed to me. You can do the same thing if you wish. Just replace my email address with yours like this: [mailto:somebody@somewhere.com] You can even get fancy if you like and add a message field like this: [mailto:hartley@iglou.com?Subject=Bowles DNA Project] Anyway, I'm going to try to be more careful about where my responses go (but I bet I'll mess up again). If you have solid information that traces your Bowles ancestry back to the early to middle 1700's in Maryland, Virginia, or North Carolina, AND your line is not currently represented in our group of DNA participants, we need a male Bowles from your line to join our project. Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]

As my family DNA shows a total lack of matches, I would also encourage any Bowles from England to participate as well .mine seems to be the only one of our line in America. This is not surprising to us, we expected that, but all the same ,any Bowles originating from England or France are urged to participate! Thank you R. Dear Charles, I only showed the direct descent from William to my grandparents in the descent I sent you -- actually most of the people in the 1800-1820 Stokes county censuses are related. The only ones I can't place into this family are: 1800 Federal Census: North Carolina, Stokes County, Salisbury Frances Bowles: 20010-20100-00 (page 618) 1820 Federal Census: North Carolina, Stokes County Elizabeth Boles: 400000-20010-00 (page 332) Joseph Boles: 200010-30010-01 (page 334) "My" Joseph appears in the Surry co. 1820 census. I have noticed reference to this Joseph, but I don't know his ancestry. A note on these families -- they are often confused with the William Boyle family who appears in the early Surry county records. This family lived near the Moravians while the William Bools/Boles family lived on Neatman and Town Fork creeks . Of course to confuse the issue, Rebecca Boles (daughter of James Boles and his wife Mary) married Hugh Boyles. I also should note that the reference to "My" William Boles/Bools's fifth child (an unnamed daughter) probably comes from an error I made many years ago when I found a reference to a baptism of the child of the daughter of "William Boles" in the published records of the Moravians. According to the Moravian Archives, this event was the baptism of Johannes Stanley, the son of Agnes (daughter of William Boyles and his wife, Eve) and Isais Stanley. I have no knowledge of any other children of William Bools/Boles beside the four sons listed below. Perhaps this Boyles family should be included in the DNA study? Here are the first three generations on my line, perhaps my entry should be updated. Hi Charley, I have been sitting quietly over here for some time now watching the posts carefully and waiting for more info on the Bowles family from Montgomery Co., VA. On the info I sent in for the DNA project, I only tracked the family back to David J. BOWLES, because the next step back was Peter BOWLES and there just wasn't enough info at the time for me to verify exactly what was going on with this family. This is what I have come up with so far: Peter (middle initial unknown) BOWLES b.1800, VA. d. 1867 Montgomery Co., VA married first Nancy HALE, b. 1798, VA. d., abt. 1846, Montgomery Co., VA Their children: William Thomas BOWLES/BOLES, b. Sept.28, 1828 in Montgomery Co., VA. d. Jan 4, 1900 Douglas, Kansas. Married Mary Elizabeth BURKETT, 1866. Mary Agnes BOWLES, b. 1830, Montgomery Co., VA, married Elija SHAVER Julina BOWLES, b. 1832, Montgomery Co., VA Catherine V. BOWLES, b. 1835, Montgomery Co., VA Now here is the problem area: I have concluded that Nancy HALE died abt. 1846 and Peter married Susan. There is a possibility that her last name is HYLTON, but I cannot verify this yet. 1870 Fed. Census records have her as Susanna. This Susan was born in 1826. I do not think that she is Peter's daughter because it appears that she is the mother of the children in the family starting in 1848. Peter and Susan's children: Eliza J. BOWLES, 1848, VA Nancy A. BOWLES, 1850, VA Virginia BOWLES, 1851, VA Peter BOWLES, 1854, VA Margaretta BOWLES, 1856, VA David J. BOWLES, August 1860, VA George H. BOWLES, 1862, VA Nancy H. BOWLES, 1863, VA Charles E. BOWLES, 1867, VA Peter died in 1867, after this child was born, perhaps related to the Civil War, although I find no record of him having served. From the 1860 Federal Census for Montgomery Co., VA Peter BOWLES, age 58, est. birth year 1800, VA Susan BOWLES, " 30, " 1829, VA Eliza J. BOWLES, " 11, " 1848, VA Nancy E.(or A.) BOWLES, " 9. " 1850, VA Virginia BOWLES, " 7 " 1852, VA Peter BOWLES, " 5, " 1854, VA Margaretta BOWLES " 3, " 1856, VA David J. BOWLES " 1/12 " August 1860, VA On the 1870 Federal Census for Montgomery Co., VA, Peter, the son, last name spelled BOWELS (I always loved that spelling when it was MY last name), born 1854/55 is working as a farm laborer in the household of Samuel Supler. On this census Peter is said to be 17 instead of 15, but I am certain it is the same Peter. Also, Peter's sister Margaretta (Margaret BOLES), b. 1856, is doing housework for David SLUPER in 1870 in Montgomery Co., VA. On the 1880 Census for Montgomery Co., VA, William T. BOWLES, son of Peter and Nancy, is listed as W. T. BOLES, age 5, with wife Mary E., age 34, and their children, John D., age 11, Delia H., age 9, Hibbert N., age 5, and Lula W., age 1 month. Also, on the 1880 Fed. Census for Montgomery Co., VA, Susan BOWLS, born 1826, wife of Peter, born 1800, is living with Andrew (?) Furrow as stepmother. I don't understand yet who how she is stepmother to Andrew. I know there is a connection between this BOWLES family and the FURROW family that goes back several generations. John Wesley BOLES, my son's grandfather's second wife was Delia Ethel FURROW, b. 1896. On the 1870 Fed. Census for Montgomery Co., VA, Susanna BOWLES is evidently widowed and still has her children David J., age 10, George H., age 8, and Charles E., age 3 still at home. Two houses down is the FURROW family headed by Abraham, age 69, and next door on the other side is the family of James FURROW, age 29. Susan's daughter Nancy BOWLES is living with the family doing housework. I really do not think that the father of this Peter BOWLES born 1800, VA is Thomas BOWLES married to Jemima Day. The DNA does not show a relationship to the Hanover BOWLES family, but rather leans more towards England and perhaps North Carolina. I wonder if they came from Pennsylvania through Maryland to Virginia. Does anyone have more info on this line? Susan Walters

Thought I'd tease someone with Maryland roots. These are from the family tree of DNA participant #33183 who traces back to John and Susanna Bowles, grandparents of the William S. Bowles below. If your Bowles came from Maryland in the 1700's or very early 1800's, maybe you should be trying to match with this line. 1850 Federal Census: Maryland, St. Mary's County, ED 4, page 323B household 1170/1139 Wm. Participant #32415's results are in. At this time there are no matches to it. This is one that we will need to work on. So far, this is want we know about this line: 1 Richard Bowles b. abt 1818 in England; d. 1880 + Dianna Smith b. abt 1809 at Gibraltar 2 George Bowles + Ida May Rogers b. abt 1880 3 Harley Edward Bowles b. abt 1902 in Ohio; d. 26 Jul 1974 + Vera Mae Strickling b. 19 Feb 1901; d. abt 1929 3 Otto Boales-Bowles b. abt 1898 3 Lena Boales b. abt 1899 + Mary Saxton B: 1856 3 Arville Bowles 2 William Bowles b. abt 1845; d. 25 Oct 1913 It may be interesting to note that this line appears to be nearly completely restricted to northwestern Europe. These would most likely have been common within Viking populations. One lineage of this group extends down into central Europe. Our DNA participant #31624 traces back to Edward Booles of Oxfordshire, England. In his chart located at [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/bowlesdna/31624.html] his line seems to come down to the family of Thomas and Sarah Bowles of Daglingworth in Gloucestershire. I have located this family in the 1861 England census and then traced part of it in 1871, 1881 and 1891. The results are given below. 1861 England Census: Gloucestershire, Daglingworth, District 10, page 15 Thomas Bowles, head, married, 52, shepherd, birthplace: Kempsford, Gloucestershire Sarah Bowles, wife, married, 45, birthplace: Quenington, Gloucestershire John Bowles, son, unmarried, 18, shepherd, birthplace: Hatherop, Gloucestershire William Bowles, son, unmarried, 14, shepherd, birthplace: Hatherop, Gloucestershire Edward Bowles, son, unmarried, 10, shepherd, birthplace: Hatherop, Gloucestershire Fanny Bowles, daughter, 8, scholar, birthplace: Westwell, Oxfordshire Mary Bowles, daughter, 6, scholar, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Thomas Bowles, son, 4, scholar, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire George Bowles, son, 2, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Elizabeth Bowles, daughter, 3 months, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire 1871 England Census: Gloucestershire, Daglingworth, District 10, page 5 Thomas Bowles, head, married, 64, shepherd, birthplace: Kempsford, Gloucestershire Charlotte Bowles, wife, married, 53, shepherd's wife, birthplace: Cirencester, Gloucestershire Edward Bowles, son, unmarried, 20, butcher, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Sarah Shill, step-daughter, unmarried, 16, outdoor servant, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Thomas Shill, step-son, 13, farm servant, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire George Bowles, son, 13, farm servant, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Bessy Bowles, daughter, 10, scholar, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire On page 2, Thomas Bowles, age 14, appears to be working with William Archer, a butcher. 1881 England Census: Gloucestershire, Dglingworth, District 10, page 2 Charles Shill, head, unmarried, agricultural laborer, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Thomas Shill, brother, unmarried, agricultural laborer, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire George Bowles, brother-in-law, unmarried, agricultural laborer, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire -- Charlotte Bowles, head, widow, 64, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Sarah Shill, step-daughter, 26, domestic servant, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire 1881 England Census: Gloucestershire, Daglingworth, District 10, page 7 William Bowles, head, married, 34, shepherd, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Charlotte Jane Bowles, wife, married, 34, shepherd's wife, birthplace: Duntisbourne Rouse, Gloucestershire William George Bowles, son, 9, scholar, birthplace: Duntisbourne Rouse, Gloucestershire Frederick Bowles, son, scholar, birthplace: Duntisbourne Rouse, Gloucestershire Eliza Ann Bowles, daughter, 4, scholar, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Emily Bowles, daughter, 1, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire 1891 England Census: Gloucestershire, Driffield, District 14, page 6 William Bowles, head, married, 44, shepherd, birthplace: Westwell, Oxfordshire Charlotte Jane Bowles, wife, married, 44, birthplace: Duntisbourne Rouse, Gloucestershire Emily Bowles, daughter, 11, scholar, birthplace: Daglingworth, Gloucestershire Walter Emily Bowles, son, 9, scholar, birthplace: Driffield, Gloucestershire Ernest Thomas Bowles, son, 5, scholar, birthplace: Driffield, Gloucestershire Abel Percy, nephew, 10 months, birthplace: Union, Gloucestershire Perhaps this information will inspire some of the descendants of this line to join our DNA project.
