Does anyone know who the Robert Ford mentioned is? There was a Robert Ford who was the Clarke for the 1607 Jamestown Councell. and mentioned several times by Captain John Smith in his Works. No one seems to know what happened to him after he left Jamestown. Wondering if he might have ended up in Saco ME. Perhaps he was on the mapping venture with Smith. Thanks for input, James! It appears to have been built in the 2nd half of the 18th century. Today, the crossroads where it stood is being encroached by development. Hanover County recently received a grant to conduct an archaelogical study of the site. It was pivotal in it's relation to the road system as it was built wherre the Mountain Road crosses the Stage Road to points North and South. A description of the building from an insurance policy dated April 29, 1801 reads as follows: "The wooden tavern was 68 ft. long and 18 ft. wide, one-storey, brick basement, with stable and carriage house. I an letter dated 1929, Miss Effie Bowles Kelly describes it as having a brick English basement (above ground) and the balance was framed with wood clapboards. The roof was Dutch-style (a gambrel, or barn-style roof). The rooms were very large and the stables were of log construction. Last owned by the Perrin family, it was torn down around 1915. Hope that helps. Let me know if you would like to know more. Karl Harrelson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Not sure if I'm in the right place or not, but I'm searching for my ancestors William Wheeler Thacker, 1877 - 1956, m. Inez Mabel Leach; Jeremiah Thacker, 1840 - 1919, m. Sarah J. Hatten; Daniel Thacker, 1764 - 1870, m. Elizabeth Cyrus; Reuben Thacker, 1740 - 1818; William Thacker, 1690 - 1767, m. Ruth Bowles and all from the Wayne County area, W. Virginia. I believe Ruth Bowles father was William Bowles of Hanover, VA from 1710 - 1784. I don't know who Ruth Bowles' mother was. My line extends into the Utterback's, also. Please help. Sincerely, Rosi
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/cif/index.html Confederate Indigent Families Lists (1863-1865) On November 24, 1863, the Texas Legislature passed a Joint Resolution stating that the government pledged "support and maintenance of [the soldiers'] families during their absence from home." In accordance with this Resolution, an "Act to Support the Families and Dependents of Texas Soldiers" passed on December 15, 1863. The Act set aside $1,000,000 annually to be paid the "families, widows, and dependents of soldiers currently serving in State or Confederate forces, or of soldiers killed or disabled in service." Chief Justices of the counties, on or before March 1 in 1864 and 1865, submitted lists of servicemen and the number of their dependents eligible for relief. The County Clerk administered the money distributed to the county for this purpose. Please note that lists were not compiled in every county; those counties are not represented in the index. The information varies somewhat from county to county. While the number of dependents is always provided, additional information may include some of the following elements: name of the soldier; currently in service; disabled or killed in service; unit; acting head of household. The names may be viewed in an alphabetical listing by surname. Please select the appropriate link below: A - C D - G H - L M - P Q - Z The names may also be viewed in an alphabetical listing within each county. Please select the appropriate link from the following: Anderson - Collin Colorado - Hamilton Harris - Jasper Jefferson - Refugio Robertson - Wood Please be aware that only an index of names appears at this site.
