    3. No I don't think so. "My" Anna Laura was probably born about 1870-1875 was married in Indiana in 1892 and lived in the Muncie Indiana most of her life. She married 3 men that I have names for: George Maddox (my ancestor...the 1892 marriage) and then a Charles Rawlins and someone with the last name Childs. Thanks for replying. 1. [BOWER] new clue in my hunt...
    2. Marilyn Shields
    3. Hello - I have been looking for years for the parents of my g-g-grandmother, Laura Bower. She married George Maddox in Muncie, IN in 1892. They had two children together then she divorced him and remarried two additional times that I know of. I just received copies of the divorce papers and on one of them she is listed as Anna Laura Bower. I wondered if anyone has an Anna or Anna L that would have been born about 1870 probably in Indiana or Ohio. Since I've had no luck finding anything on Laura I have hopes that maybe Anna is the key.... Thanks! Marilyn Shields

    1. [BOWER] Bowers sighting - Eskridge, KS (Edmonds, Smith, Harker)
    2. >From the McLouth Times (Jefferson Co. KS) for Friday, Sept 4, 1896: "Mrs. Amos Edmonds left last Friday evening for a visit with her brother, David Smith, who resides near Topeka, and will also visit her sister, Mrs. A. B. Bowers at Eskridge. Her daughter, Mrs. William Harker, accompanied her on the trip." And this has nothing to do with genealogy, but as a bit of atmosphere of the times may be interesting: "There was all kinds of excitement in town for a little while Saturday evening: a political discussion almost precipitated a riot; it was hardly quieted down before a mule ran away with a cart, throwing the occupants out and hurting them considerably; two small boys had a fight, and another tried to break his neck by sliding down a long banister east of the Frisbie building; a dog fight ended up the evening's entertainment, and everybody went to bed feeling sure that they had gotten their money's worth. -- Meriden Tribune."

    3. Hi cousins, I received this on another list and thought you might be interested. I'll be setting this message aside to put up at the Homestead after I receive permission from the author. I hope you're all having a quiet, restful Wednesday evening. :) Colleen -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [B-W] Bauer versus and practicing a trade and belong to guild Resent-Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 12:37:10 -0700 Resent-From: BADEN-WURTTEMBERG-L@rootsweb.com Date: Wed, 09 May 2001 15:35:44 -0700 From: Deborah Friedrichs <deborahk@erols.com> To: BADEN-WURTTEMBERG-L@rootsweb.com Dear List, I found the following which may help explain some of the definitions we are looking for. Property, Production, and Family in Neckarhausen, 1700-1870 by David Sabean (Neckarhausen is in Wurttemberg) Page 62 We will stay with the contemporary term "Bauer" to describe someone who had sufficient land to be independent and who did not practice a trade or belong to a guild. In 1710, slightly more than half of the population were Bauern. By 1790, they had fallen to a third, and by 1870 to a quarter of the taxpaying Bürger. By the end of the eighteenth century a group of farm laborers had emerged, but its size fluctuated, since many artisans and Bauern worked for daily agricultrual wages for significant periods. ... Those involved in the food industry - coopers, bakers, and butchers often founded taverns - had ample opportunity to accumulate wealth after the turn of the century so that by 1870 several tavern keepers were among the wealthiest members of the village. Page 64 ,,,,,,,, In the eighteenth century, a large percentage of handicraftsmen outside the necessary carpenter, smith, baker, and wheelwright were weavers. All of these crafts necessitated local residency. Increasingly, weaving became a part-time activityfor some of the Bauern, and other seentary crafts emerged, such as shoemaking, which kept many individuals rooted in the village. But after 1800, growthwas concentrated in the building trades - among masons, stonecutters, pavers, plasterers, carpenters, and joiners - and most of these people worked outside the village for long periods of time. There was also a significant increase in unskilled work in raod, railroad, and canal construction, and in the burgeoning building industry. The following on pages 64 and 65 The changes in the relative wealth of village groups and the new regional mobility of the growing wage-earning population had policial consequences for the village itself. Athe the beginning of the eighteenth century, artisans were fully integrated into the power structure. ...... Altogether they held about half of the offices in the Gericht (court) and Rat (council). By 1790, however, they held ony 2 out of 23 offices, most of which were firmly in the hands of the Bauern. By then practically no one not in the top 25 percent of taxpayers was able to become a magistrate magistrate. Seven decades later, although fully fledged Bauern made up only 25 percent of the population, they still held 50 percent of the offices. In summary, in the early eighteenth century, Neckerhausen was a village of about 80 households and was dominated by land but had plenty of political scope for artisans. At the time, the average share per householdof the entire village land was about 17 acres. By the end of the century, the population had grown by about 70 percent, and the village was stratified in more complex ways. While the number of independent agricultural producers had expanded modestly, most of the population increase was taken up by wage-dependent, pauperized laborers and semiemployed craftsmen. The dualism of agricultureand petty commodity production gave way to a tripartite structure composed of relatively wealthy landowners, locally resident craftsmen (whose collective and individual wealth had for the most part been eroded), and a mobile group of workers available for seasonal opportunities in agriculture and construction. This last group grew throughout the nineteenth century, abosorbing most of the 70 percent increase in population to 1870. By then, thre were 220 households, and the average amount of land available for each of them had fallen by two-thirds, to around 6 acres. Fully subsistent Bauern now made up only 25percent of the population. By the end of the eighteenth century, local village power was firmly in the hands of the landed agricultural producers. Tehy maintained their policial ascendency inthe following period, sharing powere with those artisans and tavernkeepers who were able to capitalize on the economic expansion and who themselves owned just as much land as the richest Bauern. ==== BADEN-WURTTEMBERG Mailing List ==== To Unsubscribe/Subscribe & Search the Baden-Württemberg-L Web http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/DEU/BADEN-WURTTEMBERG.html To contact List Managers, email: BADEN-WURTTEMBERG-admin@rootsweb.com

    3. Sorry, I have been busy trying to get info into the Indiana site and not lose it. Indiana Bower(s) have been so generous with their info that I have a hard time, in the little computer time I have, to work on getting it all in but have got a new system and more knowledge of amount to put on each page, that it is going better now. I know I am putting too much into the site but I don't want to lose any of the info. It is so important. Just go to: http://www.crosswinds.net/~inbow/index.html If you are looking for Indiana cousins, scroll down to you see Indiana CousinFinder, click and there you are. Hopefully, everything will work now that I don't try to put all my info on one page. Hope the page numbers work for you. My own info is under Joel Bower. Sorry I rambled so much. Their daughter, Elmira LOVE married Jared SMITH, supposedly in Monroe Co MI, in1848, altho there is no record there. Elmira was my GGranny. Clarissa's father was Silas BOWERS, mother Marvel ? There is a writeup about the early pioneers in the "Firelands Pioneer", Nov1858, which states that Silas BOWERS came into Fairfield Twp in 1816. It describes how, in early 1818, he froze to death while hunting deer. In addition to Clarissa, he and Marvel also had a son Silas, who was also a minor when Silas died. Ring any bells? According to census records Seymour was in Warren Co, IL in 1900 then in Des Moines Co., IA in 1920 where he lived until he died in 1943. Can't find any information on Joseph. 3. Hi Colleen, I've been waiting but so far nobody has posted these Bowers, so here goes: Polly Bowers born Feb. 17, 1778 was born in Thompson, Windham, Ct. She married Joseph Sheffield March 7, 1799 in Dudley, Worcester, Ma. They move to New Berlin, Chenango, NY and raise about 7 children including Lurinda Sheffield who married John Brooks of Plymouth, Chenango NY. Lurinda was by tradition an Indian. This tradition is known through many different lines who had not shared research until the advent of the computer. The Plymouth, Chenango, NY Bowers' move to Grant County, WI. Polly Bowers was the daughter of John Bowers (born June 16 ,1732 in Killingly, Windham Ct.) and Rebeckah Carpenter who were married Nov. 6, 1755 in Dudley, Worcester, Ma. They had children Polly, Zelotes, Jerathmael,Calvin (all born in Killingly, Windham, Ct. and John (born in Dudly, Worcester, Ma.) John Bowers (father of Polly) was the son of John Bowers and Zerviah Amsden (daughter of John Amsden and Hannah Howe) They had children John, Benajah, Samuel, Sarah and Zerviah all born in Killingly, Windham, Ct. I believe John Bowers (grandfather of Polly) was the son of John Bowers and Elizebeth Wilder of Lancaster, Worcester, Ma. Does anyone else know of the Indian tradition of the Bowers line? and is anyone else strolling down this garden path? 3. I must have missed the request for a roll call. I would LOVE for someone to help me find a relative for my brick wall (alias my great-great-grandmother) Laura Bower. She seems to have no history prior to her 1892 marriage to George Maddox (born 1874) in Muncie, IN. (No parents listed on the marriage application.) They had two children together: Beulah in 1893 and Webster in 1896. She then divorced George (I'm anxiously awaiting the paperwork on that from Delaware Co.) The two children stayed with George and his widowed mother, Mary. Laura then at some point married two more times. Once was to a Charles Rawlins/Rollins and the other time was to a man with the last name Childs. I do not know which one was #2 and which was #3. I do not know when or where Laura died. I'm working on checking out a Laura Childs who died in Delaware Co, IN (Muncie area) about 1947. One additional point to note...Laura's son, Webster, enlisted in the Army for WW1 in Canton, OH. I see there are a lot of Bower(s) in that area and wondered if he may have been living with or visiting family there??? Anyone out there find my Laura in there database? 1. [BOWER] BOWERS (roll call) 1650 Lynn MA, Essex & New Haven CT
    2. I don't know much anything about this line of mine on my mother's side. Her mother was a Slawson, and in tracing the Slawsons back I found a direct line ancestor called BOWERS SLAWSON. BOWERS SLAWSON was born 6/21/1742 at Stamford CT. He married a Prudence Brown. They had many children. Apparently Bowers Slawson was s/o Lieut. James Slawson Jr. 1706-1758 and Elizabeth Howe 1708-1758. Elizabeth Howe was d/o Isaac Howe 1669-1733 and Elizabeth Waterbury Howe Weed. These folks lived in New Haven, CT, but Elizabeth came from Stamford. Isaac Howe's father was Nathaniel Howe 1650-1692, who married a "Miss Bowers" of New Haven CT. He may have had another spouse before or after Miss Bowers. I have the marriage date as 1670 at Fairfield, Fairfield Co. CT. Surely would like to know more about "Miss Bowers" and her family. I'm presuming these folks were English (as opposed to my German BOWER ancestors). Nathaniel Howe was born at Lynn MA, Essex Co., but died in Greenwich, Fairfield Co., CT. Does anybody recognize these folks? Jan T

    1. [BOWER] ROLL CALL: Bauer from Kleinbottwar, Wurttemburg, 1838
    2. My Bauer line doesn't seem to fit with anybody else's. Original immigrant: Stephen Gottlieb Bauer b 1/1/1799 at KleinBottwar, m. Maria Glock of Hoeneck. They came to America in 1838 and that same year converted to German Baptist Brethren (now Church of the Brethren or "Dunkard") at Aughwick Mills, PA. Their first son, Jacob Fredrick Bauer, was born 1836 in Germany and died young. The next son, Karl Gottlieb Bauer was born 1/17/1838 in Germany and emigrated with them; he was known as Charles Bower. He died at the Battle of Shiloh in the Civil War, a Union Army volunteer. (His Dunkard parents were much dismayed by his decision to enlist, which he did without telling them till it was a done deal.) He left a diary which tells of the time between his injuries in the Civil War and his death at Quincy, IL, several weeks later. He never married and had no children. John L. Bowers, the third son, was born in Huntingdon County PA 3/22/1840 and died 1/26/1917 in Spokane, WA. He married Elizabeth Roxana Guenther in 1866 in Lena, Stephenson Co., IL; they had 9 children. David Bower, the fourth son, was born in Huntingdon County PA 4/15/1842 and died 2/17/1932 in Bowmont, ID. He married Susanna Badger July 7, 1867 at Lena, Stephenson Co., IL. Her father was a Dunkard preacher. David & Susanna had six children (5 girls, 1 boy). Benjamin Bauer was born 1844 in PA and died of cholera May 1849 at Galena, IL, during the family's move from Huntingdon Co PA to Stephenson Co. IL. Samuel Bauer was born 1848 and died May, 1849 at Galena IL during the family's move from Huntingdon Co. PA to Stephenson Co. IL. Of the six sons, only two lived to marry and produce descendants. The family name was anglicized to BOWER by Stephen Gottlieb Bauer in 1851 at Stephenson Co., IL. I maintain a mailing list of descendants of Stephen Gottlieb & Maria Glock Bower and am always looking for more family members. We publish a quarterly family newsletter that includes family history and current stuff. Jan T
