Yes, it is unethical for them to sell this information, but we all search the Internet in the hopes we will run across something that connects to what we are researching. It is up to us to check out to see if this information is correct. If you know it is incorrect, it seems to me that you would want to correspond with the party involved to correct the information so information disseminated would not be erroneous. When you correspond with someone, is it not to either add to your own information or to contribute to theirs? And what's to say that the information you passed on was not also found from other sources? After all, if you have it, others probably have it also. Isn't sharing what it's all about? It's like a puzzle. Some of us have a few pieces and someone else may have a few other pieces. It takes all the pieces to make a complete picture. And sometimes we try to put some of the pieces in the wrong place and eventually realize this just isn't going to work. Sometimes we need someone else to say, Hey-that doesn't fit there. Then we have to keep searching for the right piece. If we are so possessive of our information that we don't want others to use it because we did the hard work, then don't put it on the Internet or don't share the information. By the same token, if we have this attitude, then we shouldn't be using anything found on the Internet that is not an official record. Yes, it is sad that some people or organizations are trying to make money off of the work of others, but not posting to or using these sites may keep you from finding that one clue to break down that brick wall, or to run across that cousin or relative we know nothing about. While I don't like what is going on, I'm sure these companies incur many expenses to furnish us a place to post or share this information. We have a choice as to whether we are willing to pay for this service or to post on a service that we know is charging a fee for information they are getting for free. Only putting your information on the Bowers family site is unrealistic, as most of us are searching for other names too, that may or may not be associated with the Bowers family directly. Are you also going to quit searching these other sites for information you have not been able to find on our family site? Information about our family is not just ours. It is part of the heritage of anyone who might in some way be tied to this family, and should in my opinion, be shared freely, no matter who did the hard work. Diana
