Last year I purchased a 5 volume set of biographies "North Carolina, The Old North State and the New" published in 1941 by The Lewis Publishing Company. I understand this Book is out of print. There are a couple of Biographies on Bowers Families., for Colleen's challenge, follows is most of the biography of WILLIAM RAY BOWERS - if anyone can claim this family and would be interested in the full biography please email me and I will send a photo copy via snail mail. PLEASE NOTE: This Bowers Family is not related to me, although his father must have fought along side a relative of mine (unrelated to my Bauers) during the civil war with John Hunt Morgan's Raiders. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WILLIAM RAY BOWERS, a farmer of Halifax County, living in the vicinity of Littleton, was born in the county, April 2, 1880, his parents being WILLIAM EZRA and SALLIE MAUDE (HUNTER) BOWERS. His father, whose birth occurred in Halifax County, January 19, 1846, was educated in a private school and then engaged in farming and also was a horse dealer but retired from active business about four years prior to his death, which occurred May 9, 1928. He was a soldier of the Civil War, having enlisted in 1863 in a cavalry regiment, with which he served until the close of hostilities. He was one of Morgan's raiders and was wounded in an engagement. The Democratic party always received his stanch support and he was chosed to represent Halifax County in the State Legilature and also filled the officed of county commissioner, county treasurer and magistrate. He belonged to the Baptist church, in which he served as deacon, and he was a member of the Masonic Lodge. His wife, who was about a year his junior, was born in Halifax County and died in February, 1912. They had a family of seven children: Pattie Leah, the wife of W.H. Kimball, of Henderson, North Carolina: Mary Ellen, who is the widow of W.B. Daniel and resides in Henderson; Joseph Paul, deceased: William Ray, whose name introduces this record; Daisy B., and Annie D., both at home; and Margaret I., the wife of David L. Wilson, living on the old home place. After attending private schools, W. Ray Bowers continued his education at Oak Ridge for two years, after which he was with his father on the home farm until the father's death. He has sinced lived on his present farm of 1,200 acres and in addition to general farming he owns and operates a cotton gin. On the 16th of February, 1916, Mr. Bowers was married to Miss SALLIE EGERTON GARDNER, a daughter of Winfield Scott and Sallie Egerton Gardner, of Warren County, North Carolina... (>>> there is more on the Gardner family...) Mrs. W.R. Bowers was born in Warren County, December 22 1888, attended public schools until she completed the high school course and continuted her education in Louisburg College, after which she taught school for a short time. Mr. and Mrs. Bowers have become parents of Four children: Pryor Winfield, born January 28 1917, who was educated in public schools, at Oak Ridge Military Institute and at Wake Forest College; Thomas Egerton, born June 23 1918, who was also educated in grammar and high schools, at Oak Ridge Military Institute and at Wake Forest College, being graduated from the last named with the class of 1940; William Ezra, born August 31, 1920, who is a student in North Carolina State College at Raleigh, and Sallie Ray, born June 24, 1925. Both Mr. and Mrs Bowers have membership in the Baptist church and are interested in all that pertains to the material, intellectual and moral progress of their community. Fraternally Mr. Bowers is a Mason and his political opinions are in accord with the principles of the Democratic Party.

Nothing is known about him until he enlisted in Co. E, 13th Reg't, Indiana Volunteers in 1861. He was discharged in 1864. He married Louisa Talbert in Shelby Co., IN on 11 Nov 1866. Sometime after the 1870 census, Jacob and Louisa moved to Cassville, Barry Co., MO. Jacob died in Cassville on 14 Oct 1899. Grainger Co., TN is where the Andrew Bowers family lived. Shelby Co., IN is where Andrew's brother, David, lived. Each had a son named Jacob, but neither is the Jacob who is the subject of this post. It is speculated this is the son of another brother. John, also of Grainger Co., has been eliminated. That leaves as possible candidates, William, Henry and Jacob, all Bowers who appear in the records of Grainger Co. for a short time and are suspected to be brothers of Andrew. Ehrich on March 1, 1994 and is issued with the permission of Mrs. Erna Schlepp, Chairman, 75th Jubilee Book Committee. "Of Java's business places when the town celebrated its 50th Golden Jubilee, Bauer & Sons was one of the oldest businesses which was operated by the Bauers: Fred, John and his sister, Evelyn. After their death, it was vacant for a time and in 1960 it was sold." "Bauer & Stoller (John Bauer, Jacob Stoller) General Store" "John Bauer, Jacob Hoff, and Jacob Stoller came from Eureka, constructed a large store, 26x50, and stocked a fine line of general merchandise, opening for business in December of 1900 under the firm name of Bauer, Hoff, and Stoller. In 1905 an addition was built on the south side in order to expand the business. Mr. Hoff left the partnership in 1908, with Bauer and Stoller continuing the venture. From about 1904 until the middle of 1913, this store housed the post office, as Mr. Stoller had been appointed postmaster; and, with his efficient deputy, Miss Annette Stoller, had given the patrons very creditable service. In 1915, Jacob Stoller dissolved the partnership. The firm then operated as Bauer & Sons for many years,--in later years by Miss Evelyn Bauer and her brothers, John Jr., and Fred E. When, in 1950, Java celebrated its fiftieth anniversary, Bauer & Sons was the oldest pioneer store remaining, not only in Java, but in Walworth county as well. A disastrous fire in the later years of the store's existence severely damaged the original portion of the store; the salvaged portion was remodeled, and the family has been the site of Pfitzer Creamery and later Paint Store, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Chris J. Pfitzer,--and for a time, housed Dee's Beauty Salon." "At about the same time grain elevators were being erected along the course of the railway. These were the Bauer, Hoff & Stoller Elevator, the Bagley Elevator Company, the Crown Elevator, and the Potter, Garrick and Potter Elevator. Prior to the establishment of banking facilities in Java, Bauer, Hoff, and Stoller paid their own grain checks at their store, while the Bagley Elevator Company and Crown Elevator made arrangements with John Hofmeyer to pay their grain tickets." "In 1945, Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. purchased the Dakota Public Service Company....MDU elected to make Selby a district headquarters town in 1972 and appointed M. L. "Radar" Bauer to assume the role of district manager.... The average cost of electricity in 1910 for a resident of the area was almost 600 percent greater than the same amount of electricity used today. Electric service has come a long way in the past 65 years." --------------------- "The Java Bloomers - (standing, left to right, maiden names): Gertie Banik, Lorraine Schott, Anne Banik, Hulda Bauer, Bertha Spiry. Seated, Martha Bauer, John Spiry (catcher), Hertha Bauer and Pauline Schlepp. JAVA BLOOMERS In May of 1909, a number of Java ladies organized a ladies ball team. This newly organized team was known as the "Java Bloomers". On Sunday, May 30, they played the "Heavy Weights", a team of nine 300 pounders in and around Java" ------------------------------------- ...and another fine musical number was the Miss Vivian Bauer's solo. "Bauer's had the first postoffice in Java." Eva Bauer - Garden Club Mrs. Fred Bauer - Campfire Girls leader Mrs. Bill Bauer - Sew and So Extension Club LaVerne Bauer Post No. 275 of the American Legion "It was decided to name the post the LaVerne Bauer Post, No. 275 of the American Legion in honor of Flight Officer L. V. Bauer, only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bauer, Jr., who died in a plane crash over China in October of 1944, and who is buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery at San Francisco." JOHN AND LYDIA BAUER "John Bauer was born Jan. 17, 1888 on a farm in Campbell county, where his parents had homesteaded. Later his dad bought a farm one mile southeast of Eureka, where he grew up and attended grade school. In 1900 he was put in charge of the farm and his dad went to Java and started the first store, in partnership with Hoff & Stoller. The store was named Bauer, Hoff and Stoller. The post office was also housed in this store for a few years. Later the farm was rented out and the family moved to Java. In 1908, John went west and filed claim on a homestead near White Butte, but remained there only a year before he returned to Java. John, his dad and brother Fred bought the Hoff & Stoller partnership and named the store Bauer and Sons. On April 20, 1912, John married Lillian Heerwald and to this couple two children were born: Duane, born Jan. 23, 1914 married Dagney Nelson. The Duane Bauer family now reside in Savanna, Ill. Irene, born Aug. 30, 1913, married Leonard Rickard and they are living in Provo, South Dakota. The John Bauer family were faithful members of the Reformed church. John remained working in the store and also did some crop farming on the Bauer farm. After the death of his wife, Lillian, he remarried. On Dec. 9, 1919, John married Lydia Fiechtner, who was born Jan. 26, 1902 on a farm three miles east of Java, where she grew up and at- tended grade school for four years. Lydia went to Mobridge to work and also attended school there, but later quit school and went to work full time, until she got married. John and Lydia had four children. One son, LaVerne, born May 22, 1922, served his country in World War II? as a Flight Officer and Pilot of a B-29, and was killed in China in 1944. A daughter, Marjorie (Mrs. Herbert Buechler), born Jan. 28, 1924, is teaching in the Bowdle school and lives on a farm north of Bowdle. Della, (Mrs. Julian Ackerman), born June 19, 1926, taught school at Wessington Springs, Webster, Herreid and Oceanside, Calif. They now reside at Harlingen, Texas. Delores, (Mrs. Harvey Teske), born March 4, 1928, was employed at Daytons in Minneapolis, and taught school for one year before she was married. She passed away in 1968 in Aberdeen. The Bauer family have 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. John was owner and operator of Bauer and Sons until 1960 when he passed away. Lydia remained living in Java, where she still resides. She was a life long member of the St. Pauls Lutheran Church, became a member of the Ladies Aid in 1945, now the A.L.C.W., and served four years as local group chairman of India Missions and two years as group chair- man. She was appointed District Group Chairman of North and South Dakota, where she served for two years and also was a charter member of the Church Altar Guild, which was organized in 1960 and is still a member."

Smaller is our sister site, the Bower Cottage, which houses most of our projects including an online GEDCOM fed by cousins from our research groups. Find the Cottage is at <http://bowercommunity.com/cottage>. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the fifth in a series of Coffees dedicated to showing our newbies the "cyberspace ropes" and those novices who might still need the lessons. Today's subject on virus hoaxes will arm you with yet another tool to protect your computer and (hopefully) keep you from coming down with the Chicken Little syndrome! :) ABOUT COMPUTER VIRUS HOAXES Hoaxes are indirectly related to viruses ~ not because they cause malicious harm to your computer, but because they replicate or propagate themselves. They have been known to start off as a prank, but tend to get out of hand and never die. Hoaxes are usually warnings about "virus alerts" and tend to feed off people's fears and their desire to stop viruses. They can also be a letter from the small child missing or dying of cancer, which plays on your sense of humanity. Unlike a virus, a hoax can not propagate itself; a hoax relies upon good people with good intentions to spread.... You love the email list(s) you belong to. The people are soooo nice and sooo helpful! Then your inbox seems to explode with "the" message and certainly elevates your blood pressure: "WARNING: DO NOT OPEN.... yada yada yada ...your hard drive will be erased (or some equally horrific thing)!!!" This warning is filled with CAPITALIZED WORDS and lots of exclamation marks!!!!! "Tell everyone you know!!! Send this everyone in your address book!!!" The message came from your mom, sister, brother, best friend, acquaintance, *someone/anyone* who cares about you and your computer ~ so it must be fact! "Oh, NO!" You don't want your listmates to suffer those consequences! So you send it to the list right away. Just a short while later, you can't understand why you're now getting all these messages filled with irritation from people telling you that it was a hoax; that you should have checked it out first. Yet, all you were trying to do was help, right? You didn't know. Unfortunately, tender newbie, you were slammed with what I call the Chicken Little syndrome. ("The sky is falling, the sky is falling!") Without fail, this syndrome seems to strike EVERY newbie (a long time ago, even me!) unless they're warned in advance. So, here's your warning: 90% of the virus warning messages you receive will be, and are virus HOAXES. Most of them have been circulating for years, though not as far as YOU would know it ... and that's only because you haven't been on the Web long enough. And how do you keep from become one of the Chicken Little statistics? Fortunately, it's easy and doesn't require any modifications to your computer. But it DOES require a mindset adjustment. Before you allow yourself to succumb to that compulsive need to do that good deed and "help and warn" everyone, fall back to genealogy's cardinal rule and become the genealogist that you are (or are hoping to be): "Believe NONE of what you hear and only HALF of what you read. PROVE EVERYTHING!" By that I mean calm down, become the skeptic that you should be ~ remembering that (again) 90% of the virus warning messages you receive will be, and are virus HOAXES ~ and do some research... 1. Look for the common CAPITALIZED WORDS and those exclamation marks!!!! 2. The dire straits of the message, describing the virus as having horrid destructive powers ("crash your hard drive," etc.) often with the ability to send itself by email. 3. It's usually from an individual (the friend of my sister's brother-in-law, or some such strung-out relationship), sometimes from a company, but never from the cited source. 4. It says something like, "This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it." 5. It urges you to alert eveyone you know, and usually tells you this more than once. There are other red flags to watch for, but those above are the most common ones. To make doubly sure, your next step should be to head for one of the following sites to see if it is indeed, a hoax: Symantec Virus Encyclopedia <http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html/> CIAC Internet Hoaxes <ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html> Computer Virus Myths & Hoaxes <www.Vmyths.com> About.com Computer Virus Hoax Resources <urbanlegends.about.com/culture/urbanlegends/msubvir.htm> Urban Legends Reference Pages <www.snopes.com/> Widespread Virus Myths <www.stiller.com/myths.htm> I have Symantec heading the list intentionally. If you're sitting on an actual virus warning and not a hoax, I know for sure than Symantec will let you know. In my experience, the other sites deal primarily with hoaxes and urban legends as opposed to Symantec's real warnings and hoax alerts. TEN CLUES THAT YOUR COMPUTER MAY BE INFECTED I've told you about the viruses; I've told you how to safeguard your computer from them. However, not all computer glitches can be attributed to viruses. Sometimes freezes, crashes, or "general protection faults" are the result of normal operation, faulty hardware, programming errors, or insufficient memory; but some tell-tale events are almost always the result of a computer virus infestation. Below is a list of computer virus symptoms to watch out for: 1. Programs take longer to load. Memory-intensive operations take a lot of time to start or your hard drive operates constantly when you haven't asked it to open a file. 2. A change in dates against the filenames in the directory. When the virus modifies a file the operating system changes the date stamp. 3. The floppy disk or hard disk is suddenly accessed without logical reason. 4. Increased use of disk space and growth in file size (the virus attaches itself to many files). 5. Abnormal write-protect errors. The virus trying to write to a protected disk. 6. Strange characters appear in the directory listing of filenames. 7. Strange messages like "Type Happy Birthday Joshi" (Joshi Virus) or "Driver Memory Error" (kak.worm) appear on the screen and in documents. One virus will even try to "eat" the period typed into a DOS command line, as when you are trying to run a program like program.exe. 8. Strange graphic displays such as falling letters or a bouncing ball appear on screen. 9. Programs may cause the computer to get hung up or not work at all. 10. Junk characters overwrite text in document or data files. When dealing with viruses, remember that your knowledge is one of your computer's best defenses. You don't have to become an expert, but you should have a feeling for what viruses can and can't do. Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date, and keep good backups of all your data. FYI LINKS a. I'm looking for Baures (yes, it is spelled this way) from the SE corner of Minnesota. Specifically, in Fillmore and Mower Counties. I have also seen this name spelled Bauers. The documents that I have, which are few, the name is spelled Baures. If anyone can be of help, I would appreciate it. Such lineage originated around 1595 in Oberurbach, Wuerrtemburg, Germany. My gggrandfather, Johannes Bauer b. 1848 Oberurbach , parents Jacob Bauer and Dorothea Weller, left Germany sometime prior to 1872 - he arrived in Melbourne, Australia in December 1872 onboard the ship "Vernon" which sailed from Liverpool, England in October. I would love to find out when and where he left Germany (there is some speculation that he went to USA first in seach of gold) but I have been unable to locate any info on him between his birth in 1848 and his Australian arrival in 1872. He married and died in Australia. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Faye, Australia
Collen - I have enjoyed the many bits of information over the last 8 months, but... it is now time to get out of this loop. How can I ?? Thanks Karl Bauer on the Big Isle of Hawaii
