    1. [BOWERS] Bowers Genealogy

    3. We are finally finished clearing all the trees in our wooded area downed by Hurricane Ike last September. At last, I can get back to genealogy! I was recently looking at the Bowers DNA project as regards several Bowers known to have resided in NC in nearby counties. The following two are represented in the DNA project: 1. GILES BOWERS of Franklin Co., NC. This line goes back to Isle of Wight VA. 2. JEREMIAH BOWERS b. VA 1768, resided Nash Co., NC; Sumner & Wilson Co., TN; Todd & Logan Co., KY. (See John Bowers on the Patriarch page of the DNA Project.) Please note, the above two do not have matching DNA. To my knowledge, the two Bowers below, also having resided in NC for a time, and later TN as well,do not appear to be part of the DNA project at this time. There were several people researching these two lines in the past but not sure if anyone is still on the list who is. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think I saw them listed on the FTDNA Bowers DNA Project's Patriarchs page nor the DNA Results page. JAMES BOWERS b. Morristown, NJ, May 28, 1756, lived in NC before migrating to Montgomery Co., TN. James is a Revolutionary War patriot and his information is from pension papers. WILLIAM PITT BOWERS b. NJ 1767, lived in NC, married Sally Gomer, migrated to Davidson Co., TN shortly after marriage.

    3. Emily, James Bowers was a Revolutionary War patriot: NJ Militia. He lived in Montgomery Co., TN. Apparently was born May 28, 1756, Morristown, NJ and d. after March 9,1843, Sumner Co., TN. He also lived in NC but I'm not sure when he arrived there or when he went to TN. I'm not sure what county he was in while living in NC but would like to know since my Bowers were in Nash Co. NC from around the time of the Rev. until about 1796-1800. Mine are in Davidson Co., TN beginning 1796-1800. I am still trying to find where my group was prior to NC....whether VA or NJ...and find it interesting that so many seemed to be in NC and then in TN at about the same time. The dates make one wonder if they all came as a group and whether related or not. I cannot tell you anything about his time in NJ, but I would be interested to know about your group in NJ. Notes I have from others state that James is in Montgomery Co., TN 1820 census with his wife, son James, and daughter Elizabeth. Children were: John b. 1785 NC (1850 census lists John Bowers, age 65, b. NC), d. after 1850 census, Montgomery Co., TN Joseph b. March 1787 NC d. Sept. 23, 1844 in Montgomery Co., TN James b. 1801 in Montgomery Co., TN Elizabeth b. 1803 in TN 1840 Census: James (Rev. Soldier) living with son James in 1840 Males: 1 - Age 30-40 1 - Age 80-90 Listed as age 84/Rev. War Pension Females: 1 - Under 5 1 - Age 20-30 Also, pension papers and other census records for sons show/state James had lived in NC. He is said to have moved to Sumner Co. to live with daughter where he later died. From notes, he served 1776-1780 NJ. The reason I did the DNA test is because there are too many Bowers with same names, similar names in families and all having lived near to each other in several of the same states. I believe I have looked at the records of nearly every Bowers in Middle TN! Like everyone else, I have to research every Bowers in NC and now VA and NJ! Seemed like the DNA test might help narrow things down but we don't have enough in the database yet. See my pages on William Pitt Bowers: http://www.geocities.com/dhinson2000/GenealogyPages.html This is all I have on James. Hope it helps.
