Joan, Maybe Robert Strong can answer your question. He's the Bowers Project Adm. Since you were looking at a different surname outside the Bowers project, I'm not sure how each administrator operates their project. And, maybe I was not supposed to send out the Bowers Project page address. When the project first began, I believe the page was sent out and I looked it over but took quite a while before having someone submit DNA. Maybe Robert can tell us what FamilyTreeDNA's philosophy is on this and whether most project administrators want people to take the test before granting access to the project information. I just did a search to see if there were any projects for the other surnames I research by clicking on Surname Projects at the top and then using the alphabet letter for the surname. But it appears that, for example, if I choose the letter "p," only all the surnames beginning with "pa" come up (only 25 names) but it shows the number of projects found as 226. I could not see how to access the remaining names under "p." There may be some technical difficulties with FTDNA right now since they just updated their site. But that is aside from your question. I looked at the "Parker" name which is in my husband's realm and the screen that comes up for "Parker" is a request to join that particular project. It seems to give an application with an area to type in information. So I'm thinking perhaps one could ask if they can look at who's tested and how the project handles its website to decide whether to join. Maybe they can grant temporary access if they restrict it. It didn't appear on the Parker name that I had to do the test first to fill out the application....but I didn't check to see what happens after I fill in the code and request. My question would be: Would I want to do a DNA test without first seeing what lines have been tested and had an opportunity to see how they have set up the project website? As I said, maybe Robert can discuss the FTDNA philosophy on this. He has done a great job with the Bowers project. If anything, I think being able to view the Bowers project information has been an encouragement to me to do the DNA test. Donna H. See lineage below. Here is my brick wall. John Bowers d. 1803....Is he the father of Jeremiah....or his brother? Jeremiah signed and proved John's will of 1803 in court in Davidson Co., TN, but no relationship was mentioned. John married Elizabeth Ann Hamblen Foster in January of 1801 in Davidson Co., TN and they had one son, George b. 1801 (see below). Elizabeth's maiden name was Hamblen. She married John Foster in 1795 in Prince Edward Co., VA. He died in Nashville, TN 1797 and left two small children. John and Jeremiah were both in Nash Co., NC before going to TN. Jeremiah (my gggg-grandfather) m. Margaret Eason 1809 in Sumner Co., TN. They resided in Wilson Co. until around 1837 when they moved to KY. Their son Bartlett (my line) moved to MS. Other mystery Bowers in Wilson Co. TN were Jesse, Giles, and Morris. Another mystery is Max Bowers who was Margaret Eason's guardian when they still lived in NC. I would love to find a descendant of John's son George for DNA testing. Hello, I've been a member for quite some time but have never posted before. My great grandfather was Leonard William Bowers, born Mar 12, 1861 in Philadelphia, PA and died Jan 23, 1923 in Norristown, Montgomery County, PA. I know very little about him. His mother's name was Rebecca maiden name unknown. In the 1870 census there is only Leonard and his mother, no father, and they are living with a Joseph Shermer in the Andorra area, which I believe is around Manayunk. There is no information on that census other than their names and age. I can't find them in the 1880 census. In 1900, 1910, and 1920, his father is recorded as born in PA, Germany, and Holland respectively. I'm assuming the name may have originally been Bauer or Bauers. Leonard was an only child. He married Mary W Mensch in Philadelphia in 1908, when Mary was 16 and Leonard 47. In 1900, Leonard and his mother are living in Bridgeport, Montgomery County, PA. Rebecca died June 27, 1907. In 1910 and 1920, Leonard, his wife Mary, and their children are living in Norristown, Montgomery County, PA. Deb Stanish Reading, PA D. Hinson wrote: > I recently saw someone post their line. My line is John Bowers of Caswell Co., NC. John was married to Lucy LNU and had three children. They were Henrietta, Elizabeth and James. John Bowers died in Caswell Co. in 1823, will was signed the same year and was probated in 1824 by his son-in-law Samuel Keeton. John Bowers is found in Caswell Co. as early as 1795 when he bought land on South Hico Lake. Henrietta was my gggrandmother who m. Stephen Hood son/o Abraham Hood of Caswell Co., NC., prior to that Amelia Co., Virginia. I have Elizabeth's line but James has eluded me. Maybe I can make contact with a James Bowers researcher. Donna, The Bowers in Bedford Co., TN are not down line from Giles of IOW ......Naming pattern is familiar to this line but....I checked out Henry Bowers that was in Arkansas Co., AR. He was post master there at AR Post. His father was born in NJ and his mother was born in KY....Henry has children born in IL & IN as well as AR.......I don't think Henry was ever in Bedford Co., TN. I haven't looked at the NJ line of Bowers.......They could very well be related (upline) to Giles of IOW .......I have never been able to identify parents of Giles. Maybe it's time I did look at the NJ line? ~Sue~
List, I had the very old note below dated 2001 about Bowers in TN & AL. I believe this line descends from Giles Bowers of Isle of Wight, but do not know for sure. It does not appear they are tied to my group, and if tied to Giles Bowers, then I know they are definitely not my ancestors since my DNA does not match Giles Bowers lines. I did not see them listed on the Patriarch's page of the Bowers DNA Project. I searched for the child, Solomon, and do not find him listed. So, do these belong to someone on the list? I think it would help to add the various lines of descendants of Giles, who were in other states, to the Patriarch page. That way, those still researching who have done the DNA test and do not match Giles Bowers, for example, could eliminate them from their research and notes. If those below are not descendants of Giles, then perhaps they should be listed as another Bowers line on the Patriarch page. If someone out there is connected to this group, please consider adding them. For those of us who have taken the DNA test and do not match any Bowers group yet, we use the process of elimination to focus our research. It would be helpful to make sure we are not researching lines that tie with, for example, Giles Bowers. We need all the lineages of Giles, posted, as well as those of the other groups, for even DNA to be a good research tool. So, if anyone recognizes bunch below, can we tie them in on the Patriarch page? -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [BOWER] Bowers - Mostly Southern Resent-Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 08:32:57 -0700 Resent-From: BOWER-L@rootsweb.com Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 10:32:57 -0500 From: Donna Hinson <dhinson@kellnet.com> Reply-To: BOWER-L@rootsweb.com To: BOWER-L@rootsweb.com I have the information below on Bedford Co., TN Bowers, some of which went to AL, AR, TX. The children's names are very similar to some of those of Wilson Co. and Davidson Co., TN. Is anyone related to them and can help solve the mystery of who they are and whether they were originally from Wilson or Davidson Co.? The information on the widow's name is also very confusing. Is it Mary or Nancy? John Bowers, Sr. of Bedford Co., TN The following information is according to the book, Bedford County TN Wills & Vital Records from Newspapers, 1996, page 121-122. (Will dated June 15, 1836, on page 211 of records for John Bowers, Sr.) Husband: John Bowers, Sr. Wife: Mary Married: 1797? Children: William, Benjamin, Jesse, David, Green, Henry, Solomon, Lemuel, Mary R. Hedrick, Giles, and John Son-in-law, Wesley W. Hedrick to reside or live on plantation and take care of wife. Had 4 negroes. Another source (Book: TN Tidbits?) showed following: Bowers, John ?Died in the summer of 1836 as shown in the suit of Wm McGrew vs Benjamin Bowers of Bedford County & William Bowers of AL. John Bowers had made a will leaving negroes to all his children, being 9 or 10 in number. Benjamin & William Bowers were executors. Wm. McGrew had purchased the interest of Green Bowers in said negroes and the executors refused to pay said legacy to him. He filed suit 3 December 2838. In the answer it was stated that John Bowers had 11 children, to wit, William, Benjamin, Jesse, John, Solomon, David, Green Henry, Lemuel, Giles Bowers & Mary R. Hedrick. Mary Bowers, widow of John, is entitled to dower. The will was shown. His son-in-law was Wesley W. Hedricks. The will was dated 15 June 1836. (Bed TN, Ch Ct. Min. 1/209). Another suit shows that William Bowers was in Bount County, AL, and Henry Bowers was in Arkansas County, AR. (Ibid 236) Jesse Bowers also lives in Blount County, AL. The widow, Mary Bowers, has now (by April 1840) died. (Ibid 286) Another suit filed 21 January 1841 by Lemuel Bowers, a citizen of AL vs. Benjamin F. Bowers of Bedford County, TN and William Bowers of TX. Lemuel Bowers wants a settlement of his fathers estate. (Ibid 377) The widow was shown as Nancy Bowers. I sent the page below out last year but they may have added more names since then. They have surnames A-V now. Click on "search" that appears below the paragraphs, not the search at the top right. I'm not sure whether their Civil War card list means there may be more info in "files" that can be obtained. If so, I missed reading that. Maybe someone on the list familiar with the Alabama Civil War records could tell us. The Alabama Dept. of Archives & History now has their database of Civil War Service Cards completed through surnames A-R. http://www.archives.state.al.us/civilwar/index.cfm
Below is another note I had saved. We were so busy last year with graduation, weddings, etc. during May & June so I don't remember what happened on this. Sue, did you figure out if William S. Bowers is really William P. Bowers? (see your note below). I checked my notes on John Calhoun Bowers and the 1850 Davidson Co. TN census showed he was b. in TN. William Pitt Bowers, his father, was said to be born in NJ. However, I'm curious whether anyone figured out if William S. Bowers who's DNA is the same as Giles Bowers is really William P. Bowers. Would be nice if a known descendant of William Pitt Bowers would consider doing the DNA test. I think the tests are beginning to be of help in tying all the Bowers together. This line was also in Pitt Co. NC for a time near mine who were in Nash Co., and also not that far from Franklin Co. NC. Are any of those researching William Pitt still on the list? Bowers born 1860......I have spent this weekend studying this. I think this "S" should actually be a "P"....(It was misread in census records) This is William Pitt Bowers........born in Goodlettsville, Davidson co., TN to W. P. Bowers b. 1824 (also William Pitt?) and Martha Susan McCaslin/ McCasland?.....W. P. apparently is a son of John Calhoun Bowers and Sarah "Sally" Lassiter......... I have discussed this with Rita and she said they were uncertain of his middle name.....and his death certificate did say he was born at Nashville. Donna Henson, (Donna, my e-mail to you bounced) and all please help with this. Is this "The" William Pitt line from Morris Co., NJ? IF so, our common ancestor would be back before Giles in my opinion. John Calhoun Bowers place of birth is listed as Morris co., NJ (if info is correct) otherwise I would look at Benjamin Bowers of Orange Co., NC as his line...... As far as I know Benjamin never went to NJ.....he was always in Orange Co., NC (Benjamin being son of Giles of Isle of Wight) I am excited at this possibility. ~Sue~ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BOWERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message Internal Virus Database is out of date. As Donna has noted, there are many Bowers/Bowers/Bauer lines that have not been added to the Patriarch Page of the Bowers DNA Project. Please note that participation in the DNA Project is not required to have your line posted. Of course, we eventually hope to have as many lines tested as possible. Given the relative commonness of the name and its spelling variants, more participants are needed to help break down those brick walls. Our Project's Patriarch Page can be viewed at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/b/bowers/pats.html. Robert Strong Administrator of the Bowers DNA Project
This is another old note. The reason I'm forwarding to the list is because in cleaning up my old files, I am realizing how many Bower(s) lines are missing from the Patriarch's page on the Bowers DNA project. Not only is this line not listed, but neither is William Pitt Bowers of NC & TN, and James Bowers of Montgomery Co., TN, a Rev. War patriot from NJ. Maybe Robert Strong can tell us if it's possible for current researchers to post their line to the Patriarch page, as we did early in the project, and consider DNA testing in the future or for some other descendant who comes along and wants to do the test. Course, how you obtain VA information today may have changed since 1998, but I find anything is worth a try. I had the email below which I was about to delete and wondered if Barbara is still on the list as her email address from 2007 no longer works. Hoping she (and others) might join the Bowers DNA project since several have tested for TN and NC. My cousin who was just visiting me from VA said his daughter studied works in forensics with DNA. She just did some testing on her mother to prove whether she is an identical or fraternal twin to her sister. Turns out she's identical. It's amazing what can be done with DNA and I really believe the DNA tests for genealogy will help us solve our brick walls. I was telling my cousin I didn't match any group and when he heard we only have about 35 participants, as our group increases in size, we will see more results. At least I am now able to get rid of many old emails for those Bowers lines I do not match. When I manage to go through paper files, I will let you all know. I hate to throw anything away if someone can use it.
