    1. [BOWER] ROLL CALL: Bauer from Kleinbottwar, Wurttemburg, 1838
    2. My Bauer line doesn't seem to fit with anybody else's. Original immigrant: Stephen Gottlieb Bauer b 1/1/1799 at KleinBottwar, m. Maria Glock of Hoeneck. They came to America in 1838 and that same year converted to German Baptist Brethren (now Church of the Brethren or "Dunkard") at Aughwick Mills, PA. Their first son, Jacob Fredrick Bauer, was born 1836 in Germany and died young. The next son, Karl Gottlieb Bauer was born 1/17/1838 in Germany and emigrated with them; he was known as Charles Bower. He died at the Battle of Shiloh in the Civil War, a Union Army volunteer. (His Dunkard parents were much dismayed by his decision to enlist, which he did without telling them till it was a done deal.) He left a diary which tells of the time between his injuries in the Civil War and his death at Quincy, IL, several weeks later. He never married and had no children. John L. Bowers, the third son, was born in Huntingdon County PA 3/22/1840 and died 1/26/1917 in Spokane, WA. He married Elizabeth Roxana Guenther in 1866 in Lena, Stephenson Co., IL; they had 9 children. David Bower, the fourth son, was born in Huntingdon County PA 4/15/1842 and died 2/17/1932 in Bowmont, ID. He married Susanna Badger July 7, 1867 at Lena, Stephenson Co., IL. Her father was a Dunkard preacher. David & Susanna had six children (5 girls, 1 boy). Benjamin Bauer was born 1844 in PA and died of cholera May 1849 at Galena, IL, during the family's move from Huntingdon Co PA to Stephenson Co. IL. Samuel Bauer was born 1848 and died May, 1849 at Galena IL during the family's move from Huntingdon Co. PA to Stephenson Co. IL. Of the six sons, only two lived to marry and produce descendants. The family name was anglicized to BOWER by Stephen Gottlieb Bauer in 1851 at Stephenson Co., IL. I maintain a mailing list of descendants of Stephen Gottlieb & Maria Glock Bower and am always looking for more family members. We publish a quarterly family newsletter that includes family history and current stuff. Jan T
