    3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: [email protected] From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Polly Chamberlin This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jparker194 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.chamberlin/443.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: After checking my Chamberlain records here, and available data online in Ancestry.com (several listings for this couple and their children there), LDS-IGI records, and so forth, I have come up with the same result as you have reported - Polly's parents remain unknown. I do see that the 1820 & 1830 census lists an Ithamar Chamberlain, Jr. who lived in Dummerston, Windham Co., VT, who might be related. His genealogy is listed in my records here - he was born 6 Jul 1783, Chesterfield, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire, and died there in Dummerston, 13 Jun 1859. He had a sister named Polly who was born c1782, but she married Lemuel Bowles, so I presume that your Polly probably isn't a sibling in this family, though, judging by her age, she definitely could be. A sister was Anna Chamberlain, who married Samuel Dutton of Dummerston, 19 Jun 1810, and a brother was Benjamin, who married Resina Amsden in 1807 in Dummerston, so these are other Dummerston connections for this particular ! family. Ithamar Jr. was 1 of 7 known children of Ithamar(4) Chamberlain Sr. and his wife Hepsabah Farr, with his ancestry listed as Benjamin(3), Joseph(2), Richard(1). Since you do know Polly's birth and marriage dates, local & state vital records should be checked, if you have not already done so. Also for your information, my records show that data for this family appeared in a GenForum Chamberlain posting, dated 29 Jul 2001, by Maggie Miller Laurenz [Email: [email protected] ]. So, you may wish to attempt to contact her to determine whether she has learned more by this time. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail. 3. Leathel- I wasn't able to find anything at the Kentucky website indicating the warrants were issued to Benjamin Bowles in 1779. Do you have other sources for this? I think in the survey of 1797 the statements that read for example "assignee of G. Hicks" mean that Benjamin Bowles and now his heirs were the assignees of the original warrant owner (in this case G. Hicks). My understanding is an assignee is the person receiving the warrant from the original owner (assignor). There is a very good description for "assignee" in the FAQ at the website. It says to think of the warrant as a check that is given to an endorsee (assignee) once the endorser (assignor) signs it over to a new person. When you wrote "It looks like the owners of the warrants got their warrants back", are you referring to the survey or some other source? Should we continue our exchange on this subject off the list? I'm not sure if this discussion is of interest to others. Even though I'm not sure of this Benjamin Bowls connection to my ancestor, I think it is interesting to study the documents and try to understand what happened. 3. Thank you, Leathel and Sue, for guiding us through the thickets of the website and documents. I know that there have been a small group doing their best to see how these surnames and families connect, but they may be busy with Mother's Day festivities. This group and I think that the Benjamin Bowles in my line and the Benjamin Bowles you see below are related---we just don't know how. Since my Benjamin was born in 1785, I doubt that he was the soldier mentioned below. Here's something that I posted 7 years ago. I bring it out again, as we're always getting new members who might not have seen it. Can anyone tell us more information about the surnames below and how they connect to a Bowles? You may have information that we don't know about. Linne P.S.: Old-timers know that when you see that broken double line in any of my postings, unless I tell you otherwise, I won't have any more information about the posting. I'm just forwarding items that get sent to me. ========================================= I looked back in my notes on Benjamin Bowles and found that Vickie Miller did this lookup for me, which I posted to the Bowles list on 9 May 2001: Match: Bowles Source: [email protected] From: [email protected] Vickie Miller Subject: [WIGTON-WALKER] John Walker -Augusta Co and others Virginia's Colonial Soldiers by Lloyd D. 3. Linne, don't know who Lucy Ann Bowles is, but she was much younger than Robert Pickett. My grandfather Jonathan Lawson married first Robert Pickett's sister Georgia Ann Pickett. Robert Pickett married first Jonathan Lawson sister Cordelia Lawson. Robert Pickett was born 1855 and Lucy Ann Bowles was born 1889. 3. For helpful answers to questions relating to patents, etc. in Kentucky, at the same website look for "Frequently Answered Questions" by going to "Military Reg. and Land Records", then "West of TN River Military Patents" and then you will see FAQ. Not easy to find but excellent source for detailed explanations regarding land subjects. 3. Finding things at this website is a little tricky. To see the original "Survey for the Heirs of Benjamin Bowles" which includes owners (Wood, Hicks, Walker, Winn, Anderson, Watkins, and Hughes) of the warrants for Bowls' 2000 acres in Kentucky : At the website, choose "Patent Series", then "VA and Old Kentucky Patent Series", click on "Search", choose Old Kentucky Patent Series, sort by : Patent, and finally Scan the list for OK 2522. The first image in the group is the survey. The surveyor, John Payne, states " I do hereby certify that the warrants on which this survey was executed has never been in my possession." The website's general information about Wills states that "Occasionally patent applicants died before receiving their grant conveying land title. Heirs would submit a will (or a copy of a Will) to the Land Office to establish their claim to the unfinished patent. If accepted, the Grant would be issued "to the Heirs of..."
