Hi, I'm new to submitting information, but here goes. I found this on a site about Coffey County Kansas. This is his Biographical Sketch, which was in a book called, "History of the State of Kansas" written by William G. Cutler. "S.W. Bowers was born in Pennsylvania in 1828, and lived in his native State seven years, and moved to Clark County, Ohio, and remained in the State thirteen years, and moved to Champaign County, Illinois, and lived there ten years, and moved to Kansas in the spring of 1870 and located in Burlington, and has been engaged in house and sign painting. Mr. Bowers was married in Champaign County, Illinois, in 1854, to Miss Lora Orme, a native of Ohio, and have two children, Charley and Grace. Mr. Bowers was married again in Burlington, in 1872, to Miss Nellie Laughton, a native of Vermont, and have four children, George, Gerty, Glenn and May." I hope this helps someone out there. Denise

I am searching for George Ernest Bower. All I have for proof of his existance is an old photo with his name on it. I believe his parents to be William Henry and Gertrude Bower. He was possibly born around Buffalo New York in the fall of 1915. I base this on an old postcard from Gertrude. William Henry is a complete puzzle. He was my great uncle born in Greene County, TN and died in New York City in 1955(?). He was the black sheep of the family, possible had two or more wives. His very clean and vague obituary written by my grandmother and his sisters do no mention this or any children, yet I know there were some. I have long wondered about these "lost" cousins. Hoping someone knows. Thanks, Jan

Hi everyone, Below are two topics I had meant to cover in yesterday's Sunday Morning Coffee, however just didn't have the time to. ANCESTRY.COM Have you been having trouble getting through to ancestry.com the past several days? Are you being told it's been removed from the Web? Well, it hasn't. Nor is it just an AOL problem like many people are thinking. Ancestry is experiencing a network problem. There are major servers that are down between some hubs and Ancestry. One of those hubs is AOL. This explanation from someone on another list might help explain the problem a little better: "Basically, the problem is a DNS issue. When you access a Web page you type in something like: http://www.ancestry.com/ and expect your browser to take you to that page--and it usually does just that. But a Web page is really not an address as simple as http://www.ancestry.com/ It is actually located by means of a series of numbers called an IP address. A Domain Name Server (DNS) is used to translate the numbers into a usable address such as ancestry.com. At the present time Ancestry's DNS is not resolving correctly for many Interner Service Providers. The problem started for some users (primarily AOL users) late yesterday afternoon and seems to have spread to quite a few others today." (This message was written on Saturday, 1 Sep) If you'll go to Rootsweb's helpdesk page <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi> you'll see the following message at the top of the page in red: "ACCESS PROBLEMS: Some users may not be able to reach our message boards or the Ancestry.com site. The problem has been resolved, but it may take a couple of days until the changes have propagated to all service providers. We apologize for the inconvenience, and appreciate your patience." Another route people are having success with is using Ancestry's IP address <http://216.10.103.21>. PREVENTING E-MAIL VIRUSES The following comes from another list. Because of the whopping load of messages I receive, I'm trying it myself. I don't know if it works, but hey ... it's sure worth a try! :) "...Along the lines of preventing virii from sending mail to all the addresses in your address book as Outlook Express is highly vulnerable of doing: To avoid spreading computer viruses, create a contact in your email address book with the name :** !0000 with no email address in the details. This contact will then show up as your first contact. If a virus attempts to do a "send all" on your contact list, your pc will put up an error message saying that: "The Message could not be sent. One or more recipients do not have an e-mail address. Please check your Address Book and make sure all the recipients have a valid e-mail address." Your messages to an individual or individual addressees will not be affected. You click on OK and the offending (virus) message would not have been sent to anyone. Of course no changes have been made to your original contacts list. The offending (virus) message may then be automatically stored in your "Drafts" or "Outbox" folder. Go in there and delete the offending message. Problem is solved and virus is not spread. Try this and pass on to your email contacts. The more people that use this technique, the less vulnerable we will be to viruses that spread in this manner!" That's it, cousins. I wish you all a mystical, magical, MAGNIFICENT Monday! :) Colleen

They were in Norwalk, Huron Co OH, on the 1840 Census, but I have not located them after that. Their daughter, Elmira LOVE married Jared SMITH, supposedly in Monroe Co MI, in1848, altho there is no record there. Elmira was my GGranny. Clarissa's father was Silas BOWERS, mother Marvel ? There is a writeup about the early pioneers in the "Firelands Pioneer", Nov1858, which states that Silas BOWERS came into Fairfield Twp in 1816. It describes how, in early 1818, he froze to death while hunting deer. In addition to Clarissa, he and Marvel also had a son Silas, who was also a minor when Silas died. Ring any bells? LABOR DAY QUIZ As is true with just about all our holidays, over the years Labor Day has evolved from its intended purpose of celebration into a "last fling of summer" festival. Originally, speeches were given by prominent men and women who placed emphasis on the economic, spiritual and civil significance of this holiday. Labor organizations sponsored activities to pay tribute to workers' contributions and honor the strength, prosperity and well-being of the country. Speeches were followed by massive displays and huge parades. After a while, the large industrial centers tired of these unwieldy celebrations. Today, Labor Day has come to be recognized as the unofficial end of the summer season as vacationers take one last advantage of the waning hot season while September presses in to mark the beginning of autumn. In many parts of the U.S., a student's summer vacation season ends with Labor Day. Many colleges and schools begin clases immediately after Labor Day. So, let's see what you know about this holiday. This five-question quiz should perk you right up this morning! :) 1. What is the reason for celebrating Labor Day? 2. When was Labor Day first celebrated? 3. What U.S. President proclaimed the first national observance of Labor Day? 4. In what year did Congress make Labor Day a national holiday? 5. Do any other countries celebrate Labor Day? If so, name at least 3 of them. Well, how'd you do? (You'll find the answers at the very bottom of today's Coffee.) Today's Coffee is a brief one, and for that I apologize. I have in-life family commitments today, but wanted to spend at least a little time with all of you. To you September babies - the cousins and I wish you a very happy and exciting year ahead. Happy Birthday! You are loved! Family ... it's what we're all about. Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you today. I wish each of you a week filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.' (Answers to Labor Day Quiz) 1. Hi Dave, Your Bour/Boor data is very welcome here! :) No attachments can be sent through the Rootsweb servers, hence the list itself cannot receive attachments. If you have material you'd like to submit for display at the Homestead or Cottage, you need to send it to me. I just need to know what you have and when you're ready to send your data so I can watch for your attachment, okay? You can contact me at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. The only requirement is that we don't display data on any living people. Other than that, you're good to go for pretty much everything. I wish you a SUPER Sunday! :) Colleen David Bour wrote: > > I'll post in here that my Bour's, Boor's, Bower, or however you choose to > spell it are also Norfolk/Suffolk region. ON POSTING MESSAGES With everyone returning to the family after their summer haitus, it's important to remind our newbies and novices of some query-posting pointers: 1.) Don't type your message all in capital letters. It is very difficult to read a message so-styled, and in netiquette it's considered yelling. 2.) Give your message a subject line proper to the material in your message. Subject lines are your introduction lines and capture a reader's attention. Make yours count! If you're not sure of how to create a subject line watch what everyone else is saying in theirs, and do the same. Or, you can contact me with your material and I'll give you a couple ideas <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. 3.) When posting queries, please give as much information on your lines as possible to help us identify your ancestors. Names, dates, and places are critically important! Give as much of that information as you can. Also, please proofread your query before posting it to clean up grammatical and punctuation errors that often make it difficult to understand what you're saying. 4.) **EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY IMPORTANT:** Please... DO NOT post information about living people in your messages. This is for your protection and that of your loved ones. Identity thieves are always happy to assume an identity if they can get enough of the right information on your family, and we genealogists are their favorite targets! Keep in mind, most credit card companies have your mother's maiden name as your password. Protect yourself and don't identify her! In addition, we don't research the living, so we really don't need to see their information anyway. 5.) How long has it been since you last posted? Remember, new cousins are finding us everyday. You should try to post at least once a month. 6.) Have you posted and not gotten a response? Try re-wording your last post and add more information. Perhaps nobody can identify your lines from the information you've already given. I might not descend from your great grandmother directly, but from one of her siblings, and I also might not know that person's parents. Only your posting those siblings will help me identify and tie into you. 7.) Another important point... Inline Cousin #1: "I'm a lurker, simply monitoring the list looking for my ancestor, Quasi Doe. Nobody's posted anything about my lines and I need to trim the number of messages I'm receiving, so I'll unsubscribe this one." Inline Cousin #2: "I'm brand new, scared to death to post. I want to find someone who's related to Quasi Doe. How do I do it? Where do I send to? I've been sitting here for several months now (lurking) and I still haven't seen anybody researching my line." ...And so it goes. A lost opportunity for two inline-cousins because neither one posted and now, one is gone from the list. Don't let this happen to you. TRIVIA FROM THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR I found this little goodie at <http://www.genealogybulletin.com/archives/HTML/etc70.html> while surfing the Web earlier this week. I thought you all might be interested in reading it. According to a tidbit from genealogical society bulletins, 78 percent of the Union Army in the Civil War was comprised of lads 15 to 18 years old. Data gleaned from government records reveals figures that may surprise you. Here are the statistics from the total enlistment of Northern soldiers during the Civil War: Age Number of Personnel 10 ............ 25 11 ............ 34 12 ............225 13 ............380 14 ...........1602 15 ........104,987 (3.5%) 16 ........231,051 (8.0%) 17 ........884,981 (28.0%) 18 ......1,158,434 (38.5%) 19-22 .....617,511 (20.5%) 22-44 ......52,696 45+ .....Not given How old was your ancestor when he served in the Civil War? Keep his age in mind as you see portrayals or read battle accounts. How would your 17-year-old son fare? LET'S REMEMBER OUR COUSINS WHO CAN'T GET OUT With the start of school, we begin to settle back into our homes. For those of you still lucky enough to be able to continue researching outside the home, please remember we have cousins who are shut-ins and watch for those morsels of data posted to the list. If, during your searches at libraries, archives, historical societies, and cemeteries you should come across our surnames, please... won't you extract the data to share with us here? Variant spellings are very welcome, too! With your added material they just might be able to tie-in to another cousin, and it could be YOU! :) After all, it's family ... and that's what we're all about. Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you today. It's an interlude I truly enjoy. I wish each of you a week filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'
