Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead>, or you can use our shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/Homestead>. We also have a newly opened sister site, the Bower Cottage, that we've begun to fill. There are currently only a few names there, but give us time... :) The Cottage is at <http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowercottage>, or you can use the shortcut URL of <http://embark.to/bowercottage>. WE HAVE A DOMAIN!!!! :) YES!!! We have a new home, and a permanent one at that! What's more ... IT'S ALL OURS!!! YIPPEE!!!! (clap clap clap jumpa jumpa jumpa) I spent every day last week researching this domain business and finding a webhost. On Friday morning I signed us up for a domain and our name. On Saturday I finalized the registrations processing. We are now unequivocally, undeniably, completely and totally ... bowercommunity.com ...or, bowercommunity.org ...or, bowercommunity.net!! First off, how we became "Bower Community" ~~ All the people that responded to the Coffee last week were given the opportunity to vote for our domain name. Since this is a family effort, I did not decide the name myself, but allowed those voting cousins to make the decision. I found a webhost that gives us 200 MBs of space, 24/7 tech support (of which I have already abundantly used!), no monthly fees, and unlimited e-mail accounts (those e-mail accounts are a bonus I wasn't looking for; more on this later). The cost: $200 = domain registration and set up (a one-time fee) 10 = .net registration (I'll explain this below) 10 = .org registration (again, below) --- $220 outlay for bowercommunity.com/.net/.org Annual fees will be: $35 = annual fee 10 = annual fee for .net registration 10 = annual fee for .org registration -- $55 annually for bowercommunity.com/.net/.org RE: The .net and .org ~~ I registered for bowercommunity.net and bowercommunity.org so nobody else could use those names and cause us to lose traffic with surfers trying to reach us and get someone else instead. Not only was I guiding surfers to us with .net and .org, but also any inline cousins! Anytime someone gets confused as to whether bowercommunity is .com, .net or .org they'll still reach us. RE: The unlimited e-mail accounts ~~ just like a lot of us have accounts with Hotmail, Netscape, Excite, etc., so we can do the same thing with our domain. I don't know how this works yet, but once I get our sites back online and everything working correctly I'll do a quick study and let you all know. RE: Domain support ~~ please understand straight off ... NOBODY is REQUIRED to help support this effort. It is all voluntary and in no way will you be prevented from using the Homestead, the Cottage or any other site, page, etc. we may set up at Bower Community. There are cousins who have offered to help offset my expenses for our new home. However, if you would also like to contribute to this effort I will very humbly and gratefully accept any donations: Colleen Pustola P.O. Box 13154 Fort Carson, Colorado 80913 IF the donations exceed the $220 I have paid out, I will roll those extra funds over to take care of our annual fees. I will NOT retain any of the funds for myself, but keep it all within the family to pay for our home. I'll discuss more about this in another Coffee. If you'll click on the following link you'll be taken to our new home. However, there is nothing on the page except a small "we're moving in" paragraph. Still, you might want to have a look ... You can reach us two ways: <http://www.bowercommunity.com> or, <http://bowercommunity.com> (notice the www is missing in the second URL?) ... and of course, you can also use <http://bowercommunity.net> or <http://bowercommunity.org>. Those cousins that were in the family at the beginning of this year know what's in store for me now ... transferring all the files out of Crosswinds and into our domain. Since I'm not having to fight for an FTP port like I had to at Crosswinds, I hope to have all the files moved over in the next couple days. Once I've moved everything, the Homestead and Cottage will have to have all the links checked. Every page will have to be opened, and every hyperlink clicked on. Cousin Gloria Motter <[email protected]> has very graciously volunteered to do this, but she can't do it alone. Will some of you come together as a team and help her out? Please e-mail me or Gloria if you have the time to spare. WHOPBOF YEARLY COMPETITION Okay cousins, it's coming up fast. The dates were moved up two days from what I told you last week. The competition starts on December 7th and ends on Saturday, the 9th. Voting day will be on Wednesday, December 6th. As before, I'll explain more on this voting as the time draws closer. Once I get us moved I'll start working on the Homestead's front page for the competition. Cousin Ron Myers came up with a brilliant idea for the porch light that I'm going to have to learn how to do. If we have any web techs or designers in the family who know how to apply onMouseOver or how to set up a voice recording, please contact me. I'll need your help. Does anyone have any other ideas or changes they would like to see happen at the Homestead, particularly in time for the competition? If so, please let me know right away. MORE CROSSWINDS WOES On October 12th, Crosswinds announced they were having to break one of their front-page promises of not forcing anyone to use banners on their sites. So, for the time we're still at Crosswinds, whenever you visit the Homestead or Cottage, you should expect those large annoying pop-up banners on every single page. It seems Crosswinds wasn't generating enough revenue to meet their hardware expenses and make vitally necessary upgrades. They also say they are fighting to stay alive now. Cousins, I think we're getting out at a good time. GENWEB.NET HACKED Do you know of any sites at <http://www.genweb.net> or possibly belong to any of their lists? Have you been having trouble accessing the genweb.net site this week? If so, you're not alone. Sometime last weekend genweb.net was hacked, shutting down the entire server. I know there are a few US GenWeb sites at genweb.net as well as a host of other sites who are now also offline. The thousands of e-mail lists had to be rerouted. At last word, Randy Haight, the owner of genweb.net wasn't sure whether or not he'd be able to put it back online. Family ... it's what we're all about ... and this week our family became its own presence on the World Wide Web! :) We're making memories, cousins, and we're doing it TOGETHER! I so enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

MYFAMILY.COM VS ANCESTRY.COM VS ROOTSWEB.COM What I'm about to tell you here is going to sound red-flag-waving at best. I am not permitted to give you the name of the person who alerted me as he/she had a harddrive crash and lost all the proof to verify his/her story. However, the gravity of the situation prompts me to tell you so that you can deal with it as you feel needs to be done. Keep in mind cousins that what I'm about to tell you, without ability to prove this, is tantamount to hearsay. However, the recurrence of incidents involving one of the Web's widely-used genealogy sites is primarily what causes me to pass this along as I know it (please note the quotes. They are extracted from the writer's message and are not mine): Earlier this week I received a private e-mail from yet another person who found his/her entire family posted on <Ancestry.com> without permission. According to this person, Ancestry.com had "hi-jacked the information from my web page on Myfamily.com ... which also had ancestors' pictures." The material was also posted on Familytreemaker.com and was also being sold on CD's. "I was told that I had given them permission by uploading this to my web page" (at MyFamily.com), he/she wrote. The message-writer told me the ancestors pictures were entered in a Family Photo contest on Myfamily.com and her entire site's data then turned up listed at an Ancestry.com data base. Replies from messages to MyFamily.com and Ancestry.com regarding the situation said that when he/she entered the pictures in the contest "I had given them permission to distribute them," relayed the writer. The person contacted LDS in Salt Lake "because they were the only ones who had my entire family tree. They [LDS] checked for me and found how it had been done. I did notice the CD's were no longer advertised after several heated e-mail discussions." There you have it, cousins. In light of these allegations, and with so many other people having basically the same problem, I am once again concerned. Are you aware that MyFamily.com owns Ancestry.com and Familytreemaker.com ... and now they also own Rootsweb.com as well? While occasional errors will happen, there are too many occurrences popping up now that cause me to take immediate notice. As with our genealogy, the circumstantial evidence weighed with the factual evidence, begins to build a story; and I'm afraid I don't particularly like what I'm beginning to see as an ending. My concern here lies in the fact that quite a few cousins have been adding a great deal of material to the Retreat at <MyFamily.com>. At least one of the cousins participating there has added her ancestor's pictures to MyFamily.com's Family Photo contest. If this latest alert is well-founded, all the material at the Retreat is now compromised. (You all know how I feel about protecting your/my/our material.) The Retreat coordinator, Vicky Bowers-Gielau, is aware of the situation and has been contacting those cousins who have data there. The Retreat admins will meet there tonight to discuss this situation with the possibility of moving the Retreat to a non-genealogy environment. New memberships to the Retreat are temporarily suspended pending the outcome of this discussion. CROSSWINDS WOES When was the last time you stopped in at the Homestead or Cottage? Did you have problems accessing the site(s)? Did you get in only to find graphics and pages not loading? You're not alone. For the past 2-1/2 months I've been faced with the same thing. I really don't understand what's going on as I've loaded some of the pages and graphics three and four times. This has become a weekly occurrence. I've written to Crosswinds to find out if they're having problems at their end, and "no," they aren't or "we've made the repairs, everything should be okay now." Yet, I continually find things missing. I've received messages from a number of you saying graphics were missing. "What happened to my Bauer/Brower/Bowers data? Did you take it down?" "State pages from the Millenium Project are missing...." "When I click on this link, I get taken to a 'not found' page." (Let me assure all of you ... your material is there, the graphics are there ... all the pages are there!) I found out this week that another cousin who has a site at Crosswinds is experiencing the same problems. Of major concern to me is the fact that pages continually don't show. It isn't always the same pages that are missing, either. If pages won't open, that means your/our/my material isn't being seen by our visitors, and THAT is what bothers me the most. A couple times the house on our front page didn't load. How do new visitors get in if the house isn't there???? My next concern is the final leg of our site fight competition which runs December 7th - 11th -- the start just under two months away now. We definitely need to do something here if we're going to remain in it. All our pages and graphics MUST show up that week. Once the competition week starts I will not be allowed to touch the site at all under penalty of disqualification. And finally, the file manager. It took me two days to upload the GEDCOM update this week simply because I couldn't access the file manager and, once in, was locked out again. Saturday I had about 30 files to upload to the Cottage and again, was blocked from entry. This entire situation is quickly passing the point of frustration and moving on to flat-out dread. So, I've come up with a couple ideas. As before, this is a family issue* and I bring it to you before I do anything. *(New cousins in the last six months please see below the following list for an explanation of this.) 1. I can leave everything as is, continuing to reinstall the pages/graphics and we can cross our fingers the week of the competition that everything will show up. 2. I can leave the site at Crosswinds, however, reopen the Geocities site for the competition only. 3. I can move the site again, this time to a free site at Rootsweb. However, there we'll have those miserable banners across the top of every page. Frankly, given the alert above, where Rootsweb was my first choice it is now my last. If Rootsweb falls into the pits of having material taken from them, I'll have no way to protect all the data. 4. Open our own domain. This was one of my plans for the year anyway, but I'd cast it aside as being an expense I can't shoulder alone unless I can find a good web-host that won't suck my checkbook dry! :) If we decide on this option, will 200 MGs of space be enough? *This is a family issue because many of you have material housed at the Homestead. I will not arbitrarily move our home and your/my/our data around the Web without us discussing it first. You have as much a vested interest in the Homestead's cyberspace placement as I do. If you have other ideas I'm certainly open to them. But, whatever we decide here, we need to decide it quickly. The holidays are coming and you KNOW what THAT means! :) Also, if I move our home, I still need to get our front page ready for the competition. Moving the Homestead will also mean moving the Cottage. So, we're faced with another decision. What to do? I need to know NOW how you all feel about this. If you decide to discuss it openly in the family please be sure to use the CHAT: forum to do so. Use the subject line CHAT: CROSSWINDS WOES. As always, you're welcome to e-mail your opinions to me privately at <[email protected]>. Family ... it's what we're all about. My coffee cup is empty again. I really enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'
Hi cousins, The October GEDCOM update is now online with 3,823 individual entries and 1,536 marriages ... a growth of nearly 300 people! I'm sorry to report though, that there are no Baur, Brower or Brouwer entries in this update. :( Also, I had to delete over 600 entries because of living persons in the GEDCOMs; I think I caught them all. These deletions shouldn't have caused breaks in anyone's lines. The next update is scheduled for February. I'll be calling for your GEDCOMs again in mid-January or so. I had a problem this time with uploading the files as Crosswinds has been inaccessible off and on again. This concerns me a great deal. I'll be discussing this in this Sunday's Coffee, so I hope you'll all read this next issue of the Coffee as the family has yet another decision to make ... and it may have to be made quickly, depending on what we decide. But for today, enjoy! :) I wish you all a fantastically, fabulous Friday! :) Colleen P.S. I also should mention that somebody forgot to send autumn to Colorado! I'm sitting here in 30 degree temps today! :) Bundle up everyone ~ I'm sending this cold front on to everyone ... you KNOW how I love to share! :)

Hello!!! I just come across some interesting information that I think might have a connection to my Bowers Family. Johnathon Bowers was married to Hannah Barrett on May 7, 1699 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts (Middlesex County). They had a son William Bowers born Jan 7, 1709 in either Chelmsford/Lexinton, Massachusetts (Middlesex County). William Bowers married Martha Winship in 1741 in Billerica, Massachusetts (Middlesex County). They had a son named Samuel Bowers born June 3, 1754 in Billerica, Massachusetts (Middlesex County). William Bowers died September 16, 1799. (This information was found on Family Search LDS Site) Now my question is does anyone know who these people are?? In my family I have a Samuel Bowers born June 3, 1754. According to my cousin DAR application Samuel was born in Pennsylvania. I know he lived in Philadelphia, Penn during the Revolution War because he was in it. Samuel Bowers married Mary Sutter on April 18, 1790 in St. Pauls Church in Philadelphia, Penn. They had 4 known children, Mary born 1791, William born 1795 (Twin), George born 1795 (Twin, and my line) and Samuel born between 1794-1797. Could this be same family connected to the Massachusetts Family. I sure would appreciate any input anyone would have to determine if it is the same family. Mike

VIRTUAL LECTURING, AN INNOVATIVE STEP ON THE WEB An innovative idea has come to the Web. On Friday night I participated in cyberspace's first-ever, virtual genealogical lecture which was held at <http://www.genealogy.about.com>. It was a beta-test sponsored by the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania and the topic was "Life in Mid-18th Century Pennsylvania." The guest speaker was John Humphrey, a nationally known genealogist. He posted his lecture on the Web and followed it a week later by an "event chat" in which John answered questions one at a time from individuals logged-on across the world. I missed the first hour and 15 minutes because of timezone differences (it started at 6 p.m. Mountain time - our dinner hour), however, what I did catch was enough to whet my whistle for more! I was taking notes fast and feverishly that night so I could tell all of you about it, however Kimberly Powell, about.com's genealogy webmistress has put the entire transcript of the evening online so I'll just pass the link along where you can read it for yourselves. To read John's lecture (which is very interesting and informative) go to <http://genealogy.about.com/hobbies/genealogy/library/authors/uchumphreya.htm>. The transcript is at <http://genealogy.about.com/hobbies/genealogy/library/blchattrans4.htm>. While not all of us have lines extending from Pennsylvania, just the read alone is fascinating and one can easily visualize from John's lecture a good part of our U.S. immigrant ancestors' lives. This is definitely a want-to-read for everyone! :) ARE YOU A NEWBIE ... NEW TO GENEALOGY? I've received at least nine messages in the last two weeks from cousins new to genealogy apologizing for how little they know or to please excuse them if they've done something wrong in posting. If you're rather new to genealogy, computers and/or computing genealogy then this next section is just for you ... I already know (because you've told me) that some of you have been yelled at (called flaming) or ridiculed by people on other lists and now, are afraid to post here, too. I want to tell all of you that life runs a LOT differently here than it does on many of your other lists. You do NOT have to worry about being humiliated here! WE ARE A FAMILY here ~ cousins who treat each other with respect and dignity. We are a caring lot and we share our information across the board. We HELP our newbies; we will NOT criticize you if you foul up (I do it all the time!), but will gently help you toward the correction ~ whether it be your own data (a transposed date, for example), your procedures and/or methodology. You newbies are vitally important to the family and whether you realize it or not, it's true. You may not be experienced in the "how-to" aspect of genealogical research or list netiquette, but you bring valuable information into the group by way of your lineages, even if that knowledge goes no further than your grandparents or great-grandparents. Those ancestors could very well be another cousin's great aunt or uncle they've been searching for or, even better, could be their (heretofore unknown) great-grandparents, too! Additionally, ANY little scrap of information offered to the family is valuable. Even scraps, once pulled together, will help create a family's quilt of ancestry. That's another reason why you newbies are so important. You tend to provide many of those tiny bits of family data that a lot of us long-time researchers haven't been able to locate in records. ["Oh this? It was just a page Grannie wrote up and stuck in her Bible ~ nothing important, really." Looking at it I see a handwritten paper showing the immigrant family that came from England, and I sit there dumbfounded!] So you see, tender newbie, you ARE important to the family and we desperately need you to not give up or be afraid to say anything. Remain with us, read the way messages are formatted by everyone else, and do the same thing! The ONLY two things you need to remember are: 1.) In the first line of your message, tell us you're a newbie so we can give you special attention; and 2.) Never post information about living relatives. This is for their protection against identity thieves. There is not a single cousin here who will "dump" on you ~ criticize you, put you down for your lack of knowledge, ridicule you ... or do any other hatefully negative thing you might think can/will happen here. Family takes care of family, and we take care of our newbies, our novices, and each other. Criticism is always constructive and gentle. And, in case you're wondering ... the penalty for flaming in the family is immediate removal. PLEASE, dear newbie, take that first step and try the waters. Send in your posts and let us know who you are and who you're looking for. You won't be able to trust us until you take that initial leap. After all, we're family ... and that's what we're all about. To those cousins with October birthdays, the family and I wish you a very happy and special day. You are loved!! :) My cup runs empty one more time. I so enjoyed this time with each of you. Before I end for this week, may I share a link with you that was sent to me last night? Please share the majestic beauty of fall with me at <http://www.link4u.com/colors.htm>. I wish you all a week filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all ... filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

Hi friends, Does anyone have a Rachel Bowers b. 1828, d. 1898, m. Madison Vandaveer? I know the Vandaveers were from New York, so she may have been living there when she was m., but don't know where she was born. This is all the info we have on her, unfortunately. Thanks for checking, Laurie

( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ According to my calendar we're supposed to be nearing the end of summer, right? It's just September 24th and outside my window is a winter wonderland! Yes cousins, you read it right ... snow! ... about 2 inches worth right now and more is coming down as I write this. I think the weatherman forgot that it isn't time for the holidays with these somber gray skies and all this pristine white. It's all beautiful, but I'm no longer in Germany so whoever ordered this up can have it back! :) Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Last call for GEDCOMs 3. Oh, those hidden records! If you've been with the family for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraph TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur/Bro[u]wer lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bau[e]r/Bro[u]wer lines or any of the 81+ variant spellings that might help someone, please feel free to post it. LAST CALL FOR GEDCOMs The deadline for our October update of the Cottage's GEDCOM project is Wednesday, September 27th. Have you sent yours to me yet? If not, you should know that the next update won't be until February, 2001. OH, THOSE HIDDEN RECORDS! Have you noticed the brief messages coming out on the list with mention of records that someone came across or just happened to have buried in their material? Those "hidden records" are just what we need! The tiny one-liners carry clues for someone's research that, though you may not feel are important, can be _the_ big break that one of your cousins are looking for. They do nobody any good hidden in a shoebox or binder and buried under the bed. Please, if you are 'harboring' hidden records, post them before all the family. Even a one- or two-liner message with a birth, death or marriage is very welcome here. Family ... it's what we're all about. My coffee cup is empty once again. I really enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.' P.S. The sun just popped out! :)

Hi everyone, Again, I'm sending this to all 17 of the discussion groups I coordinate. This is the latest update on Family Discovery.com ... Monday, 18 Sep, I received a message from Gene Olson, the man I spoke of in my last message who is assisting in the investigation of FamilyDiscovery.com. Gene has opened a website <http://gene_olson.tripod.com> for the express purpose of keeping everyone informed of what's happening re: the above. This is a site you will probably want to bookmark just so you can stay abreast. Most of you who have questions will certainly have them answered by visiting Gene's site. I spoke with him yesterday and he told me he'll keep the site updated as new information arrives to him. There, you'll find two toll-free numbers both of which, Gene has told me, you are free to call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, he also said that when the need for sleep arrives, they'll turn the phone ringers off. So, if you don't get an answer, simply try again later. (The second of the two toll-free numbers is connected to an answering machine; the first isn't.) CRITICAL: Physical evidence is desperately needed! If you are a webmaster/mistress whose site has been linked to by Family Discovery, please send Gene an affidavit stating what pages/documents, etc. is being "stolen" from your site, how many hours you invested in extracting the information from the original documents, and give the dollar value of your work (including setting up your pages). The purpose of this is to show the legal authorities the aggregate total of monetary worth Family Discovery is taking from all of you. If you already subscribed to Family Discovery, please do NOT feel so embarrassed that you refuse to say anything. YOU ARE _NOT_ ALONE IN THIS! Many people were taken in by their promotion, and you are just one of a group who now hold vital information to help get this company shut down and prosecuted! You have the physical evidence to prove you were scammed - that proof being a copy of your cancelled check or credit card statement. Did you receive one of the company's promotional emails? If so, you should know that FamilyDiscovery.com doesn't have an ISP like Geocities or Tripod; theirs is a private domain. However, messages of spam abuse, etc. can be forwarded WITH THE HEADERS to their originator of DNS Central <[email protected]>. Since this company already had one private domain and they were removed from it, I figure DNS Central was probably the ones who removed him and will be the same agency to do so again. The idea is to get enough messages to DNS Central that they have to keep moving that company - that sooner or later someone will get the message there and block him from service. Gene's site will have instructions online on how to send your message WITH THE HEADERS on it. This investigation cannot go forward unless we, as the genealogical community, come together and assist in this effort and help Gene. He told me he's received calls from all over, that people ARE helping. The idea now is not to let the ball slow down, but keep it going full force. We CAN do this if we all work together as one voice. But that physical proof has GOT to come forward. ...And, in case you're interested, Gene has a rear-shot photo of Elias Abodeeley on his website. If you can't believe all this is happening, I think you're going to be even more non-plussed once you see the picture and read the caption beneath. With Gene opening his pages, this will probably be my last update message to all of you unless something radical breaks loose. Otherwise, it's on to genealogy! :) If you wish to forward this message and/or my warning message of Monday, 17 Sep ... consider this my permission to do so for both. Colleen Pustola [email protected]
Hi cousins, I'm not in the CHAT: format for this message because I need to make sure everyone reads this. FamilyDiscovery.com has resurfaced at a new address and is back in operation at a new URL again. Several of the members on the 16 lists I coordinate have already been scammed by this company. WARNING: IF YOU GET A MESSAGE FROM FAMILYDISCOVERY.COM, PLEASE HEED THIS ~~ _DO NOT_ SUBSCRIBE TO THEM!!! They are most DEFINITELY defrauding people and will only take your money! If you are one of the unfortunate cousins who have already subscribed please contact me as I have more information for you. If you are a webmaster/mistress with here-to-fore unpublished genealogy data on your site and you did NOT give FamilyDiscovery.com permission to use your material, please contact me. Hi everyone, I'm doing a separate message on this today since not everyone participates in the Coffees. Last week I notified everyone through the Coffee that it's time to submit your GEDCOMs for the Cottage's October update. I received only one last week. If you've sent a GEDCOM in already and would like me to use the same one again, please let me know at <[email protected]>. If you're submitting an update, please let me know that so I can remove your last one. If you're new to the family and would like to submit a GEDCOM, you should know there are two requirements: 1. Your GEDCOM can be as long or short as you wish, but it must be primarily about Bower[s], Bau[e], Bro[u]wer, or any of our researched variant spellings. (Spouse's lines - include only them and their parents). 2. Absolutely NO living people. The next scheduled update won't be until February, 2001. If you wish to participate in this update, please send your GEDCOMs in to me this week as I'll need time to rebuild our project and get it online. I hope you all have a super, sunny Sunday! :) Colleen

FAMILYDISCOVERY.COM In case you're new or have forgotten, familydiscovery.com was a Website that offered all kinds of records that look great when you first see them. What subscribers (and the rest of the unsuspecting public) didn't know was that the webmaster was using shrink-wrapped (hidden) frames, making it appear that the pages a viewer was reading were on his site and not someone else's. In fact, the opposite was true. He was linking to other sites, especially US GenWeb Project sites, and charging a "special rate" and "one-time access fee" of $49.95 for free material. An update: At last word, familydiscovery.com has since been closed down and is now under investigation by legal authorities. I received a message a couple days ago from a Mr. Gene Olson who is privately investigating familydiscovery. If you have had any involvement with this company - specifically, if you have paid money to them or have had your sites linked to by familydiscovery, he would like to hear from you. Please contact me at <[email protected]> for a copy of his message. A NEW THOUGHT I've been going back over many, many of the messages in our archives at Rootsweb and something occurred to me. I was able to see where over half of us have gone in circles and more circles on finding our lines. We have spent years searching, yet we are still right where we were when we first started. Sounds defeating, doesn't it? One thing I noticed nobody doing though, including me. We submit one query after another, many of us either giving the same information or adding a few new pieces here and there ... still with the same results ~ nothing. It's time for yet another tack ... Do you know where you lines came from? If so, have you queried the family to see if anyone is researching in the same state as you? If all Bower[s]/Bau[e]r/Bro[u]wer researchers from (for example) South Carolina were to start talking with each other, chances are that new information will begin to come out and with that, a possible connection. A small idea that could very well bring a few bingos ... Family ... it's what we're all about. My coffee cup is empty for this week. I really enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'
