I have received the messages about Family Treemaker selling information on at least 4 of the mail lists I belong to. What in the world are you people so riled up about? I have used Family Treemaker for several years and they have made no bones about the fact that information that is submitted to them will be included on CD's and such. I consider that I am paying for the convenience of being able to easily locate what I am looking for, their time in indexing everything and such. I do not feel I am paying for information. At no time have they misrepresented anything. I work full time, have a serious illness, and am involved in other groups in my community. I don't have unlimited time to search for hours to find information that Family Treemaker or other sites have located and can guide me to in a few minutes. As for incorrect information---- Anyone who has done genealogy for more than an hour knows that everyones data base has some flaws in it. I have found flaws in information submitted to the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as information that I have recerived directly from another researcher. I have received corrections to my data base from others that I have shared it with and consider they are doing me a favor by calling it to my attention. If you choose not to do business with Family Treemaker then don't but please stop this unfair campaign. I heard nothing in the postings that I did not receive directly from Family Treemaker themselves. Roberta Wunder

We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. Our home is Bower Community, located at <http://bowercommunity.com>. There, we currently have two sites: The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our primary homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://bowercommunity.com/homestead>. Smaller is our sister site, the Bower Cottage, which houses most of our projects including an online GEDCOM fed by quite a few cousins from our lists. Find the Cottage is at <http://bowercommunity.com/cottage>. THAT AWFUL FRONT PAGE! To be sure, I am now firmly, most stoically convinced that you are the nicest, most patient group of people I will ever come to know! I visited our home this week. Oh... my... gosh! I can't believe something I planned so well, turned out the way it did; I'd wanted to try something new. I did and it sucks green eggs! I won't do that again! Oh, the front page looks great and all, but to have it follow you into the house??? No, that wasn't in the plan. I will be changing the front page again sometime in the next couple days so it doesn't "follow" you inside! You can expect another change relatively soon. :-| THE REUNION Hot and muggy... it was the only way to describe that July 1st day. Most people didn't seem to mind the weather, though. The surrounding forest provided enough shade to keep everyone relatively cool. Horses, buggies and buckboards were off'ed to one side. It was a "raising" and everyone in the community enjoyed the comaraderie while assisting the newest family in erecting a magnificent log cabin. Tonight the family would sleep in their new home. The couple's children joined other young ones at play while the women-folk talked and laid out a sumptuous pot luck meal. The arduous task of clearing trees and removing stumps had been completed only two days ago. All the men had left to do was to put up the dwelling. The lake just across the yard would provide not only that necessity of life but an unbridled vista of beauty and recreational enjoyment. Life was exciting in this new state! Life was good! Where once stood a log cabin now appeared a three-bedroom, clapboard home. Most people didn't know that, though. The forest was reduced to a small grouping of trees on the east side of the house and it was there that the day was unfolding. The gathering centered around a tiny, gray-haired woman and her stooped-over, equally gray-haired husband. Eighty-five years old now, she was the one who remembered those early days, and the only one still living. Viewing the lake brought back such memories for her! She saw the home, but in her eyes saw instead the cabin and those younger years, forgetting how really hard they were. Her body may have aged with time, however, vivid memories flooded her mind with the moment. Her parents and siblings came back to life with those long-ago visions, and she realized how much she missed them. The old woman's reverie was interrupted when a child came up and slid a frail hand into her withered, aged one... a 6-year old girl it was ~ with the very likeness of herself in her youth. The old woman saw in that second how the circle of life had come back around to her through her great-granddaughter. The girl's older sister came up to retrieve her younger sibling and the old woman saw again, another piece of herself. "Sit down here with me and let me tell you a story..." she said to the girls. The afternoon became one of memories for both generations, and another hot and muggy July 1st reunion ambled by. The house is gone now, but most people don't even realize one was ever there. Cars fill the cement parking lot as people amble to and from the pavillion over near the lake. It's a family reunion! July 1st the perfect day... a hot one to be sure, and muggy... Trees would be nice to sit under if there were any. But, it's a perfect day, otherwise. Everyone is excited to see siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins they haven't seen in years!... and some they've never met! Family elders say that this used to be an annual event... that the family meets here because it has ancestral significance. Only two people really know... two elderly women who took the time to spend an afternoon with an old woman and her memories during their brief encounter. This day, at least of them will pass her stories along, too. Will you or your child be the one who receives them at the next reunion, listening in awe to a life of what once was? After all it's family... and it's what we're all about. I really enjoyed this time with you. It was so nice. I hope you all have a fantastic upcoming week. I wish you all a week filled with health, fun, productivity, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'
Lita, Yes, they will have to do without my money too, but I will continue to share anything I have with anybody who I think I might be of help to. Hopefully they won't be selling it, but I don't care if they share it with other researchers. I know it starts getting irritating when you know the same information is available from other sources for free. We just need to continue to let others know where these sources are. That's one of the things I think is so great about the Bowers family. Most are very willing to share what they find with other family researchers. I have met some really great people through the forums. Some were related in one way or another, some were not. Some I would never have been in contact with if it weren't for the message forums. Let's hope that these forums will continue to be free to all. I too, am worried about the direction it seems some things are going, and we all need to help. I think it is especially important to help those who are just getting started in their searches, to find those sources that are free, instead of thinking the info is not available unless they pay for it. It is also irritating when you go to a source and it looks like it is free, but all they are doing is advertising for something they have for sale. I for one, feel as if I have wasted valuable time that could have been put to better use elsewhere. Hope you didn't think I was sticking up for these practices. I was just trying to point out what their thinking might be as to why they feel it is necessary to charge for their service. I have noticed in some cases, even though they charge for some of their info, that they sometimes point out that you can also get this information from another source that does not charge for it. Anyhow, I hope we can all keep sharing. As Coleen always says, "FAMILY IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT." Diana
I want to share my info - I LOVE to share my info - FREELY! It upsets me that I have it and will share what I have for free but those companies will take it and sell it while those buying have no idea where it could be gotten free! I understand the companies have expenses. Oh, well, I will go on helping anyone who asks but the companies will have to do without my money as I haven't enough to access "pay for" info thru them. It's so neat the family members I have gotten in touch with since I've been hunting online! My late aunt's daughter and I were looking at my info at the same time and that's how I met her more or less. She is the niece of my birthfather I met only 8 years ago and who died last year on my birthday. I was online looking checking for reponses to queries to my Symmonds posts and went on to someone else and an email came thru telling me that she was just reading a post I had sent in which was the one I had just been reading! We hope to meet next month sometime. Other than my birthdad and his wife I haven't met anyone else from the family. But I have exchanged email with my two half brothers and my step brother's wife. I'll be quiet now! lol > Yes, it is unethical for them to sell this information, but we all search > the > Internet in the hopes we will run across something that connects to what we > Lita A good friend overlooks your broken down gate and admires the flowers in your window. Yes, it is unethical for them to sell this information, but we all search the Internet in the hopes we will run across something that connects to what we are researching. It is up to us to check out to see if this information is correct. If you know it is incorrect, it seems to me that you would want to correspond with the party involved to correct the information so information disseminated would not be erroneous. When you correspond with someone, is it not to either add to your own information or to contribute to theirs? And what's to say that the information you passed on was not also found from other sources? After all, if you have it, others probably have it also. Isn't sharing what it's all about? It's like a puzzle. Some of us have a few pieces and someone else may have a few other pieces. It takes all the pieces to make a complete picture. And sometimes we try to put some of the pieces in the wrong place and eventually realize this just isn't going to work. Sometimes we need someone else to say, Hey-that doesn't fit there. Then we have to keep searching for the right piece. If we are so possessive of our information that we don't want others to use it because we did the hard work, then don't put it on the Internet or don't share the information. By the same token, if we have this attitude, then we shouldn't be using anything found on the Internet that is not an official record. Yes, it is sad that some people or organizations are trying to make money off of the work of others, but not posting to or using these sites may keep you from finding that one clue to break down that brick wall, or to run across that cousin or relative we know nothing about. While I don't like what is going on, I'm sure these companies incur many expenses to furnish us a place to post or share this information. We have a choice as to whether we are willing to pay for this service or to post on a service that we know is charging a fee for information they are getting for free. Only putting your information on the Bowers family site is unrealistic, as most of us are searching for other names too, that may or may not be associated with the Bowers family directly. Are you also going to quit searching these other sites for information you have not been able to find on our family site? Information about our family is not just ours. It is part of the heritage of anyone who might in some way be tied to this family, and should in my opinion, be shared freely, no matter who did the hard work. Diana
Hi Beautiful People CAUTION: DON'T THROW THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATH WATER!!!! I am usually the quiet one but now I must speak. I subscribe to the FTM site not to get their newest production of someone elses version of what they think their family tree is (which I may add is approximately 50% incorrect) but as a resource to look at books that are out of print which they have in their library and do research at my computer. Those books, census, indexes and records so scanned into their files are correct and a viable source for our research. The individual family trees in the World Family Tree Collection and whatever they call the other collection are a compilation of submitted family trees from their subscribers, taken from the LDS site or borrowed from information found on line. Is this unethical? In my opinion it is. (The ones I have viewed are riddled with mistakes, and I am not going to send them the corrections. Their reputation in the genealogical commuinty is continuing to slip) Now if we allow this to govern how we exchange information between each other on line then WE are the losers. The Bowers site is an award winning site (just had to add that) if someone comes in and copies some correct data from this site and tries to sell it to someone else I feel this is very unethical but not something we cannot control. The purpose of this site and the other sites for the other Surnames is to exchange freely the information between each other for the express purpose of compiling the most accurate information on the family that we can muster. What keeps them from "borrowing" from the BOWER site and our private ones? Time? I have been concerned about this for some time and even moreso since the merger of Rootsweb. But what can we do? We have all been sharing our information freely because we enjoy this hobby. For companies to gather it to sell without having to pay for it makes me angry too. I have found my reseach info submitted to FamilyTreeMaker by others I gave it to without even asking my persmission or giving me credit for my research. And, we don't know if their portion of research is accurate either. Everything should always be checked and not taken as the gospell. I have continued to share genealogy information freely, but this problem has been making me wary of posting online. I know the Internet has been wonderful for genealogy and a help to those not near research facilities, plus it has helped us meet so many cousins. I really worry about the future of free sharing of genealogy information online. I wonder how long it will be before Genealogy.com will next make Rootsweb and all the work we have done gathering data for the various state and county pages a monthly fee genealogy service. I hope someone out there has the funds to take them to court should this happen. Rootsweb is our data and should remain so without charge. Hi Donna, I'm also extremely concerned about Rootsweb eventually going commercial ... something I know that's bound to happen. It's just a matter of when. There is only one thing I've been able to come up with since their merger and that's to keep all our data out of their sites and on our own. Then we have to promote the domain like crazy! That was a prime reason I tried not to move us to Rootsweb when we were having all those problems with Crosswinds and GeoCities. I feel we need to keep ourselves separated from the genealogical sites just in case they do go commercial. Like you, it frosts me that freely-given data is being sold via subscription or cd. If you or anyone else can come up with a better solution, I'm certainly "all ears" and would love to know your idea(s). The family's Retreat was moved off MyFamily.com because of them rumored to be lifting data from sites. I've even given thought to figuring out some way to bringing the Retreat to our domain, but I don't know all the programming we'd need to do a live chatroom. All I know is... I don't post at GenForum any more, nor will I. The GenConnect boards at Rootsweb, I'm even hesitant to use them now, though I have once for several places/names. *sigh* ... here everyone had a good thing going until... Well, at least we're all getting forewarned. We have the opportunity to fully contain ourselves on our own domain and promote it like crazy, or continue as things are for a while and see what happens. But whatever we do, we should do it as a family... or a majority thereof. The more united we are, the better our chances of keeping our material protected... at least, that's the way I see it. Besides, we're all family... we SHOULD be standing together in this! :) Colleen Donna Hinson wrote: > > I have been concerned about this for some time and even moreso since the > merger of Rootsweb. Hi everyone, In the interest of keeping everyone informed, I'm forwarding a message that's begun to circulate around the genealogical community. You may have seen this before and if so, please just delete. But if not then you'll definitely wanted to read this. In this particular instance mine is not to sway your opinion, but to enable you to make an informed one with regard to your wallets and the information you possess. We use FTM & the Genealogy Library and didn't realize we even had the access rights to Genealogy Library for a year (ah DUH!) we then found out that we had problems accessing it. A month ago we contacted FTM & told them of our problem, they Not only answered their phones BUT they were helpful & gave us 2 more years at no additional charge.....Frank
Hi Robert, I've been looking over my notes as I'm planning to go to Houston if possible next week and wanted to research while there. In doing so, I wanted to look up a few more records for Todd and Logan Co. and a couple more 1870 for Butler Co. where it looks like possibly some of my Jeremiah's son's may have gone and maybe his widow. I had obtained a KY list on Genealogy.com during free day but noticed my 1870 census index did not include all the same people. Pulled out an 1850 census for Warren Co. for Barnabus Bowers which I obtained for some unknown reason last trip. Don't know how I didn't notice, but there were two other Bowers listed and evidently may be missing from the 1850 KY printed index. I had the entire 1850 KY index for Bowers and only Barnabus was listed. I feel they are father and sons; they were living next door to one another, or at least the census taker went from one to the other. I will note them here for you. Hope there's a clue. I don't know how these people fit in with mine if they do at all. 1850 Warren Co. KY, Pg 48 Line 3: Barnabus Bowers, 44, male, Farmer, $600 value real estate, b. KY Sarah, 39, female, b. KY John W., 13, male, b. KY Lydia A., 11, female, b. KY Line 7: William J. Bowers, 32, male, Shoemaker, b. KY Margaret, 26, female, b. KY Jane, 9, female, b. KY Elizabeth, 7, female John W., 5, male, b. KY Catharine, 4, female, b. KY Magaret, 2, female, b. KY Edmund, 1 mo., b. KY Elizabeth Smith, 17, female, b. KY Line 16: Wm. Bowers, 67, male, Farmer, $1000 value of real estate, b. NC Elizabeth, 59, female, b. VA A William is listed in 1820, Warren Co., pg. 35, and in 1830, pg. 96, could not find listed for 1840 but sure he's there and probably same person. I am obtaining a book of research done on James Bowers of Todd/Logan Co. area who turns out to be my ggg-grandfather's brother. I'm not sure what's in the book (she's now deceased) but am hoping she put in any notes about all Bowers she researched in the area. That would help! I will send for when I return from Houston so it'll be several weeks. If you don't hear about it from list postings, jog my memory about it. Hope some of this helps you...think I will post the census notes too but don't think there's anyone on the list working this area, or they've left the list. I definitely wish I wasn't having to work in so many states...my Bowers traveled more than I have! And, I never knew there were so many Bowers either. it's beginning to overwhelm my brain. TTYL.
