    1. [BOWER] Henry Bower, Jr. (info found in an old file at the library)
    2. Lisa K. Brown
    3. I am new to genealogy. I don't think this family ties into my line, but I found it, so I thought I would see if anyone else could use the information. This information was in a public file folder in my public library (Clark County, IN), so I cannot speak for how correct it is. The librarian said it was donated to the library by a family member of Henry Bower, Jr. I copied it as it reads, so the comments in the genealogy is from the original author, which was not listed. I don't know any more about the data or the people than what is included below. I hope it helps someone. (By the way, I am researching the line of Joel Bower (Sr and especially Jr.) from Ripley county, IN., so if someone can tie this person to Joel or has other information about Joel Bower, feel free to email me!) Lisa --- information starts here --- I. Henry Bower Jr. was born 1779 in the state of Pennsylvania and died in 1840 in Indiana. He married Margaret Thomas of Rowan County, NC. Relatives thinks that Henry Alex Bower family went to Johnson County, IN; and in 1849 they moved to Hamilton County, IN, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. In 1850 he built a water-powered sawmill in, or near, the creek near his home, south of Ekin, IN. A few years later he built a water-powered grist-mill. Both mills were the first of their kind in that part of Indiana. After Henry Alex Bower started sawing logs into lumber, the people from miles away brought their logs in to his mill on wagons to have them sawed into lumber from which they built their homes. That was the first lumber in the area. The farmers brought corn and wheat in on horseback from many miles away to have them ground into meal and flour for bread for their food. They were not growing wheat until after he built his mill, and then they started raising wheat; and Henry would grind it into flour for them. Henry Alex Bower was an important man in Indiana. He furnished the people with the first lumber of that area, which made it possible for them to live in a house made from lumber. 3. Diana, My Bowers have gone this migration route: VA>NC>TN>MS/KY>TX/IL Jeremiah Bowers was born in VA 1768, was possibly in NC during Revolution, definitely in 1800, in TN late 1800 to around 1837, then at least one son went to MS where several generations stayed till 1960's when most migrated to TX. Parent of that son and several other sons went to Todd Co., KY. One son from KY moved to IL around 1854. Pearlington, MS is down near the Gulf whereas my group were 100 miles north of Jackson in Carroll, Grenada and Montgomery Counties. Possibly Albin could be descended from the Illinois branch. James Bowers moved to Washington Co., IL from Logan Co., KY around 1854. Albin is not listed as one of James' sons on the list I have. Perhaps he could be a grandson. Post a tree of Albin starting with the furthest back you know with all vitals you know or send to me. I don't have anything that would help yet, but will put in my puzzle group. Something may turn up as I research. Donna GrmaGoose@aol.com wrote: > Don't know if there would be any connections here, but I also had Bowers > living in MS. 2. Don't know if there would be any connections here, but I also had Bowers living in MS. My great grandfather, Albin Bowers, his wife Mary (Glover) Bowers, daughter Nancy Barbara Bowers, & a son William Bowers. Don't know if there were other children. Believe Albin died in Pearlington MS when Nancy was about 6. Believe his death date to be Dec. 26, 1893. Not sure where he is buried. We never knew why the family ended up in MS. We believe his wife, Mary (Glover) Bowers was born somewhere in TN. We really know nothing else about Mary except that my grandmother, Nancy, always said her mother was quite religious and read her Bible everyday. We think Albin also lived in Ohio and Delaware when he was younger and possibly also Illinois where we believe his father died. There may be a Choctaw connection to either the Bowers or Glover line as my grandmother always said that one of her grandparents was Choctaw. Diana

    1. [BOWER] BOWER & Chillisquaque/Mooresburg Churches, Northumberland Co, PA
    2. Harold E. Bower, Jr.
    3. The History of the Chillisquaque Church Rev. William Gardner Finney, 1926 (The Mooresburg Church was founded by members of the Chillisquaque Church.) The father of Ephraim and Cyrus Bower was William Bower. Their mother was a Boyer. William Bower went from this section to Berks County. He was a blacksmith and farmer. He lived below Reading, on the Philadelphia Pike. The Rev. Samuel A. Bower, son of Ephraim and Mary (Taylor) Bower, is pastor of the Olivet Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg, PA. He graduated from Lafayette in 1896 and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1901. His pastorates are as follows: Montgomery, 1901-03; graduated from Princeton, after a post-graduate course, in 1904, with the degree of B.D., at the same time receiving M.A. from Lafayette; pastor at Monaca, 1904-9; Johnstown Second, 1909-11; Northminster, Washington, S.C., 1911-19; Harrisburg, since 1919. His wife was Minnie A. Menges of Montgomery. (NOTE: William Bower here mentioned is a son of Jacob Friederich Bower and Susanna Happell. Jacob was the eldest son of Moses Jr. and Barbara Friederich Bower of Amity Twp, Berks Co, PA, and later (with second wife, Barbara Kloss), of White Deer Twp, Northumberland Co, PA.) The Bower ancestor, Moses by name, came to Philadelphia in 1753, and in 1772 purchased a farm in Amity Township, Berks County (purchase date of farm may not be accurate). Most of this land is still in the Bower family, now owned by John Lincoln Bower, head doctor of the P.R.R. Mr. Ephraim Bower is the fifth generation. He was born in 1843. His wife was Mary A. Taylor. They had thirteen children, of whom ten lived to grow up and there are yet living, eight. One of the daughters is married to James Beech, M.D., of Mooresburg, who is located in Williamsport. Another daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Bower is Bessie, who is teaching Chemistry in college - nine years at Penn State, then at Lake Erie College, Painsville, Ohio, and now at Hood College, Frederick, MD. Mr. Ephraim Bower is one of our oldest citizens. He is the only surviving veteran of the Civil War in that neighborhood. He was in the army in the last year of the war, Company D, 58th Regiment, Pennsylvania. Was at Richmond and Petersburg. One of Mr. Bower's sons, Nathaniel E., was struck by lightening and died June 3, 1904; just promoted by President Roosevelt, First Lieutenant, First Battalion Engineers, at Fort Leavenworth, KS. Another son, Thomas Taylor Bower, was in World War service, in the Navy, engaged at the Proving Ground, near Washington, DC, being Lieutenant, and having taken the flu, developed pneumonia, and died in the hospital at Washington, in October, 1918. Ernest Bower, of the Trustees, is on the mother's side a representative of the Taylor family, of which family, two brothers of Mrs. Ephraim Bower, whose maiden name was Taylor, distinguished a generation ago by their perseverance, working their way through college, the one at Lafayette and the other at Columbia. The latter died only recently, a New York City attorney. The other, William, a graduate engineer, was scalded to death at some public works, many years ago. Mooresburg Church Roll 1927: Bower - Cyrus, Lydia, Ephraim, Mary, Ernest, Pearl, Hazel, Burgess. The Young Men's Bible Class at Mooresburg, Mrs. Stuart Curry, teacher, displayed an Honor Roll of ten names during the World War: Thomas Taylor Bower . . . . Bower won a Gold Star. Those entering the ministry from Chillisquaque - . . . Rev. Samuel A. Bower.

    1. [BOWER] CONRAD & SYBILLA BAUER, Brown County, Union Township, Ohio
    2. Hello List, While searching for ancestors in Ohio, William & Elenor Irwin Bowers (births circa 1800), I have been concentrating on Brown & Clermont Counties. I found a BAUER Cemetery in a list of cemeteries in Union Township, Brown County, Ohio. I posted an online query to Brown County and had this response: "Ohio Cemeteries" compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society 1998: Bauer Family Cemetery: Behind Bauer homestead west of Ripley on US 52. "Cemetery Inscriptions of Brown County, Ohio Book 1" Bauer Family Cemetery, Union Township "This small cemetery is located upon a hill, back of the old Bauer homestead, just off Rt 52, W. of Levanna. It is enclosed with an iron fence." In a private email, I received the following: "Cemetery Inscriptions of Brown County, Ohio, Volume 1" complied by Linda H. Wilson 1976-1977 Bauer Family Cemetery, Union Township copied July 1976 BAUER Conrad 10/1804-10/2/1858 Sybilla-und Kindern no dates (Gewidmet von der trauemden Gattin) Also mentioned was a tombstone that was found being used as a doorstep and was said to have been found just up the hill from the Bauer cemetery. SEYLER Mat 7/30/1858-8/18/1858 a.0-0-18 Since this is not the burial site of William & Elenor Bowers that I had hoped to find, I am posting to this list as someone may be searching for Conrad & Sybilla. I do not have Conrad in my line that I am aware of, but his birthdate is close to that of my William. Possibly brothers??? Does anyone know anything more about the reference to "old Bauer homestead" west of Levanna, Ohio? Can anyone translate the German on the tombstone? Fran akabana@cs.com
