Resent-Date: Sat, 2 Jun 2001 22:03:21 -0600 Resent-From: BOWERS-L@rootsweb.com Date: Sat, 2 Jun 2001 23:00:57 -0500 From: "Carolynn McLaughlin" <cmclaugh@alumni.indiana.edu> Reply-To: BOWERS-L@rootsweb.com Organization: IU School of Law To: BOWERS-L@rootsweb.com I need information on a few people in my Bowers line. They are reputed to be of English stock. First off, I can tell you from photos that go back to my gg-grandfather that all of the men in this family were tall, with dark brown or black hair and most with blue eyes. They were dark complected as well, taking a tan easily. Some of the brothers of my g-grandfather had extremely deep-set eyes, which made them look stern. If this look runs in your line (my uncle looks just like my gg-grandfather, so it has continued in my family for four generations) and any of the names and dates (many of which are approximate) match your info, PLEASE drop me a line. We might well be related!! This is my direct line, from now on back: ME V My mother was Kathryn Lucile Bowers, b. 11 Aug 1936 at Minneapolis, MN, d. 20 Jun 1993 at Stony Brook, NY. Her brother is Warner Fremont Bowers II, b. 29 Jan 1939 at Minneapolis, MN. V My grandfather was Dr. Warner Fremont Bowers I, b. 2 Feb 1906 at Jeffersonville, IN, d. 15 May 1994 at Stony Brook, NY. He married Lucile Margaret Hinzie (b. 25 Sep 1905 at Omaha, NE, d. 22 Feb 1985 at Huntington, NY) on 25 Jun 1931 at Omaha, NE. He was an only child. V My g-grandfather was Merton Aubrey Bowers, b. 22 Dec 1872 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN, d. 3 Mar 1949 at Bay Pines, FL. He married Deborah Dorcas Schutt (b. 20 Aug 1871 at Fithian IL, d. Bay Pines, FL) in 1901, probably in Indiana or Illinois. They are both buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Merton was career military, serving in the quartermaster corps. in the Philippines and the Canal Zone early in the 20th century. Merton had 5 siblings: Harold Bowers, b. in 188? at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN. Harold married Ethel A., who died (possibly) in Indianapolis. I know that, at one point, Harold was rumored to have lived in Indianapolis. Harold had a second wife named Louise. Here my knowledge of Harold ends. IF anyone out there has info, I'd love to have it. I'd like to find cousins here in Indiana. Herbert Bowers, b. 188? at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN. He might have been a bachelor. Here my knowledge of Herbert ends. IF anyone out there has info, I'd love to have it. I'd like to find cousins here in Indiana. Theodore Bowers, b. 188? at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN. He might have been a bachelor. Here my knowledge of Theodore ends. IF anyone out there has info, I'd love to have it. I'd like to find cousins here in Indiana. Stella A. Bowers, b. 1883 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN, d. 1932 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN, of a ruptured appendix. She never married. Ethel Bowers, b. 5 Oct 1885 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN, m. in Washington DC to Mr. Morse, d. May 1968 at Washington DC. V My gg-grandfather was Homer Bowers, b. 20 Aug 1845 at Vienna, Rush Co., IN, d. 5 Nov 1902 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN. He married Emma Cleora Walker (b. 28 Feb 1848 at Lexington KY, d. 22 Sep 1924 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN) on 20 Aug 1870. Homer was a country doctor in New Ross, IN who did a year or two of medical school at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1864-1865. Homer was a Cornish Rite Mason in New Ross/Crawfordsville, IN. Homer had 5, 6 or 7 siblings, according to various census records: poss. Catherine Bowers, b. 1843 poss. Alice Bowers, b. 1848 Webster Bowers, b. 1854 Dayton and Freemont (or Fremont) Bowers, twins b. 1857 Edward and Emma Bowers, twins b. 1859 Dayton was said to have "gone West" according to family lore, and my grandfather was always pissed off that I couldn't find anything about him. I still can't, as is true for his siblings. If you have anything on these people, please drop me a line. V My ggg-grandfather was William Bowers, b.1822, possibly in Ohio and possibly in Kentucky. He married Sarah Chenoweth, (b.1825 at Jefferson Co., IN. Sarah Chenoweth's parents, James Chenoweth and Rachell Hill, were a part of the family that settled Louisville, KY. I know painfully little about William Bowers. I have some papers that show that he had some sort of store and was in debt, but paid those debts back. The store was, I think, in Ohio. Here the line ends, for me. I have no idea whether William had siblings because I have no idea who his parents were. I received an email from this list a year or two ago that had very helpful info which, according to some birth dates, tentatively tied William to Denman Aaron Bowers (b. bef. 1805) and Matilda Shields, as their son, but that email was eaten when my last computer died. Denman's parents were Phineas Bowers, b. 1765 at Providence, Morris Co., NJ and Sarah Connet, b. 23 Feb 1773. I have no idea whether I tie exists here or not. I'd love help with this. Thanks for reading this magnum opus!
