    1. [BOWERS] Bower Line of Maine/Mass
    2. Nicole S. Flournoy
    3. Hello Shirley and Everyone! I forget that my e-mail program send mail out in HTML form the first time that I sent the message with all the important information. So, I had to re-type the message really quick and send it out again in plain text format. I guess, I forgot to add the one important fact. Chin Kwen Bow at some point in time changed his name to Charles Kwen Bower. Family story says, he was in America and needed to have an American name. I have no clue where or when he changed his name. I do not know if Charles's brothers or parents also changed their names. I have no idea. Unfortunately, there have been some "tiffs" in the family and they are not close anymore. It's like pulling teeth from a horse to get any information. Sorry the most important part of the story was not added! I do apologize! Thanks again! Nicole Flournoy

    3. Thanks Colleen, Here it goes again! Hi Shirley, I'm afraid your message never made it to the list. Rootsweb doesn't recognize your telepath email addy. Did you sign up using a different one? If so, that's the only one you'll be able to use. However, if it's more convenient for you, we can always sign you up under this telepath, too. Quite a few cousins get email at work and at home. Seems they just can't be without us! <g> Your question to Nicole was really a good one! Please, for the sake of the rest of us (inquiring minds want to know!) :) post your message again under the addy that Rootsweb will recognize. Thanks so much. I hope you have a FANTASTIC Friday! 1. [BOWERS] CHAT: REUNION 2000
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi again family, I thought to put this in today's Coffee message, but decided against it since not everyone participates in them. The deadline for submitting your "food" for our family reunion was 10 July 2000. However, with my two-week absence and no reminders, participation in this event is extremely low. Because of my failure to remind you all I'm extending the deadline to Wednesday, July 19th. Please begin sending your dishes DIRECTLY TO ME so I'll have time to "set the table" [put the files online]. If we don't have more participation in the reunion than what we currently have, this year's family event will have to be cancelled. For benefit of you new cousins: On August 5th, 1998 at 9 p.m. European time [equating to 3 p.m. on the U.S. east coast] the Bower Family Homestead held its housewarming and the Bower discussion group was officially launched. Since then our family has grown to four separate research groups. In all four groups we are nearly 450 cousins now, coming together from around the world. Our two-year anniversary is coming up in just about 2 months and we'll be celebrating with a potluck cyber-reunion/ picnic on August 5th. Our potluck "meal" will be files of Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur data donated by each of the cousins in all the family groups to "feed" the family - a "dish" such as a list, a county census extraction, a biography, 3-4 generations of a family, a couple wills, a few deeds, a county's/country's obituaries for a given period, immigration/emigration records, pictures, copies of certificates [deceased only - no living], etc. We all have material gathered during our searches. As with any potluck, you can be creative! You can submit one dish, or as many as you'd like. Following the reunion, the data will be housed at the Homestead and you will be given the credit for anything you submit with an email link for the surfing public to contact you. I take no credit for any of your work. What Bower/Bauer/Baur "recipe" would you like to share and "feed" the family with? I hope you all have a super, super Sunday! Colleen

    1. [BOWERS] SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. ) ( ) Good Morning Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new Bower/Bauer/Baur, etc. cousins 2. Illinois Continuum site up for adoption 3. Two more research groups added to the family 4. Bringing your cousins together If you've been with the family [the BOWER-L list] for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraph… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer/ Baur lines or any of the variant spellings that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead>, or you can use our shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/Homestead>. We also have a newly opened sister site, the Bower Cottage, that we've begun to fill. There are currently only a few names there, but give us time... :) The Cottage is at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowercottage>, or you can use the shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/bowercottage>. ILLINOIS CONTINUUM SITE UP FOR ADOPTION Mark Middleton <[email protected]> has built a terrific Illinois site <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Grove/8230> for our Bower/Bauer, etc. researchers but has found he needs to give it up. Do you have spare time to take this site over from him? If so, please contact Mark directly to work out the details. TWO MORE RESEARCH GROUPS ADDED TO THE FAMILY The family grew again this week! I picked up the Brower and Brouwer discussion lists, neither of which are very large, 42 and 30 cousins, respectively. For the next two weeks these new cousins will be holding a roll call, one group per week. Unless the individual surname appears, the Bowers, Bauer and Baur groups will NOT be affected by this roll call - only the Bower group will see a slight increase in traffic as I'll be cross-posting messages to them. BRINGING YOUR COUSINS TOGETHER The grandparents pass away. Next, the parents, aunts and uncles depart this life. With today's world, if your family is anything like mine your first cousins live in six different states with at least one in a distant country. Also if you're like me, you wouldn't know your first cousins if they passed you on the street - it's been that long since you've seen them. Who holds your childhood family together - not your sibling family, but your cousins? Usually it's the grandparents and once they're gone, it's the aunts and uncles who hold the bonds of family unity. What happens to that family unity once those aunts and uncles pass away? Who will be there to see that your family doesn't go in twelve different directions with the family information and heirlooms being spread even further? As we are our family's historians, who better than us to begin bringing our first cousins together to start talking and bonding? In my own family we'll be talking and sharing with each other by way of a private site at <MyFamily.com>. How else could we, so spread apart, otherwise communicate together? An added benefit though, is that one of our aunts will be there with us to help melt the ice and get us all talking. Another idea is for the family seniors to schedule a reunion for benefit of the cousins. The concept is for the elder generation to begin handing over the family's "reins" if you will, so that when WE and our first cousins become the bonds holding the family together, it can be done with close family unity and not that of casual acquaintances. Bringing first cousins together strengthens the family while at the same time assuring its information and history remains intact. Weak family bonds are a prime reason second-hand stores have that box of lost souls I spoke of three weeks ago. I don't plan to let ANY treasures, be they cousins, letters, pictures, etc., escape my family! I'm also trying to prevent anyone in my family from becoming one of those future "lost ancestors" my own descendants may one be looking for. What about you? Family... it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. It was so nice. I hope you all have a fantastic next two weeks. I wish you all a week filled with health, fun, productivity, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

    1. [BOWERS] Chat: 1790-1920 Census
    2. Good Morning all, Won't this be a GREAT thing, i cannot begin to imagine, well~ I can!! but... awesome tool online! Enjoy Brenda - Entire 1790-1920 U.S. Census to be Available Online Soon One of the dreams of genealogists is about to come true: the ability to view any or all of the original census records by using a home computer. You no longer need to travel to a distant library or Family History Center during the hours they are open. Soon you will be able to view the same images at any hour of the day or night while comfortably seated at home. This isn't the first online census database. A few smaller such databases have already appeared. However, these were quite small in comparison, featuring only the 1790 records or census records of particular cities or counties for a few years. Now SierraHome and their rather newly acquired Heritage Quest division have announced that they will be placing all the U.S. Census records online, from 1790 through 1920. Best of all, this database will contain actual images of the original records in the enumerators' handwriting. Such records are much more accurate than the more error-prone transcriptions made by clerk typists. One fact about this new database that fascinates me is its size: It will be about 3.5 terabytes on the day it launches, making it the largest single database on the Internet. (A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes or one million megabytes.) The database is expected to grow to 10 terabytes as more data is added. Here is an extract from the announcement from Generations and Heritage Quest: GenealogyDatabase.com The World's Largest Online Family History Resource Breaking News -- What's the Scoop? This fall, SierraHome's Generations brand and Heritage Quest will be launching GenealogyDatabase.com with the very first online collection of all U.S. Census images from 1790 - 1920. (1920 was the last year released to the public because of the 72-year waiting period. The 1930 census will be released on April 1, 2002.) Heritage Quest is also working on indexes for each year, and has already completed 1790, 1800 and 1870. This is a monumental step forward for online genealogy resources and will be of great interest to serious genealogy enthusiasts and newbies alike. The census is widely regarded as the most important primary source for tracing one's family heritage. GenealogyDatabase.com will be the largest collection of primary source documents on the Web, many of which will be searchable through Heritage Quest's painstaking efforts to extract the names into indexes which link directly to the digitally enhanced image pages. GenealogyDatabase.com will also be accessible through HeritageQuest.com and SierraHome.com. The site will be subscription-based, comparable to other genealogy sites currently online. We will update you on the pricing model when it becomes available. The most important thing to keep in mind is that GenealogyDatabase.com will be the ONLY site offering the entire collection of U.S. Federal Census images for people to access from the comfort of home. Just How Big is This? The sheer magnitude of the site is newsworthy in its own right; it will be the world's largest known web-enabled database. We will be posting approximately 3.5 terabytes of images and data at launch, with a goal of 10 terabytes of Heritage Quest resources being posted in the foreseeable future. To put things in perspective, Microsoft's famed Terrabase Server of spy satellite images is 1.5 terabytes. In July 1999, Nature Magazine estimated the basic data in the entire World Wide Web to constitute roughly 15 terabytes, so this site is breaking new ground both in terms of size and importance to family history enthusiasts everywhere. The Census data alone is the equivalent of 12,555 rolls of microfilm and sells for $250,000. There will be 10 million images of Census pages at launch, representing more than 500 million Americans. Heritage Quest is committed to indexing new names at the astounding rate of 500,000 per week! Anything else I should I know about? Furthermore, we intend to make this a living Web community. One feature we're working on for the site will be a "sticky note" technology where members can leave messages behind for others looking at the same page of the census. Keep in mind that census entries were done door-to-door, meaning that families listed on the same census page were neighbors. Many genealogists believe it's essential to research in clusters, since people simply didn't move as often or as far back in the 18th and 19th centuries. GenealogyDatabase.com members can leave behind messages requesting information, pictures, or even correct errors that they know to exist on that particular census page. NOTE: This "sticky note" technology will not be available at launch, so genealogists should check back because we will be adding new names and features each week once the site launches! With a site this huge, we will be introducing new innovations in stages. Give me the nitty gritty details. At launch, GenealogyDatabase.com will offer: * Digital images of the U.S. Census from 1790 - 1920. * The most accurate indexes for the years 1790, 1800, and 1870, which will let site members type in the names of ancestors and link directly to the digital images of handwritten census pages. (Keep in mind that these are fresh extractions of the census. It was determined that existing indexes were filled with errors, which was unacceptable to us. Heritage Quest has recently completed fresh extractions of these three census years. Other years are in the works.) * Approximately 3.5 Terabytes of images and data - possibly the largest single database on the Internet, and definitely the largest genealogy database in terms of size And much more to come. . . Heritage Quest is the world's largest private supplier of genealogical data and we fully intend to bring these resources online to aid people in their quest to discover their family heritage. Who's Creating this Monumental New Web Resource? Heritage Quest is the world's largest private commercial supplier of genealogy data. In 1999, Havas Interactive acquired Heritage Quest, which became a part of SierraHome and the Generations line of CD-ROM and online genealogy tools. Heritage Quest's vast collection of family history data includes more than 250,000 titles of books, CDs, microfilm and the nationally acclaimed Heritage Quest magazine. These can be ordered online at www.heritagequest.com or by phone at 800- 760-2455. The "sticky note" feature looks particularly appealing. Even the original census records had errors; now genealogists will be able to append notes containing corrections or comments to individual census entries. You might want to keep an eye on the Web site at: http://GenealogyDatabase.com. There's not much available at that URL today, but that will change sometime later this year. I expect to write more about this new U.S. Census database as the launch date draws near. Brenda K. 3. Hi family, Well, I'm home. We finally saw our two eldest kids and with everyone in the same room it was like a community coming together! :) It was wonderful to see the kids again, and I miss them dearly already (the two oldest who don't live at home anymore, I mean). Have you ever been white-water rafting?... No, I didn't (just not brave enough!), but the family did and just loved it! I came home to a cranky computer who's very put out with me (really). My hubby is currently building me a new one to hopefully, put an end to all these crashes I've been having. So, I'll be here but may be offline here and there while he gets this new one up and running. I noticed that not too many messages went through while I was gone. Shall we all get to talking and sharing information again? Let's see if we can get a couple summer bingos cranked out, okay? Dang but I missed you all! :) It's good to be home.... Colleen

    3. Hi cousins, Beginning today (27 June) until 6 July I'll be on a mini-vacation. We'll be on the road, but I'll have my laptop with me and will hook-up whenever I can to check e-mail. If you need to contact me please use my Web-based e-mail address -- <[email protected]>. Also, this is a reminder that there won't be a Sunday Morning Coffee this week since I'm not sure I'll be anywhere to be able to get online. 'See' you all when we get back! :) I hope your week is filled with health, happiness and most of all, filled with love. Colleen

Welcome to new Bower/Bauer/Baur, etc. cousins 2. Please remember to vote! 3. A descendant's nightmare 4. Semi-availability of Colleen - NO COFFEE NEXT WEEK 5. Kuzin's Korner If you've been with the family [the BOWER-L list] for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraph… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead>, or you can use or shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/Homestead>. PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE When you go to the front page at the Homestead please remember to click on the logo in the top right corner; at the Cottage it's a link on the second page near the bottom (where the shells are). Help me keep our sites - and data - in view of the surfing public by clicking on each one every day (or even several times a day). You can return to the Homestead or Cottage from the World Wide Top 100 site simply by hitting the 'Back' button on your browser twice. It only takes a few seconds to vote, but it makes such a difference toward our families being seen. We need to stay on one of the front two pages if we're to receive any discernable amount of surfing traffic. A DESCENDANT'S NIGHTMARE Can we talk here? You know, as well-meaning genealogists and family historians we ask all the "right" questions, cite our sources and do our best to keep good records. Fortunately, we also have well-meaning relatives who try to help us with our research by giving us family materials - or photocopies thereof. For the most part we can pretty much tell where the information is coming from and which ancestors we're dealing with. However, one of the _THE_ saddest instances of our research involves boxes of pictures and family photo albums. Oh, I don't mean those current shots where everybody still knows who the people are in the pictures. I'm talking about those OLLLLLDDD pictures - the musty, time-worn tintypes and cardboard ones. You don't see many tintypes, but how many times have you been to a flea market, an antique or second-hand store and found a box full of cardboard pictures with no names on the back? That box _always_ reminds me of an unmarked grave. All those people... all those families... all those lineages... just sitting in a box of lost souls. What am I getting at here? What's the point of this missive? It's two-fold: 1.) Have your relatives marked the backs of all their pictures? When they pass on, if you should be the recipient of their albums and boxes of pictures, can you identify _all_ the people in _all_ their pictures? Probably not, and you as the "lucky" heir of this treasure could face a nightmare -- knowing you're looking at (at least some) old relatives but not knowing who they are. 2.) We are not working on our ancestries for people today, but to leave legacies for future generations who may not ever get to meet you. Have YOU marked all YOUR pictures?... Or, will your grandchildren or great-grandchildren one day inherit a bunch of nameless faces only to be haunted by a nightmare you could have prevented? I happen to be one of the "fortunates" who now possess four family photo albums from my deceased grandparents along with two boxes just stuffed with pictures. Are the people identified? No. Do I know who these people are? No. Can my mother identify all or some of the people? Fortunately, a few. Unfortunately, not her own grandfather though she knows he's in one of the albums. (He died when she was very young.) What does this mean for me? I now own pictures of nameless people and, though I won't even consider the "unmentionable", already know that unless I can put names to these faces, one day portions of this treasure will be relegated to "that" box - that unmarked grave of lost souls. I could cry over this for I know my great-grandfather will sit in "that box." All my current-day pictures are marked - but those newly acquired cardboard pictures?... *sigh* Will this nightmare I now face also happen to you or your children or (great) grandchildren? I hope not. Please cousins, talk to your grandparents and parents. Ask them to mark their pictures. I know, you'll do it tomorrow, right? Well, keep in mind you just don't know how long you're going to live! We've all heard the saying, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." So is a family's heritage. SEMI-AVAILABLITY OF COLLEEN >From 27 June until 6 July I'll be on a vacation of sorts. After three long, long, long <g> years, I'm finally going to be seeing my two eldest children again! yaaay! This is the first opportunity we've all been able to schedule a reunion since my husband's and my return from Germany last year. So, I'll be taking a break to spend time with them. We'll be on the road, but I'll have my laptop with me so won't be completely out of touch with you (I couldn't begin to think of doing THAT! VBG) Effective 27 June I'll move over to my web-based e-mail address <[email protected]>. You'll be able to reach me there though I won't be able to get online everyday. I'll send a reminder on the 27th so you won't forget and think I've left you high and dry (*shudder*). Since I can't guarantee that I'll be in a place to hook up my laptop there will not be a Coffee next week. KUZIN'S KORNER Jacquie Daniels, aka "Jak", <[email protected]> will be leaving for the Australian Olympics any hour now. Jak, YOU GO GIRL! As you step out on the competition line know that you have an entire online family rooting for you! We all wish you a safe trip and the ecstacy of winning an Olympic medal. May your arrows fly true with BOWER POWER!!! VBG BOW-ER, BOW-ER, BOW-ER! Family... it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. It was so nice. I hope you all have a fantastic next two weeks. I wish you all the next 14 days filled with health, fun, productivity, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/.
