I was just cleaning up some more ancient emails. One was from back in 2005 when the Bowers DNA project was just getting started. Terry Barton mentioned having over 140 members in the Barton surname project. Here it is 2008, and our Bowers project seems at a standstill with less than 40 participants. Bowers is one of the more common surnames and we seem to have a lot of stragglers out there we can't connect. In my group in Middle TN, we have several Bowers groups: James Bowers of Montgomery Co. TN who hails from Morris Co. NJ, William Pitt Bowers of Davidson Co., TN who was in Pitt Co., NC at one time. There's Jeremiah Bowers of Wilson Co., TN who was also in Nash Co., NC and went to KY around 1837. One of his sons went to MS about that time, as well. Also in Wilson Co., TN are: James, William, Jesse m. Nancy Mann 1810, GILES who d. 1818, Benjamin b. 1775 or earlier, and Morris Bowers. Who are they? Are all these in middle TN Bowers related? We will probably never know unless their descendants do a DNA test. My Jeremiah had sons who also moved to IL, so you northern Bowers could be cousins of us southern Bowers. I'm sure we must have the same mysteries for Bowers in other states. With such a common name, we should really have had more than 40 participates by now. I know the cost is not cheap, but FamilyTree DNA has a very good price (about $119) through the end of the month right now for the 37 marker test. I bet I have more than $100 worth of paper copies of every Bowers I could find in NC, TN, KY, and MS in my file cabinet, not to speak of trips I've made all over the U.S. to research Bowers. I wish DNA had been around when I started my research. I could have immediately ended researching the Giles Bowers in Franklin Co. NC for one as well as all those others I do not match. BTW, I do not have any financial interest in FamilyTree DNA. I would simply like to see us figure out our Bowers connections and the 2005 email I just deleted from Terry about how many participants triggered this note. I know many of us are at a brick wall in the 1700's, some at more recent dates as well. Many records were lost in courthouse fires. But if we have a male descendant willing to contribute DNA, then we might solve some of our mysteries. My mystery right now is where in VA was Jeremiah born in 1768? Where should I look for his parents? VA has many counties and many Bowers. The same sort of mysteries surround Bowers from AR NC, SC and Georgia and many other states. If we had a larger group of participants, I think many relationship questions could be resolved, or we would at least know where to focus our research and might have several cousins who could help each other research. Anyway, you have about 3 more days to take advantage of the special price so I thought I would throw out a reminder. Check the website below: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/bowers/ Donna

Bill, I did not mention a Lemuel in this note. Are you referring to another note? However, there was a Lemuel in Davidson Co., TN and also another in Wilson Co., TN, just east of Davidson Co. They are two different Lemuel's. Is the Davidson Co., TN Lemuel, your Lemuel? Or the Wilson Co. Lemuel? Let me know. Do you know a male Bowers descendant who would join the DNA group? We need to figure out these Middle TN Bowers! I have some info on Lemuel Bowers of Wilson Co. TN also. I have been unable to connect any of them to my Bowers who also lived in Wilson Co. TN. Are we all cousins? I think DNA is the only way we will ever know if they're all connected or not. Donna wstaggs189@aol.com wrote: > Donna Hinson,? That is my Lemuel.
