She married John Montgomery Housewright Senior and the had either 9 or 10 children. John was born abt 1760 in Amherst and he married her at the age of 14. Andrew Yeargan came from Wales in 1735 and was a minister in the Roanoke and James River valleys of Virginia. The first Methodist Chapel built in Virginia was named "Yeargan's Chapel." He married Ony Bowles and they had eleven children. The family moved to North Carolina after the Revolutionary War, and, in the early 1800s, moved on to Greenville, South Carolina, where Rev. Yeargan died. His son, Benjamin Yeargan, served as an assistant surgeon in the Revolutionary War, and married Sarah Morgan Patterson. He donated the land and was an organizer and trustee of the University of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Benjamin's son, Bardett Yeargan, was bom in 1790 in Chapel Hill, and moved to Williamson County, Tennessee in 1812. He was married to Mary A. Lawrence, and they raised twelve children. Among these was Nathan A. F. Yeargan, bom in Tennessee in 1821. In 1844, he married Charlotte Sears Davis, and they had twelve children. They came to Dallas in 1855 and built a log cabin at what is now the McKinney Avenue-Fitzhugh intersection. During the Civil War, Nathan was a Confederate Army captain. In 1884, he left the First Methodist Church of Dallas, which was difficult to get to in bad weather and organized the McKinney Avenue Methodist Mission, with eleven members. As a teenage drover, he helped herd 5,000 cattle from Dallas to California in 1868, overcoming deserts and Comanche and Apache Indians in the four-month drive. In 1890, he married May Webb, and, in 1905, they became the parents of today's DCPA member. May Ruth Griffin. She married (1) Henry Clark White in 1921 and divorced in 1938. Yeargan (1896-1974) and his friend, Reveaux Bassett, hunted ducks at Bachman Lake in Dallas while working for the Dallas Morning News. Margaret was born 14 March 1848. She was the daughter of Pinckney Jarvis and Catherine "Kitty Ann" Gassaway. Robert, have you done any research on the Gassaways. I have two in Albemarle Co, VA that witness Thomas Anderson will in 1758. I thought maybe the Jarvis were related to the Nathaniel V. Bowles line in Barren Co. Beaver Dam Church in Edmonson Co is not far from where Nathaniel V. was buried. I pasted a piece below which names Clayton who he married second time and A.B. Gardner who married Emily Bowles daughter of Thomas Bowles and Jemina (Day)Bowles of Hanover Co, Va. Can you believe they named a church after Beaver Dam, Va, where they were from? I can. SIR- Would you be kind enough to give me a few lines of your space on behalf of the lock-keepers and lightermen on the canal. As many of your readers no doubt are well aware, their lives are lonely and monotonous, and, under such circumstances , a supply, however small, of suitable reading material would be a great boon ñ not to speak of the possible influence for good in some cases. There are, I believe, about 27 lock-keepers and 200 lightermen engaged on the canal. If, therefore, any of your readers have any old magazines, journals, or papers to spare, I would gladly arrange to call for them, or if more convenient, they could be left at Mr William Lairdís Corn Market. My father or I would then deliver them to Mr James MíCleave, third lock-keeper, who has kindly consented to distribute and exchange them with the canalmen. Trusting the active sympathy of your readers may be excited on their behalf - -I am sir, yours sincerely. Anna Parker, 17 Elbana Street, Belfast, 28th October 1893. THE LOSS OF THE S.S. HORN HEAD. LIST OF THE CREW. The following is a full list of the crew of the Ulster Steamship Companyís steamer the Horn Head, which has been missing since 20th(?) August last, and which has now been given up for lost:- H.J.Scott, master, Belfast; William Duff, first mate, 32 Meadow Street, Belfast; H.C.Semple, second mate, Liverpool; William Carroll, carpenter, 33 Holywood Street, Belfast. David Aicken, steward, Hillchester Street, Belfast (late of Larne); Joseph Harris, messroom stewart, Liverpool; Alex Whitford, cook, 11 Valentine Street, Belfast; Bernard Corne, A.B.,Ardglas, County Down; Robert W. MíNally, A.B., Liverpool; Philip Griffen, A.B. 6MíTier Street, Belfast; Wm. MíVeigh, A.B., Whiteabbey; Frederick Lochyer, A.B. London; Francis Williams, A.B., Liverpool; Edward Kisack, A.B., Liverpool; Wentworth Churnley, A.B., Bolton; John Halpin, A.B., Liverpool; Robert Wilson, chief engineer, 44 Percy Street, Belfast; John Osborne, second engineer, 28 Duncairn Gardens; James Purdon, third engineer, 23 Cliftonville Avenue, Belfast; James Colwelll, donkeyman, Liverpool; Henry Biddlecombe, fireman; Chas. MíCormick, fireman, Larne; Patrick MíVoy, fireman, Liverpool; John Connolly, firema! n, Monaghan; Thomas Brown, fireman, Liverpool. Two firemen, James Rowan and Hugh Carthy, both of Liverpool, deserted from the ship at Baltimore, and their places were filled by D. Ryan and A. Allen, whose addresses are not known. The Horn Head was built in Belfast in 1884, by Messrs. Harland & Wolff to the order of the Ulster Steamship Company Limited (Managers, Messrs. G Heyn & Sons). Her dimensions were, - Length, 321 ft. 8in.; breadth, 37ft. 3in.; depth, 25ft.; with a gross tonnage of 2,386(?) tons and 1,559 tons net. She was fitted with compound engines, having a stroke of 45in. The steamer was first in command of Captain Thompson, who sailed her for six years, and, after his promotion to a larger ship, Captain Scott succeeded him in the command. The Horn Head was looked upon by the owners as about the best and safest vessel of their fleet, and they still hold to the opinions expressed by them at the first, which were that something must have gone wrong with her steeri! ng gear; she may have broken her shaft, or lost her propeller; or she may have been sunk by coming in contact with one of the numerous derelicts floating about the Atlantic. Captain Scott, who was an experienced officer, has been in the companyís service for twelve or thirteen years, first entering it as second officer. His first command was on the Black Head, and he was afterwards promoted to the Horn Head in succession to Captain Thompson. Captain Thompson, writing to Messrs. Heyn, managing owners, with reference to the missing ship, pays a high tribute to the capabilities of Captain Scott as master mariner, and gives it as his opinion that the Horn Head must have run against one of the floating derelicts and been lost. He says that there are about 400 of these dangerous obstacles floating about in the Atlantic in the way of passing vessels, and so great has the danger become from them that the United States Government have commissioned a cruiser specially to look out for these! floating wrecks and destroy them. The owners are also of this opinion, as they believe if she had foundered in a storm some wreckage would have been found. I have no connection nor further information on this fellow. Linne http://www.rootsweb.com/~ildewitt/id488.htm#hughes_bowles HUGHES BOWLES. (Volume 1, Page 347) Hughes Bowles, a well-known citizen of Hallsville, is the possessor of a good property which now enables him to spend his years in the pleasurable enjoyment of his accumulations. The record of this life, previous to 1900, is that of an active, enterprising, methodical and sagacious business man, who bent his energies to the honorable acquirement of a comfortable competence for himself and family. Mr. Bowles is one of DeWitt county's native sons, his birth having occurred in Tunbridge township, December 5, 1842. His father, Henry Bowles, was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, July 10, 1818, and was a son of Hughes Bowles, a farmer of that county, who, in the twenties, before the winter of the deep snow, brought his family to DeWitt county, Illinois, being one of the first to locate here. He took up a large amount of government land and became owner of several hundred acres. The father of our subject was reared in this county and married Miss Cassie Hall, who was also born in Kentucky and was quite young when she came to this state. Her mother, Mary Hall, was another of the pioneers of DeWitt county. Henry Bowles followed farming, and plowed much of his land with a team consisting of one horse and an ox. He died September 20, 1845, at the age of twenty-eight years, and his wife died March 25, 1851, at the age of twenty-five. She was born April 7, 1826. After the death of his mother our subject made his home with his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Hall, and other relatives until he was grown, and received a good common school education. He then worked by the month as a farm hand for a few years, but after his marriage bought a farm of one hundred and twenty acres near Farmer City, but in McLean county, and at once commenced to break the virgin soil and improve the place by the erection of fences and good and substantial buildings. After residing there for twenty-one years he sold the place and bought residence property in Hallsville and a farm in Tunbridge township, DeWitt county. He rented his farm, and while making his home in the village he operated a farm nearer that place for six years. He then removed to Hallsville and successfully engaged in farming for a few years. He then retired from active labor and returned to Hallsville in February 1900. He is still the owner of a good farm of one hundred and fifty-seven acres of land near Kenney, but is now living a retired life. In Barnett township, this county, Mr. Bowles was married, February 5, 1868, to Miss Rachel Bartley, who was born in Madison county, Ohio, but during infancy was brought to DeWitt county, Illinois, where she was reared. Her father, John Bartley, was a native of Pennsylvania, and in early life went to Ohio, where he married Miss Nancy McClimans, a native of that state. Six children blessed the union of Mr. and Mrs. Bowles, namely: Myrtle C., now the wife of Ed P. Hildreth, a merchant of Kenney; Lora L., wife of Skillman Hunter, ticket agent and telegraph operator at Hallsville; Mont B., who is married and engaged in farming on his father's place; Laverne and Edna, both at home; and an infant, deceased. Originally Mr. Bowles was a Democrat in politics, and cast his first presidential vote for General George B. McClellan in 1864, but of later years he has been identified with the Prohibition party. He has served on the school board, but has never cared for public office. Religiously he and his wife are members of the Christian church at Hallsville, and as a public-spirited and progressive man he gives a liberal support to all measures calculated to advance the moral, educational and material welfare of the community in which he resides. Socially he is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

I'm interested in find out who these Bowe women are in Hanover Co, VA. We know Nathaniel Bowe died 1785, so Catherine or Sarah Bowe are probably not his wife. Henry Bowe was living in 1764, so one of these two is probably his wife. I don't know if Frances is a male or female, if female could be his wife. They could have died, married, or moved. Can anybody help? Leathel, You've got the families mixed up. William Boles (b: abt 1770 in Stokes co., NC; d: May 1849 in Surry co., NC; md: (1) 14 Dec 1798 in Stokes co., NC, Bethsy Redock (Reddick) d: before 1820 in NC; md: (2) 1 Feb 1822 in Surry co., NC, Aeley Rainwaters b: 1780? in NC; d: aft. 1860. He was the son of John Boles and the grandson of William Bools/Boles who settled in what became Stokes co., NC. There does seem to be a close relation ship between the sons of John Boles and the Jarvis family as they appear in several documents. I believe the William Bowles who married Sally Stanly is actually William Boyles, part of a family living in Surry co. often confused with the William Boles family of Neatman Creek before Stokes county split off from Surry co. Dear Leathel- Here is another Bowles-Jarvis marriage. My Greatgrandfather was John Brown Bowles, son of Thomas T. Bowles and Mary M. "Polly" Brown, married Margaret Ellen Jarvis. They were married 20 November 1864. Margaret was born 14 March 1848. She was the daughter of Pinckney Jarvis and Catherine "Kitty Ann" Gassaway. Anyone have any additional information on the Margaret Jarvis that married William Franklin 23 September 1849. Susan, Nathaniel Bowe died 1785 and his eldest son William was the ad'm. Nathaniel had land on the road from Hanover Court House to Richmond (Ashcake road?), Sam Cross was the overseer of his land. Nathaniel had three sons William d.1816, John d.1809. and Capt. Nathaniel d.1829. My guess is that since William was his eldest son, that William was his fathers name? In John's will 1809 it don't mention a wife or children, but more than likely he had a wife and son, who he did not have to mention? Col. Thomas Tinsley was probably related to his grandmother Deborah (Tinsley) Bowles. There was a couple things of interest in William's will, but I think this is more interesting," 1808, David Oliver, WILLIAM BOWE, and Benjamin Timberlake appraised estate of Benj. Toler". In Capt.Nathaniel Bowe will 1829 there are a lot of interesting things, again I found this "Item. I give and devise one other equal part of my estate real & personal to my daughter POLLY CROSS wife if Oliver T, Cross to her and her heirs forever". Below you will find the will of Thomas Bowles Jr, 1817, brother to Peter Bowles. Thomas and Jemina lived on Taylors creek.Thomas had a increase in acres of land in 1785, the same year Nathaniel died, did he have a fourth son? Leathel, BOWE, JOHN. "Hanover, 20th Aug 1809. Cap. John W Ellis. Dr. Sir. I am about starting down the Country and never having made a will & should anything happen to prevent my making one, my wish and desire is that William, the son of Nancy Tinsley shall be entitled to fifty Virginia bank shares standing in my name on the books of the bank. The first divident arising from the said fifty share I wish given to Nancy tensely, the next four dividends I wish my adm. to lay out in purchases, schooling, clothing & having emancipated a mulatto girl named Mahla now the property of Col. Thomas Tinsley. 8 June 1817 THOMAS BOWLES, JR. "I, THOMAS BOWLES DO MAKE THIS MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT: To wit-My first request is that all my just and lawful debts be paid. The Balance of my estate I give in trust to my two sisters MARY AND CHRISCHANIA so that they may receive the yearly profits thereof. To them and their heirs forever. But if either shall die without lawful issue, in that case my intention is that all shal go to the survivor. In the event of both's dying without lawful issue my intention is that my estate shall go to my brothers DAVY, ISAAC, AND IRAY and my half sister EMELIA equally in the manner above directed. My will and desire further is that if either shall have lawful issue in that case she or he shall have her or his part free from trust in the manner first above written. John Jones and Oliver t. Cross I leave my executors." 1782, Thomas and Jerminah of Taylor Creek, paid taxes on 211 acres. 1785 increased to 510 acres.

Hi Leathel, The info you sent is very interesting. I await "the rest of the story". In the meantime, I found some info I am not sure you have seen. It is about the Bowles family in Henrico, Goochland, and Cumberland Counties and the elusive Gideon Bowles. It also addresses some interesting connections with the Bowles/Knight connections and their connections in Antigua and Barbados. The web site is: _http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~amcolan/Bowles/who_was_gideon_bowles.html_ (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~amcolan/Bowles/who_was_gideon_bowles.html) Do you have any into on the connection between the Boles/Bowles family and the Richards family from Montgomery Co., VA?
