Hi cousins, As I was writing to you, another warning came in - this forwarded from another list: About two weeks someone received a complaint from an Archives submitter (and I don't know which Archives) that her materials were found on a genealogy subscription service. www.familydiscovery.com The submitter was able to do a little digging and found that they were linking to her files housed on her server, but shrink-wrapped inside a frame so it appears to be THEIR work. About 10 days ago, to investigate this, the sender of this information signed up with familydiscovery. To date, she had not received a user id or password to get inside. The registered owners of the web site gave bogus telephone numbers in their registration. One number goes to a recorded message line, the other to a carpet company. Some of the e-mail adds on their web site bounce. Standing on the outside and looking through the window, it appears that several folks' web sites have been prize-mined. http://www.familydiscovery.com/whatsnew.htm The Storey Co, IA and the Washington Co, PA stuff seem to come from USGENWEB sites. Some of the other IA and NC stuff seems to come from non-USGW sites. One of the materials seem to be housed at either rootsweb or gennet. If anyone out there is or has been a member of familydiscovery - or has been ripped off by them I ("Joy Fisher" [email protected] ) would like to hear from you. Permission is granted to foreward this message. - Joy Fisher- ~~~~~~~~~~~~ If I find out more, I'll let you know. Please do the same. We need to stay on top of this so none of us gets ripped off. Once again, happy Sunday to you all! :) Colleen

Welcome to new cousins 2. GEDCOM updates (PLEASE READ) 3. A warning (PLEASE READ THIS ONE TOO) 4. Spotlights If you've been with the family for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraph TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur/Bro[u]wer lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bau[e]r/Bro[u]wer lines or any of the 81+ variant spellings that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead>, or you can use our shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/Homestead>. We also have a newly opened sister site, the Bower Cottage, that we've begun to fill. There are currently only a few names there, but give us time... :) The Cottage is at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowercottage>, or you can use the shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/bowercottage>. GEDCOM UPDATES It's time to submit your GEDCOMs for the Cottage's October update. If you've sent one in already and would like to use the same one again, please let me know. If you're new to the family, you should know there are two requirements: 1. Your GEDCOM can be as long or short as you wish, but it must be primarily about Bower[s], Bau[e]r, Bro[u]wer, or any of our researched variant spellings. (Spouse's lines - include only them and their parents). 2. Absolutely NO living people. The next scheduled update won't be until February, 2001. A WARNING Earlier this week I received a message notifying me about a site, <www.familydiscovery.com> you may want to avoid like the plague. The webmaster there offers you all kinds of records that look great when you first see them. There are two series problem with this site: 1. He is using frames secretly and linking to US GenWeb county sites so that it looks like he is the one who did all the work, when in actuality, the work was done by GenWeb volunteers and others who donated to their sites. His frames are also next to impossible to break out of. 2. You are charged a "special rate" and "one-time access fee" of $49.95 - saving you "$30.00 over the regular $79.99 recurring 3-month rate" for information THAT IS ALREADY FREE!!! He has already hit many, many US GenWeb projects and steps are being taken to shut him down. I was hoping to have more information for you at this writing, but you now know all that I do. SPOTLIGHTS Are you aware that we have two areas at the Homestead used specifically for spotlighting individual ancestral families? The parlor is used to introduce pre-1790 ancestors and their descendants, while the dining room is for those after-1790. Would you like to formally introduce your ancestor and his/her descendants to the family and the world? You can submit as much [or as little] as you wish, photos are okay, the narrative format is up to you. All I'll do is format your piece for Web display and edit any typos [if necessary]; the rest is up to you. If you're not sure what I mean just visit the current rooms at the Homestead and see what's already there. In these spotlights you'll find full blown pedigrees and/or bios sometimes accompanied with pictures. All ancestors leave the parlor or dining room [when someone else has an ancestor to spotlight] to move to the kitchen [probably looking for muchies!]. :) Contact me at <[email protected]> if you're interested. Family ... it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Hi family, I don't know what, why or how it happened - replies from messages to Crosswinds have not given me a morsel of a clue - but over 300 of our files and graphics were wiped offline. I presume it began around August 4th when one of our cousins, Bobbi [dbdunn], notified me that graphics in the main hallway at the Homestead were broken. [Thanks so much, Bobbi, for letting me know. I DO appreciate you! :) ] Thinking it was just a "computer thing" I made the repairs, then Monday was notified by another cousin, Mark [OldIllini], that pages were missing. [Mark, I thank you as well, so much. :) ] Upon receiving a search engine notice that the Homestead had been spidered early this morning is when I realized something was drastically wrong; nearly one-third of our files and graphics were missing! I've spent all day going through the Homestead and uploading all the missing graphics and files. Another message to Crosswinds today regarding this situation has not been replied to yet. The point of my message ~~ PLEASE, if you see ANY broken graphics or missing files, notify me immediately! I work very, very hard trying to keep our home tidy and particularly, your material visible to visitors. If you've been to the Homestead in the past several weeks, done a search and come away with nothing, please go back and see if your search will work a second time. I believe I have all pages online now, but won't know that until I've done another links check. I'll _try_ to do one tomorrow. Thanks cousins. Colleen
Hello!! I just wanted to let some of the new people on the list know that I have my Bowers Family Website online at: http://www.expage.com/page/bowersfamily I am hoping to find some family connections or maybe someone would have some further information on this Bowers line. I have just updated the website, so there is alot more info there than before. Mike
KERSHAW COUNTY MAN FOUND DEAD -------------------------------------------------------------- Landy Bowers Died During Night _____________________________ Camden, Feb. 7 (1922)-- Landy Bowers, a well respected citizen of the northeast section of Kershaw county, was found dead in his bed Tuesday morning. Mr. Bowers retired the night before in apparent good health. The next morning when breakfast had been prepared one of his daughters went to his room to call him, but getting no response she reported to another member of the family who immediately went to his room and upon trying to arouse him found that he was dead. Mr. Bowers was 63 years of age and is survived by his wife and 12 children--seven sons and five daughters, all grown, and all married with one exception. His body was interred on Thursday. (note...this is Kershaw ,SC)
List, I have found a obit for Landy Bowers that died Feb. 1922 in Kershaw County, SC. He does not belong to my Bowers that I know of. Anybody interested??? Linda Shull

What have I been working on? ...well, a Christmas present to all of you! :) But, I can't stay quiet and away from you all for long as I end up missing you too much! So, I'm popping back in to join you all for Sunday coffee. Care to join me? Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Ongoing family projects 3. WHOPBOF site fight (PLEASE READ THIS) 4. FAMILY PROJECTS If you're new - within the last four or five months, you'll want to read this section ~~ We've been pretty quiet lately, but this isn't really normal for us. I think we're all kind of taking a breather from the summertime activities, but school is starting next week or has just begun and we're swinging back into the routine of our "indoor" period. I'd like to let you know about our family projects because we need to get them all off the backburner they were relegated to at the beginning of summer. You're certainly invited to join one or more activities and we'd certainly welcome the extra help ~~ NOTE: .etc after all the surnames denotes all the variant surnames we also research. You'll find a list of them at the Homestead and Cottage by doing a search on the engines at each site for the term 'variants', or you'll find the variants page off the main hallway at the Homestead. In the Cottage the variants page is linked in Lookup Project. **THE CONTINUUM** This is one of our biggest projects that hasn't been doing too well and we really need to work at getting it back into the swing. This activity is designed to help all our Bower[s], Bau[e]r, Bro[u]wer, etc. cousins find sources and resouces on the Web under one common roof. Are you familiar with the US GENWEB project? The Continuum parallels it by using our surname spellings and their variants. We currently have one country and eight states represented ~~ Australia, California, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. We'd like you to join us, build an online Continuum site, and aid in our efforts to get all those Bower[s]/Bau[e]r/Bro[u]wer sites that are already online linked from one centralized site rather than having to use a generalized search engine like HotBot or InfoSeek to search them out. If you'd be interested in hosting a Continuum site, please contact me at <[email protected]>. **LOOKUP PROJECT** This project is nearly brand new and officially began with the opening of the Cottage at Crosswinds. Lookup project volunteers have small libraries in their homes or have access to research facilities. The volunteers join a private email list set aside specifically for the project to discuss project problems and general project discussion. We're always looking for Lookup volunteers and if you'd like to join us, please contact me at the above e-mail address. **Y2K PROJECT** This project is a time-capsule of sorts and will close on December 31st this year. It's on display in the attic at the Homestead. We're looking for ALL Bower[s]/Bau[e]r/ Bro[u]wer, etc. ancestors who were alive to ring in the 1899/1900 New Year. It doesn't matter whether or not they were your relatives, how old they were, where they were living, whether or not they were even at home, or in a different state or country, single or married - makes no difference. All that matters is that they were alive that particular New Year. You'll see the format we're looking for once you've been to see the project. In addition, a contact name if you can provide more information, or the source of your information is required. To enter your material in this database, please send their information to me (e-mail address above). **THE RETREAT** Closed down for the summer, our retreat will re-open the middle of September. It's a secure site at <MyFamily.com>. There, we can have live chats with one another - not just about genealogy - but real 'family' chats. Access to the Retreat is private and by invitation only. Those invitations will be sent only to cousins who express an interest in participating. If you'd like to receive an invitation, please contact Vicky Bowers-Gielau at <[email protected]>. **GEDCOM PROJECT** If you've been to the Cottage at all, then you've probably seen this one. Our second update will be in October and I'll begin calling for your submissions in the next two weeks. The title alone explains the project. **FAMILY CHRISTMAS** Have you been to the Cottage yet? Yes? Have you been to the reunion page? If not, you definitely want to do so. If you have, then you'll know the basic premise of our family Christmas. Yes, we spend Christmas together as a family. We give gifts to the family instead of individuals, though. Gifts are files of information, the same as those potluck dishes at the reunion. Again, like the reunion, gifts are sent directly to me for "wrapping" and placing under the tree to be opened on Christmas Day. Reminders about Christmas will begin coming out the end of October. WHOPBOF SITE FIGHT Our last project is a strange one. Earlier this year the family participated in a site fight whereby the Homestead was pit against seven other sites in a competition. It won! Then, we were put up against all first place winners who had won for a three month period. WE WORKED VERY HARD for this quarterly competition! The family pulled together and through a group effort brought the Homestead up to a level where our home won again .... even sweeping all the other first place winners in seven categories of competition! Well cousins, in the second week of December, our home will once again go up for competition for the final time. This yearly one will pit us against all the first place quarterly winners .... the cream of the crop, as it were. With all the hard work we did for the quarterly, we won't need to do as much, however..... 1.) For some reason, files keep disappearing from the Homestead. Have you noticed that one day you can pull a page and all it's graphics show up, then the next day some of the graphics are missing or you can't pull the page up at all? I don't know what's going on, and neither does Crosswinds, but we sure can't have our home full of broken graphics, pages missing, etc. If you go to our home and find files or graphics missing, PLEASE let me know IMMEDIATELY! We MUST stay on top of this one! 2.) Our competition page will need to be designed. Since we'll be competing in December, we'll either have our winter page up or our Christmas one. Either way, ideas .... we need ideas! :) I should warn you, I'm not really great on the fancy page applications (javascript, etc.) so you may need to help me out here, but I'll sure try anything to help us win this site fight one more time. And why is winning this so important? It isn't really, EXCEPT when you think about it ... how often have you ever seen a genealogy site win a site fight????? If we win, this will give us yet another route of exposure for our data and THAT alone makes winning this important for us. KUZIN'S KORNER On the top this piece of news might not look good, but all around, it's still a wonderful thing. Our cousin, Jacquie "Jak" Daniels <[email protected]> is back in England and won't be participating in the Olympics, after all. Instead, she's enjoying the comforts of her own bed and her own home. More competitions? You bet! Jak is not down about this at all and has already said she'll be competing again. Our one and only Olympic Bow-er will continue shooting her arrows and doing the family proud. KNOCK THEIR SOCKS OFF, JAK! :) To those cousins with September birthdays, the family and I wish you a very happy and special day. You are loved!! Family ... it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. It was so nice. I wish you all a week filled with health, fun, productivity, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. I am searching for information on my gggrandfather, Joseph BOWERS. He was born c. 1803 in either PA or MD. In 1820 his sister, Mary, married Michael COLLAFLOWER in Frederick Co. MD, and in 1828 Joseph and Michael bought land in Darke Co. OH. He married Elizabeth PARENT in Darke Co. in 1829. He left Darke Co. between 1860 and 1870. His wife, Elizabeth, died in Warren Co. IA in 1883, but I can find no record of Joseph's death or burial. I have been told that his father was born in Germany, so I am interested in the German Immigrant to PA list that Colleen posted on Aug. 14. If anyone has any information on any of those PA immigrants or on the family of Joseph BOWERS, I would love to hear from you. Joan Wilcox Carey [email protected]

Happy Friday Afternoon Cousins! Well, I've certainly been quiet enough this week! :) However, my silent demeanor has been a productive one. Newly opened at the Homestead <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead> is our Ancestral Wall which you will find off the main hallway. You're certainly invited to "hang" your own ancestor's pictures here and perhaps have an inline cousin locate you. Also at the Homestead, the queries are updated. If you've placed one recently, please be sure to check your entry to make sure it's correct. And, at the Cottage <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowercottage> you'll find our long-awaited certificates file begun. As with the Ancestral Wall pictures for the Homestead, submitting your own certificates may also help an inline cousin locate you. Pictures, certificates -- any data, should be sent directly to me <[email protected]> if you'd like to display it at the Homestead or Cottage. Along with all this comes a reminder ~~ at the Cottage I have an area set up where you can enter queries yourselves - no waiting for me to set them up. Once inside the cottage simply scroll down till you see the shells. The link for a queries entry is the first shell of the string. One other thing you may not have even been aware of: I set 4 trivia games up in the game chest on the balcony. If we don't use them, the site that supports those games for us will have me remove them. These are fun, mind-picking trivia games that take only minutes to play but, if you're not interested in a games chest at our "vacation" site, let me know and I'll fill that space in with something else. I just added those as a mind diversion which I thought you might enjoy. I hope you're all having a fantastically fun Friday! :) Colleen

THE 'B' CONSORTIUM The votes are in. I heard from so many of you last week that, without a doubt, the majority of you are happy with our combined name of 'B' Consortium. Thank you all for taking the time to respond. I won't go any further on this subject because, as I told you all last week, it's part of a plan to be unveiled at a future date. [I love secret surprises! Don't you? heh heh heh :) ] FRUSTRATION Cousins, there are days when I throw my hands up and wonder what in the world I'm doing this genealogy for! I have so many other things I could be doing, especially spending time with my family, but here I sit in my study pondering one ancestor's parents or another grandmother's maiden name. Why do we drive ourselves crazy like this? What makes us so self-determined to find a death date that we'll spend hours and hours pouring over barely legible microfilm or a mountain of microfiche we just KNOW will have the answer, and then doesn't. This is frustrated obsession, for tomorrow (or the next day) we'll be right back at it again! We just can't seem to put the ancestors away and leave them there! We KNOW we should be living our lives for the present, yet many, many of us are so stuck in the past that we don't seem to realize just how mired we really are. But frustration ... that niggling, "My luck! They just HAD to have a fire THEN!" or "I've searched the entire east coast, they HAVE to be there someplace!" ... the guarantees that we will all slowly lose our sanity! :) And why do we do this to ourselves and yes, even to our families? It's love; pure and simple love. A love of family coupled with a burning desire to find just that one grandmother, that one ancestral line ... "I'll stop when I find all my immigrants," or "I'll stop after ..." till the "when's" and "after's" have become years and years. I admit it. I'm as guilty as the next person! Cousins, let's see if we can cut some of that frustration and some of those years off our research! I began with a twinkle of an idea [the First Immigrants thread] that has the opportunity to mushroom into something spectacular for all of us. We need to work that thread till we just can't find anything new to add. Additionally, we need MORE ideas to creatively approach our problems and get ourselves past these walls and frustration! I'm already tossing two more ideas around in my head, one blossoming simply because of something a cousin said in an e-mail. But, I get ahead of myself with that, so will not dwell on it at this time. My point of telling you this without elaborating is that YOU also have ideas! Why not pose it/them to the family and let's see if we can make it/them work? We're all in this together, cousins. We need to talk to each other, discuss the data we already know about. We are a combined family of over 500 cousins. I KNOW there must be at least four people among us who are directly inline to each other, but if we get so frustrated with the "list" because our ancestors aren't showing up, then we need to ask ourselves, "When was the last time _I_ posted? How many new cousins might be on board that don't even know who I'm looking for?" You new cousins who haven't posted are probably wondering if you're one of the four people with cousins here who have been WAITING for you to find us! Have you posted yet? Your chances of being one of the four are equally as good as the rest of ours. Obviously, our frustration can be cut down (and so can those years) if we'd just get our data out where everyone can see it. Your volumes of material from days, weeks, months, years - even decades of research is meaningless if you can't tie it up with the answers you've been seeking. Talk to us, cousins. Please let us know what you know. Add more information to the First Immigrants data that has been posted the last two weeks. Help us find more immigrants to add to the thread. Help us find the children of those ancestors, and the subsequent generations of children until cousins can start connecting. Do you have ideas you think we could employ? ... please pass them on to us. If you're nervous about posing an idea to the entire family, you can send it to me and we can talk about it together. Then you or I can pass it to everyone and see what happens. Working together as a family, sharing and helping each other ... Love of family, past and present ... it's what we're all about. I am looking for information on David Bowers b. 1740 , d. 1793 in Edgefield, SC. I have traced his family from Edgefield to Macon Georgia, to Texas and my present family. I would like to find David's parents. I believe that he had brothers Giles, John, and maybe Jacob, could have originated in Isles of Wight Va. . I have no proof just intuition. Thanks for your help. Hi cousins, Okay, almost every family group has their data out with exception of Brouwer and Bauer, both of which will come out later today. I'm sorry everyone, but it's 2:45a.m. and I'm getting a little ditzy here. I NEED SLEEP!!! :) Please everyone, remember -- the data of Germans to America was very graciously submitted by Glenn Geisheimer <[email protected]>, **NOT ME** even though my name is on all the messages. All I did was get the data out to everyone. Glenn is who we all need to very heavily thank for this. ... and we do Glenn, very much. :) DO NOT DELETE the header message to the Germans to America messages or keep this one so you'll know who to refer back to regarding more data or to give thanks to. If anyone should break down their walls because of the First 'B' Immigrants messages, please share your happiness with everyone. We'd love to know! Good night, cousins. Happy dreams! ... I'll be joining you in just a few. And Glenn, thank you so, so much for all this wonderful information you're sharing with us! Colleen
