    3. Hello Neil I found (once upon a time) a SMITH in our ancestry but because it was only on the IGI I didn't pursue it. I think you know that I am descended from Mark BOWERS (father Anthony, Grandfather William) and Sarah MANN. Both came from the Norfolk/Suffolk border areas. As you can imagine coming across a SMITH gave me the horrors and I just dropped the basket. Probably hoping it would go away. The thought of trawling through millions of SMITHs was just too much to bear!!! I have undertaken a DNA test as part of my research which has produced suprising results, I have close matches to a number of SMITHs. There are a number of possible reasons for this; we may be related back before surnames were widely used, or there may have been an adoption, false paternity, or surname change since. In order to help narrow down which/where this happened I could do with contacting another member of my family who is connected to one of my male ancestors who has undertaken a DNA test or who would be willing to take the test. It has to be a male born with the BOWERS surname who is related to my father William born 1906 in Kingston on Thames, my Grandfather James born 1872 in Lewisham, his father Robert born 1840 in Lewisham or his father Edward born 1801 in Suffolk. If anyone fits the bill I would love to hear from you. 3. Hope you have better luck than I have in finding someone who is willing to do the DNA test. I have a similar situation and would like a second DNA test to prove, or disprove, the lineage but the only male I could find with a connection that would be of help did not seem interested, would not even respond on two different occasions but would answer other portions of my notes. This was even though I would pay the entire cost. I think there are many people who fear the DNA test as something intrusive to private information regarding their medical status. My husband's uncle was ready to do it at someone's request on his surname when his daughter got upset and upset him and he changed his mind. We thought her claims ridiculous but at that point, there was no convincing him that it was a good idea. Best of luck, Donna neilrbowers@neilrbowers.plus.com wrote: > Good day fellow Bowers researchers, I wonder if anyone can help me. 3. Nancy, I have no information on Alta Bowers, just this picture with her written on the back. My mother was from San Francisco and they summered at Bartlett Springs. I would assume that all the guests were from that area of California. I am hoping that I can share the picture. The Alta Bowers in the picture had dark hair. I also have some other pictures but there a not names them. I am in the process of changing my e-mail address so until this is done (later in the week) I cannot send the pictures. 3. Here is my direct BOWERS lineage—not totally authenticated, but is a good starting place.  According to my grandmother, her BOWERS family line was Irish not German.  So the connection with the early Christian BOWERS family of VA/WA is questionable at best.  Same for the  BOWERS/SCHINDELDECKER family of PA/MD.   Thanks, PR     !!NEED HELP ON HIS PARENTS!! 3. Emily, James Bowers was a Revolutionary War patriot: NJ Militia. He lived in Montgomery Co., TN. Apparently was born May 28, 1756, Morristown, NJ and d. after March 9,1843, Sumner Co., TN. He also lived in NC but I'm not sure when he arrived there or when he went to TN. I'm not sure what county he was in while living in NC but would like to know since my Bowers were in Nash Co. NC from around the time of the Rev. until about 1796-1800. Mine are in Davidson Co., TN beginning 1796-1800. I am still trying to find where my group was prior to NC....whether VA or NJ...and find it interesting that so many seemed to be in NC and then in TN at about the same time. The dates make one wonder if they all came as a group and whether related or not. I cannot tell you anything about his time in NJ, but I would be interested to know about your group in NJ. Notes I have from others state that James is in Montgomery Co., TN 1820 census with his wife, son James, and daughter Elizabeth. Children were: John b. 1785 NC (1850 census lists John Bowers, age 65, b. NC), d. after 1850 census, Montgomery Co., TN Joseph b. March 1787 NC d. Sept. 23, 1844 in Montgomery Co., TN James b. 1801 in Montgomery Co., TN Elizabeth b. 1803 in TN 1840 Census: James (Rev. Soldier) living with son James in 1840 Males: 1 - Age 30-40 1 - Age 80-90 Listed as age 84/Rev. War Pension Females: 1 - Under 5 1 - Age 20-30 Also, pension papers and other census records for sons show/state James had lived in NC. He is said to have moved to Sumner Co. to live with daughter where he later died. From notes, he served 1776-1780 NJ. The reason I did the DNA test is because there are too many Bowers with same names, similar names in families and all having lived near to each other in several of the same states. I believe I have looked at the records of nearly every Bowers in Middle TN! Like everyone else, I have to research every Bowers in NC and now VA and NJ! Seemed like the DNA test might help narrow things down but we don't have enough in the database yet. See my pages on William Pitt Bowers: http://www.geocities.com/dhinson2000/GenealogyPages.html This is all I have on James. Hope it helps. 3. Hi Nancy, I checked Under the Magnolia Tree (online) and found the name below. Maxwell, husband to Nancy Deans Eason, whom I believe to be the father of Wright Johnson Bowers, would have been born about 1761. It appears the Maxwell below, if this is the one you referred to, was born too late. Wright Johnson Bowers was b. c. 1798. I also checked the Lancaster SC group but didn't see anything that rang a bell. The SC birthplace could be incorrect since they made so many errors. Unfortunately, all my Bowers have been so elusive and it seems to take so much digging to find them...and not very many others appear to be researching my group. My uncle did the DNA test for me. I thought perhaps we might be connected to Giles Bowers of NC since my Bowers lived just across the river from him and all the names were so similar, but alas our DNA isn't the same. Course I (or they) could have an oops somewhere in the line, but I also haven't been able to find much documentation on my group before 1770's either. * HENRY JACKSON MAXWELL5 BOWERS** (JARRETT ANDERSON4, EDWARD D. (NED)3, ANDERSON ANDREW2, JOHN1) was born May 07, 1893 in Lancaster, SC, and died November 06, 1970 in McColl, SC. * I'm so sorry to hear about your mini-stroke and wish you continued improvement. There is nothing worse than dealing with illness. I think doing my genealogy was a big help when I wasn't well. Thank you so much for responding with some tips. Maybe I will find these elusive relatives with everyone's help. 3. Am looking for information on Wright Johnson Bowers who was in AR during 1840 (Hempstead Co.) and 1850 (Sevier Co.). Here are my notes on him: Believe him to be the son of Nancy and Maxwell Bowers who moved to Wilson Co., TN from Nash Co., TN around 1800. This would have been their first son b. about 1798 in NC. Nancy Bowers Will (1815) shows name of son as Right J. Bowers. There is one sister Elizabeth b. NC b. 1799 and another Rachel b. 1801 in SC. The SC is a mystery. Don't know if they stopped there on the way to TN or moved to SC first and then on to TN later. Cannot find whereabouts of Maxwell either. Nancy d. 1815 in Wilson Co., TN. Perhaps she left SC after Maxwell died. Another Bowers mystery! *Wright J. Bowers, along with Allen M. Oakley and James W. Finley, purchased 160 acres of land now in Hempstead Co., AR on March 1, 1843. This was Cash-Sale, Govt Land Ofc. Accession/Serial # AR1180, Document #2455. 1. Re: [BOWERS] Bowers/Bower/Bauer DNA Project
    2. Hi Robert, I am currently a member of the project with an unmatched result. However I have two very close matches for the Y37 test with a SMITH surname in USA (my line has never left the UK as far as I know). As you know I should not be matching that closely with another surname. I am trying to decipher where the anomaly lies and the best way I can think of is to get another branch of the family (an uncle or cousin etc) to take the test and see if we match. If I get my uncle's son to test and we match I know the anomaly lies further back, if not then it is in the last 2 generations. This may take some time as I am not in contact with my father's family. Do you know if it would be possible for me to purchase a kit and get someone else to take the test, and whether I could purchase one in advance at the reduced rate until I find a relative to do the test?
