After 20+ years of research, searching, DNA testing etc we are still not able to find record of William Bowers b. 1787 Virginia and d. 1860 in Johnson County Arkansas. He is my 4th Great Grandfather. He first appears in the 1850 US Census in Johnson County with his wife Sabra and five children. He does not appear in the 1860 census but Sabra does. Has anyone seen a reference to William and his family in Virginia? My Sincere Thanks, Rory Bowers
Rory, Have you search on Familysearch.org and FindAGrove.com? My Lazarus Fracis Bowers b about 1840 in Germany. He arrived here aboutor after 1845 in census 1850 or 1860 something else. My brick wall is his parents and sibling. He was married a Martha Clark in Indiana in 1866 and a few children before moved into Missour and added more children. Do you have William's parents and siblings, uncle, aunts and more families? Thank You CS, Based on the birth year of their first born child we are certain that William and Sabra were married by 1843. It is interesting that there is such a disparity between their ages in 1850. Sabra was 32 and William was 63. We have surmised that it is possible that he had already been married once before. We know for a fact that she had because she brought her two young sons with her. Sabra was part Cherokee and we have researched her entire family. Thanks for the suggestions but we have touched all available online sources. Rory, My Jeremiah Bowers was born in VA but in 1767. County unknown at this time. But I've found a lot of Bowers in Norfolk Co. VA but can't figure them all out. Think Norfolk is a possibility for some of our Bowers. My Jeremiah was in Nash Co., NC by 1800 for certain. Lots of Bowers there too but they kept on migrating, next stop TN. Here's a bit of info I've collected: NORFOLK CO., VIRGINIA In 1820 census, there were the following Bowers: Thomas Bowers, 2 Males age 16-26 (1 engaged in Manufacture) Carr Bowers, 2 Males age 16-26 (2 engaged in Manufacture) James Bowers, 1 Male to age 10, 1 Male 10-16, 1 Male 26-45, 1 Female to age 10, 2 Females 45+ William Bowers, 1 Male to age 10, 1 Male 16-26, 1 Male 45+, 1 Female 26-45 Jeremiah Bowers, age 16-26, 1 Female to age 10, 1 Female 16-26, (3 engaged in Agriculture) The book Norfolk Co. VA Tithables 1766-1780 compiled by Elizabeth B. Wingo & W. Bruce Wingo show both Bowers and Deans families. It is known that both families were in Nash Co., NC in the late 1700's. (Nancy Deans m. Samuel Eason and later m. Maxwell Bowers. Nancy is the mother of Margaret Eason who m. Jeremiah Bowers.) Names appearing in Norfolk Co. VA Tithables 1766-1780 were: 1767-James, Maxmillian, Bartley, John, and Robert Bowers 1767-Daniel, Lamuell, Thomas, Solomon, and James(Sr.), William(Sr.), Willis, and William(Jr.) Deans 1768-Bartley, Robert, John and James Bowers 1768-Solomon, William(Jr.), James, Lamuell, Thomas, William, and Willis Deans 1770-Bartlett and Max Bowers 1771-Bartle and Maximilian Bowers 1774-Bartlet Bowars Another county is Southampton Co., VA While the dates for both counties are earlier than you mention, there seemed to be many of the same names...you and I are researching. I have the names James, Maximillian, Bartley, Robert, Jeremiah, and William. Hope this might be of some help to you but for years, I've not been able to determine without a doubt that Norfolk Co. is the right county. I need a will but not found any, or even property division.
