Below is a summary of your request and our response. We will assume your issue has been resolved if we do not hear from you within 48 hours. Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you. Subject --------------------------------------------------------------- Removal of Aqueduct, How do I Discussion Thread --------------------------------------------------------------- Response (Wendy) - 11/19/2001 01:12 PM Hello Family Tree Maker Customer, I am sending this message to everyone who has asked about the Aqueduct file as it seems that a mass email was sent over the weekend that is causing great concern among Family Tree Maker 9.0 customers. Please read the entire contents of this message and feel free to forward it to all of those who may have been on the mailing list who started notifying people over the weekend. The aqueduct.txt file is originally set up for our beta testers with their consent to help us track and log any problems they encounter while testing Family Tree Maker. After beta testing is completed, our programmers here at Genealogy.com then deactivate the file. Unfortunately, creation of the aqueduct.txt file was not deactivated for the final Family Tree Maker Version 9.0 release. Since we became aware of this issue, we have found a simple solution. Please know that Genealogy.com does not have access to the information logged by the file. We would only have had access if you had specifically sent it to us by email. We have created an update that all customers using version 9.0 should download and install. In addition to the Aqueduct issue, this update also addresses an issue that was brought to our attention after Family Tree Maker 9.0 was produced and released where source citations may be inadvertently altered by utilizing certain functions within the program. In order to protect your family file, please download and install this update today. Please note that there are 2 versions of the update. The proper one for you to use depends upon where you purchased your copy of Family Tree Maker version 9.0. If you bought your copy of Family Tree Maker version 9 directly from Genealogy.com or it came in an envelope, download the update from http://www.Genealogy.com/update/. If you bought Family Tree Maker from a retail store or it came in a box, download the update from http://www.Genealogy.com/newinfo/. All of this information is available in further detail by visiting our Online Help Center at www.genealogy.com/help. For the complete article on the Aqueduct issue, please see: http://genealogy.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/genealogy.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp. php?p_sid=EZBHMC*f&p_lva=&p_faqid=476 For the complete article on the Source Citation issue please see: http://genealogy.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/genealogy.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp. php?p_faqid=490 We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused. TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur ancestors or any of the 81+ variant spellings we research that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. Our home is Bower Community, located at <http://bowercommunity.com>. There, we currently have two sites: The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our primary homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. Smaller is our sister site, the Bower Cottage, which houses most of our projects including an online GEDCOM fed by cousins from our research groups. Find the Cottage is at <http://bowercommunity.com/cottage>. FAMILY DISCOVERY IS AT IT AGAIN These people just don't give up, do they? It seems they've begun a new campaign, this time under their GenRelated pseudonym. Please pass the word so we can thwart yet another of their attempts. Newbies, those of us who are experienced Web genealogists, know already to steer clear, far and wide, from anything sent by Family Discovery or their sister sites, one being GenRelated. Now, you need to know it, too. These people are scammers. Are you new to the family? Please send a message to me <ladyaudris@earthlink.net> and I'll send a copy of my all-too-familiar messages regarding these people. Should you receive a message from <FamilyDiscovery.com> or <GenRelated@cjb.net>, please forward it to me with the headers. Although it's over a year-old now, an ongoing effort is being done to get them shut down. (Actually, as a combined force, we've been more successful at getting them kicked off from their various ISPs than anything else. At least when they're offline, they can't rip anyone off!) FAMILY TREE MAKER, VERSION 9: A WARNING It has come to my attention that Family Tree Maker may be up to no good with the latest version (9) of their genealogy program. Since I don't use FTM with any degree of proficiency (I use PAF), I'm passing along this warning by way of copy and paste. Those of you who use FTM will want to read this carefully: "Mattel, the parent company of FTM has included tracking software in Version 9 which keeps track of everything you do on the internet and sends a log of your surfing habits to Mattel every time you log on. The log file is called "aqueduct" and can be found in the root directory of your C drive. I have deleted the file and gone back to version 8. "I discovered {this] quite by accident. In an unrelated attempt to fix one of my screwups on my hardrive, I discovered the file called "aqueduct" and opened it as I didn't know what it was. I discovered that it was a log of all my surfing habits and I now know, it covered the period from when I installed the FTM 9 upgrade to the date I discovered it and deleted it. I didn't realize it was a FTM by product until I tried to open FTM (after deleting aqueduct) and I got an error message saying "Aqueduct" was missing -- it seems that without the file, FTM version 9 will not run at all. Since I detest tracking software of any kind, I uninstalled FTM version 9 and reinstalled FTM version 8. Note: You will have to open and rename your database backup copy as any database file that you opened and stored in version 9 will be useless." I won't mention the person's name here since our messages go into public archives. However, if you use FTM and want to know who has issued this warning, please write me offline and I'll pass the address along to you. Or, if there are many of you wanting the name and email addy, will send your names and addies to the person so s/he can post to you. One way or another, you will be put in contact, if that's your desire. :) DID YOU KNOW ...? ... turkeys originated in North and Central America, and evidence indicates that they have been around for over 10 million years? ... that out of the 102 Pilgrims who came to America in the Mayflower, just 51 survived to participate in the "First Thanksgiving?" Ninety Wampanoag Indians were at that first feast. ... that the first Thanksgiving lasted for three days and was called a "harvest feast" by Massasoit, the Wampanoag Indian chief? ... that the Pilgrims didn't use forks at the first feast (Thanksgiving) in 1621? They used a knife, a spoon, a large napkin and their fingers, and might have shared plates and drinking vessels. ... that according to the Guiness Book of World Records, the largest dressed weight (cooked, with dressing) recorded for a turkey is 39.09 kg (86 lb.) on December 12, 1989? (I wonder how long it took to cook?) ... more than 45 million turkeys are cooked and eaten during Thanksgiving? ... that nobody knows for certain that turkeys were eaten at the first feast? Then how *did* the turkey become the main course? One story tells of how Queen Elizabeth of 16th century England was chowing down on roast goose during a harvest festival. When news was delivered to her that the Spanish Armada had sunk on it way to attack her beloved England, the queen was so pleased that she order a second goose to celebrate the great news. Thus, the goose became the favorite bird at harvest time in England. When the Pilgrims arrived in America from England, roasted turkey replaced roasted goose as the main cuisine because wild turkeys were more abundant and easier to find than geese. ... that it was Benjamin Franklin who said, "I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen as the representation of our country... the turkey is a much more respectable bird and a true original native of America?" ... that George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, but it was President Lincoln who, in 1863, made the day official by proclaiming the last Thursday in November as a national day of "Thanksgiving?" ... that Jingle Bells, the popular Christmas song, was actually written for Thanksgiving? The song was composed in 1857, by James Pierpont, and was originally called One Horse Open Sleigh. Hi everyone, For those of you who posted to the list earlier today, Rootsweb list mail was down for approximately 12 hours from about 3:30 AM to about 3:30 PM MST today (Sunday, 11/18/01). The unfortunate part is that any mail sent to the lists during that time period was lost since it wasn't queued. So you will need to resend anything you sent that didn't get through to the lists. This fellow shows up in the Jefferson County KS newspapers but doesn't belong to my batch of Bowers: "Cleve Bower had a very painful accident last week, when he smashed two of his fingers." The Perry Mirror, Thursday, March 4, 1909 (Thompsonville). Apparently of the same batch (not mine!) is Miss Bertha Bower: "Miss Bertha Bower visited the school Tuesday afternoon." (same issue, same paper, also marked Thompsonville.) Same issue: "Mrs. Chas Roark and daughters, Ethel and Mabelle, spent Thursday and Friday at the home of her uncle, C L BOWER. Mrs. Roark was en route to Arkansas to join her husband, who has a position as engineer there. (Thompsonville) My Bower family was in the area at the time, but they thought their name was BOWERS. Wasn't till the reading of Great-Grandpa's will till they found out they were not BOWERS but were spelled BOWER. Jan T

I have a copy of the will of Henry Bower(s), who died in Plain Twp., Wayne Co., OH.. I don't think he is my connection but not real sure yet. There was no will so his estate settlement was handled via request of his wife (Catherine) by Christian Mellinger. When I had my other program, I subscribed to I think Ancestry or something similar and found Thomas on World Family Tree # 869, but I could never access where the information came from or who it came from. Since this was a g-grandfather and family was so poor not much of a paper trail to follow, I let it drop with what I could find on census reports. If this Thomas is truly my line, he married in Indiana, but John W. and Henry were both born in PA; so assume there was family both places? Sorry can't be of more help Mary Lou-KS
Hello, I am afraid I do not have much on the other children of Johann Mathias Bauer, but I have a little about him. First, Johann Mathias Bauer's will only mentions: "...sale to be Dividet among my childern. My son Frederick to have his share and my son Michael to have his share. My son Jacob to have his share. My son Benjamin to have his share. My Daughter Maria, her share I bequeath to her son [Charls Daniel (?)]. My Daughter Catrine to have her share and the childern of my deceased Daughter Susana, late wife of Daniel Witmer, to have her share and share alike and my Daughter Elizabeth, wife of Henry Witmer, to have her share. My son Samuel shall Draw no share out of my estate as I dit give him in share a certain tract of land I sold to him here to fore." The (Northumberland Co, PA) biography posted at the Bower Web site states: "J. Matthias Bauer was a native of Berks county, Pa., born near Reading March 6, 1754. Tradition and records apparently relating to him credit him with service in the Revolutionary war. About 1794 he came with his family to Northumberland county and settled in that part of Jordan township then still known as Jackson township, on the farm now owned by Jonathan M. Byerly. He himself erected the first set of buildings there, having been a carpenter. But he took to farming, having "taken up" and purchased between five hundred and six hundred acres of land; 133 acres of this land have never been out of the family name since he took it up. He was a small man, industrious and energetic, and it is related that he enjoyed a "scrap" occasionally. He prospered in his work, and was a useful member of society. He died May 1, 1837, and is buried at the Stone Valley (Zion's) Church, having been a member of the Lutheran congregation of that church. Politically he was a strong Democrat. His wife; Catharine, born Jan. 1, 1760, died Nov. 25, 1836, and she is also buried at the Stone Valley Church. She bore him children as follows: Frederick, who died in Indiana; Jacob, who died in Ohio; Michael, who died in Buffalo Valley, Union Co., Pa.; Samuel; Elizabeth, Mrs. Henry Witmer; and another daughter who married Samuel Wolf, and they settled in Buffalo Valley, Pennsylvania." By the way, I see that I forgot to mention their son Samuel in my first post. Finally, I note that "A Genealogist's Guide to Burials in Northumberland County PA, Vol. III, 4th Edition", compiled by Joseph A. Meiser and Sarah Roadarmel Meiser (1997) list the following for Zion Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery in Lower Mahanoy Twp, Northumberland Co, PA: "Bauer, J. Mathias 3/6/1754-5/1/1887 Catherine Helcot 1/1/1760-11/25/1836 (Bower) s/o Michael & Margaret (Steinbach) Bauer, Jacob (Williams Co, Ohio) Cath Bingeman Hain 11/20/1780-2/14/1864 s/o J. Mathias & Cath. (Helcot) Bauer, Mary A. 1/22/1814-6/21/1886 Elijah Byerly 10/5/1813-3/19/1873 d/o Jacob & Cath Bingeman (Hain)" I have more information on Johann Mathias Bauer and his wife if it is of interest. Lynne > Lynn, I am interested in your OH. Bower (Jacob). What information do you > have on him? Date of birth, where did he live in OH., who he married, etc. > Thanks, Jeanette
I'm new to this but would like to list my family. My gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather is J Matthias Bauer. His son, Frederick (my gr-gr-gr-grandfather), moved to Indiana and that is where our family line comes in. Frederick Bowers (change in spelling of Bauer) married Anna Catherine (Hannah) Wolf. Their children were John (my gr-gr-grandfather), Jacob, Elizabeth, Michael, Sarah, and Harriet. John married Margaret Castleman and their children were Henry Castleman Bowers ( my gr-grandfather), Elizabeth, David, and Jacob. Henry married Catherine Coonrod and their children were Warren, Peter, Mary, Francis, Son, Son, Peter. He then married Mary Converset and their children are Alise, Henry Lewis, Henry Bernard, Louis (my grandfather), Bennet, Stephen, Annette, and Emma. Louis married Nora Helmke and their children were Arthur, Agnes, Bernadine, Dorothy, Donald, Herbert (my father), Alice, and Richard. Would enjoy hearing from anyone who is related through this line. Vicki
Lynn, I am interested in your OH. Bower (Jacob). What information do you have on him? Date of birth, where did he live in OH., who he married, etc. Thanks, Jeanette ----- Original Message ----- From: Lynne Ranieri <LKRanieri@home.com> To: <BOWER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: mmmm/11/2001 7:34 PM Subject: Re: [BOWER] SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE > Mary, > My Bauer/Bower ancestor, Johann Mathias Bauer, was apparently born in Berks > County ca. 1754. Good evening fellow Bower(s) by any spelling, Yes it is a good evening,in spite of the fact the Crosswinds is down again. I have decided to move my site in hopes of getting better service, but do not have the faintest idea where that will be. Am going to leave http://indbow.crosswinds.net where it is because I paid for a year of service that I can not get into. Marilyn, in all my notes I know I have something for you but have no idea at present where that is. I lost over 400 hrs of work because of Crosswinds and it was a beautiful site. As soon as I have time I will get it up someplace. Have a good week and love each other. Life is too short for anger or hate. See you all soon on the web. Hi Colleen, Am wondering when you are going to update the GEDCOM files at the Cottage? I sent you my BAUER info some time ago - hope you got it, if not I will send it again. I have a big 60 birthday coming on the 16th of this month and it would be a great present to see my family listed. thanks for all your hard work and love that you show all of us. Mary Lou - It's hard to say. I know SO very little about these Bowers. In fact, for the last two years I've been searching as Bower with no "S" because she's Laura Bower on the marriage certificate. I cannot remember where I saw it (on a census form, I believe) but I THINK her parents were both born in VA and came to IN before she was born. I'll sure keep you in mind if I come up with anything though..... Marilyn Shields "Mary L.
