Resent-Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 07:59:48 -0800 Resent-From: [email protected] Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 08:57:32 -0700 From: Merry Ann Simmons <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Ok I am asking a big favor to all my Bower researchers. I live in Mesa AZ and have a family friend who was kind enough to drive my mother from WV to AZ (she refuses to fly). He is 40 years old and asked for my assistance in finding his family. Believe me in all my years of genealogy I have never seen such a mess. He was raised in the foster care system of WV since the age of 2. Had numerous foster families until finally all he and five other siblings were placed in one household. He knows very little to go by. His mothers name on his birth certificate says Edna May Bowers. I have not seen this certificate so I do not know if May is Mae in the spelling. Said he remembers seeing his grandmother before she died in 1991 and her name was Bertha Purcell. Thought her husbands name was Peter. They lived in Ellenville NY. I am assuming that the grandmother must have remarried since Edna's name is Bowers but you know the old saying about assuming!!! Bertha died 11-25-91, found that on SSDI. Edna married a Ellington, we believe his name to be Richard. Had four children. My friend was the fifth but he says his father was Charles Bailey from around the Moundsville area. Can not find any info on him in death records. She had two children by him. They social services apparently placed them in foster care. He was told because of her health but she went on to have 2 more children by another man. The youngest would now be 38 and the siblings have not been able to find him. Now for the real kicker. Even though 4 had other fathers then the Ellington, they were all given the Ellington name. I am totally confused on where to go. He has know idea where his mom is buried. They lived in the Wheeling area, but he thinks the Ellington is buried in the Canton Ohio area. He would like to make use of the genealogy library here in Mesa but as you can see we need a starting point. Any help is appreciated. Also does anyone know whether or not he would be able to have access to his state records? Since they were never adopted should they not be sealed? HELP!!! Thanks so much for any leads or directions you can give me, Merry Ann ==== BOWER Mailing List ==== Bower Cottage, sister site to the Bower Family Homestead, homesites of the Bower research group -- http://bowercommunity.com/cottage

    1. [BOWERS] CHAT: [Fwd: FYI]
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, This was just forwarded to me. I thought you might be interested. (hmmm .... wonder who I'll vote for? :) ) I hope this finds you all having a marvelous Monday! :) Colleen Subject: FYI Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2000 14:54:06 -0600 The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2000 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. ============================================================== - Which Site Is the "Best Genealogy Site on the Web?" Who has the best genealogy-related World Wide Web site? Do you have an opinion? If so, you can make your opinion heard in the fourth annual "Best Genealogy Site On The World Wide Web" award. You have the opportunity to honor a genealogy Web site with a "Readers' Choice Award" to be issued by this newsletter. The readers of this newsletter will pick the site to be named "Best Genealogy Site on the World Wide Web." This will be the fourth year that the readers of this newsletter have conferred such an award. I won't mention who won the award previously, as I don't want to influence this year's nominations. However, I will mention them again at the end of this year's elections. What guidelines are used to define the "best genealogy site on the World Wide Web?" That is strictly up to you. You can nominate a site because it is interesting or because it has nice graphics or because it has excellent maps or because it is full of valuable genealogy reference materials. I would suggest that you should nominate a site because it is the one genealogy Web site that you go back and visit, time and time again. However, even that guideline is optional. The choice is yours to make. When you cast your vote, you might write a couple of sentences about why you think this site is best, although that description is not absolutely required. I have set up an "electronic voting machine" that you can use to cast a vote for this "best of the Web" award. I have great confidence in this voting machine; Florida residents will not have to conduct a recount! You can vote at any time from now until midnight Eastern U.S. time on November 30, 2000. The voting machine will then tabulate the results. I will announce the winner in the December 2 newsletter. The winning World Wide Web site will then be allowed to mention the award on their Web site. That Web site also will be entitled to all the fame and notoriety that is included with this Online Genealogy Newsletter's Readers' Choice Award. Enough said! To cast your vote, you must follow these instructions EXACTLY. A computer is tabulating the results, not a human being. Computers are not very good at interpreting what you meant to say; you have to be precise when talking to a computer. You must enter your vote in exactly the proper format. To cast a vote for "Best Genealogy Site on the World Wide Web," send an email to: [email protected] The subject of the message must contain the full Web site address and nothing else. For instance, the message subject might be: http://www.rootscomputing.com The message subject (some e-mail programs will say "Message Title" instead of "subject") MUST start with:http:// Any of the following would be proper message subjects: http://www.ancestry.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/roots/ http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~dsucha/schuetz.html http://ynot.netgrp.net/~tursky/ http://homepages.noplace.com/~jsmith Please list the exact address in the message subject, but do not add any other words. Do not say, "My vote is..." or anything like that in the subject; simply list the actual URL beginning with the letters "http://". None of the following three examples will work: www.xyz.com My vote is for www.xyz.com My favorite Web site is xyz.com None of the three previous examples begin with "http://" and therefore the computer program that tabulates the vote will ignore them. If you do send your vote properly, you will receive a reply acknowledging the receipt of your nomination. You are encouraged to tell why you think your favorite site deserves such an award. You can do so by writing comments in the body of the e-mail. The automatic vote tally software will ignore the body text. However, once the votes are tallied, a human will read all the messages that nominated the winning site and will look for any comments about that site. Some of those comments may be published in the December 2 newsletter. By writing text in the message body, you are giving permission to reprint your name and comments in this newsletter. If you do not want your words or name published, please do not write anything in the message body. If you vote and then later change your mind, simply send in a new vote in exactly the same manner as the first vote. Your new vote will automatically replace the earlier one. In other words, you may vote as often as you like, but only the last vote you send will be counted. All votes must be received on or before November 30, 1999. Any Web site that tries to "stack the deck" by creating a method to have Web visitors automatically send e-mails will be disqualified. Web sites are encouraged to place a link to this newsletter article as published on Ancestry.com or to copy this article in its entirety onto their own Web site. The Web site may suggest that their users read this article and then cast a vote. However, if the Web site's software creates the message for the user, or if the Web site pre-loads a URL into the message subject of the vote, that site will be disqualified. In case of disputes, I reserve the right to make final judgment on the authenticity of any votes. Again, do not send your vote to my e-mail address or to the address that sends this newsletter. You must send your vote to: [email protected] The message subject line must contain the Web site's complete address (URL) and must start with: http:// OK, which site is "the best genealogy site on the Web?" Your vote counts.

    1. [BOWERS] Roll Call: Wallace Frederick Bowers (1875-1962)
    2. H. Dustin Harrison
    3. Wallace Frederick Bowers was born on 31 Jan 1875 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. He died on 17 Mar 1962 in Chandler, Maricopa, Arizona. He married Mary Amanda Drorbaugh on 29 Dec 1901. I am looking for his parents mostly. However, a little tidbit, from what I heard, Wallace F. was a electrican and worked on the Hoover Dam helping them build the large generators. He later owned a business called "Wallace F. Bowers Electric" in Arizona. His parents were supposely Jacob Frederick Bowers and Elizabeth Faller. Jacob was born in Pennsylvania and Elizabeth was born in Toronto Canada. There is not much to go on. I would greatly appreciated if anyone have this information be willing to share it. Wallace F. Bowers and Mary A. Drorbaugh had the following children: Ralph Bowers (b. 1901) Bessie Ruth Bowers (b. 1904) William Jefferson Bowers (b. 1905) Clarence Harry Bowers (b. 1906) Howard Bernard Bowers (b. 1907) Mary Amanda Bowers (b. 1909) baby girl Bowers (b. 1910) Irene Lulu Bowers (b. 1911) << my grandmother Chester Arthur Bowers (b. 1920) Dustin Harrison [email protected]

    1. [BOWERS] FAMILY CHRISTMAS 2000
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi again cousins, Well, the holiday-time-of-year is nearly upon us and once again, it's time to begin thinking about Christmas. I love this upcoming time of year ... the lights, the music, the decorations ... but not the weather! :) Christmas ... I love the surprises of gift giving and the joy those gifts bring; I hope you do, too. Are you new to the family since last December? If so, you're probably wondering what in the world I'm talking about! :) Those of you who joined the family fold this year will, hopefully, be very pleased by this .... Just as I've always said, we are a family ~ directly related or not, we are a family. Families enjoy Christmas together, and so do we. Here's how it works: We're going to have a family Christmas together, complete with a tree and gifts. I'll set it up as a page off the parlor just after Thanksgiving. Since Santa Claus doesn't make his flight until Christmas Eve, gifts won't be available for opening until Christmas Day (but remain online throughout December into early January). Gifts will be new material that we all have stored in our home files or found recently after forays into libraries or archives. If each of you will send me one new list/record to be placed "under" the tree, then the family's Christmas will be a resounding success! We'll all benefit from this, have fun doing it, AND add some of the magic back into our own Christmas holidays. Even more, we'll do it as a family. Gifts can be: * a list of names on (for example) a year's tax records * a biography * 3-4 generations of a family * a couple wills * photographs * a few deeds * a county's/country's obituaries for a given period * immigration/emigration records * copies of certificates (deceased only - no living) * etc. ~~ whatever else you'd like to give the family for Christmas The list does NOT have to be limited to what I've given above; those were just ideas/ suggestions. The point of this is to give a gift to the family and have fun doing it. Gifts should be submitted DIRECTLY TO ME <[email protected]> ~ NOT ON THE LIST. (We need to be good secret-keepers, don't you know! :) ) Deadline for submissions is December 9th as I'll need time to "wrap" everything. Please make your gifts as close to online-ready as you can. Text files are fine, and so are RDF files. Label your message as CHRISTMAS GIFT so I won't miss it in the middle of all the roll calls and I'll know you have that particular message designated as a gift. Questions? Just send an email to me <[email protected]>. Make your subject as RE: CHRISTMAS PRESENTS. I hope each of you will find at least one special gift to give at this, our third Christmas together. It can be an exciting and magical season for all of us ... looking once again at the holidays through child-like eyes. Colleen

( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. WHOPBOF Competition Page 3. A heartfelt apology If you've been with the family for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraph… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur ancestors or any of the 81+ variant spellings we research that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. Our home is Bower Community, located at <http://bowercommunity.com>. There, we currently have two sites: The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our main homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://bowercommunity.com/homestead>. Smaller and just opened this year, our sister site, the Bower Cottage, houses most of our projects including an online GEDCOM fed by quite a few cousins from our lists. The Cottage is still small as far as material goes, however give us time and we'll have it filled really soon. The Cottage is at <http://bowercommunity.com/cottage>. WHOPBOF COMPETITION PAGE I've been working furiously these past three weeks on our competition page and I _think_ I might be nearing its completion. This page has been through no less than 40 revisions, to include a complete change from one look to another. It's now one that I hope will stir your heart, if not your soul. The one problem I'm having is the weight of the page. I'm worried that it's going to be terribly heavy ~ particularly on those of you with older machines. In order for me to find out how much a strain this will be, will a few of you to volunteer as "guinea pigs?" The page shouldn't crash your machines, but may lock them up or take next-to-forever to load. The testers should be using one of the following platforms: MacIntosh Netscape Version 2 or 3 Internet Explorer Version 2 or 3 Lynx or Minyos Webtv If you're willing to allow your machine to be a test subject, please contact me as soon as possible at <[email protected]> ~ letting me know what platform and version you're using, and the size of your monitor. I expect to load our competition page on December 1st or 2nd, giving everyone a chance to see it and let me know if there are any flukes. A second problem I'm having is setting an animated graphic into a picture. I use Micrografx Webtricity and have a small working knowledge of PSP6. If anyone can help get me get straight here, please contact me at <[email protected]>. If I can't get the animation working, we'll just have to go without it. A HEARTFELT APOLOGY To those of you who have written me these past several weeks and haven't received a reply, please forgive me as I really am sorry. I haven't been lazy or neglectful of you, just terribly busy between our competition page and crossposting roll call messages. I WILL respond to your email, but it may still be a while before I do. I have all your messages, and for the next couple weeks if you need to know whether or not I've received your email you may want to request a receipt from me (available to Netscape users only, I think). Family ... it's what we're all about ... Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

This is my current tree. John and Jeremiah are the oldest generation of this line and I'm working to figure out which county in VA they were from (1850 Logan Co., KY census shows Jeremiah born VA). Proof that John is actually Jeremiah's father is circumstantial. Maybe someone might recognize one or more of these generations or the location where they lived. The migration pattern is: Unk Co., VA > Nash Co., NC > Davidson/Wilson Co., TN > Yalobusha/Carroll/Grenada/Montgomery Co., MS / Logan & Todd Co., KY. Descendants of John Bowers Generation No. 1 1. 1. [BOWERS] BOUNCING ROLL CALL MESSAGES
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi family, Since the roll calls started last week, I've been getting a LOT of bouncing messages from you (not YOU specifically, but you as a group! :) ). 1. When you post a message to the cousins, be sure your message is in TEXT FORMAT ONLY. If you try to send it in HTML or MIME, the Rootsweb servers are kicking them out. 2. Rootsweb's servers also do not accept attachments of any kind. Those messages will also bounce out of the system. 3. Be sure your messages to the family are sent under the email address you joined us with. If Rootsweb doesn't recognize your email addy, the message is kicked out and not posted to anybody. So, if you've sent a message to everyone and you haven't seen it come out on the table in front of us all, you can probably figure it was thrown out and should resend it using the proper address or format. Thanks, everyone. I'll 'see' you tomorrow at the Coffee! :) Colleen

    1. [BOWERS] Roll Call: Jacob Bowers (1864 IN--1936 AR)
    2. Carolyn Bowers
    3. Can someone help me before I give up on my husband's Bowers line? I would like to communicate with anyone who has Bowers connections 1870--1880 in KNOX County, IN. Jacob Bowers (March 3, 1864--June 23, 1936) was born in Indiana. He had two full siblings: William (1865--1838) and Emma, born December 25, 1870 in Knox Co. IN and died in 1943 in Daviess Co., IN. Emma married William Bentle in Knox Co. The parents of the three are not known for sure--but Emma's death certificate indicates that her parents were Henry Bowers and Elizabeth Goodman. The mother of the three died before 1880 when census records reveal that Emma was living with the Elias Like family. A Henry Bowers who worked as a field hand was found in Knox County, Indiana in 1880 census records. As teenagers, Jacob and William went to Clay County, AR where they married and reared families. Their father remarried and had a son named George. However, their father had died by the mid-1880's. By 1900, George was also in Arkansas. Some census records indicate that Jacob's father was born in Indiana; others indicate that he was born in Georgia. Jacob married Lucy Forbes and had the following children: J. W., Dan, Fred, Emma, Delcie, Rose, Earl, and Everett. Any help in what seems to be a lost cause will be appreciated. Carolyn Bowers [email protected]

    1. [BOWERS] ROLLCALL: BOWERS, EVALIN
    2. gwilli26
    3. Evalin Bowers and James Cross married abt.1840. They were both born in Va. abt. 1818. One of their sons was James W. Cross born 1847. He probably was born in Va. although some information show in Elizabethton TN. Possibly they lived there after he was born. James W. said that he and his brother(s) and Dad fought in the Civil War, they for the Confederate and he (James W) for the Union. We are looking for any information on Evalin and James. James W. lived in Northern Ky, after the war in the towns of Nicholson, Kenton Co. and Walton, Boone Co. He never returned home after the war. He worked for the railroad and later he had his own Blacksmith shop. He is buried in Walton.
