    3. Don't give up on finding your ancestors! You just never know when one will fall out of the tree! Just post... post... and post everything you know. Eventually, someone will contact you with more information. I've been looking for over 2 years for my Bauers, and just now have begun to shake them out of the tree! I have found them listed as anything, looking or sounding, like Bauer! In the 1850 Stephenson County, Illinois Census, under the indexed name of "Baner" is my John Bauer. They were living in the town of Freeport in Illinois next to the brother of Margaret Eber-Bauer. A cousin found them, I don't know how but she did! Who would have thought of looking under "Baner" for "Bauer"? By the way, this cousin contacted me through a posting I made on the "Genforum", and we have made great progress on tracing this line! This Bauer family came from Darmstadt Germany, and first settled in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. So, based on the 1850 census, I'm guessing they lived there for at least 13 years. Their migration path appears to be: Before 1830 - Darmstadt, Germany possibly near the community of Eberstadt Bet 1830-1847 - Stark County Ohio By 1850 - Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois By 1858 - Caseyville, St. Clair County, Illinois By 1863 - Nauvoo County, Illinois. By 1870 - Pike County, Missouri between 1870 and 1888 they migrated through St. Louis and Kansas City Missouri. I'm not sure yet if they lived there or just travelled through there. By 1889 - Emporia Kansas By 1900's - Topeka Kansas. ************************* 1850 Stephenson County, State of Illinois, Census: John Bauer, 45, M, Boot and Shoe Dealer, born in Germany Margaret, 39, F, born in Germany John, 16, M, Clerk, born in Ohio Helena (?), F, 14, born in Ohio Caroline, 13, F, born in Ohio Florindina,7, F, born in Ohio Augustus,6, M, born in Ohio Philip, 3, M, born in Ohio Next door is Margaret's brother: Jacob Eber, 36, M, Farmer, born in Germany Frederica, 24, F, born in Germany Amelia (?), 5, F, born in Ohio Ferdinand (?), 3, M, born in Ohio Please feel free to contact me if any of this sounds familiar! 3. Just a follow-up on the subject of hanging in there. I had been searching for Bower in Ontario for about 2 years -- and was sure I was the only living branch on my family tree. Then I dug (as an aside, really) into American Military records for my great-uncle, Frank Bower. It was an aside because the rest of the family was definitely NORTH of the 49th but he went to Alaska back in the early 1900s. I found him... dug up quite a bit of information. So, when (just a couple of months later) my uncle -- also Frank Bower, got a letter from the grandson none of us knew Frank had... I was able to say, "yes, answer the letter, he really is Frank's grandson." A week or so later, I got a phone call from my cousin. We talked for ages. We now keep in touch, managed to meet for lunch once (we do not live all that far apart). Had I given up the search (or not ventured down side branches) I might have missed the clues and assumed my cousin was just some crank! It is not dead easy, but it is not brain surgery, either. Stick with it. Someone out there is related to you! Best Dixie Cutler Vancouver, BC

    3. Hello family, Colleen asked me to write a note if I had found some cousins after my posting on James J. Bowers of KY and IL in hopes that it would encourage some of you on the list, especially newbies. After being on the Bower list for about 2 years, my message on James J. Bowers got a response from a cross-posting on the Bowers list. You never know when you are going to find something. More and more people are doing genealogy every day and someone is bound to appear sooner or later and you both will be able to fill in some missing pieces of the puzzle and help each other research further. While I was not able to go any further back than the oldest ancestor I presently have, I was able to fill in another child of that ancestor. I might add that Colleen is right in her Sunday Coffee section to newbies on posting queries...you definitely need to give details in queries. Giving one name with a birthdate and deathdate is not enough for someone to recognize that they may be a cousin. Locations are important. Sometimes where they lived for a time, if different from the birthplace or deathplace, can even be of help. Listing known children is definitely a help. I was sent a group sheet in response to a letter I had written which was what I posted. If the person who sent that sheet to me had only sent one name, then I could have easily discounted the information as probably not mine and we would've never connected. But he gave me lots of details. With that, I was able to recognize several children's names as family names as well as the KY counties and know immediately that James Bowers of IL was one of the unknown siblings of my ggg-grandfather who had gone south to MS. Where most of my ancestors had typically migrated in the southern states, James went north. Remember that descendants have gone everywhere in the U.S., so you never know where you will find a connection. In summary, don't give up. Look everywhere for your ancestors. Don't discount e-mails of Bower/s in areas you think couldn't possibly be where your relatives might have lived. It's helpful to scan all the Bower/s e-mails even if the subject line lists Bowers of NY and your group is OH. You never know. And newbies, while you're waiting to connect with someone on the list, there's plenty of other places to do research. You can visit the Mormon family history center nearest you and your local library may even have begun a genealogy corner that could help. Don't forget to call those aunts, uncles and cousins you already talked to once before...they just might have one more tidbit to add since your last conversation. Happy Hunting!

( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Newbie Nuggets a. on writing a query b. cite your source 3. Presidential quiz 4. Did you know...? If you've been with the family for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraph… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur ancestors or any of the 81+ variant spellings we research that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. Our home is Bower Community, located at <http://bowercommunity.com>. There, we currently have two sites: The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our primary homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://bowercommunity.com/homestead>. Smaller and just opened this year, our sister site, the Bower Cottage, houses most of our projects including an online GEDCOM fed by quite a few cousins from our lists. The Cottage is still small as far as material goes, however give us time and we'll have it filled really soon. The Cottage is at <http://bowercommunity.com/cottage>. NEWBIE NUGGETS ON WRITING A QUERY "I'm researching John Doe who came from Suffolk to Texas. If you have any information, please contact me. Thank you." Dear cousin Newbie or Uninformed Novice, while the above query is polite, please _DO NOT_ write one like it! I'm sorry to tell you, but the chances of your "John Doe" being _the only_ one in Texas, Suffolk or the world are just not all that great. While being a great writer isn't a requirement to place a good query, if you want help from anyone, you'll need to be specific ~ giving names, dates, places and if necessary, the person's spouse and children. I may not know your John Doe because I haven't gotten as far as you, but I may extend from one of his children. Your John Doe just might be a great uncle (rather than a grandfather) whom I'll recognize because you've named his wife. As the cliché' goes, "The more, the better." CITE YOUR SOURCE, PLEASE As a newbie to genealogical research, this is another very important guideline that I can pass along to you. Remember when you had to do that term paper in high school or college? You were required to do a bibliography, or cite your sources of information. Naming the source(s) of your information gives credence to your work and credit to those on whose works you relied. Do you know of the book "Roots," by Alex Haley? It was heralded as one of the finest works of family history... even a movie was made on it. However, I'm afraid the glory didn't last long for Alex Haley. That very well written story of his ancestors was discredited by the genealogical community because Alex failed to document his sources of information. Its reliability was reduced to family fiction. You don't want that to happen to your works. Be sure to document ALL PIECES of your data NOW... while you're still in the research phase. PRESIDENTIAL QUIZ Yesterday the United States watched the inauguration of President George Walker Bush. I watched everything! (No, it doesn't make me a Republican; it makes me nosy!) <g> During the commercials, the network asked what years certain presidents made certain statements. It occurred to me that our ancestors may have been as interested in the presidents of their day, as I was about the events of yesterday. So, today I offer you the following quiz. You'll find the answers at the end of the Coffee. 1. Who was the first president born a citizen of the United States? a. John Quincy Adams c. Martin Van Buren b. Andrew Jackson d. William Henry Harrison 2. George W. Bush is the son of former president, George H. Bush. Only one other president holds the distinction of being a president and the son of a president. Who is he? a. John Quincy Adams c. Andrew Johnson b. James Monroe d. Franklin Delano Roosevelt 3. Who was the youngest man to serve as president? a. Theodore Roosevelt c. Grover Cleveland b. Ulysses S. Grant d. Harrison. ** Ten presidents were generals: Washington, Jackson, W. Harrison, Taylor, Pierce, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, B. Harrison, and Eisenhower. ** Nine years after leaving the presidency, Taft was appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court. Family ... it's what we're all about. Knowing events in the lives of our ancestors gives us an even greater appreciation for them. Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.' Quiz answers: 1. c. 1. [BOWER] CHAT: Family Discovery is still in business
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Cousins, Once again, this is a mass mailing to all 21 of my lists. I apologize for this, but I need to reach everyone as quickly as possible. The subject of Family Discovery is getting rather old, I know. However, there are a lot of newbies among us now who won't realize that if they receive a message from Family Discovery that they'll be dealing with people who will rip them off. To our newbies ~ Family Discovery is just what I said in the last sentence... rip-offs. This is becoming an old subject among those of us who have been doing online genealogy for a while, but you need to be made aware... Family Discovery links their pages to Rootsweb sites and archive pages, GenWeb sites, and privately owned sites ... sites on which all the information is already FREE! They are doing this without permission and are currently under investigation. Please, heed the warning. A new ad from them is going around telling you that if you'll join by Friday, 2 Feb, you'll pay "a one time access fee of ONLY $49.00 with absolutely nothing to pay EVER again..." While I'm at it, I'd better warn you of their newest, sister site... GenSeeker, in case another message is floating around that I'm not aware of yet. Though I haven't heard any more about it from anyone (yet), it's still a site owned by the same person(s) and building itself under the same premise as Family Discovery. I've been to their newest site and seen what they're up to. Instead of the "special rate" you're charged $20 more. However, when clicking on their "freesearch link," the unwary customer is taken to the familydiscovery.com site. GenSeeker describes itself as "the most comprehensive easy to use collection of online records ever compiled." Of course it is, if they link to every free website they can find! Save your money and do the search yourself! You DO NOT need to pay for a service that is already free if you know where to look. If you need assistance, send a message to the list and state in the top line of your message that you're a newbie needing help; you'll probably get more than you can handle! :) Gene Olson has an Anti-FamilyDiscovery.com update list from his website. He has been working to close down both sites and is still on their trail. You newbies to online genealogy would be wise to go to his site and read up on this company so you won't be ripped off. Click on the following link and you'll be taken directly to his site: <http://www.compuright.net/familydiscovery>. Gene's new email address is <gene_olson@bigfoot.com>. His toll-free number is 1-877-319-9699. I tried to access familydiscovery.com just a moment ago. It seems the entire site is now password protected. Hmmm... I wonder why... I hope this finds you all having a FANTASTIC Friday! :) Colleen

    3. Hi Robert, I read your message here about James E bowers. Not sure if it was you asking about James E. but I too am looking for a James that may have been from Ohio or PA. All I know is that my James was living around 1935-37 and went to a Bowers reunion in Fayette county, PA. At that time James was "Uncle James" to my Mother, which she said he was a very elderly man at that time. Do you have a Bowers that married a Meinheart, or Minehart ? (first name Fredrich Minhart) Do not know female Bowers first name. in the Fayette county area, but we have a Bowers that married a male Barber . (last name) in the same area of Brownsville, Brier Hill, New Salem, East Millsboro, or Ada, (do not believe Ada still exists, but that is where I was born. These were all towns in Fayette county, PA. There are Bowers in cemeteries on the rootsweb. I have Bowers on both sides of my parents, also in Ohio. and my husband has the S.C. Bowers on his side of family. 3. Hi Colleen, Thanks for responding. I went through the genealogy you sent me but, nothing looks familiar. My research to date shows that my Bowers were born, and lived, in Berks Co. all of their lives. If anything changes during my research, and any of your people come up, I'll let you know. Thanks again! Taylor >

Thank goodness we have had lousy weather the past few weeks and I have been forced to stay inside the house. If there are any connections I would very much like to exchange information with you. Beside him is his wife, NANCY, who died in 1832 at the age of 88. This means they were both born about 1744-5. There are also 3 children who died in 1829 burried with them - grandchildren??? I believe these were the grandparents of my ancestor, MICHAEL BOWERS, born shortly after 1800 , He died about 1847, leaving a wife, MARGARET MULHOLEN, and 4 children, James Weston Bowers, B 1829, Jesse J. B 1837, Amm Eliza B 1832, and Mary Jane B 1841. There was probably another son born about 1830. Believe Michael's father was also a Conrad and he is the Conrad who moved to Bullskin Twsp., Fayette Co. Does anyone know anything about these people. 1. [BOWER] JOHN BOWER/S SIGHTINGS in Craik's History of the Brethren in Kansas
    2. I've had a copy of Craik's 1922 History of the Church of the Brethren in Kansas (aka the Dunkards) for quite a while, but it didn't have an index. Now I have an index and have found a bunch of Bower and Bowers listings, some of which don't belong to my Bower line. For instance, page 29 has a JOHN BOWER who was minister of the Washington Creek congregation during the grasshopper plague of 1874. This is near Lawrence KS in Douglas County. His name appears on page 389 as one of the Representatives on the Standing Committee of Annual Conference for the church in 1862 and 1864. I think I've seen information elsewhere that ties him to the Shively and Ulrich families. (Since my Bower line also ties to Shively, I thought surely he belonged to us, but he doesn't.) He may be the same person as JOHN BOWERS mentioned on page 215 as one of a group of Elders called in by the Pleasant Grove congregation during the "Hoppingite schism," which apparently centered on the mode of foot washing used during Love Feast (communion). Elder JOHN BOWERS appears again on p 252 in connection with the organization in 1877 of the Wade Branch congregation. "Elder John Bowers had charge of the services, which took place in the born of John H. Ayres..." And on page 259 his name crops up in connection with the Washington Creek congregation and a new minister named James E Hilkey: "In 1868, he was ordained by Elder John Bowers." On page 260, he crops up again in the narrative concerning the same Washington Creek congregation: "Elders in charge have been...John Bowers, ...[and others]" More information about this John Bowers appears on page 265, in the narrative about the Wolf River congregation in Doniphan County, second congregation of the Brethren in Kansas. "It was at a Love Feast held at the home of Jacob H. Root in September 1859 that the Wolf River church was organized. Elders Abraham Rothrock, of Lawrence, and JOHN BOWERS, late of Montgomery county, Ohio, having the work of organization in charge..." (Abraham Rothrock was one of the preachers later shot by Quantrill's raiders during their infamous raid on the Lawrence community.) Elder John Bowers' name crops up again on page 314 in a biography of James Edward Hilkey, noting that Hilkey was ordained to the eldership by Elder John Bowers in 1868. (I suppose that being an elder is similar to being a bishop in other churches, except that the Brethren have more of a grassroots kind of heirarchy instead of authority coming from the top down.) I hope he belongs to somebody out there. Jan T

    3. Actually, I have seen that a lot online. I'm just using it as a starting point. Some of the names are in Daniel B. Bower's Last Will & Testament and they match up with what's in the book. I have ordered a few death certificates and Estate records today. Hopefully they will match up with the dates. Thanks! Taylor -----Original Message----- From: Jean R. 3. Hi Everyone, My name is Taylor Addams. I am a Researcher with a company called "International Genealogical Search," in British Columbia, Canada. We have been retained to locate heirs for the Daniel B. Bower Trust; to identify & locate his siblings and their descendents. I am hoping that someone on this list will be familiar with this family or can give me some advice regarding searching for this family in Berks County, PA. The information I have to date is as follows: Siblings to Daniel B Bower Joel B Bower b: 1840 d: 1933 Boyertown, PA John B Bower b: 1842 d: 1878 Boyertown, PA Priscilla B Bower b: 1846 d: 1907 New Berlinville, PA +Levi Ehst Joanna Bower b: 1849 d: 1884 Franconia Twp., PA +Daniel Rittenhouse Elizabeth B Bower b: 1854 d: 1927 Boyertown, PA +John B Bechtel Daniel B Bower with his children Daniel B Bower b: 1851 d: 1913 Boyertown, PA Thomas Bower b: 1878 d: 1897 Boyertown, PA Howard Bower b: 1885 possibly Boyertown, PA Father Henry O Bauer b.1807 d.1867 Douglass Twp, PA The above information was taken from the book, "Trail of the Pioneers" A History and Genealogy of Hans Bauer and His Descendents. Daniel B. Bowers was married to Amanda Riegner. If anyone is researching this family, I would appreciate any information that you can share that may possibly lead me to living heirs. In return, I would be more than happy to share any information that I receive during my research. (obits, vital records, probate, etc...) Thank you! Taylor Addams
