    1. [BOWER] Henry Bower, Jr. (info found in an old file at the library)
    2. Lisa K. Brown
    3. I am new to genealogy. I don't think this family ties into my line, but I found it, so I thought I would see if anyone else could use the information. This information was in a public file folder in my public library (Clark County, IN), so I cannot speak for how correct it is. The librarian said it was donated to the library by a family member of Henry Bower, Jr. I copied it as it reads, so the comments in the genealogy is from the original author, which was not listed. I don't know any more about the data or the people than what is included below. I hope it helps someone. (By the way, I am researching the line of Joel Bower (Sr and especially Jr.) from Ripley county, IN., so if someone can tie this person to Joel or has other information about Joel Bower, feel free to email me!) Relatives thinks that Henry Alex Bower family went to Johnson County, IN; and in 1849 they moved to Hamilton County, IN, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. In 1850 he built a water-powered sawmill in, or near, the creek near his home, south of Ekin, IN. A few years later he built a water-powered grist-mill. Both mills were the first of their kind in that part of Indiana. After Henry Alex Bower started sawing logs into lumber, the people from miles away brought their logs in to his mill on wagons to have them sawed into lumber from which they built their homes. That was the first lumber in the area. The farmers brought corn and wheat in on horseback from many miles away to have them ground into meal and flour for bread for their food. They were not growing wheat until after he built his mill, and then they started raising wheat; and Henry would grind it into flour for them. Henry Alex Bower was an important man in Indiana. He furnished the people with the first lumber of that area, which made it possible for them to live in a house made from lumber. He also furnished them with fresh meal and flour ground from grain they brought from their farms. There should be a monument built for Henry Alex Bower in Hamilton County, IN. II.
