From military records, John W. BOWER was born in PA, one record says 'Berks' one 'Bucks'-didn't have much luck working from that reference . His first enlistment was in 1852 at St. Louis, MO. It also mentioned his mother having been born in Rhode Island and father in Pa.. I have a marriage certificate showing his marriage to Ann Gorman (born in KY) on March 22, 1868 at Providence, Washington, Ind..(his last discharge after Civil War was at Louisville, KY) in 1860 census the only BOWER family with wife born in Rhode Island and husband in PA was: Thomas E. Bower b. about 1808 , Berks Cty, PA Eliza Ann b. about 1805 in Rhode Island. (In WFT #869 Vol II) she is shown as Eliza Ann Green and she was married at Floyd Cty, Ind on Jan 20, 1829 if this is our family) John W. had enlisted by the 1860 census but there were following children Benjamin, b Mar 11, 1835 ( if he is this family?) born PA Henry age 21 born PA Mary C. age 19 born Ind James age 17, born Ind Elizabeth A. age 13 Homer (harrit?) age 12 On the 1870 census Washington Cty, Jackson Twp, Ind p. 17 John W. BOWER farmer age 35 Ann, housewife, age 32 May (Mary Elizabeth) 4 months, b. Nov 14, 1869 living in the next household were: Eliza BOWERS b. N.C.? age 65 Harrit age 23 b. Ind Jacqueline age 5, born Ind Serisa age 2 born Ind (are these Harrit's children?) John and Ann and baby moved to Missouri before October 17, 1872 when my grandfather was born in Montreal, Camden, Missouri. I lack the energy to pursue this family farther, as well as the time and money!, From the military records, John W. was a constant trouble to them--and ended up a private after 3 enlistments! In prior searches, I found several BOWER families coming from Pa, to Ind and on to Missouri, but none that I could identify as mine. I stay on the list, HOPING to find a cousin somewhere! >From the McLouth (KS) Times, May 27, 1904: "Miss Mabel Bowers of Lawrence visited with her sister, Mrs. Ed Fetty." This note was confusing to me for a few moments because my grandma was Mabel (Kimmel) Bowers and it took me that long to realize Miss Mabel Bowers wasn't Mrs. On the off chance that these sisters might belong to one of you, I looked in the Jefferson County (KS) tombstone inscription book, and learned that Edward H. Fetty (May 26 1877 - March 13 1914) was the husband of IVA BOWERS. I was surprised to learn that Edward is buried in Hardy Oak Cemetery, which is where my other grandma's people are buried (tiny little cemetery that some of the locals don't know where is). But (unless Iva is somehow Madora I. Fetty 1873-1902) Iva's name doesn't appear in the Jefferson County burial listings. Madora I and a bunch more Fettys are buried at Hardy Oak. Happy hunting. Jan T

I have several BOWERs in Licking Co, OH that may or may not be related. John BOWER, b ca 1805 in PA married Margaret REARER in 1825 and had Caroline, Joshua, Harriet, Caleb, Mahala, Minerva, Francis Marion, Amanda and Thomas Jefferson. Caroline married Adam RUSLER and Harreit married John RUSLER. Mahla married John DAWSON, Minerva married Wesley BORING, and Amanda married a CHANEY. While these BOWERs are all related, can anyone provide more information, or tell me if there is a relationship between the BOWER and BOWERS families of Licking Co? Or tell me where in PA John BOWER was from? Sandy

My wife's great grandfather was Thomas BAUER who lived first in Pennsylvania and later in Maryland. We have found him in government records, newspaper reports, cemetery records, etc. with all of these spellings: BAUER, BAUR, BOWER, and BOWERS. He was probably like me and didn't care how you spelled his name as long as your check cleared the bank. Hi again everyone, I neglected to tell you, and you should also know... At the bottom of each board is now posted: "Copyright 1996-2001, My Family.com, Inc. All rights reserved. This material is for personal use only. Republication and redissemination, including posting to news groups, is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of MyFamily.com, Inc." Although Rootsweb admin is reassuring everyone that your posts belong to you, the above message has quite a few people concerned. I posted this and point it out to you just so you'll be aware. Colleen
Hi everyone, Once again, a mass mailing to all 25 of my lists.... There are two main topics of concern in this message: 1.) New query boards at Rootsweb & Ancestry 2.) FamilyDiscovery.com (please read. This is NOT another warning) NEW QUERY BOARDS AT ROOTSWEB & ANCESTRY Do you use Rootsweb's GenConnect boards? How about the surname boards at MyFamily.com? Changes were made, effective today, that affect both site's boards and I feel you might want to know about them. There are no longer any GenConnect boards, nor are there any MyFamily.com boards. They are now combined into one master board - one board per surname, county, state, etc. In other words, you'll no longer find a queries board, one for wills, deeds, etc. Placing or searching for a query for great grandfather, John Doe, means at Rootsweb or Ancestry you'll now go to the Doe surname board where every post and/or query under the Doe surname will now be posted. You won't find a separate page for the Doe deeds, wills, etc., nor will the queries be posted at two different sites. ...Everything for one surname, county, state, etc. will be on one board. To reach any of the messages boards whether they be for surnames, localities or topics, just click on either of the two links provided below and you'll be taken to a master page: >From Rootsweb: <http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=main&r=rw>. >From Ancestry: <http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=main&r=an>. You should also know first thing that you will now have to take out an Ancestry login to post messages; you will NOT have to take out a subscription though. And one other thing ~ there are still some bugs in this new system that Rootsweb/ Ancestry/ the-powers-that-be have to work out, but Rootsweb is assuring the board administrators (of which I'm one) that everything should be under control in a couple of weeks. FAMILY DISCOVERY.COM I received a message from Gene Olson, the constant heel-biter of <Family Discovery.com>. :) Following is a cut-and-paste from his message: "...I have been contacted by the NY Times regarding an upcoming story. The reporter doing the story would like to speak with a person who has been scammed by Family Discovery. I suggest that someone who has paid for the service and someone who has had their site linked to should contact me so that I may give you his phone number." I know that at least several of you were ripped off by Family Discovery. Please contact Gene at <gene_olson@compuright.net> and do us all a favor by helping to get these guys put out of business. He's changed the name of his site, by the way, to the Bad Business Web Site, enabling a wider scope. The new URL is <http://www.compuright.net/badbusiness>. As always, please remain vigilant and aware so you don't get ripped off by these people. I don't profess to have all the answers about either subject, especially those new boards. However, if you have questions you're certainly welcome to address them to me at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. I hope you're all having a FANTASTIC Friday evening! :) Colleen
