    3. I rec'd several notes about my web page on Bowers of Davidson Co., TN. I thank everyone for their good words. James Bowers and William Pitt Bowers were both fairly well documented. Since 3 decades of census records are missing for TN and I didn't know who was who in Davidson Co., I looked at virtually every record I could find on Bowers in hopes of discovering that one piece of information that would sort out my own line which is Jeremiah Bowers of neighboring Wilson Co. The irony is James, William Pitt, and Jeremiah were all in NC for a time prior to migrating to TN. So, the mystery still remains as to how or whether these Middle TN Bowers are connected. P.S. If anyone has any corrections or sees anything contrary to what they know on the Davidson Co., TN Bowers, please let me know. These are strictly my research notes on the web page. It's always possible to have made a typo or made a wrong guess when analyzing data. I am not an authority on James' or William's line, only my own line. But I wanted to present what I had collected on everyone in Davidson Co. in hopes that it would help others find the sources/data they need, especially since I was so fortunate at the time to live 20 minutes from one of the best genealogy libraries in the U.S. (other than the LDS). I guess I'm lucky we moved so far from a genealogy library as good; otherwise, I'd be there everyday instead of organizing what I have! God works in mysterious ways! http://www.geocities.com/dhinson2000/

This is the James Bowers in Flodelle Hooton-Gates' book 'James Bowers Descendants New Jersey to Arkansas' 1980 James Bowers b: May 28, 1756 died after March 9, 1843 in Sumner Co, TN. I have a copy of this book and it is very interesting. I have studied the path of William Pitt Bowers & descendants from NJ to TN to IL and James Bowers & descendants NJ to TN to ARK. They pretty well stay on the same path until Lemuel Gomer Bowers, wife Evalina Betts-Bowers & family go to IL and some of James Bowers descendants went to ARK. Very interesting and makes you wonder. 1. [BOWER] THE CONTINUUM ~ EVERYONE PLEASE READ
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi family, I originally had this planned to be part of the Coffee this week. However, not everyone participates in Coffee so I thought it best to present this as a separate message: Are you aware we have a family project that, with enough participation, is absolutely _guaranteed_ to help every one of us? Really... it is. This project is called the Continuum and its direct purpose is meant to point out all sites on Web that have Bau(e)r/Bower(s) surnames and/or their variant spellings and are in one specific state or country. So, this project has the opportunity to be a fantastic locator tool. We've all been to the USGenWeb sites, then to the respective counties we do our research in. Laid out before you is all kinds of information relating to that county and her former residents. Now, imagine visiting a state site targeted for Bau(e)r/Bower(s) and her variant spellings ONLY. Your name... your state (or country)... that's it. In case I'm not making myself clear, below are Continuum sites currently online: Mark Middleton's Illinois site: http://www.geocities.com/heartland/grove/8230/ Wanda Roberts' Indiana site: http://www.crosswinds.net/~indbow Mary Drye's Michigan site: http://marydrye.www1.50megs.com/index/michigan.html Rob Bowers' Ohio site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rbower/ Mary Teeter's Pennsylvania site: http://www.geocities.com/heartland/cliffs/5410/ Gina Bower's Wisconsin site: http://www.crosswinds.net/~bowerwi Please, have a look at those sites and you'll see what I'm talking about. Frankly cousins, we need your help. After a year this project is still sitting at nine state sites and one country hosted. If you know even a little html you can host a state or country Continuum site on behalf of the family. In addition to the states listed above, California, Missouri and New York are hosted. Also, the sole country is Australia. There are still 41 states needing representation as well as the following countries Bower/Bauer surnames and/or their variant spellings are found in: Austria Germany Scotland Belgium Hungary South Africa Canada Ireland Spain Czech Republic Italy Switzerland England New Zealand Ukraine France Russia Wales As our hosts can tell you, you do not have the daily maintenance of a Web site once you're all set up. You have the option of accepting raw data from donors, or you can make a Continuum site one of nothing more than helpful links. The choice is yours! With exception of a few standards set to keep the project inline with the Cottage and Homestead, all creativity expression on the site is your choice. It also DOES NOT MATTER which family team you're in! Joe Baur (for example) can host a Continuum site just as well as Melinda Bowers (another example) or Ursula Bauer (yet one more example). All Continuum sites will represent Bauer, Baur, Bower and Bowers surnames in their represented state/country as well as the variant spellings we support (as found on the variants pages at the Homestead and Cottage). You can also partner with another cousin, if you'd like. You don't have to do this alone. I'd like to show you all something. As of 9:15 p.m. Saturday, the family teams having the following numbers of cousins: Bower 266 Bowers 121 Bauer 40 Baur 11 --- Total 438 cousins in the family to date SURELY there are more than nine of us in the family who know html. Won't you please consider giving the family some of your time to help not only yourself, but all of us and those who have yet to find the family? If we can't get this project off the ground, it will have to be disbanded, and that will only hurt all the cousins. If you'd like to join the project and host a Continuum site, please contact me at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. We really need your help and support. Thanks. Colleen

    3. ) ( ) Good Morning Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Does your family history have "bones" in it? If you've been with the family for at least three weeks, you'll probably want to skip the following paragraph… TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur ancestors or any of the 81+ variant spellings we research that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. Our home is Bower Community, located at <http://bowercommunity.com>. There, we currently have two sites: The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our primary homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://bowercommunity.com/homestead>. Smaller is our sister site, the Bower Cottage, houses most of our projects including an online GEDCOM fed by quite a few cousins from our lists. The Cottage is still small as far as material goes, however give us time and we'll have it filled really soon. The Cottage is at <http://bowercommunity.com/cottage>. DOES YOUR FAMILY HISTORY HAVE "BONES" IN IT? I read an interesting story sometime ago, and would like to relate it to you today. The story's intention was meant to make another point completely, but it actually parallels the reason why family historians shouldn't simply relate names, dates and facts in our genealogical searches, and why we search so hard for the stories that add flesh to our ancestors. Whether we're speaking of "flesh" or "bones," we all know what we're actually doing is bringing our ancestors "back to life" again. A little boy was very afraid of storms. Every night that one occurred, he would go to his parents' bedside, wanting a little comfort, a little assurance and protection... and to climb into bed with them. One night a storm was particularly bad with crashes of thunder resonating through the house. Dad wasn't surprised when he woke up to see his son with a pale face beside the bed, eyes anxious and wide with pleading. Dad finally got the boy to go back to bed, telling him everything would be okay, his folks were in the next room, and if the boy held his teddy bear very tightly it would be morning before he knew it and the sun would be shining. The next morning at breakfast, dad leaned over to his son seated at the table beside him. "How did the teddy bear work?" he asked. "Well," replied the boy, his small face very serious, "It worked ok... but it really would feel better if I could hold onto something with bones in it!" Teddy bears are wonderful items ~ comforting and warm, and nice to have in one's possession. A documented family tree is also a fine thing ~ secure and interesting, and generating a sense of pride. But names, dates, facts are simply that. If that is all our research is about, we really have "left the bones out of it". To create a genealogy with "bones," it is necessary to understand that events and personalities of another age have influenced our own, and reflects some of what we are today. Once we do understand, history can suddenly jump out from the pages of a book and impact on us with all its significance, from a family's personal insight, why and how the piece of history actually evolved. Without "bones" our research isn't much more than a laundry list of itemized facts that mean little to anyone except the person who compiled it ~ a list devoid of anything richly layered and textured with all the lessons and nuances of appreciation a family history can unfold. The "bones" of a family tree are not always found in any document. They are found by looking at a curiosity in a family while stepping into the time period in which the curiosity happened. They are found by paying attention to times and places and legends passed among people. The "bones" of a family can't be disinterred until the reason for digging up those bones is recognized. Only by giving substance can we give "life" back to those ancestors who blazed the path for us today. Family... it's what we're all about. To those of you with March birthdays, the family and I all wish you very happy and special day. You are loved!! I really enjoyed this time with you. It was so nice.
Really... it is. This project is called the Continuum and its specific purpose is meant to point out all sites on Web that have Bau(e)r/Bower(s) surnames and/or their variant spellings and are in one state or one country. Thanks. Colleen

    2. http://www.wico.net/~zacho/obitsB.htm Parke County, Indiana posted by Karen Zach zacho@wico.net BOWERS Found in a scrapbook -- no date/name of paper, etc.-- "Obituary" -- Felix Bowers, the grand old gentleman so well and favorably known throughout this country as Uncle Felix, the Country Blacksmith, was born in Davidson County, NC near Thomasville, Oct 16, 1824, and quietly and peacefully fell asleep Tuesday evening, july 23, 1918, at 8 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Susan Zachmire, age 93 years, 9 months and 7 days. Passing out of the shadow, into eternal day, Why, oh why do we call it dying this sweet going away? Uncle Felix had been in really poor health for many months, and years but bore his infirmaties without complaint. In early manhood he united with the Lutheran Church in NC prior to his removal to this state and lived a humble, patient, christian life, doing as he wishe to be done by . He was united in marr. to Catherine Hepler in 1847, who preceded him in death in 1912. To this union three little girls came to brighten the home, now known as Mrs. Delphina Myers, decease wife of Eli Myers, Mrs Mary Zackmire and Mrs. Susan Zackmire. he with his wife emigrated to Fountain Co, In in 1858. The little log cabin which they erected and live din until death of his devoted wife is still standing. He was engage din farming and as a blacksmith, during the active part of his life. He also made a home for his aged mother, who, after having suffered for four years, preceded him in death at a ripe age of 99 1/2 years. She lived in all the presidential administrations up to her death except Washington and Adams. He leaves two daughters, fourteen grandchildren, 27 gr. grandchildren and one great, great grandchild with a host of relatives and friends to mourn his departure. Uncle Felix is gone Today the home circle is again broken one more link is gone. There waits an empty chair but his kindly deeds and friendly helpfulness are his monument and our sorrowing tears his epitaph. 1. [BOWER] Obit - Catherine Hepler Bowers - 1824-1912 - Parke Co., Indiana
    2. http://www.wico.net/~zacho/obitsB.htm Parke County Indiana posted by Karen Zach zacho@wico.net ?? as to paper -- newspaper clipping-- Catherine Hepler, the grand old lady so well and favorably known was b. in Davis Co NC May 1, 1824 died at her home naer Yeddo Aug 24, 1912 age 88Y3M27D. She was united in marr. to Felix BOWERS in her native state in 1847. To this union was b 3 dau: Mrs. Delphia Myers (dec. wife of Eli); Mrs. Mary Zackmire wife of John and Mrs. Thomas Zackmire wife of Thomas Zackmire (sic) all of Ft. Co. She emigrated with her husband to Ft. Co in in 1859. She became a member of the Lutheran church at the age of 16 and lived an exemplary Christian life until her death which was caused by a fall, breaking one of the femur bones. Dec. was truly a great and noble lady, if nobility and greatness is measured by kind, deeds paticence, unselfishness, humility, generosity, courtesy and sincerity; for I will say without fear of contradiction that this noble lady possessed all of these vitures. I have written many death accounts and obituaries but in summing the qualities of these scores of people I find none in my opinion that deserve greater praise than this noble woman, whom it seems was almost faultless. Aunt Kate never sought notority but was contented to live an humble patient Christian life, whose ever thought was for the good of humanity; she was never wrought for her own personal welfare, but through generosity she was always known to almost exceed her duty. We need not attedmpt to eulogize her life or character because all who knew her know that my eulogy would fall short of her merit. While Aunt Kate is gone her kind deeds and precious memories remain. If our lives are influenced by those with whom we associate and meet, then the subject of this sketch has wrought a positive and permanent good in the tide of human existence. Those who like the deceased could conscientiously face the world throughout their lives need not fear to meet their Pilot face to face "When they have crossed the bar." Ourprayer i sthat this ideal life may be an inspiration to all, that they may emulate it with a full assurance of a just reward. She leaves an aged and worthy husband; two daughters, 14 grandchildren, 22 gr. grandch; one sister and one aged brother, uncle Dave Hepler aged 92 together with a host of relatives & friends to mourn her departure, which has deprived them of a loving mother, sister and wife and grandmother and the community of a true friend. Funeral services were rendered at Wallace Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. Hunt after which the remains were interred in the cemetery adjoining, to await the ressurection of the just. We tender the bereaved family our sincere & heartfelt sorrow in this sad event. Fran akabana@cs.com

    1. [BOWER] Obit - Milton T. Bowers - 1852-1931 - Parke Co., Indiana
    2. http://www.wico.net/~zacho/obitsB.htm Parke County Indiana posted by Karen Zach zacho@wico.net obituary -- no paper given -- August 23, 1852 to October 28, 1931 -- Within these dates the life history of Milton T. Bowers was written. We knew him as an upright man, fair and just in all his dealings; invariably willing to do his part. With courage to face his convictions of right and duty, and ever ready to extend a helping hand to those in need. Loyal in his obligations to church, family and friends, of whom one can faithfully say, "He lived by the side of the road and was a friend to man." A companionship of more than 50 years was unbroken until withing a few days, when Aunt Sarah passed away, through the portal of life to life eternal; to take up a new journey there as here -- together -- always together. Both fared forth gladly -- then who should weep? Who should regret their passing. Is this not their day of great adventure? Their homecoming? Ah! even death is beautiful, when you have lived silently -- patiently, for then you go foward untrampled and unafraid, as they have gone leaving us memories. Fran akabana@cs.com
