    3. Here is another site that may be of help.....the NARA databases online. If you are researching the German Bowers who might have immigrated between 1850-1897........then you might want to look at: Data Files Relating to the Immigration of Germans to the United States, created, ca. 1977 - 2002, documenting the period 1850 - 1897 - /Collection CIR. /Web address for the databases: /http://aad.archives.gov/aad/ /

    1. [BOWERS] Registers of Servants Sent to Foreign Plantations
    2. D. Hinson
    3. I had the Virtual Jamestown website bookmarked for years and forgot about it. It has a great database of indentured servants coming from England. I don't know how I got to the database page from the home page as it wasn't clearly marked on the home page, but you can go back to Home by simply removing the indentured portion from the web address. Appears to be more on the site of interest as well. From their website: /"This database of indenture contracts includes over 15,000 indentured servants contracts from the London, Middlesex, and Bristol Registers. The contracts indicate not only the servant's name and length of indenture, but also the name of the servant's parents and owner, their home province and city, occupation, destination, and ship of embarkation. These records provide a detailed composition of indentured servants in the 17th century Atlantic World." / http://www.virtualjamestown.org/indentures/about_indentures.html

    1. [BOWERS] Bureau of Land Mgmt records
    2. D. Hinson
    3. This is a fantastic site if you have never used it. A reminder that records may have been added to the the BLM site since we all last looked at it. For those who aren't familiar with it, you can print out the records of govt lands sold/transferred to individuals. Government land did not include the original 13 colonies. You can do a search of all states or just by a single state. Click on Search Database at the top of the main page. You can order certified copies if you like but for genealogy, it's not really necessary. You should be able to print out the records very clearly on your printer at home. 1. [BOWERS] Roots (Rootsweb) Surname List
    2. D. Hinson
    3. Here's another source we may have forgotten about: the old Roots Surname List (RSL) now called the RootsWeb Surname List. This list was one of the first genealogy lists online and originally started by a group of people at Rand Corp. who were interested in genealogy and the Internet was in its infancy. It is now part of Ancestry but still free. The lists of surnames is extensive. I think people have forgotten about it and are not updating their email addresses. This database shows migration and allows searches to be narrowed by geographical area as well. www.rootsweb.ancestry.com Go down the left side to Search Engines & Databases and find: RootsWeb Surname List/RSL I was checking on Bowers in some of my states and emails I sent bounced. If you have info on the RSL but have forgotten about it, I would check it and update your information. The RSL used to be an excellent tool for finding connections and I believe still is.

    1. [BOWERS] Bowers of TX
    2. D. Hinson
    3. I have just located two sons of my ggg-grandfather, Bartlett Bowers. Hopefully there's someone who connects! Here's the info: They both were living in MS in the same area as their father (Bartlett) at least until just after 1870. By 1880, they were in the TX census records. 1. George R. Bowers (George Robert Bowers) b. 1837 TN, residing in Dallas Co., TX in 1880 and 1900 censuses. Wife Mary b. MS 1840. Children were Edward, Eudora, Mary, James, and Rosa and Laura. 1900 census states of 6 children, only 3 remained living. On the 1900 census, son James was 26 (b. 1874 MS), Rosa 23, b. 1877 TX, Laura 16, b. TX. Apparently Rosa had married someone named Clemmons. 2. Alfred M. Bowers (Alfred Maxie Bowers, A. M. Bowers) b. 1829 TN, residing in Dallas Co., TX in 1880, and Johnson Co., TX in 1900. Wife Emeline b. 1833 MS. Children in 1880 were G. W., Mattie, Ida, Mack, Geo. W. The 1900 census states that of 9 children, only 1 was living in 1900, who was not listed with them on the 1900 census.

    3. With the help of this list I have found the following names and dates. It would be nice to tie this small group into another family tree and finish the descendants. My contact information is: bobmoyer@asheboro.com These are all Philadelphia City families - N. Franklin, Cardeza, Hope and Randolph street area of NE Phila Caroline Rempp (b. 1847) m. Phillip Bowers (b. unk) and they had one child John K. Bowers (b. 1870) John K. Bowers (b. 1870) m. Annie ______ ( b.1870) and they had one child Jacob Meyer Bowers (b.1891) Jacob Meyer Bowers (b. 1891) m. Florence E. _________ and they had three children Madeline I. (b. 1917), Dorothy M. (b. 1922) and Richard (b. 1928) Jacob Meyer Bowers draft registration card for WWII shows the family lived at 1601 Cardeza St and that's the newest information I have been able to find. Suggestions on how to run these forward to today would be welcome. Thank you for the help in the past - I hope someday to connect these with another family tree by posting on the list. Also, has anyone run across reference to "Merzbacher and Meyer Produce" (974 Randolph St in Philly in the 1890 City Directory) The Caroline Rempp/Bowers (above), in later life, also married Jacob R. Meyer who was one of the owners. Merzbacher and Meyer were also brother-in-laws (census info). Bob Moyer Asheboro, NC

    1. [BOWERS] James Bowers of Morris Co. NJ & Middle TN & Other Middle TN Bowers
    2. D. Hinson
    3. I hope we haven't all given up on our Bowers genealogy as the list as been so quiet! I am reviewing old notes since it is too hot in TX to be outside now. James Bowers was in Montgomery Co., TN. He was b. May 28, 1756 in Morris Co., NJ, d. March 9, 1843 Sumner Co., TN. He had 3 sons also living in TN. I remember one was John. I think there used to be several descendants on the list of James. Are any of them still on the list? If so, have you taken the DNA test or thought about it? I did not notice James' lineage on the FTDNA page. In fact, I didn't notice anyone with ancestors in Middle TN who have taken the DNA test nor posted their lineage. We still have several Bowers in Wilson Co., TN with no connections......Jesse, Giles, and Morris Bowers, also a Jane Bower. I've not found any documentation to cite relationship to my Jeremiah Bowers, or to each other. My ancestor, Jeremiah Bowers also lived in Sumner Co. & Wilson Co., TN from around 1800 to 1837. In my analysis of his census records, none of the others in Wilson County are his children. I think the DNA tests may be the only thing to solve our brick walls once we've gotten back to the 1760's....where I now am. One thing in common with James of NJ is he was also in NC for a while just as my Jeremiah was. Did they all come to TN together? Are they related? We now have several who have done the DNA test but many of us do not match anyone so far. There are only a bout 36 participants. We simply don't have enough Bowers yet. And......Bowers is one of the most popular names. There are a lot of us! I think it's exciting that we now have a DNA test that can put our groups together. Even though I'm back to 1768 in VA, I do not know Jeremiah's brothers. As many of you, I'm looking for a needle in the haystack in VA and not found a definite record for Jeremiah but see many Bowers with similar family names but no proof of connections. And, since the DNA test ruled out that my line was connected to Giles Bowers who lived across the Tar River from my Jeremiah, living in close proximity is obviously no longer a given that two Bowers are related. So, Bowers cousins, if you can't stand an unresolved puzzle like me, think about trying the DNA method. Robert Strong, on the list, can give you more info. Donna

    3. My Bowers were born in Morristown, NJ in the mid 1700s...maybe our lines are connected? What else do you know of James? I'm very much into DNA testing, but have no known male Bowers. Anyone out there on my line of Lemuel Bowers who married Sarah Mills and moved to VT and NY ca 1800s....and after his father Lemuel died in Morris Co, NJ? My Lemuel owned a home during the Amer Rev (an Inn and Tavern, actually) that was the governor's home for a short time (and after the war). I believe it is on some historical register in Morristown...hopefully, it's still standing, at least. Emily ----- Original Message ----- From: "D. 1. [BOWERS] Bowers in TN/NC/VA/NJ & elsewhere & Bowers DNA project @ FTDNA
    2. D. Hinson
    3. Hi Everyone, I decided to start cleaning up emails....and had this one from last year. I now have done the DNA test and do not connect to anyone, not even those I thought could be a possibility in NC and TN, those being Giles Bowers in Franklin Co., NC who lived just across the river from mine who were in Nash Co., NC nor William Pitt Bowers who was in TN the same time as mine were in the Davidson Co., Sumner, & Wilson Co. areas. My question is: Has anyone from the William Pitt Bowers line been DNA tested yet? I don't think I have seen his name on the FTDNA page. The old note below from Sue could be something to look at further. Even though I match no one, the question does remain whether mine came in through VA or further north. My Jeremiah Bowers (either son of or brother to John Bowers) was born 1768 in VA according to his 1850 census record. This is my brickwall. However, the book Norfolk Co., VA Tithables 1766-1780 list both Bowers and Deans families. It is know that both families were in Nash Co., NC in the late 1700's and the Bowers, Deans and Eason families are interwoven. Names in the VA Tithables book were: 1767-James, Maxmillian, Bartley, John, Robert Bowers 1767-Daniel, Lamuell, Thomas, Solomon, and James(Sr.), William(Sr.), Willis Deans, and William(Jr.) Deans 1768-Bartley, Robert, John and James Bowers 1768-Solomon, William(Jr.), James, Lamuell, Thomas, William, and Willis Deans 1770-Bartlett and Max Bowers 1771-Bartle and Maximilian Bowers 1774-Bartlet Bowars Anyone connected to those listed above from VA? Those with a connection to William Pitt Bowers, please read Sue's note below from last year. Our list has been quite quiet. Those of us living in the south are now driven indoors by the 90+ temperatures, so now's the time to get back to our research. Let's figure out these Bowers! -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [BOWERS] Bowers dna project @ FTDNA Date: Mon, 7 May 2007 08:08:14 -0500 From: "Sue" <vsbowers@seark.net> Reply-To: bowers@rootsweb.com To: <Bowers@rootsweb.com> To the researchers of Giles Bowers of Isle of Wight, VA....... I am happy to see another match to Giles.. It seems to open another door in our long research and it's long awaited! B-25 is the issue I want to discuss. The name is William S. Bowers born 1860......I have spent this weekend studying this. I think this "S" should actually be a "P"....(It was misread in census records) This is William Pitt Bowers........born in Goodlettsville, Davidson co., TN to W. P. Bowers b. 1824 (also William Pitt?) and Martha Susan McCaslin/ McCasland?.....W. P. apparently is a son of John Calhoun Bowers and Sarah "Sally" Lassiter......... I have discussed this with Rita and she said they were uncertain of his middle name.....and his death certificate did say he was born at Nashville. Donna Henson, (Donna, my e-mail to you bounced) and all please help with this. Is this "The" William Pitt line from Morris Co., NJ? IF so, our common ancestor would be back before Giles in my opinion. John Calhoun Bowers place of birth is listed as Morris co., NJ (if info is correct) otherwise I would look at Benjamin Bowers of Orange Co., NC as his line...... As far as I know Benjamin never went to NJ.....he was always in Orange Co., NC (Benjamin being son of Giles of Isle of Wight) I am excited at this possibility. ~Sue~ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BOWERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
