1. [BOWLES] Carrington Bowles and Thomas Bowles of Maryland
2. Tom LaPorte
3. Charles makes a valuable point in requiring sources to document family history so I should supply mine. I just wanted to comment that my information does not prove that these two were not brothers, just that there is contradictory evidence which leaves the matter unproven either way and personally I'm leaning towards it being very unlikely. John Bowles' Will would be unlikely to ignore a son Thomas in America but it's not impossible. My evidence on the Will is second hand so it could be the authority I'm relying on which removed such a reference rather than the other references which added it. My information is from 'The New Dictionary of National Biography' by Timothy Clayton who did have access to the Will: "John continued at the Black Horse, subsequently no. 13 Cornhill, until he died in 1779. He married Mary Carington and at his death had four surviving children, John, Carington, Mary, and Margaret. His considerable fortune was divided between his children but John's was to be paid in small allowances to avoid: his submitting again to be gulled preyed upon and exhausted by those Monsters in imposture cruelty and wickedness who have already drained him of an handsome ffortune and regardless of the Misery and ruin they bring upon him are ready to assail him entising with diabolic artifice and to bubble him out of any bequest I might bestow. (Will, PROB 11/1056/335)" Also from the same source comes the reference that the Bowles publishing business was in St. Paul's churchyard. John Bowles business had been at Cornhill but Carrington Bowles also inherited his Uncle Thomas' business in St. Paul's churchyard: "Thomas [ii] Bowles retired from business in 1763, and on 8 April 1767 'the great printseller' (GM, 37, 1767, 192) died at his house in Stoke Newington leaving most of his estate to his daughter Bethia Squire and her two sons, William and Thomas. He was succeeded in the shop (now numbered 69 St Paul's Churchyard) by his nephew Carington [see below], as his own son, Thomas, had predeceased him. Thomas [iii] Bowles (1712?-1762), designer and engraver, is said to have been born in 1712 and was trained as an engraver, producing competent botanical plates for Pomona, or, The Fruit-Garden Illustrated (1729) and numerous topographical engravings, some of which were after his own design. His death on 23 December 1762 was recorded four days later in the Public Advertiser; his wife, Margaret, survived him." So this source makes no reference anywhere to a branch of the family in America. But did he have his reasons for neglecting that fact? I really doubt it but I don't know. Another source would have to have done the same. The history of London booksellers at http://bookhistory.blogspot.com/2007/01/london-1775-1800-b.html has the following summaries for John Bowles and his son Carrington: "BOWLES, John, printseller, opposite Stocks Market c1724-39; Mercers' Hall, Cheapside 1728; 13 (Black Horse), Cornhill c1740-1780K. Trading: as John Bowles c1724-54, 1764-79; as John Bowles and son 1754-64. B. 1701, s. of Thomas B.; d. 1779. Free Joiners Co. patrimony 7 May 1723. Assisted by second son Carington 1754-64. Though shop separate from brother Thomas (1712-67), interested in same publs. Succ. by Robert Wilkinson q.v. BM satires 1772-4, 1777; Plomer; Darlington and Howgego; J. C. Smith 218." "BOWLES, Carington, printseller, publisher and map seller, Black Horse, Cornhill 1754-64; 69, next the Chapter House, St. Paul's Churchyard 1764-93. B. 1 Apr. 1724, s. of John B., printseller of Cornhill; d. 20 June 1793, Kensington Gore. App. John Bowles 2 Mar. 1741, free Joiners' Co. 3 Mar. 1752, livery by 1792. Assisted his father in Cornhill 1754-64. Succ. to business of uncle Thomas Bowles (1712-67) in St. Paul's Churchyard on his retirement 1764. Great rival of Sayer. Many prints numbered so prob. publ. cats. Publ. various maps; aquired plates of John Rocque. Only son Henry Carington carried on business as Bowles and Carver. Imprint(s): Kress: 1785: B926. Plomer; Chubb, BM satires, Darlington and Howgego; Musgrave; J. C. Smith" Again no reference to a line in America. So ...... Tom

1. Re: [BOWLES] William Augustus Bowles - Frederick Co MD: Examining theEvidence
2. BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; } Hi everyone, I have been reading all of these Bowles connections all these years and I have to agree with Charles. I have printed one family history and in the process of printing another. I only include information that has reliable sources attached to them. I do extensive research and when there is something in question, I ask others to verify or help me out. That Bowles history by Farquhar has many errors in it. How fortunate we are to have so many records open to us for our research. Most county courthouses are great about letting you search for information. I believe you can use someone elses research as a starting point but always verify each step in their history. In my Hill line, someone started attaching an Abner Hill to my gr-gr-gr grandfather and dna testing proved this to be incorrect but there are still literally 100's of people that won't change their records even though I have definitive proof of Abner not being his father. So do your own research and then see if anyone out there dips into your tree and contact them. Compare notes and sources and work from there. But don't ever just use someone elses research and take it at being the truth without verifying every part of it. Then it becomes a part of your reserch too. And always try to contact the person to make a connection. Just a thought from someone who loves genealogy and my family history. The purpose of this message is to point out the danger of assuming that because something of a genealogical nature was printed a long time ago, that it can be taken for absolute truth. The example I have in mind concerns a man named William Augustus Bowles who was born in Frederick County MD. Mr. Bowles led a very interesting life. At 13 he is said to have run off and joined the British army, and later to have been associated with the Creek Indians. There are numerous sources on the Internet describing his life. Here is a link to one of them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Augustus_Bowles [1] Thomas M. Farquhar, in his History of the Bowles Family, stated, "William Augustus Bowles, the eldest son of Thomas Bowles, was born in Frederick County, Maryland, October 22, 1763." You may view this book at Google Books [http://books.google.com/] [2] by searching for the book's title. While we have grown to suspect that Farquhar invented some relationships in this book, in this case he was probably accurate. However, earlier in the book he stated that this Thomas Bowles was a brother of Carrington Bowles of London, and that is the relationship we want to examine. Also available at Google Books is a book written in England in 1804, titled Public Characters of 1801-1802, and printed for Richard Phillips, No. 71, St. Paul's. This book contains the following quote: *"General Bowles [William Augustus Bowles], the subject of this memoir, is a native of America. His father was an Englishman, who settled on the Trans-Atlantic continent, and acquired considerable wealth there. He was the brother of the well-known Mr. Carrington Bowles, print-seller in St. Paul's Church-yard, and having conceived the idea of meliorating his fortune by emigrating into a new country, he repaired to Maryland in the capacity of a schoolmaster, and resided for many years in Frederic county in that province, where he acquired a plantation, obtained some wealth, and was invested with a public office of considerable trust. "William Augustus Bowles, his eldest son, was born in Frederic county in Maryland, about the year 1764."* Now on the face of it, it seems that this contemporary source supports the conclusion of Mr. Farquhar regarding the relationship of Thomas and Carrington Bowles, and at first I thought it was so. Fortunately for me, and hopefully now for you, I shared my thoughts with our own Tom LaPorte, and here is what he told me: *"I don’t know if I believe that entry. It is a contemporary entry so should be credible but it is in a book published by a competitor (Richard Phillips at #71 St. Paul’s) of the Bowles (also in St. Paul’s Churchyard) right on their same city square in London so that might be a reason for a false reference. Also, the is no brother of Carrington Bowles available to be William Augustus’ father. John Bowles, Carrington’ father, left a very detailed Will. He died in 1779 and was quite specific about his sons including a son John who he wanted disinherited. If he had a son in America he would very, very likely have mentioned him. If Thomas in Maryland was his son and there was no specific mention of him in the Will he could have easily challenged Carrington’s inheritance of the family business from John Sr. That was very common back then and the Bowles would have had good legal council being in the very competitive publishing business. If Thomas had died before the Will was written in 1779 I would buy it better but there is also the reference that Thomas Bowles died only in 1800. "John Bowles Sr. did have one son of unknown name whose death was reported in London in 1762 but then it would be hard fro him to have been the father of William Augustus born in 1764. Maybe if he was really born in 1761 which is possible I suppose but he still wouldn’t have been the Thomas who died in 1800 if we accept him as the ancestor of the line we’re looking into. "So, I have my doubts. You know when some things just seem to fit all the known pieces, it’s easier to accept. This one really doesn’t. It would be great though to finally tie in Chief Bowles. I could easily believe he’s connected to these other Maryland Bowles, just the Carrington Bowles part is harder to accept."* Okay, Tom has raised some very valid points that I had not known before; facts that cast significant doubt on this supposed relationship. My point in sharing this is to encourage each of us to examine carefully what we assume to be true in the light of all the available evidence, and to rely on the expertise of others, where appropriate, to reach our conclusions. At this point, my judgment is that Thomas and Carrington Bowles were probably not brothers, despite the statements by Phillips and by Farquhar. 3. In 2000, a message [a href=" http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SHANNON/2000-05/0957590822] was posted to the Shannon mailing list that gave information about the DAR record for a Virginia Shannon Fendrick of Franklin County PA, who descended from a Thomas Bowles about whom the message said, "Thomas Bowles was a member of the Committee of Correspondence and Observation from Frederick County, Md., where, in 1800, he died. He was born in England." More important for us here, the message gave her line from Thomas Bowles. Briefly, the line went like this ... 1 Thomas Bowles + Eleanor Price 2 Samuel Bowles, b. 1773 + Mary Miller, md. 1795 3 Ann Bowles (1804-75) + William Shannon 4 Daniel Miller Bowles Shannon (1829-1900) + Lena Angle 5 Virginia Shannon (Fendrick) Next, on WorldConnect at Rootsweb [a href=" http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=marykl&id=I131384] we find Samuel Bowles with a son Thomas Bowles, b. 1 Feb 1806. Following that line we find that Thomas Bowles is listed as have died on 17 Aug 1878 in Welsh Run PA, and that he married Susan Angle(a) on 14 Mar 1837, and that she was born on 13 Dec 1817. Now keep in mind that this information is without visible documentation. However, if it is accurate, this is clearly the Thomas and Susan Bowles that we find in Franklin County PA. Now here I make a leap and suggest that this Thomas Bowles is brother to Ann Bowles who married William Shannon. She was born in 1804, he in 1806. His first born is named Samuel, her father's name. If all this is right, then we have this line connected from Thomas Bowles from England through Samuel Bowles who married Mary Miller to Thomas Bowles, husband of Susan Angle. Comments welcome.

3. So quite a few then. Are these documented families? Jacob, Samuel and Thomas are all given names in Flavius' line. John, Isaac and James are not. John is strangely missing though as it's probably the number one most common name. -----Original Message----- From: bowles-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bowles-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Charles Hartley Sent: 10 June 2009 19:39 To: bowles@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BOWLES] Daniel M. 3. It sounds like a good theory. Daniel had a son Thomas and Thomas had a son Daniel. Daniel born about 1798 and Thomas b. about 1808 is an acceptably good date range for siblings. Also both Thomas and Daniel were born in Maryland and settled in Pennsylvania. And then found on the same page of the 1840 Pennsylvania census. Lots of parallels. Is there a known Maryland family of Bowles of the late 1790's for Daniel and Thomas? Particularly Washington county, Maryland which Flavius gave as his place of birth on his marriage registration. -----Original Message----- From: bowles-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bowles-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Charles Hartley Sent: 10 June 2009 14:44 To: bowles@rootsweb.com Subject: [BOWLES] Daniel M. 3. Excellent work on the census records Charles. Thomas and Susan Bowles were both born in Maryland, possibly Washington county, MD as that's the specific place of birth that Flavius gave on his 1871 marriage registration. Apparently, they then moved to Montgomery, PA where Thomas was a merchant. Flavius is probably missing from the 1870 Census with the rest of his siblings as he was probably already in Chicago. He was 'of Chicago' on his 1871 marriage record. I notice that you found Luther in the 1900 census. Was there no Flavius in Leesburg, Virginia by 1900? He was living there in 1896 when his daughter Florence married Oscar Breesee of Baltimore in Leesburg. Did you see any Bowles in Leesburg in 1900? I'm going to see what I can find out on the Loudoun county, Virginia forum. So far, this is what I have. I haven't added the Luther Bowles line yet. Thomas Bowles b. ~ 1808 Maryland (merchant) m. Susan M. ? (b. ~ 1818 Maryland) about 1837 (possibly Maryland) (living in Montgomery, Franklin co., PA in 1860 and 1870) 1. Samuel M. Bowles b. ~ 1838 PA (possibly MD) 2. Major Flavius J. Bowles b. ~ 1841 Washington co., MD or in PA (building contractor) (lived Chicago in 1871, Ontario 1871 to mid-1870's, U.S. 1877, Manitoba 1879-1892, Leesburg VA 1892-?) m. Florence Elmore (b. ~ 1852 New Orleans; William, Julia) Dec. 13, 1871 Woodstock, Ont. 2.1 Florence Bowles b. ~ 1875 Ont. m. Oscar F. Breesee Jr. of Baltimore June 16, 1896 Leesburg, VA 2.2 Minor (or possibly F. J. Jr.) b. ~ 1877 USA d. June 9, bur.
