As far as I can tell it is correct. As I am a direct descendant of Jesse Sr. through Jesse Jr to Augustine to Charles and beyond. I will endeavor to dig out my files and check it for you. Thanks Bill. I did have Anderson and Joseph but not dates. I don't have a clue how this mix up in families could have happened. LindaC by the way I apologize to all for the involuntary info about my server. It goes with my cheap but reliable dial up these days so I read all mail and not posting. ----- Original Message ----- From: adamsfamily6 To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, March 08, 2008 8:52 PM Subject: Re: [BOWLES] RE children list of Jesse Bowles,Sr. and Hannah Perkins ? With his permission to forward his posting, Dr. Riddick added the following informative note. If you find that you connect to his lines, please send the Bowles list your discoveries, also. Linne I mentioned that my geneaologic material was in storage and that I wrote the note without going to source material. I did check the book written by Ruth Armstrong Ross in 1988 and find that Mr Bowles was Edward Thomas Bowles, not Edwin. In her book Ruth recounts that in 1972 Mr Bowles came to the annual Riddick Family reunion, held that year in Memphis TN. I was not in attendance that year and did not meet him. Mr. Bowles, a resident of Norfolk VA was following geneaologic leads and tracing the descendents of Willis J. Riddick born 1795 and Priscilla Hinton, born 1801, both of Gates County NC. Two of the sons of Willis & Priscilla, Jobe Riddick, Born 1823 and Wiley, born 1829, had left Gates Co in the 1840s for Yalobusha County MS, where a number of Gates County emigrees lived, several of whom were related to Jobe and Wiley. We have no record of Wiley, but have a full account of Jobe, from whom my branch of the family descends. He married a cousin, Caroline Augusta Ballard, whose parents had moved to Yalobusha in the 1820s. At any rate, Mr Bowles visited Coffeeville Miss in search of the Riddicks, only to find that they were all in Memphis that weekend for a family reunion. He travelled the 90 miles or so to Memphis and met his Mississippi relatives. Subsequent correspondence with Ruth Armstrong Ross provided her with the data on those members of the Riddick family who remained in North Carolina. Through this listing, I was able to correspond with and then meet a distant cousin, Floyd Riddick, Parliamentarian of the US Senate and author of several books on Senate Rules and Parliamentary Procedure, while I was in Washington DC on business. As to Edward Thomas Bowles, he was born Mar 30 1919 in Hertford County NC, had 4 marriages, lived in Norfolk VA and died in 1985. His parents were John Edward Bowles born 1885 and Cora Thomas Riddick, born 1889, both of Hertford County NC. Cora was the daughter of Lemuel Bembury Riddick 1864-1913, a lifelong resident of Gates County NC, Lemuel B. Riddick was the son of Mills Lynwood Riddick of Gates County NC, 1828-1898. Mills Lynwood was the brotrher of Jobe and Wiley Riddick. Willis J Riddick was the son of Col Robert Riddick of Gates County. I have an extensive database entitled The Riddick, Alston, Ballard and Kelly Families on RootsWeb. It can be accessed by entering any of the names listed here, locating my entry on that individual, then tracing up or down to find ancestors or descendents. Hope this is of interest to you. Frank A. Author: DrFrankRiddick Surnames: Riddick, Holowell, Bowles, Cross, Ross Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.riddick/328.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Chris- After Hurricane Katrina we moved to a high rise condo and all my source materials on geneaology are in storage. As best as I can remember, my listing of Sarah (Sally) Riddick as Christopher Riddick's wife comes from my cousin Ruth Armstrong Ross, who wrote 1986 a book on our branch of the Riddicks, from her correspondence in the 1950s qnd 60s with Edwin Bowles of Gates County NC who was a descendent of the Riddicks who stayed in NC rather than emigrating to Mississippi as did my forebears or to Louisiana, as did yours. one of them or perhaps both cite materials collected and collated in the 1930s and 1940s bu one William T. Cross, long time Registrar of Gates County NC and also a Riddick descendent. The one thing not in storage is my copy of Pioneers of the South published in the 1990s by June Runyan Riddick of Little Rock Arkansas, whose data generally agrees with mine and augments it considerable. June lists Sarah Hollowell as Christopher Riddick's first wife and ! the mother of a daughter, Mary, she lists Sarah Riddick, daughter of James Riddick, as Christopher Riddick's second wife and the mother of sons William Wright, Mills, Henry (from whom I am descended) and Lemuel (grandfather of Lamartine Riddick, who is your ancestor). My data show that Sarah Riddick was the daughter of Capt Joseph Riddick rather than his brother James Riddick. Whichever is correct and I see no way to find out after nearly 300 years, Sarah was the granddaughter of Lemuel Riddick of Nansemond County Virginia and a man of local importance in Colonial Virginia. The Pleasant Hill Church Cemetery is a lovely place (or it was when we visited it in 1989) where you will find Jabel and Nancy's memorial stone and several other Bowles' as well as one of his daughters, Frances (wife of Job Kessell). Jeptha Mason also has a stone there. No doubt others in the cemetery will be of interest as well. And, if you haven't already seen it, find the book "Jackson County, West Virginia, Past and Present" done in 1990 by the Jackson County Historical Society. It is great. I normally make my posts between 7-8 every morning and sometimes the posts don't show up until late afternoon or early evening. I'm not sure why but I try to check and be sure they are eventully getting to you! Sandi The Daily Advocate Victoria, Texas Aug. 26, 1910 Outbreak of Scabies Glasgow, Ky., Aug. 24 -- It was learned here today that the sheep in Barren and adjoining counties are afflicted with scabies, and not only a small portion, but over 50 per cent are afflicted with the disease. The matter was telegraphed to Commissioner of Agriculture M.C. Rankin, who at onece appointed Dr. E.C. Reaves, of Glasgow, Livestock Inspector for Barren County, and other inspectors are to be appointed in the various counties where the disease is spreading. On September 1 a quarantine will be placed on all the sheep in this county and everything will be done to stamp out the disease, which is not only destroying the flocks, but is claimed to be responsible for the shortage of wool during the past year. ======================== Fort Wayne (INdiana) Journal-Gazette Dec. 27, 1910 Children Locked in Home and Three Burn to Death Glasgow, Ky., -- Dec. 26 -- On returning home from an errand late this afternoon, Mrs. Robert Boles, of Wisdom, in this county, was horrified to find her home in ashes and in one corner of the ruins, the charred bones of her three children aged five, three and one years. How the fire started is a mystery. When Mrs. Boles left home she carefully covered the fire, taking every possible precaution to prevent the children from getting into mischief and locked the doors. It was evident that the children had tried to escape, but were trapped and died in each other's arms. ================================= SCKY Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=south-central-kentucky Barren Co Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=kybarren Sandi's Puzzlers: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/gorin/puz.html =====================================================================

V R SHELTON of Metcalfe Co elected Sgt-at-arms of the Senate; Walter FLIPPIN of Monroe Co elected Doorkeeper of the House; R E McCANDLESS of Metcalfe Co elected Assistant Cloak-room Keeper and Eugene PAGE of Edmonton - no position shown. Thomas P DICKINSON became a partner in TRIGG's Bank on the first of the month. Everybody in Barren Co knows him; his business life has been banking; has no superior as a bank officer. His friends congratulate him. The attention of the authorities is called to the condition of the gutters around the court-house yard, which, we understand, are to be allowed to remain as they are. By all means something should be done to prevent the water standing in these gutters, as they are not only unsightly, but unhealthy as well. When the work not being done on the court-house yard is completed it will be all the more noticeable. Glasgow ought to have enough pride to see that this nuisance is removed. Bruce DOHONEY, the only son of Judge R B DOHONEY died at his father's residence on Beaver Creek, five miles from town Tuesday morning between 8 and 9 o'clock. At about 8, his mother heard him coughing, but on going to his room a short time afterwards she found him dead; she was the only other person at the house when he died. His death was sudden but not unexpected; he had been suffering several years with hypertrophy of the heart; 31 years of age; a young man of splendid attainments, solid worth and tried honor. He will be greatly missed by his associates in business and social circles. Burial took place yesterday at 3 pm in the family burying ground at Edmonton.
