    3. Ok first of all I ask my German Parents-in-law and they say that what was written is abbreviations not complete words. Second of they went to their maps to see if we could decipher the name in completion. Now you realize the Baden is a city and district? Oberschefflenz; is probably your OBERSC Mosbach; is probably your MOSB Baden; is right but not the city district of BADE and that the district of Baden as a complete name is Baden-Wurttemberg district. Does that help? Vicky "Billie J. That's easy to see by the number of websites featuring GEDCOM files of genealogical information offered to relatives and potential relatives. There are also several websites that offer to host GEDCOM files for other genealogists, with the promise of an even greater audience for your family data. One of those aggregation websites is named GenCircles. As with similar GEDCOM websites, GenCircles offers an extensive array of GEDCOM files featuring data on thousands of individuals. Each of these can be searched separately, or all of them can be investigated at once using the site's search engine. Beyond GEDCOM files, GenCircles hosts geographic surname clubs, and a special service known as smart matching -- software that will match names found in your GEDCOM file with other names in the GEDCOM files already registered with GenCircles. 3. Just an added note to this. I just lost my father last month. One of the things I am so happy I did, was tape record a couple of our conversations. Not only do I have the facts of the conversation on tape... but just hearing his voice brings tears to my eyes. I know that eventually, with time, his voice will bring a smile to my face... Tape record those conversations. You won't regret it! Sharon Yuba City, CA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Are your grandparents still alive? What about your great aunts and uncles? 3. Dear Colleen - All, Thanks to you and everyone involved for all your/their hard work on my/our behalf in posting the records submitted by Mr. Glenn Geisheimer and others. That being said, I looked under the following two lists but was not able to find any of my (known) Dielman BAUER records: born circa 1718 in or near Hesse, Dormstadt or Cassell, Germany, and married Elizabeth SCHMIDT . . . or their son, Dielman BAUER, born circa 1744 in or near Crumbach, Hesse, Dormstadt or Cassell, Germany. I do not know their uplines, other than Elizabeth SCHMIDT's father was said to be a Nicholas SCHMIDT. Anyone got any suggestions/answers? German Birth Records: 1651-1905 http://bowercommunity.com/homestead/gerbirthsNDX.htm German Marriage Records Index: 1651-1901 http://bowercommunity.com/homestead/germarrNDX.htm Thanks, Ron Myers (San Diego) Colleen Pustola wrote: > Hi family, > > I have TWO ANNOUNCEMENTS in this message. 1. [BOWER] TWO NOW ONLINE AT THE HOMESTEAD...
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi family, I have TWO ANNOUNCEMENTS in this message. We have TWO cousins to thank tonight and Canadian and German researchers are having their day in the sun. :) First, an addition to the vital records section that I failed to point out to all of you last night in my first message... Bruce Bowers (bowers6254@telocity.com) extracted 401 Bauer, Baur, Bower and Bowers death records from the Ontario, Canada index for the years 1869 to 1919. These records are the first international death records at the site and we are indeed privileged to house them at the Homestead. It isn't always a small feat to read a microfilm and pull each record out, but Bruce did that for us. Bruce, we thank you so much for giving us your time and sharing the data with us. YOU ARE VERY APPRECIATED!! You'll find the index in the vital records section (in the main hallway) at Bower Family Homestead <http://bowercommunity.com/homestead>. Second, the German marriage database I told you about last night is now online. Once again, we owe our thanks to cousin Glenn Geisheimer <germanic42@home.com>. This second database has records dating from 1651-1901 with thousands of Bauer, Baur, etc. names. The marriage records online tonight total 9,452 for a total of nearly 20,000 individuals. There are NO Bower or Bowers spellings. I should also mention here that those of you with the BOWERS spelling, and of German extraction, should check BOTH databases for BAUEREN and BAUREN. I have broken the marriage database down into 22 files to keep the size down but they are still rather large. Please expect a wait for each selected file to load, depending on your modem. As with the Ontario death records, you'll find the data base in the vital records section (in the main hallway). Click on the Marriage Records link there. This time I'm thinking ahead... :) ...I have the column definitions on the marriage records index page already. I still have two more databases for Germany to complete - * medieval births (1535-1650) * medieval marriages (1651-1901) I will _try_ to get them online tonight. If I can't, please don't look for them until possibly Wednesday. Tomorrow morning I begin the GEDCOM update. If you haven't submitted your GEDCOM and wanted to, you still have until about 9 a.m. U.S. MST to get it in. Lots of us should be really happy tonight after making a load of finds in the German birth records. How many more will be happy after the Ontario deaths and German marriages, hmmmm....? :) Bruce, Glenn... thank you so much. A lot of cousins are going to break through their lines because of the time you both took to extract records for us. Our appreciation to both of you is indeed heartfelt. I wish you all sweet dreams! Good night! :) Colleen

    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi family, I got so into explaining the setup of the German birth records database last night that I neglected to give an explaination of what you'd be looking at! I also see today that I neglected to give the same on the index page; I'll have that corrected shortly after this message. If you haven't been to the database yet, once there you'll see eight columns. I suspect columns 4-6 will give you the biggest headaches, but I'll go ahead and enumerate them all... 1 - Child's name 2 - Event type. There are two types of records in the database ~ birth and christening. 3 - Year of event. 4 - State 5 - District; county 6 - City, town, village 7 - Father 8 - Mother I should also add here that even though there are no Bower or Bowers spellings per se in the database, it doesn't mean your ancestors won't be in it. If you know (or even suspect) your lines came from Germany, definitely check all the spellings. If anyone should have success, won't you please share it with the rest of us? We'd love to share your excitement. Wishing you all a SUPER, SUNNY Sunday! :) Colleen

( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. The picture If you've been with the family for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraphÂ… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur ancestors or any of the 81+ variant spellings we research that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. Our home is Bower Community, located at <http://bowercommunity.com>. There, we currently have two sites: The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our primary homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://bowercommunity.com/homestead>. Smaller and just opened this year, our sister site, the Bower Cottage, houses most of our projects including an online GEDCOM fed by quite a few cousins from our lists. The Cottage is still small as far as material goes, however give us time and we'll have it filled really soon. The Cottage is at <http://bowercommunity.com/cottage>. THE PICTURE I've been working on my second book behind the scenes here... the one for my mother's side. Momma gave me an old, old photo album last July that she had tucked away in a box in the top of her closet. She pointed out the picture of a young woman to me... one wearing a long dress, her hair in a pouf-bun high on her head. It was my grandmother in her twenties and it was her engagement picture. She looked so young and pretty... not at all the way I recalled her aged appearance as a child. I didn't think about Grandma (born in 1890) ever being young then, and never did... not until Momma pointed out that picture to me. I thought, "She's beautiful! No wonder Grandpa married her!" She wasn't smiling, and I wondered about that, too. Looking at Grandma's picture makes me wonder more about what she was like. Oh, I have all her vitals... her birth and death dates, her marriage date... all the places. I have a copy of her will and I know many of the organizations she belonged to. But what was she _really_ like? Did she march through Detroit for women's right to vote? Did she know how to do the popular dances of the 1920's. Was she always as "starchy" as I felt she was when I was a child? I remember Grandma's laughter... I also remember her as being strict ~ and a fabulous cook! But what were her beliefs? Getting past the superficial layers, what was she like as a person?... a vibrant young woman? As a military brat, I didn't have benefit of knowing Grandma as well as I might have if my dad had chosen a civilian career. My memories and limited knowledge of Grandma will hardly do justice to the "real" her. I think about things like that as I work on the narratives for the people in my heritage. This one side is full German... the very country I've come to love after living there so many times. Why didn't I take the time to appreciate everything more about Germany and Momma's side of the family when I was there? It's too late now. However, it may not be for you. Are your grandparents still alive? What about your great aunts and uncles? Do you take the time to really "hear" their stories of their youth, or will you one day look at the pictures and think to yourself, "If only I had given him/her/them my time, and listened." Next time, listen. Listen with your eyes, feel and sense them with your ears... and let them touch your soul. Give them the gift of your time so they can give you the gift of themselves. Once they're gone, you'll have not only your documents but a wealth beyond price... the enrichment of memories from them and of them. They are what made us. They are we and we are them. After all, it's family... caring for and sharing with one another... and, it's what we're all about. To those of you with February birthdays, the family and I all wish you very happy and special day. You are loved!! I really enjoyed this time with you. It was so nice. I hope you all have a fantastic upcoming week. I wish you all a week filled with health, fun, productivity, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi family, Thanks to cousin Glenn Geisheimer <germanic42@home.com>, the Homestead is proud to present a German birth records database dating from 1651-1905 with thousands of Bauer, Baur, etc. names. Parents are included in the records. The birth records online tonight total 17,726 for a total of nearly 40,000 individuals. There are NO Bower or Bowers spellings. I have broken the database down into 26 files to keep the size down but they are still HUGE! Please expect to wait for each selected file to load. You'll find the data base in the vital records section (in the main hallway) at Bower Family Homestead <http://bowercommunity.com/homestead>. I'm also working on three more databases for Germany - * marriages 1651-1901 (another large one, with 9,452 marriages naming nearly 19,000 individuals) * medieval births (1535-1650) * medieval marriages (1651-1901) We can all thank Glenn for these works. He's added a great, great deal of data to our home and I know many of us are going to benefit from it. Thank you so much Glenn, for your generosity toward all of us. You are VERY appreciated! :) With the GEDCOM update starting on Monday, I'm trying to get these next three databases out tomorrow; no guarantees on it, though. See you all at tomorrow's Coffee! :) Colleen

    1. [BOWER] GEDCOM PROJECT REMINDER
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi cousins, ....late at night... still pounding the keyboard... :) This is just a reminder that the deadline for submitting your data to me for the family's GEDCOM project is Sunday, February 4th. If you've sent a GEDCOM in already and would like me to use the same one again, please let me know at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. If you're submitting an update, please let me know that so I can remove your last one. If you're new to the family and would like to submit a GEDCOM, you should know there are two requirements: 1. Your GEDCOM can be as long or short as you wish, but it must be primarily about Bower[s], Bau[e], Bro[u]wer, or any of our researched variant spellings. (Spouse's lines - include only them and their parents). 2. Absolutely NO living people. You'll find the current GEDCOM at Bower Cottage <http://bowercommunity.com/cottage>. The next scheduled update won't be until June. I hope you all have a SUPER Saturday! :) Colleen

    1. [BOWER] chat: gencircles

    3. Not that I know anything about GenCircles, but their finances are not necessarily a reason for panic. Rootsweb has always been free, they've found other ways to make it work. Also, GenCircles makes a big point of their privacy policy to address the very concerns brought up here. Not that they can't change their mind willy nilly, but there's really nothing in the virtual world they can do besides post such a policy and earn trust by not violating it. From their site: What about the protection of my data and privacy? We know that the future of our project rests on respecting your hard work. With this in mind, we created the GenCircles Promise. Our promise states that we will never claim to own your genealogy or burn it onto CD to sell. In addition to this, we have a clearly stated Privacy Policy that keeps your personal information secure. If at any time, you'd like to remove your file from our servers, it is a simple "no questions asked" click of the mouse. http://www.gencircles.com/globaltree/ Amelia __________________________________________________ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! 3. Bruce, I rec'd a solicitation from Gencircles too and was concerned. I remember Family Treemaker soliciting me several years back and now they sell everyone's GEDCOM, which of course we knew they planned to do anyway. I can't imagine Gencircles staying free unless they plan to have advertising on their webpages. bbowers wrote: > I have recently been solicited by "Gencircles" to submit my GEDCOM. 3. I have recently been solicited by "Gencircles" to submit my GEDCOM. Don't know if they are legit or not. They state they are free, but I see not signs that that they have a method of financial support.
