Bauer is a farmer who works on his own land, whose possession is so big, that it nourishes him and his family completely. There are Hof-(farm) Voll- (full) or Halb- (half) -Bauern. In contrast there are Viertelhofbesitzer (quarterfarmowners) and Eigenlehner, with only a small farm, who had to lease additional land and Häusler or Büdner, which had only a little piece of gardenland and lived from day labour or trade.
