The surname "Boles" was picked up on the Personalized Mailing List yesterday at this URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.organizations.orvf/2087/mb.ashx I went to that site to see who posted it and what it said, and unfortunately the poster wants to remain anonymous so I can't send her an invitation to join us on the Bowles list. Here's what she had to say: I am looking to trade information with any descendants of the Helms, Good, Massena, or Hartman families of Ohio, West Virginia, or Pennsylvania. The Massena family's daughter Ella married Samuel Helms. I have traced Ella's mother, Barbara Cramer, but cannot find ancestors of her father Samuel Massena. He was born in PA and fought for WV in the Civil War. I cannot find his date or location of death. Samuel Helms' grandfather, Benonan Helms, is also a dead end. Samuel Helms' mother is Elizabeth Boles. I am attempting to find her parents and siblings. Ella and Samuel Helms' daughter Birdie/Bertha Helms married Louis Good. I cannot find any ancestors of Louis Good. He went by the nicknames "Gramps" and "Rolling Red." It is said that he was a hobo on the train system. He died in California. Louis and Birdie Good's daughter Dollie married Wilbur Hartman. Wilbur is the son of Reuben Hartman and Maggie E. I have no information regarding Maggie and would like to find her maiden name. Reuben is the son of Joseph Hartman and Luanna Smith. I would like to trace the Hartman and Smith families further. Please respond with any information, particularly regarding the Massena family. Other spellings include Mazena, Mozzena, Maseana, Mezziner, etc. It is rumored that the Massena family descended from the French General Andre Massena, however I cannot find a connection. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information linking my Elizabeth Boles to Jesse Bowles and Chloe Parker is NOT correct. Jesse Bowles and Chloe Parker had a daughter named Elizabeth, however she died at the age of approximately two. Unfortunately, I had to delete this entire line from my tree and start over from scratch. Please feel free to forward the information to the Bowles list, however I am not certain that we are affiliated. I believe Elizabeth's father may have been her next door neighbor in the 1850's, John Boles, and if so, he came from Ireland. I cannot prove this link. I do have access to Ancestry.com and have exhausted all of the resources there. Thank you for the information that you provided, however I believe I have most of this information attached to my tree already. The Helms line ends with Benonan Helms and I have yet to find anyone who has been able to locate his parents. I have not been able to confirm the Hartman line past Joseph Hartman. The lines also end with Samuel Massena and Louis Good. These are the lines that I am trying to find as I cannot find any records of their parents. I have already traced the wives' families, with the exception of Elizabeth Boles. I have a possible link for Joseph Hartman, but I am not certain that it is correct. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If anyone sees any connection to these families you can reach the poster at the above URL. And do please post what you see here, so that your information can go into the Bowles list archives for others to find in the future. Yours, Linne

Interesting, Leathel, YORK COUNTY, VA. was originally named Charles River, and was one of the eight shires formed in 1634. NEW KENT COUNTY was probably named for the English county Kent. Colonel William Claiborne, a native of Kent, was a prominent resident of the Virginia county at the time of its formation. New Kent County was formed from York about 1654. Its area is 221 square miles, and its county seat is New Kent. CLAIBORNE, or CLAYBORNE, William, colonist, known as "The Evil Genius of Maryland," born in Westmoreland, England, about 1589; died in Virginia about 1676. He was a younger son of a distinguished Westmoreland family, and in 1621 was appointed surveyor of the plantations of Virginia, under the London company. He arrived at Jamestown in the ship " George," with Sir Francis Wyatt and other members of the new council, in October, 1621, and, escaping the massacre of 22 March, settled at "James City." He acquired considerable landed estates, amounting, according to the "Land Register of Virginia," to 45,000 acres. On 24 March, 1625, he was commissioned by Charles I. as member of the council, and "to be our Secretary of State for the said Collony and Plantation of Virginia." William Claiborne, a member of the Virginia council, established a trading post on Kent Island just before King Charles I granted the colony of Maryland to Lord Baltimore. Kent Island was the first English settlement in Maryland. Claiborne was born in Kent, England, in 1600's and came to the colonies in 1621. It was from Brancepeth in November 1569 that the Earls of Westmoreland and Northumberland launched their attack on Barnard Castle which was being held for Queen Elizabeth by Sir George Bowles. The Earls had even entered into negotiations with the Spanish Ambassador in an attempt to secure assistance from Philip II; the rebels garrisoned the port of Hartlepool. The rebellion collapsed after the earls were defeated near Durham on the 15 December 1569. Dorothy Mallory married the celebrated Sir George Bowes, of Streatlam in the county of Durham, who was so vigorously withstood the Earls of Northumberland and Westmoreland in the rebellion of 1569. By her, he had Sir William Bowes, ambassador to Scotland and treasure of Berwick.

Many of these same family members are from these same settlements in Kentucky, before Missouri became a state. It was known as the Louisiana Territory, settled by the Maryland Catholics about 1800=1805. The land grants were directly from Spain through the territorial Lt. Governor. The families listed are as follows: I know this book covers many of these same family descendants. It has information on many of the Kentucky families. Page 2 of the book lists Basil Hayden as the leader of the group in the migration to Kentucky per Ben Webb's book, "CENTENARY OF CATHOLICITY IN KENTUCKY", (1888). The other members of the group are listed as Phillip Lee, William Bald, Bernard Cissell, Charles Payne, William Brewer, Leonard Johnson, Henry McAtee, Joseph Clark, Stephen Elliot, James Mollihorne, Henry Norris, Ignatius Cissell, Ignatius Byrne, Randal Hagan, John Bowles, Ignatius Hagan, Jeremiah Brown, Robert Cissell, Ignatius Bowles, Hezekiah Luckett, Stanislaus Melton, Thomas Bowin, John Baptist Dant, Philip Miles, Harry Hill, John Hutchins, Isaac Thawles, John Spalding, William Mahony, Henry Lucas, William Bowles, James Queen, Bernard Nally, James Stevens, Ignatius French, Washington Boone, Francis Bryan, Jeremiah Wathen, Thomas Mudd, Raphael R. Mudd, Walter Burch, Philip Mattingly, Joseph Spal! ding, James Dant, Joseph Dant, Urban Speaks, Joseph Edelen, Joseph Howe, Joseph Mills, Harry Mills, Monica Hagan, Rodolphus Norris and Francis Peak. It also states on page 2, that some of these same individuals later joined in the immigration to Missouri. Timothy O'Rourke also states that the fact that more Missouri pioneers are not listed may be due to the fact that Webb was writing some eighty years after the Missouri contingent had left Kentucky. My line, Frances Drury, who married Joseph Tucker, descends from John Drury and Susannah Hayden, from Saint Mary's county, Maryland. John Drury's three daughters migrated west from Maryland, into Kentucky and on into Illinois and Perry county Missouri. I hope some of this info helps you. Son of the late Gregory and Elizabeth Bowles. Loving and devoted father of Maureen Vanravens and her husband Ed and Darryl Bowles and his wife Luisa. He will be sadly missed by his siblings Norma and her husband Bob and by his brother David and his friend Nancy, also by his nieces Donna and Tracy and their families.
