I have "rescued" an old photograph of Roy, Bessie, Carolyn, and Roy BOWERS Jr. taken at a Studio in Newark, Ohio. The photograph was likely taken in the early 1900's with the couple in their 20's or 30's and the children infant to 4 years old. Someone indicates on the photograph that Roy died and Bessie remarried "Mr. ROSS" who was the father of Melissa ROSS. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding this family: Roy Franklin BOWERS was b. 4 Aug 1883 in Newark, OH to parents Benjamin BOWERS (1859-1910) and Anna ANDERSON (b. 1861). Roy married Bessie Wirt WHITEHEAD (1883-1955). Their son Ray Franklin BOWERS Jr. was b. 1910 and d. 1952. Roy Sr. died 28 Apr 1914 in Newark, OH and is buried along with the other family members in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newark, OH. Bessie Wirt WHITEHEAD b. 15 Jul 1883 was the daughter of Ezekiel Francis WHITEHEAD (1860-1938) and Carrie Kate HOWARD (1863-1899). After the death of Bessie's first husband Roy, she married Edward A. ROSS (1878-1965). The couple had a daughter, Melissa Bernice ROSS (1918-1972), she married into the HULL Family. Carolyn Susanna BOWERS was b. 30 Aug 1906 in OH to Roy and Bessie. Carolyn married Clarence Graham DAVIS (1900-1965 son of A. V. DAVIS and Teresa EMERY) on 8 Feb 1924 in Monroe, MI and together they had three children including, Albert Franklin; Susanna Carolyn; and Billy Graham DAVIS, all born between 1924 and 1928. Census records provide the following details: 1900 census of Newark, OH: Benjamin BOWERS, age 41, born Jan 1 1859, married 17 years, born MD, parents born MD Annie BOWERS, wife, age 38, born Sept 1861, married 17 years, 2 children/2 living, born OH, parents born PA/OH Roy BOWERS, son, age 16, born Aug 1883, born OH, a Day Laborer Ralph BOWERS, son, age 13, born 1886, born OH, a Student 1910 census of Newark, OH: Roy F. BOWERS, age 25, married 5 years, born OH, parents born MD/OH, a Stove Molder Bessie BOWERS, wife, age 25, married 5 years, 2 children/1 living, born OH, parents born OH Carolyn BOWERS, dau, age 3, born OH 1920 census of Newark, OH: Edward ROSS, age 40, born OH, parents born OH, a Retail Dairy Merchant Bessie ROSS, wife, age 35, born OH, parents born OH Charles ROSS, son, age 14, born OH, parents born OH, a Milk Wagon Driver Carolin ROSS, dau, age 13, born OH, parents born OH Iva ROSS, dau, age 13, born OH, parents born OH Roy ROSS, son, age 9, born OH, parents born OH Melissa ROSS, dau, age 1 year + 2 months, born OH, parents born OH I am hoping to locate someone from the family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Donna, Hello! How are you?!It has been awhile since I have heard anything from your research endeavors.Do you have any Winfelders? You said the word hic-upand hmmmmmm........I had a winfelder who had the hic ups for a whole month. Do you have anyone in your family that has weird or interesting disabilities (unique gifts) such as this?Do you have anyone in your family that caz hic ups? I have interesting individuals who live near me with rare and "unique gifts" as I call them. I would be interested if besides DNA info. to discover that a family member had unique gifts this could help in researching the family tree. Yes, I have a copy of the 1850 census for Jeremiah. In NC, can find no records showing parents, relations, etc. He was in NC (Nash Co.) in 1800 when he appears on a court document. There were many Bowers in Nash Co. and many in Norfolk, VA but the documentation is scarce, no wills either. He then went to TN (Sumner & Wilson Co.) and there until about 1837. He appears on the will of John Bowers of Davidson Co., TN who is either a brother or father. Jeremiah married in Sumner Co, TN in 1809, to Margaret Eason, also originally from Nash Co., NC. He is in Wilson Co. through the 1830 census. One of his adult sons went to MS (Yaloubusha Co.) about 1837, which is the line I descend from. Jeremiah moved, along with some children, to Todd Co., KY and is documented beginning with the 1840 census records. He and his wife appear to have died sometime after 1851 when he is listed in the tax list there. Some of his sons went on to Washington Co. IL. Some of the northern Bowers researchers with a brick wall might want to look at the KY Bowers. Hello Gary, Our Bowers list has been very quiet but I'm glad to know people are still on it and might possibly find a family connection. I haven't been working too much on my Bowers surname so am still at my brick wall: Jeremiah Bowers b. 1768 VA...but where in VA? I find the most similarity in names in Norfolk Co. VA. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Lawrence & Christine HAAG which was taken at the Gramm Studio in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. This appears to be the couple's wedding photograph with both appearing to be in their 20's or 30's at the time it was taken, likely sometime in the 1880's or 1890's. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this couple and their family: Christine A. BOWAR was b. 28 Jan 1872 in Primrose, WI to parents Lorenz or Lawrence BOWAR (b. 3 Sept 1828 in Remetschweil, Switzerland) and Sybilla SCHLIMGEN (b. 25 Nov 1832 in Bergheim, Prussia). Carrie, Ancestry.com uses the Sorenson lab for its testing. That lab uses a different protocol for reporting results, so that results at certain markers have to be adjusted to be able to compare them to our FTDNA results. If you will send me the Ancestry results, I can do the conversion and then post a partial pedigree for your brother to our Patriarchs Page and the results for the markers that are the same as those tested by FTDNA to our Results Page (there is not a complete overlap). However, from the search I did at Ancestry.com, it appears your brother's haplogroup is E1b1b and we have no other participant with that haplogroup. Thus, almost by definition he is not related to anyone in our project's database. The E haplogroup is relatively unusual for those with Western European roots. Out of our 50+ participants we have only two of the E haplogroup, and they belong to the subclade E1b1a. It is always desirable to confirm the haplogroup and haplotype of a lineage by testing more than one individual. In this case, it would be best to test one of the other Clark Co. branches of the Bower family, so as to eliminate the possibility of misattributed paternity somewhere in Adam's line (including Adam himself). As the administrator of the Bowers DNA Project, I would very much like to recruit a representative of the Clark Co., IN Bower families for our project. This is an important family to have tested because of their earlier roots in NC, VA and maybe even PA. I have asked David Kent Coy, who posted information on Adam Bower of Clark Co., IN, about whether he knows of a candidate in the line of Adam Bower, but he does not at this time. I know from my own Bowers research, though, that there were several other related families who moved to Clark Co., IN from NC. If you are a male Bower of one of these lines, or know of such a male Bower who might be recruited for our DNA Project, please let me know. Robert Strong
