Our Bower/Bowers family descends from Stephen Gottlieb Bauer and Maria Glock, who came to this country from Wurttemburg in 1838 and settled first near Aughwick Mills PA. However, we have never been able to find the other branches of his family who emigrated at a different date. This is from my great-grandfather's memoirs: "[Stephen Gottlieb Bauer] had an older bro. Geo. T. Bauer, born June 16, 1796. Died Mar 23, 1880. (He was a large portly man (as also his descendants) in Kings service or Government official, a police mail carrier until just a few years before his death. Was pensioned. "Father had another bro. younger (I think his name was Jacob) never married and one rumor has it he died in France on his way to the United States. Another story is hew as lost track of as the postal service was very imperfect. Had no envelops, no stamps, used sealing wax to close letter. "Geo T. had two children: Cha. Alexander born April 16, 1829. Died June 30 1863 in Ogle Co. Ills., buried at North Grove Cemetery. "Cousin Chars. A had learned to be a mechanic in Germany while there he joined a party of Revoluitonists. They were going to overthrow the Kingdom. Their plan was found out and he had to flee for his life. He had hardly got away when the police were after him and his property was confiscated. After he came to Ills., he got a position in shop or sawmill in Freeport, Ills. And there he got acquainted with Cousin Mary's ma (as she was cook where he boarded). They were married and her folks lived near Bailyville, Ills. Cousin Chas. next got a position on the ICCR to fix pumps along the RR. Had to do lots of traveling and so much after night, got tired of that and bought a farm near Bailyville. Went to farming and they raised lots of corn and one fall I went to help him shuck (I walked from Lena 24 or 25 miles) at .50 cts a day and we got out early. It snowed and got cold. Their children were small yet, they had three, two girls and one boy. Charles lives near Baxter, Ia. His address is Laurel, Ia. "Kate married Jno. Paul. They live at Maryland, Ogle County, Ills. Have three boys and one girl. "Mary is a trained nurse. Has now built a house in Foreston, Ills. "Chars A. sis, Louisa Bauer, also born at Stutgart Wirtemberg came to America some years later than her bro. Staid with us for some time then went to Syracuse NY. Was married to a Jno Thurwachter. Had three children, two girls one boy Jno who died a few years ago...." So Bauer/Bower/Bowers descendants from Kleinbottwar, Wurttemberg, where did you go?
