MAHLON1 HALL was born 1777 in VA, and died Bef. 1860 in DeWitt County, IL b. Hall Cemetery. He married (1) BETSY WALKER February 19, 1795 in Bourbon County, KY. He married (2) CASSANDRA PARKER December 20, 1798 in Bourbon County, KY. He married (3) HANNAH REED April 13, 1820 in Bourbon County, Kentucky, daughter of JONATHAN REED and SUSANNAH REED. Notes for MAHLON HALL: The first marriage rite solemnized in the township was in the spring of 1832, by Hugh Bowles, a pioneer and Christian minister. The contracting parties were McCarty Hildredth and Eliza Hall. They were married in the log house of the bride's father, Mahlon Hall. The first born was Elisha Butler, junior, in the fall of 1830. He was the son of Elisha Butler, senior, the first settler. Elisha the younger, is yet living and is in Leadville, Colorado. The first death occurred in 1830, the deceased being George Bruner one of the pioneers who was then living in section 35. He had a family, one of whom, Jacob, now resides in the county. The oldest place of interment is situated in section thirty-three, and was reserved for a private place of burial by Mahlon Hall in 1833. It was at this time that triplets were born to the first married couple, McCarty Hildredth and his wife Eliza. The children were all born alive, but lived only & few hours. These were the first interred in this buri! al grou nd. There are several private places of burial in the township, but none that could be termed public cemeteries. The first post-office was established in 1833, at the residence of Mahlon Hall, he being the postmaster. At that time, for the transmission of a letter 400 miles it cost twenty-five cents. No such thing was then known as an envelope. The letter was merely folded and stuck together with a wafer. HALL and daughter of Justus and Martha ALLEN was born in Ohio December 8, 1840. The family came to Vermillion county, Illinois and settled near the present village of Homer when she was about twelve years of age. In her twentieth year she was married to Andrew J. HAYES. A daughter by this marriage died at the age of eighteen. Some years after he death of Mr. HAYES she was united in marriage to Amos C. HALL, June 30, 1887. The established a good home in Hallsville in 1888 and resided there about three years. The lived in St. Louis four years, a year in Sedalla, in Parsons, Kansas two different times returning to Hallsville now and then, until their return last May with the intention of finishing their pilgrimage among their old time friends and neighbors. Her strength had been on the decline for several years. Her final sickness however was only a weeks duration. She departed this life Friday, January 24, at the age of 67 years, 1 mon! th and 21 days. One brother Abraham ALLEN of Hallsville and one sister, Mrs. Laura MCLAUGHLIN of Petomac, Illinois, survive her. She confessed to Saylor and was baptized by T.T. The memorial sermon was preached at her request by T.T. HOLTON of Bloomington from the text, "Show us the Father and it Sufficeth." The choir of the Christian church sang most tenderly several beautiful and consoling songs There were present a great number of relatives and friends of the family and there was much sympathy shown to Mr. HALL who in his old age is left wifeless. At the close of the services the body was interred in the McClimman's cemetery. 6. HENRY H.2 HALL (MAHLON1) was born February 09, 1809 in KY, and died May 25, 1882 in Burt County, NE. OH Hannah Koons wf age 9 b. IL Ella Barnett wf age 4 b. IL >From DeWitt County History 1882 Alexander Barnett is the oldest pioneer citizen of Clintonia. He is a native of Bourbon county, Kentucky, and came to the county in the fall of 1831. He first stopped in wbat was known as the Hall and Bowles settlement, Barnett township. He remained there but a short time, when he returned to his native State.. The next year, 1832, he came back to this county, where he has remained a citizen ever since. In the fall of 1834, he entered the land for his present farm in the extreme western part of Clintonia township. At that time Mr. Barnett, Josiah Clifton and Samuel Curtright were the only citizens. In the same year Mr. Barnett married Miss Elizabeth Hall, and early the following spring they went to house-keeping in a pole cabin previously built by Mr. Barnett on his premises in Section 30. His cabin was euphoniously called the " House that Jack built," from the fact that a man by the name of Jack Bruner superintended the construction of it. It was a rude affair, filled in wi! th chin kings, but not daubed up with mud as were some of the most aristocratic of those times. Soon after moving in a heavy snow storm prevailed, Mr. Barnett was away from home, and when he returned be found his wife sitting, desolate and alone, in the middle of the room, muffled up in a cloak, and the floor covered with snow. He made a rousing fire, swept out the snow, stuffed up the cracks with rags the best he could, and for a time they were comparatively comfortable. The next morning. Mr. Barnett was obliged to wade through several inches of snow before he could reach his clothes to dress. Many years have passed, and Mr. Barnett is now one of the prominent farmers and representative citizens of DeWitt county. He has been a very active man all his, life, and although gray haired, and somewhat bent with age, he is yet active and capable of more endurance than many of the rising generation. He was elected the first surveyor after the county was organized in 1839, served in the off! ice for twenty successive years, and is now the present incumbent. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: [email protected] From: "Lee Paltridge" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [B&D] BOWLES William, Keynsham, SOM, 1832 Thanks Josephine for this extra snippet. >>William BOWLES was entitled to vote in the 1832 Somerset election in Keynsham. His abode was Keynsham and his qualification to vote was freehold land at Hempshord, though I don't know where that was. << I have looked on the old maps but cannot find a Hempshord either, or a name anything like it in the vicinity. I wondered if it might really have been Kempsford, which is the name of a town in the Cotswolds, about 50km north-east from Keynsham, which might have been used here as a local farm name. Given the strange ways that both the capitals H and K were written, it seems quite possible. William BOWLES was on the 1851 census as a farmer of 14 acres, which is not a very large farm. In 1851 and 1861, he lived in West End in Keynsham, so the farm was probably around that general area. In March 2007, in answering a question on B&S from a new CANTLE lister, Chris Hollins, I put in my two penn'orth about the CANTLE basket makers*, and the many references to the name in Keynsham parish and Baptist registers, but said I had no connection to the CANTLE family myself. Wrong! William BOWLES, after the death his wife Elizabeth DERRICK in 1846, lived with the family of farmer John CANTLE, and his relationship is described as 'Uncle'. I mentioned in this week's query that Thomas DERRICK snr and his wife Elizabeth FRANKHAM had four children - Elizabeth 1777 (whose marriage to William BOWLES you found for me), Thomas 1779, John 1782, and my 3xgm Hannah 1784. John DERRICK married Ann LEWIS at St Augustine in 1805, and I have now found that their daughter Elizabeth b 1806 married John CANTLE - a very late marriage - both in their 40s. Thus William BOWLES was uncle by marriage of Elizabeth DERRICK CANTLE - who was therefore my first cousin 4 times removed! (* you added lots of wonderful stuff about osier cutting) I'll keep my eye out for this Hempshord/Kempsford name - so thank you again. Lee =======================================================
