Colleen, I am going to be in hospital for a while, so can you take me off the bower e-mail list until I can get back to you. I really enjoy reading all the listings, but have not found any of my connections yet. Good luck with all your work on the Bower web. Hope to be well enough to join back up with all the Bower cousin's out there on the wave's. Barbara Bower Argo bargo@arbuckleonline Thanks
Hi, Colleen, My two cents worth: * a webring sounds fine, although I'm not too clear on the benefits, either; if it helps get more hits on our sights and helps spread the word about our Bower, etc families; it's sounds good to me.... * as far as awards, I'm pretty wishy-washy on that idea; lots of work for what benefit? * the Continuum has been an interest of mine and I hope it will expand; as Wanda and I have found out, you don't have to be a computer genius to do a webpage; just have an interest in doing it; you can find lots of on-line tutorials to help, such as HTML Goodies at www.htmlgoodies.earthweb.com; once you get thru the basics, I would suggest finding yourself a mentor; I had one, and he helped me a lot....if you decide to use one of the "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" web designs pages, be a little cautious in what you choose; some sites are very annoying to visitors; one I can think of off-hand which is, is MyFamily.com * a logo is a good idea; we have some graphics experts on the list and I'm sure they can come up with something we all can live with *the store; well, maybe, eventually; I would much rather see our time and energies directed toward putting useful Bower, etc. info on-line.... * the chat room; not something I am interested in personally, but for those that are, it could be fun and a good way to meet other family members.... Colleen, Apology accepted. Now to you that think you can't. YES, you can. I am 63 years old, of average intelligence, and a business owner with a disabled husband. If I can do it anyone can. Ask for help, I did, after much encouragement, bunches of encouragement. It is not that hard and help is available. Even when you bug them to no end. Right Mary? Now, please, think about all those names you have that need to be out here, where we can see them. We will all help if you let us. I will sign off with this closing: I have to be encouraged and I now want to encourage you. We need your info as much as you need ours. Please share. Thank you Wanda http://www.crosswinds.net/~indbow/index.html

Hi cousins, I inadvertently omitted our newest addition to the Continuum (state/country project) this morning when I responded to Lynne's questions. We currently have one country and NINE states represented ~~ Australia Missouri California New York Illinois Ohio INDIANA Pennsylvania Michigan Wisconsin Indiana is hosted by Wanda Roberts <wmrobert@nalu.net>. Under the guidance of cousin Mary Teeter, Wanda has worked extremely hard for nearly a year to learn the HTML coding necessary to build her site. Please forgive my oversight, Wanda; it truly was unintentional. :( To the rest of the cousins, will any of you come forward and volunteer to help benefit the current family and new cousins that have yet to find us? I hope this finds you all having a restful Wednesday evening. :) Colleen
This was sent from another list.... I checked it out......this guy is doing a fantastic job! He purchases old photos and tries to re-unite them with their families. I didn't find any in my lines so far, but I'll keep checking............... Perhaps one of you can locate a belated Christmas gift or New Year "find" for your personal genealogy quests. Good luck and Happy New Year! http://fourkings.freeyellow.com/Page3.html

My version was a dusty old cowboy town with rows of buildings and hotels and houses, all with different Bower spellings on each - should include all of us, the Bauer Jail, the Bower Saloon, the Baur Ranch, the house with the 'red light (perhaps unnamed??),' the Bowerman Bank, the Boor Grocery, etc to include dry goods, blacksmith, stagecoach, farmer, teepee (if we have NA cousins??), your little running dog, graveyard, etc. The Bower Community with all the little Bowers . . . My first vision was of a wheel with B as the hub and different spellings of Bower "splaying" out from it maybe starting with the most common and "fading" to the lesser unless you'd think someone would feel slighted. I am not a "graphics" person and wouldn't have a clue where to start but just wanted to throw that out. Lita > Also, the > logo should (if it's possible) depict in some way, the fact that we are > Bower[s]/Bau[e]r, etc. cousins ... not just Bower.
These all are good basic ideas, to be sure. But I think, if actually done, a logo/crest would take on a different element, more in line with old crests of arms, old photos and old european maps blended graphically into the background -- some way, some how . . . Good morning Lynne and cousins, Lynne, you bring up some interesting questions. I'll answer them inside your message. Please scroll down ... Lynne K Ranieri wrote: > > Hello Colleen, > Since you requested it...a couple of quick thoughts about your "Plans and > Proposals" e-mail. > The first thing that came to mind was that I was not clear about several > items. For instance: > > -I have visited sites that are part of a Web ring, so I have a vague idea what > they are, but perhaps an explanation of exactly what it entails would help > everyone. Webrings are groups of sites that all have a common interest. In our case, a Bower[s]/Bau[e]r webring would be all those sites that have Bower[s]/Bau[e]r, etc. data on them. However, belonging to a webring is a voluntary thing. The Webmaster must JOIN the webring, as opposed to our linking to his/her site. People surfing the webring can then hit a link inside the ring and move from one Bower[s]/Bau[e]r, etc. site to the next simply by clicking our webring's link. > -Re the awards program, for whom did you intend the awards? For only those > members of the Bower Web ring? No, the awards would be for any person having a Web site that visits us and applies for one of our awards. Many people use awards as a way of publicizing their sites. However, my idea would not involve giving an award to just any site as a way of promoting us; our awards would have to be earned ~ meaning that a sloppy site (including sites obviously still under construction, those with broken graphics, etc.) will not be showing our award. If an award comes from us, it should mean something. > -I am sorry for not remembering the meaning of what is obviously a familiar > term to everyone but me, but what is "the Continuum?" The Continuum is the formal name for our State/Country Project. This activity is designed to help all our Bower[s]/ Bau[e]r, etc. cousins find sources and resouces on the Web under one common roof. Are you familiar with the US GENWEB project? The Continuum parallels it by using our surname spellings and their variants. We currently have one country and eight states represented ~~ Australia, California, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. We'd like you to join us, build an online Continuum site, and aid in our efforts to get all those Bower[s]/Bau[e]r sites that are already online linked from one centralized site rather than having to use a generalized search engine like HotBot or InfoSeek to search them out. If you'd be interested in hosting a Continuum site, please contact me at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. > -What kind of "help with those special requirements" for the Native American > project is required? Upwards of 15% of genealogists say that Native American research is the most diffult ~ harder than slave research. Though the material is available through Federal and State Archives, most researchers don't know about it or don't know how to use it. Native Americans have research sources available to them that those of us who descend from European ancestors don't use. Two examples are the Henderson Rolls ~ a census of 1,959 persons of the Cherokee Nation in North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia in 1835; the Mullay roll of 1848 was the first census of the Eastern Band of Cherokee after their removal west. With this message came one from Shirley who asked: > Native American??? > Do we have any American Indian Bowers subscribers? To your question Shirley, I have to honestly say, "I don't know if any of the cousins in the family are N.A." I DO know we have N.A. cousins though because in the last three years I've received about 14 messages from people telling me about their N.A. connections and asking me if we had material to help them. We don't have that material, and we should. > -A logo is a wonderful idea. Perhaps there could be some sort of contest > among our artistically-inclined cousins? We could do a contest and that would be fine; what do we offer as a prize? :) The logo should be for <http://bowercommunity.com> as opposed to the Homestead or Cottage, since both sites are inside our domain. Also, the logo should (if it's possible) depict in some way, the fact that we are Bower[s]/Bau[e]r, etc. cousins ... not just Bower. What say you artists to Lynne's suggestion? ..... > What is a "compass page"? The first page that you land on in a site (that tells you where to go, I presume)? You're absolutely right. Our compass page is at <http://bowercommunity.com> and will be redesigned sometime this year. > -Re our own store...a cute idea. Remind me, please, of what the annual domain > fees are. Membership is obtained by sending an email to Vicky Bowers-Gielau <vichary@home.com>, our Retreat Coordinator. The Retreat isn't just for chatting, though a private chat amongst ourselves was one reason for starting our "hideaway." The Retreat is also the place where we can put current-day pictures of ourselves and our families online without having the entire Web seeing them. However, due to a breech in sites' security, the Retreat was moved from myfamily.com to intranets. If you have futher questions, please address them to Vicky as she is more informed than I on all this. > -Is there some way to actually vote on these issues? Yes. We can do this through the chat forum or you can send your votes directly to me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are some well-thought questions ... obviously ones I had neglected to address. If anyone has questions, issues or ideas, please don't hesitate to bring them before the family. After all, we're all in this together. What benefits me most certainly benefits you, which in turn benefits our newest cousins, which ... I hope you're all having a WONDERFUL Wednesday! :) Colleen
Hello Colleen, Since you requested it...a couple of quick thoughts about your "Plans and Proposals" e-mail. The first thing that came to mind was that I was not clear about several items. Perhaps a little clarification of terms will make a decision easier for "the family". For instance: -I have visited sites that are part of a Web ring, so I have a vague idea what they are, but perhaps an explanation of exactly what it entails would help everyone. -Re the awards program, for whom did you intend the awards? Perhaps there could be some sort of contest among our artistically-inclined cousins? What is a "compass page"? The first page that you land on in a site (that tells you where to go, I presume)? -Re our own store...a cute idea. Remind me, please, of what the annual domain fees are. -Re the chat room, as you know, I don't chat -- and am not particularly interested in chat. It seems that your low numbers may indicate that it may be tough for others to get to the chat room, too, with any regularity. It might be worth one more effort to see if numbers can be increased, then evaluated. -Is there some way to actually vote on these issues? Lynne

Hi family, On December 2nd last year, I sent out my first Plans and Proposals ~ plans that I had for the family to help us prosper and grow. I had hoped that we would be able to complete all 20; though some of you said all these goals were rather "lofty." We did accomplished 9-1/2 of those goals ~ quite a feat considering that what none of us realized was that our two site moves and three rounds of site fights would play into those plans. However ... We now have our own domain (yeaayyy!) and we won the entire site fight (yeaayyy!), so we already know we won't face either of those this year. Once again then, I return to the Plans and Proposals from 2000 to lay 2001's out in front of you for discussion. As before, if there's anything in here we do NOT want, it gets scrubbed ... but the particular idea erased by a majority of the family as a whole. The ideas may be mine, but always ... the family must approve, since these are group efforts. We're still getting a lot of hits at our old GeoCities site. This isn't good; it means the search engines and those sites we have links at, still haven't been notified of our move[s] or, have been notified and still haven't changed their records. Publicity is paramount for us this year. Several of the proposals will hinge on this need for correct publicity. Those ideas are designated with a ** at the end. 1. Start a Bower Community webring for all our surnames plus those 80 variant spellings. It will help us get around to all those sites where information is kept locally that we still don't know about.** 2. Create an awards program. I don't mean the kind whereby just anyone can win our awards. I mean a program of stair-stepped awards so that even the newest Web owners can earn one. However, also have the kind that have to be earned ~ that will mean something after someone has worked hard to earn one. For example, a nice one for the inexperienced HTML builders, but something like a platinum one for those who do those super sites exceeding highest standards for presentation, documentation, etc.** 3. Get our Continuum up to 50% strength, at least. This project has been in operation over a year now and we still have just 9 sites. With four family teams working together, we shouldn't be having this problem getting the states and countries represented, but for some reason we are. Ideas? 4. Set up our Native American project. Our NA cousins still need help with those special requirement they face in their research. We can do a shelf, a room, a corner .... something strictly for them, much like the children's room for members of the TRIAD. 5. Our own Bower Community logo ~ something that will immediately identify us to the rest of the Web. Not only will the compass page display it, but so will the Homestead, Cottage and all Continuum sites display it. In addition, the Continuum sites will display their own logo, keeping the entire project tied together with the Cottage and the domain.** 6. Find new ways to advertise our community and each of its sites. The more known we are, the more chances we have of our material being found hence, the better chance we have of making connections with inline cousins.** 7. Open our own store? Revenues would pay for the annual domain fees. 8. Generally spread the word about our family to other Bower[s]/Bau[e]r, etc. researchers. The larger our ranks become, the better our chances of making those sought-after connections. 9. Get more people involved with the Retreat, our family's "get-away" where we have our own private chat room. Right now, only an average of 5-6 people visit there. If we don't want the project any more, then let's vote on it and scrub it; otherwise, let's figure out a way to get more of us utilitizing this source of bringing us closer together. 10. One project ~ meant to be a surprise to the family at the Reunion last year, then again at Christmas ... is still sitting on the back burner, like the GEDCOM project did. I can't say anything now since it is still to be a surprise, but this project WILL come out sometime this year with a full explanation to everyone. And there you have it. Not 20 proposals like last year because of all we did accomplish. However, that doesn't mean YOU can't come up with ideas yourselves. We can add your idea[s] to this page and present it to the family as I've done here. This page will be posted on the bulletin board at the Homestead. Discussion? Feedback? Colleen
I saw a few Bowers in here. Gloria http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rampage/indextwo.txt
