    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Roy HELM which was taken at the Peher Studio in Bedford, IA. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Roy in his teens or 20's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Roy and his family: Levi Roy HELM was b. 22 Dec 1884 in Ross Township, Taylor Co., IA to parents Byrum HELM (b. 5 May 1840 in Lincoln TS, Morrow Co., OH-d. 7 Feb 1907 Ross TS, IA) and Sarah Ann BILLETER (b. 13 Feb 1842 in Harlan, IA-d. 14 Oct 1921 Ross TS, Bedford Co. He married Eathel BOWERS (1884-1964) on 6 May 1906 and the couple had 8 children including Orin Byrum (1907-1959); Robert Harley (1909-1948); Ralph Bowers (1914-1941); Loran or Loren Levi (1917-1989); Willard Edwin (1919-1951); Glenn Irvin; Hazel Marie; and Leslie Reed (1927-1927). Roy died 21 Jun 1964 in Clarinda, IA and is buried in the Graceland Cemetery in Bedford, IA. Census records provide the following details: 1895 census of Taylor, IA: Byrum HELM, age 54 Sarah A. 3. This article from familysearch.org is unknown writer. Do you know who has written this information? Where can an official change surname confirmation show? Is this the same man as Lazarus Francis Bowers? ---- LAZARUS FRANK BOWERS . 2013-12-21 00:45:27 GMT+0000 (UTC) . 0 Comments Lazarus Frank Bowers was born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1842. He lived there until he was eight years old. By that time he had a baby brother, who was two months old when they left Germany with his mother on a ship for America in 1850. Nothing was ever known by the boy of his father. His baby brother died on the way to America and was buried at sea. When he arrived in New York, he got serarated from his mother and never saw or heard of her again. Somewhere along the way, the name "Bauer" was changed to Bowers. The next time he was heard of in family history, he enlisted for service in the Grand Old Army of the Republic in 1861. He joined the Army in Harrison County, Indiana. He loved the Army! It was the first time in his life he had owned a pair of shoes of his own. His clothes were new and warm and he was well fed. He was in Sherman's Army, but did not go marching through Georgia, having been given duty to watch in important ferry. He was on the line of fire with his best friend beside him. They were under cannon fire. He watched his best friend get killed. After the war, he went back to Harrison County, Indiana to tell his best friend's family how their son had died. He stayed and married their daughter, Martha Clark in 1866. They raised nine children. ----

    1. [BOWERS] HARVEY - BOWERS Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Howard HARVEY of Ohiowa, Nebraska which was taken at the Griffin Studio in Hebron, NE. The photograph is dated Mar 1895 and indicates that Howard was 2 years and 3 months old at the time the photograph was taken. In addition to this info someone has written "Mrs. R. A. HARVEY of Ohiowa, NE" on the back of the photograph as well. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Harvey and his family: Howard HARVEY was b. 21 Dec 1892 in NE to parents Richard Abbott HARVEY (1870-1936) and Lillian E. CLEMENS (b. 1870). Howard married Juliet Alice PROUDFIT 26 Jan 1917 and together they had two daughters, Julie (later married James R. BOWERS) and Margaret (later married Carl SCHWEITZER). Howard died 11 Nov 1956 in Rock Rapids, IA and is buried in the Okoboji Cemetery in Arnolds Park, IA. Census records provide the following information: 1900 census of Ohiowa Village, NE: Richard A. HARVEY, age 30, born Oct 1869, married 8 years, born MO, mother born IN, a Bank Cashier Lillian E. HARVEY, wife, age 29, born Oct 1870, married 8 years, 1 child/1 living, born NE, parents born CT/OH Howard HARVEY, son, age 7, born Dec 1892, born NE 1920 census of Dallas, TX: Howard HARVEY, age 27, born NE, parents born MO/NE Juliette HARVEY, wife, age 26, born CO, parents born WI/NY Margaret HARVEY, dau, age 1, born NE 1940 census of Kansas City, MO: Howard HARVEY, age 47, born NE, a Manager Juliet A. 3. There is a DNA test that women can take that can be useful for genealogy purposes, namely the Family Finder test at Family Tree DNA. It is an autosomal test that identifies strands of DNA from all your ancestors for about 5 generations back. If you have some matches that indicate a relationship, then you can compare ancestral surnames to see where it is likely you share a common ancestor. Note that the results are limited to the Family Finder database, which currently is much smaller than the yDNA database. Men can also take this test. For more on this test, see http://www.familytreedna.com/faq/answers.aspx?id=8#879 Another test that women (again, men can also take this test) can take is the mtDNA test, which tracks the mitochrondial DNA of your direct female lineage back forever. But since mitochrondial results only identify your ancient maternal "clan", they are not much help for most genealogy purposes. For more on this test, see http://www.familytreedna.com/faq/answers.aspx?id=8#507. These tests can be ordered through the Bowers DNA Project. However, since the focus of the project is yDNA, mtDNA and Family Finder results are not presented there.
