The following information was extracted from his Revolutionary War pension file ~~ Joel BOWER[S] was born 20 Feb 1763 in Southampton, Hampshire, England. He was the son of Phine[h]as BOWER[S]. He immigrated to New York about 1768 with his father. If other family members were with them, I don't know. Phine[h]as and Joel lived on Long Island, and at the beginning of the American Revolution, moved to Orange County, NY. Following the War, they moved to Elmira, then Havana in [now] Schuyler County. By 1812 Joel was settling in Ontario Co, NY. That same year he was taken prisoner near Niagara by the British. He was held at the prison in York for "more than two years." If records are available, I don't know... About 1832 Joel settled in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. He was in Indiana in 1839, but returned to Pickering that year. Joel was destitute, "with nothing but a bed of straw to lay upon, without food to subsist upon only as he is supplyed by the hand of charity....a perfect cripple unable to get 1/2 a mile from his humble cot." I can't find Joel's whereabouts in Indiana, nor have I been able to find anything about him in Ontario, Canada. I'd like to find out more about him, when he died, where he is buried, and whether or not he had a family in Indiana or Canada. Thanks for any help. Hi cousins, The BOWER-L began a roll call today. Yours will not start till later this week as I'm trying to keep the traffic down for everyone, so PLEASE do NOT post roll call messages yet. Your part in this one right now is just to receive. I'll be crossposting messages from the BOWER-L to you so you won't miss out on any data with your surname spelling. Likewise, when it comes time for your roll call I'll post your messages over to the BOWER-L where we have all the spellings. I just need this largest research group to finish theirs first before having you hold yours. I'll send a message out the day your roll call begins. In the meantime, you'll start seeing crossposted messages starting directly after this message if anyone has posted a query with your surname spelling. Let's see if we can make some bingos from all four groups! I hope this finds you all having a super Sunday! :) Colleen (who is currently being snowed on in Colorado)

We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur ancestors or any of the 81+ variant spellings we research that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. Our home is Bower Community, located at <http://bowercommunity.com>. There, we currently have two sites: The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our main homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://www.bowercommunity/homestead>. Smaller and just opened this year, our sister site, the Bower Cottage, houses most of our projects including an online GEDCOM fed by quite a few cousins from our lists. The Cottage is still small as far as material goes, however give us time and we'll have it filled really soon. The Cottage is at <http://www.bowercommunity/cottage>. GENWEB.NET BACK ONLINE Like the phoenix rising from the ashes, Randy Haight brought his hacked domain back online only last night. After a quick look around, it appears everything and everyone is still intact, however it _was_ just a cursory look so don't rely heavily on what I just said. Many of the genweb sites, not knowing whether or not Randy would be able to recover the material, moved their sites to other hosts. If you're new ~ Randy Haight is webmaster of <http://www.genweb.net>, a site which hosts hundreds of free genealogy and history Websites as well as thousands of genealogy lists. His domain was hacked into sometime during the weekend of 7/8 October and it's been offline since that time. I have no idea whether or not the hackers were caught. BOWER COMMUNITY UPDATE With exception of a few wayward files, our home is completely online! YIPPEE!!! We're moved in, we're settled, and any dust bunnies you find laying around are ours ... ALL OURS!!! <g> Has anyone noticed how much faster the pages are loading? It's the ultimate in fantastic that not only is everything showing up like it should, but it's showing up QUICKER! We owe special, special thanks to Gloria Motter <[email protected]> and her team of link checkers ~ Lureigne Gimay <[email protected]> and Lynda Boone <[email protected]>. Together they checked every link on every page at the Homestead and Cottage, finding quite a few dead links and helping me to get us updated and corrected. This is not the most fun job in the world, but it IS a critically important one to make sure we not only connect to everyone (and ourselves) correctly, but to root out those pages that are no longer existent. I thank you so very much ladies. Without your help our sites would still be in the 'moving-in' stage. I still have quite a bit of work left to do with our sites, however my priorities are now shifted. With the WHOPBOF competition just around the corner (starting December 5th) for the Homestead, it's imperative that I concentrate all my time on that effort. However, you can help me a lot, please, by notifying me immediately if you should find any broken graphics or links, or pages not loading there. Our last competition was tough, but this next one will be even worse because this time we compete against all the quarter finals winners for this year. COLLEEN'S CHATTER It's been a long time since I sent a few personal lines in to everyone ... but I wanted to share with you the consummate and majestic beauty of the snowed caps of Pikes Peak I see out my living room window every day. For four days this past week the Peak was enshrouded in gray blankets of clouds, reappearing here and there for a few moments to show us the splendor of her new winter coat of snow. I am always inspired by the solitude and serenity of a heavily-clouded winter morning, knowing that all too soon I'll be wrapped in comforters here at my computer with a heating pad warming my frozen toes! But, I find the beauty of winter surpassed only by the colors of fall. We're supposed to have snow from today until Tuesday. Does anyone have a snowplow I can borrow? :) And as we prepare to enter our season of holidays and 'hibernation', I end this Coffee with ... Happy birthday to all our November babies! The family and I send special greetings that your coming year is filled with health and enjoyment. You are loved! Family ... it's what we're all about ... I so enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.' P.S. Over time they acquired a large number of siblings that had been placed in homes through out the state. Most of the boys at one time or another worked for my dad so I got to know the family alittle. Now the youngest has asked me to help him find his "family". Andy is the youngest of them all and remembers some, but his older brother added to this what he knew. I have sent letters out to the others to see what they can remember. I know it is along shot but I couldn't say no so here goes. His mother was Edna May Bowers and he thinks she was from around Spencer WV. She married a Ellington who they think was born in Ohio and died around 1974-1975 (the oldest brother was in the service at the time so we know a approximate date) After the Ellington died she married a Charles Bailey of the Spencer area. He said he remembers his grandparents names were Peter & Ellen Purcell of Moundsville WV. He believes Bertha died in Ellenville NY and she had a sister named Carrie. You have to realize I am working of a memory of a 7 year old. While I research the "Bauer" line I am not up on the Bower's in the area. Any help is appreciated. Oh yeah Andy is either 40 or close to it. I forgot to ask his age and since I am doing this by snail mail I thought I would post with what I have. Thanks, Merry Ann ==== BOWER Mailing List ==== The Bower Family Homestead, homesite of the Bower mailing list -- http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerhomestead
Hi Merry Ann and family, Your idea is really a good one! It parallels the Continuum (a.k.a. the states/country project) we are currently trying to build. You've also pointed out just how much Bower/Bauer, etc. data we all stand a chance to miss out on simply because these individual sites aren't always picked up on the first several pages of a search engine's results. The Continuum was established to bring those sites together in one page. If anyone is interested in hosting a Continuum site, please let me know as we'd like to open sites for all 50 states and the 19 countries our surnames are found in. Currently hosted states are California, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. We also have one country, Australia, hosted. You can visit most of these sites (some are still in the construction phase) by going to the Cottage. Continuum sites can be nothing more than a page of links or a site filled with data; it's the host's choice. The point is to get all those private Bower[s]/Bauer[s]/Baur[s], etc. sites listed under one "roof." If we can get the Continuum up and fully functioning, this project can only help to benefit all of us, especially our newbies. I hope this finds each of you having a fun-filled, FANTASTIC Friday! :) Colleen Merry Ann Simmons wrote: > > Just a thought. My dear cousins, May I now present the keys to our new home? :) WE'RE HERE!!! WE'VE ARRIVED!!! CYBERSPACE ... LOOK OUT!!!!! :) Key 1: to the entire domain http://bowercommunity.com This key is THE front door to the whole site. Right now it's only the single page. From here you can access both sites and any others we decide to build. Key 2: takes you directly to the Homestead without having to go through the front page http://bowercommunity.com/homestead Key 3: takes you directly to the Cottage without having to go through the front page http://bowercommunity.com/cottage I'll begin closing down our Crosswinds sites today, so don't lose the keys! <g> (Of course, I'll have a redirect page at Crosswinds so you won't get lost.....) I hope you're all having a terrifically, wonderful and magical Monday! I know I am! :) Colleen
) ( ) Good Morning Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Bower Community Update If you've been with the family for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraph TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur/Bro[u]wer lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bau[e]r/Bro[u]wer lines or any of the 81+ variant spellings that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. It's here that I normally tell all you new cousins about our primary home, Bower Family Homestead, and our 'vacation' spot, Bower Cottage. But, not today. We're moving to our own domain. As soon as we're set up, I'll post the new URL for everyone to see. I think you're going to be quite impressed with all the information we have waiting for you. BOWER COMMUNITY UPDATE I have to say first, that I am incredibly astounded by all the support so many of you have shown me. Contributions and words of encouragement and excitement were still coming in as of yesterday when my husband picked up the mail. Many of you are as excited by this new event in our online family as I am! ....OUR OWN HOME! CAN YOU JUST BELIEVE IT??? :) Enough! ... before I go off on another one of my tangents! :) This next part will sound vague and for that, I'm sorry. However, all our Coffees are publicly archived (as are all our messages) and I don't wish to put names and dollar amounts out on the Web. I do want to tell you all that this week a total of $200 in contributions came in. I know of one other contribution that is currently in the mail. It will finish paying the set-up fees with $10 left that I will roll over to next year's annual fees. Any other contributions in the mail that I'm not aware of will also be rolled over to next year. Your incredible support, generosity and quick rallying have just left me in awe. Thank you all for believing in me ... in the family ... in US! Also thanks to an inordinate amount of help from Gloria Motter <[email protected]> and two cousins whose names I don't have yet, the Homestead is not only already moved but has had all its links checked. The Cottage is also moved, but I'm holding off opening our domain until those links are checked as well. We should be having our official housewarming today or tomorrow! (yes, already!) It's no small task to check every link in our two sites, cousins. This job is extremely important because it ensures the pages will flow one after another as our visitors and we expect when a link is clicked on. It also verifies those pages are even onsite with all their graphics. We owe Gloria and her team a HUGE "THANK YOU, SO MUCH!" She and her team saved me a good week's worth of work, enabling us to open our doors much sooner than I anticipated. So, look for a message from me later on today or tomorrow with THE BIG NEWS ... the KEYS! <g> Family ... it's what we're all about ... I so enjoyed this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

William Penn came to the rescue, and offered them all asylum, passage and land on credit, all that was required was they renounce the pope & swear allegiance to the King...
