    1. [BOWER] ROLL CALL: Bowers, James, c1800 , Cheshire, England
    2. Mary Thit
    3. Dear cousins I am researching my BOWERS ancestors and descendants who originated in Cheshire/Lancashire, England. Some migrated to Australia, others to New Zealand and perhaps the USA and other countries. I have got back to James BOWERS who lived in or near Stockport, Cheshire, England. I do not know the date of his birth but estimate to be c1800 or earlier. Here is some information - Descendants of James BOWERS 1 James BOWERS b. c1800 (or earlier) .... 2 John Bowers b: Abt. 1817 Stockport, Cheshire, England ........ +Mary Ann Sale b: Abt. 1818 England m: 17 June 1838 District of Cheadle, Cheshire(Stockport) ........... 3 Margaret Bowers b: 1847 Manchester, Lancashire ............... +John Entwhistle b: Abt. 1845 Lancashire m: 1 November 1871 Charlestown, Lancs ........... 3 Maria Bowers b: 10 March 1850 Manchester, Lancashire ............... +William Hayes b: Abt. 1847 Lancashire m: 24 November 1871 Charlestown, Lancs ........... 3 Mary Ann Bowers b: 2 September 1852 Worsley, Lancs d: 20 August 1919 Auckland, N.Z. ............... +Joseph Royle b: 5 November 1853 Pendlebury, Salford m: 23 May 1872 Charlestown, Lancs d: 4 July 1934 Auckland, N.Z. Mary Ann Bowers and Joseph Royle migrated to Queensland, Australia in 1883 with their young family. About 1903 Mary and Joseph left Australia to settle in New Zealand with their daughter Elizabeth and her husband Carl OLSSON/OLSON (of Sweden). Elizabeth and Carl had three known children - Carl, Olga and Esma born in the early 1900s. Mary Ann Bowers was my great-grandmother and I am descended from her son Elijah ROYLE who stayed behind in Queensland, Australia when his parents went to New Zealand. Another daughter of Mary Ann, Rosetta ROYLE also stayed in Australia and moved to Melbourne, Victoria when she married. Good luck to you all in your BOWER searches. 1. [BOWER] ROLL CALL: Bowersmith, Jacob & Isaac 1775 -1900 MD,OH,IL
    2. Harriet V. Schultz
    3. This is only the 2nd time I have posted even though I have been enjoying this site for over 2 years. I have a variant surname. In 1994 we began searching our SMITH surname. Relatives had said that a Cherokee Indian with the last name of SMITH had married an English woman with the last name of BOWER. We have found nothing to verify this unless it was before 1775. With so many duplications of first names I am having a terrible time sorting out my 163 BOWERSMITH'S. I would really appreciate any suggestions or help. Thanks BOWERSMITH, Jacob b. 1775-1780 in MD. (great great grandfather?) m. Mathilda JENKINS 1815 in Loudon Co., VA. she died in 1838 in OH. (May have been his 2nd marriage) moved to OH 1820 to 1830 m. Olive KENT 1840 in Union Co., OH moved to Clay Co., IL in 1863 d. in Effingham Co., IL in 1878 (I am trying to sort out 6 Jacob Bowersmith's) BOWERSMITH, Hosea Wm. (great grandfather) b. 1838 (probably in OH) m. 1859 Sarah Ann WOOD in Montgomery Co., IL was in 1860 Hardin Co., OH Census moved to Clay Co., IL in 1863 1864 listed in court case in Clay Co., IL 1865 5th child was born 1868 another court case in Clay Co., IL disappeared after April 1868 1870 2 of the middle children were indentured 1870 this branch began using the surname SMITH with BOWER being used as a middle name. 1872 Sarah Ann married George W. TOLBERT BOWERSMITH, George (grandfather) b. 1860 Hardin Co., Hale Twp., OH parents moved to Clay Co., IL 1863 m. Elizabeth Jane DYER 1882, Clay Co., IL (don't know what happened to her) m. Cecelia GENTIL in Perry Co., MO in 1888 1909 family moved to IL BOWERSMITH, Isaac b. abt. 1800 (the Jacob born 1775-1780 was probably his father) Have not found any listing for this Isaac's wife. Sept.1838 acquitted of a murder in Delaware Co., OH d. Union Co., OH in 1840 leaving 9 children, 7 had to have guardians appointed for them. BOWERSMITH, Isaac b. abt. 1820 listed as a clergyman in 1850 Delaware Co., OH Census (father may have been Jacob) m. Harriet Thompson 1842 in Union Co., OH had 7 children BOWERSMITH, Isaac b. abt. 1837 (son of the Isaac b. abt. 1800) I have a lot of Civil War information which may belong to this Isaac but nothing else.

    1. [BOWER] ROLL CALL- Bower, Yorkshire, England
    2. Bobbie Krawchuk
    3. Hi: I'm new to this but really enjoy visiting the Bower Homestead site. I am seeking ascendants of my father, Robert William Jack Bower born in Lowestoft,Suffolk, England, 1919. Immigrated to Canada in 1927. His father was Robert Archibald Ainsworth Bower, born Jan 7, 1892 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England; died in England approx. 1975. Parents Thomas Bower and Annie Fayette(?), brothers Thomas and Jack, sisters Gertie and Ann. I have pretty well scoured the GENUKI website which is chock full of information on England. I am looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of the 1901 census in England. If anyone has an interest in Coats of Arms, this site is very good http://www.designsofwonder.com/ Just type in your surname and it will do a search for you. Hope to hear from someone with a link to my family. Bobbie Bower Krawchuk, British Columbia, Canada

Did Isaac have a sister named Cynthia who married John Morris? I keep getting soooo close with some of you, then turn up with a zero. After 25 years of searching, I really believe it's about time I get some kind of breakthrough ... unless of course, my family actually DID evolve from the moss on the south side of a tree in the primeval forest! :) Thanks for any help. 2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi again family, I hope you're all having a SUPER, SUNNY Sunday! :) Since people are getting out and about, visiting all those great genealogy places, let's have a roll call starting today. However, in order for me to keep it all straight with the cross-postings though, we need to do this in an ordered fashion. Here's how I've set it up: All four research teams will be holding a roll call this week HOWEVER it will be staggered. The BOWER-L, being the largest, will go first ... starting today. BAUER-L, BAUR-L, BOWERS-L ... DO NOT POST YET. You will all be receiving those messages pertaining to your surnames as they come through the BOWER-L. As before, In a few days, once the traffic has died down here, the BAUR and BOWERS teams will hold theirs. Several days later, the BAUER-L will finish us up. I will notify you when to begin (depending on the influx of BOWER-L roll call messages, it could be on Thursday). Cousins on the BOWER-L: Once their rolls call begin, expect to receive EVERY message coming from each of the BAUER-L, BAUR-L and BOWERS-L as they are posted. Conversely, all BAUR, BOWERS and BAUER messages in the BOWER-L roll call will be crossposted over to our smaller counterparts. For the next two weeks everyone please be sure to keep your mailboxes emptied so we don't have a slew of bounced messages and you won't miss out on even one post. Cousins who are homebound ... be sure NOT to skip this roll call. One of the cousins who travel might see your message and select it to incorporate with his/her research trip, providing you with the results! (yes, it DOES happen here in the family) Roll call? What IS she talking about now??? For those of you who are brand new to online genealogy, or just genealogy in general, this next part is for you: TO OUR NEWBIES and NOVICES ~~ (Print this out if you need to) ~~ ROLL CALL FAQs *** A roll call means EVERYONE in the family should post those lines they are looking for. It's kind of like reporting in to the list saying, "here I am ... looking for (whoever)." This is also the time our lurkers come out and "report in." *** You should expect traffic on the BOWER-L to be very heavy this week and part of next. Although you can post a query anytime during the year, roll calls here are special because nearly everyone posts ... including our lurkers. It's an important time and you don't want to miss out, but your mailboxes are going to get full fast. Please be sure to check them daily and keep them emptied so I don't get a bunch of bounced back messages. *** Although the traffic is going to get heavier and may be a strain on your time to keep up, PLEASE STAY WITH US. This will only last about two weeks, if that. You don't want to unsubscribe just as an inline cousin is posting a line you've been watching for. *** Be sure to use ONLY that email address to post with that you signed up to the list with. Any other address will not be recognized by Rootsweb and their servers will kick your message out of the system. *** Send your roll call messages DIRECTLY TO THE LIST at <BOWER-L@rootsweb.com>. Please DO NOT send them to me as I am only one person with one line when, what you want, is for ALL the cousins to see who you're looking for. *** There is no special format. You just need to remember to include names, dates and places as best you can. If you're nervous about this, you might want to sit back a day or two and read some of the other cousins' posts and see how they did it, then just do what they did. Everyone has their own style and preference for setting up a roll call message. *** If you're a newbie, the best thing you can do for yourself is to announce it first thing in your message! It alerts the rest of us to be especially watchful of your material. PLEASE MAKE YOUR SUBJECT LINE READ SOMETHING LIKE THIS: ROLL CALL: Bower, Isaac (1856-1901, CT > NY) ROLL CALL: Baur, Johann (Germany, PA, IL) PLEASE DO _NOT_ MAKE YOUR SUBJECT LINE READ LIKE THIS: John Bowers (or) Bauer family (or) Roll call Help us to help you by giving clear subject lines, okay? Thanks. :) I hope this answers any questions you might have, but if not, go right ahead and ask! Your post is every bit as important as mine or any other cousin's. :) Colleen

    3. ) ( ) Good Morning Family! .-.,--^--. ( Come on in. . . \\|`----'| - The coffee pot's on. . . \| |// ...and we even have decaf, | |/ tea, and hot chocolate! \ / ------ Today's topics include: 1. Welcome to new cousins 2. Touching the soul of the family ... 3. Spring has struck the family! 4. The Continuum 5. Kuzins Korner TO OUR NEWEST COUSINS ~~ On behalf of the entire family, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those cousins who came into the family fold this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with Bower[s]/Bauer or Baur ancestors or any of the 81+ variant spellings we research that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. If you haven't visited the homesite of this list yet, you are encouraged to do so. Our home is Bower Community, located at <http://bowercommunity.com>. There, we currently have two sites: The Bower Family Homestead [a.k.a., the Homestead] is our primary homesite and the gathering place for much of our information. It waits to join us all in welcoming you into the family at <http://bowercommunity.com/homestead>. Smaller is our sister site, the Bower Cottage, which houses most of our projects including an online GEDCOM fed by quite a few cousins from our research groups. Find the Cottage is at <http://bowercommunity.com/cottage>. TOUCHING OF THE SOUL OF THE FAMILY Did everyone notice the suggestion posted by one of our own yesterday? Did everyone read it as closely as me? In it she said she was posting only to us because she "feel[s] so comfortable here knowing that no one will jump on me about it." Whether you caught it or not, that statement said a LOT about us as a family. We are a family you know ... and we stand together as one. SPRING HAS STRUCK THE FAMILY! :) Cousins, I don't know about you, but the draw of the warm weather has pulled me away from my computer. I'm spending a great deal of time laying-in a garden and just enjoying being outside again. But, I've missed you all terribly and wasn't about to let yet another Sunday go by without spending this special time with you. I think, from the number of messages that have gone through in the past couple weeks, that you're also enjoying this "come alive" time again (well, for those of us in the northern hemisphere, anyway). Our cousins in Australia and New Zealand are beginning to settle in for their hibernating period, winter. We've had quite a few people unsubscribing ~ something that normally happens when spring hits. Then those same cousins return to us in the fall. Having seen this happen the last couple years ... When you're out walking cemeteries, visiting research facilities away from your town or state, please extract not only your lines, but ALL our 'B' Consortium names (Bauer, Baur, Bower, Bowers) and their variant spellings. We have cousins with us who are Bowersmith, Bourse and Booher. You'll find all the variant spellings at the Homestead on the variants page just off the main hallway. THE CONTINUUM I am very pleased to annound that Vicky Bowers-Gielau has agreed to host one portion of the Canada Continuum site ~ British Columbia. If she feels she can handle the entire country, she'll let me know. However, if there is someone who would like to host the rest of Canada's provinces or, like Vicky, just take one ... that would be terrific! Thanks, Vicky! Lucky me! ... I now have a helper on my New York site. Jodi has put in quite a few hours wandering suring the Web for New York sites where we'll find Bower/Bauer, etc. data. She has saved me a great deal of time and I can only appreciate tremendously the load she has taken from me. She has made the updating of my Continuum site a LOT quicker and easier. Thanks so much, Jodi! :) We currently have Australia, California, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin represented ... and now, British Columbia. We'd love to have you join us, build an online Continuum site, and aid in our efforts to get all those (for instance) Iowa Bower[s]/Bauer/Baur family sites that are already online linked from one site rather than having to use a generalized search engine like Netscape, HotBot or InfoSeek to search them out. Sites in this project parallel those of the GenWeb but center only on the 'B' Consortium names and their variant spellings. Continuum sites can be as simple as state/country information and links to material in your chosen region or, if the host elects, can add raw material to his/her site. Continuum hosts join a private email list set aside specifically for this project to discuss design ideas, project problems, and pass along helps to each other regarding the Continuum. In this way, there is always immediate help. To create a site, you'll have to learn at least _some_ HTML (the coding language to put pages online) if you don't already know it. With the exception of three elements, your creativity is your own. If you think you might be interested in being a Continuum site host, please contact me at <ladyaudris@earthlink.net>. KUZINS KORNER Vicky Bowers-Gielau <vichary@home.com> is living on the edge of her nerves right now. The doctors found a lump in her breast that is growing. She is scheduled for surgery on May 1st, currently for a biopsy. I'm sure she would appreciate your prayers and hearing words of support from all of you right now. I have begun working on my next book, (my mom's) so you'll probably hear even less from me than normal for a while. My mother will be 81 this year and this is something I just can't put off any more. I desperately want to get her book published so I can hand it to her. I know you're all very patient with me when I get behind here, but I'll work diligently to keep everything pretty much up-to-date. I expect to go to the publisher in March, next year (if not sooner.) Family ... it's what we're all about. After being away from you these last few weeks, this has been such a pleasure for me to spend this time with you. I hope your upcoming week is filled with health, fun, productivity, and above all, filled with love. ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'

    3. Sounds good to me. Unfortunately I don't have the hard or software to do that myself, but it would be a good visual aid. Might even help prompt some ideas of where to look for others if you saw general patterns that could be applied to that or other areas. You might need to keep in mind the breadwinners' occupations, though, as migration trends will vary according to these as well. Hello! just had an idea that i thought i would run by the family and see if i'm reinventing the wheel. i am sending it only to this list because i feel so comfortable here knowing that no one will jump on me about it. ok ... so what if you could 1) get simple outline maps for the areas where your ancestors lived, at any scale that is appropriate or interesting to you, from continent-sized to state, county or within a town even. 2) mark the place where your ancestors resided at each time where you have data, and make each successive map contain the previous information with lines connecting the points. 3) scan the maps and then place them into a genealogy program that can make slide shows of associated "photos" like mine can. i use Family Ties Deluxe. 4) by running the slide show rather quickly you *should* get a cartoon animation effect of the way your family or families spread over an area. whaddya think? has someone already done this? what about doing it for different lineages in different colors, showing how they converged perhaps in one area leading to a marriage that resulted in the combined lineage that leads to yourself or someone else? i'm thinking of it in terms of a teaching tool to help my young daughter learn about her family history in ways that might make it more interesting for her. 3. Hi Jessie and all, This sounds like a terrifically novel idea to me! :) Now, how do we go about applying it? Jessie, since this is your baby, how about doing up your maps, animating them, and sending them to me to be put up at the Homestead. This way, we can all actually see your idea in action. I can do a private viewing for everyone, or simply splash it right in front of the world. Either way ... I LIKE IT! Thanks so much for sharing this with us first. ... The 'B' Consortium ... leading and paving the way ... yeah! :) Colleen jessie wrote: > > Hello! > > just had an idea that i thought i would run by the family and see if > i'm reinventing the wheel. i am sending it only to this list because > i feel so comfortable here knowing that no one will jump on me about > it. > > ok ... so what if you could > > 1) get simple outline maps for the areas where your ancestors lived, > at any scale that is appropriate or interesting to you, from > continent-sized to state, county or within a town even. > > 2) mark the place where your ancestors resided at each time where you > have data, and make each successive map contain the previous > information with lines connecting the points. > > 3) scan the maps and then place them into a genealogy program that can > make slide shows of associated "photos" like mine can. i use Family > Ties Deluxe. > > 4) by running the slide show rather quickly you *should* get a cartoon > animation effect of the way your family or families spread over an > area. > > whaddya think? has someone already done this? what about doing it > for different lineages in different colors, showing how they converged > perhaps in one area leading to a marriage that resulted in the > combined lineage that leads to yourself or someone else? i'm thinking > of it in terms of a teaching tool to help my young daughter learn > about her family history in ways that might make it more interesting > for her. > > Jessie Elder > > ==== BOWER Mailing List ==== > To post messages to the Bower discussion list, send them to > BOWER-L@rootsweb.com
