Hi everyone, In the interest of keeping everyone informed, I'm forwarding a message that's begun to circulate around the genealogical community. You may have seen this before and if so, please just delete. But if not then you'll definitely wanted to read this. In this particular instance mine is not to sway your opinion, but to enable you to make an informed one with regard to your wallets and the information you possess. If I hear anything more, you can bet I'll be posting it for you. I hope you're all having a super Saturday! :) Colleen ~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~@~ In a message dated 3/24/01 1:36:16 AM Eastern Standard Time, DtwRaver@aol.com writes: Subj: Fwd: Important Regarding GenForum Date: 3/24/01 1:36:16 AM Eastern Standard Time From: DtwRaver@aol.com To:OH-L-request@rootsweb.com Subject: Ethics Hi everyone. this came as a message from the listowner for the Rockingham, New Hamspshire list that I belong to. I thought everyone ought to see what is going on. Mr. Marston has asked that we send this along to the lists we belong to so I am doing so. Please read the whole message to see what is going on. I think at the very least we ought to take it as a warning and a reminder that not all we find is correct information and just use it as a tool to look further. Until I started checking up on this fiasco about my father's pedigree, I had NO clue that Genealogy.com was doing this. I want to declare WAR! Hi Beautiful People CAUTION: DON'T THROW THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATH WATER!!!! I am usually the quiet one but now I must speak. I subscribe to the FTM site not to get their newest production of someone elses version of what they think their family tree is (which I may add is approximately 50% incorrect) but as a resource to look at books that are out of print which they have in their library and do research at my computer. Those books, census, indexes and records so scanned into their files are correct and a viable source for our research. The individual family trees in the World Family Tree Collection and whatever they call the other collection are a compilation of submitted family trees from their subscribers, taken from the LDS site or borrowed from information found on line. Is this unethical? In my opinion it is. (The ones I have viewed are riddled with mistakes, and I am not going to send them the corrections. Their reputation in the genealogical commuinty is continuing to slip) Now if we allow this to govern how we exchange information between each other on line then WE are the losers. The Bowers site is an award winning site (just had to add that) if someone comes in and copies some correct data from this site and tries to sell it to someone else I feel this is very unethical but not something we cannot control. The purpose of this site and the other sites for the other Surnames is to exchange freely the information between each other for the express purpose of compiling the most accurate information on the family that we can muster. THANKS FOR BEING THEIR FOR ME IN MY QUEST FOR KNOWLEDGE GENTLE SPIRITS!
