Merton's brother Harold Bowers had a son named Paul Bowers, from one of his two marriages (to Louise or to Ethel A.). Paul was last heard from by Merton and Harold's sister Ethel, who apparently had contact with Paul in 1948. At that time, Paul was in either Tucson or Phoenix AZ. If this sounds familiar to you, drop me a line and please post to the group, as well! Thanks. Hello List, According to my grandfather's 1959 New Jersey death cert and 1936 SS application, my grandfather, WILLIAM CLAYTON BOWERS was born 29 Sept 1884 in Eckerty, Crawford County, Indiana, his father's name was CLIFFORD TILLMAN BOWERS and his mother's name was CLARA ADELIA LARKIN. Armed with this information, I wrote to Crawford County to obtain his birth record. I was sent two birth records, one for 1884 and one for 1888. The only thing that matches any of my info is father's name on 1884 record is listed as Clifford Bowers and Cliff Bowers on the 1888 record. 1884 Birth record Name of Child: this is blank Sex: Male No. of child of this Mother: 1st Still Birth: Not Race: W Color: W Date of Birth: Oct 12, 1884 Place of Birth: Boston, Ind Illegitimate: Not Nationality of Father: this is blank Place of Birth of Father: Ind Age: 21 Nationality of Mother: this is blank Place of Birth of Mother: Ind Age 20 Full name of Mother: this is blank Maiden name of Mother: Mark Residence of Mother: Boston Full name of Father: Clifford Bowers Occupation: Drummer Mother's Occupation: this is blank Name and address of Medical Attendant: C.D.Luckett, MD, address not listed Name and address of person making return: no name listed, address Boston Date of Return: Oct. 23, 1884 1888 Birth record Name of Child: Cliff Bowers Sex: Male No. of child of this Mother: 2 Still Birth: Not Race: this is blank Color: this is blank Date of Birth: June 3, 1888 Place of Birth: Eckerty, Ind Illegitimate: No Nationality of Father: Nat Place of birth of Father: Mitchell, Ind Age: 31 Nationality of Mother: Nat Place of birth of Mother: Mt. The children's birthdates are 4 years apart, but father's age listed for 1884 birth was 21 years old and father's age listed for 1888 birth was 31. If anyone thinks this might be your family, I would be more than happy to send the record to you. Fran Baldwin akabana@cs.com

They are reputed to be of English stock. First off, I can tell you from photos that go back to my gg-grandfather that all of the men in this family were tall, with dark brown or black hair and most with blue eyes. They were dark complected as well, taking a tan easily. Some of the brothers of my g-grandfather had extremely deep-set eyes, which made them look stern. If this look runs in your line (my uncle looks just like my gg-grandfather, so it has continued in my family for four generations) and any of the names and dates (many of which are approximate) match your info, PLEASE drop me a line. We might well be related!! This is my direct line, from now on back: ME V My mother was Kathryn Lucile Bowers, b. 11 Aug 1936 at Minneapolis, MN, d. 20 Jun 1993 at Stony Brook, NY. Her brother is Warner Fremont Bowers II, b. 29 Jan 1939 at Minneapolis, MN. V My grandfather was Dr. Warner Fremont Bowers I, b. 2 Feb 1906 at Jeffersonville, IN, d. 15 May 1994 at Stony Brook, NY. He married Lucile Margaret Hinzie (b. 25 Sep 1905 at Omaha, NE, d. 22 Feb 1985 at Huntington, NY) on 25 Jun 1931 at Omaha, NE. He was an only child. V My g-grandfather was Merton Aubrey Bowers, b. 22 Dec 1872 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN, d. 3 Mar 1949 at Bay Pines, FL. He married Deborah Dorcas Schutt (b. 20 Aug 1871 at Fithian IL, d. Bay Pines, FL) in 1901, probably in Indiana or Illinois. They are both buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Merton was career military, serving in the quartermaster corps. in the Philippines and the Canal Zone early in the 20th century. Merton had 5 siblings: Harold Bowers, b. in 188? at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN. Harold married Ethel A., who died (possibly) in Indianapolis. I know that, at one point, Harold was rumored to have lived in Indianapolis. Harold had a second wife named Louise. Here my knowledge of Harold ends. IF anyone out there has info, I'd love to have it. I'd like to find cousins here in Indiana. Herbert Bowers, b. 188? at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN. He might have been a bachelor. Here my knowledge of Herbert ends. IF anyone out there has info, I'd love to have it. I'd like to find cousins here in Indiana. Theodore Bowers, b. 188? at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN. He might have been a bachelor. Here my knowledge of Theodore ends. IF anyone out there has info, I'd love to have it. I'd like to find cousins here in Indiana. Stella A. Bowers, b. 1883 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN, d. 1932 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN, of a ruptured appendix. She never married. Ethel Bowers, b. 5 Oct 1885 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN, m. in Washington DC to Mr. Morse, d. May 1968 at Washington DC. V My gg-grandfather was Homer Bowers, b. 20 Aug 1845 at Vienna, Rush Co., IN, d. 5 Nov 1902 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN. He married Emma Cleora Walker (b. 28 Feb 1848 at Lexington KY, d. 22 Sep 1924 at New Ross, Montgomery Co., IN) on 20 Aug 1870. Homer was a country doctor in New Ross, IN who did a year or two of medical school at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1864-1865. Homer was a Cornish Rite Mason in New Ross/Crawfordsville, IN. Homer had 5, 6 or 7 siblings, according to various census records: poss. Catherine Bowers, b. 1843 poss. Alice Bowers, b. 1848 Webster Bowers, b. 1854 Dayton and Freemont (or Fremont) Bowers, twins b. 1857 Edward and Emma Bowers, twins b. 1859 Dayton was said to have "gone West" according to family lore, and my grandfather was always pissed off that I couldn't find anything about him. I still can't, as is true for his siblings. If you have anything on these people, please drop me a line. V My ggg-grandfather was William Bowers, b.1822, possibly in Ohio and possibly in Kentucky. He married Sarah Chenoweth, (b.1825 at Jefferson Co., IN. Sarah Chenoweth's parents, James Chenoweth and Rachell Hill, were a part of the family that settled Louisville, KY. I know painfully little about William Bowers. I have some papers that show that he had some sort of store and was in debt, but paid those debts back. The store was, I think, in Ohio. Here the line ends, for me. I have no idea whether William had siblings because I have no idea who his parents were. I received an email from this list a year or two ago that had very helpful info which, according to some birth dates, tentatively tied William to Denman Aaron Bowers (b. bef. 1805) and Matilda Shields, as their son, but that email was eaten when my last computer died. Denman's parents were Phineas Bowers, b. 1765 at Providence, Morris Co., NJ and Sarah Connet, b. 23 Feb 1773. I have no idea whether I tie exists here or not. I'd love help with this. Hi cousins, I received this message from a woman who visited the Cottage and found a relative in the GEDCOM database. I recognize the name, but don't remember who descends from Joel and Sarah, so I'm sending this to everyone. Will Joel and Sarah's descendant please contact this woman? I've already responded to all her questions regarding navigating the database, etc. You'll just need to establish contact with this inline cousin. I have asked her to join us, but haven't heard back from her yet. Thanks. On this day we remember our fallen military, and to those people who know why we celebrate this day, it brings a sense of somberness to an individual. I am the granddaughter of a World War I veteran, the daughter of a retired Navy/Army career man, and the wife of a career soldier. How lucky I feel every day to know that all three of these heroes lived full lives, though two have since passed on. I feel such gratitude for my heroes ~ for had they not done their part and made their impact on American life, I/you/we might not be living the lives we enjoy today. However, it isn't just the heroes in my own personal life I am in awe of, but all those military men and women who did their parts, too. And today, just like every year, I think also of our international cousins' heroes who fulfilled their roles that all we "youngsters" could live in free countries. So, today I say "thank you." Thank you to every one of you immortal souls who have passed on but are not forgotten. I also choose this moment to say "thank you" to every one of you old veterans and retirees who have stories that cause shivers; and thank you to our soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen of today, because your being "there" ensures our tomorrows. I wish each of you and happy, safe and sunny Memorial Day. Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you. Terry, I have a hunch that your Reuben Bowers may somehow be associated with a Samuel Bowers and David Corwin Bowers. I also believe there might have been a younger Reuben Bowers, possibly named after your Reuben Bowers. The younger Reuben may have been David's cousin( Your Reuben had a son Rueben who was listed in Tazewell Co 1850 census at age 7), and possibly the Older Reuben and Samuel were brothers. Thinking possibly David's father might have been Samuel, but have no evidence to that. The reason I think this is that we find a Reuben Bowers in the 1830 Census in Hamilton Co., Cincinnati 5th Ward. We also find an Abner Corwin and David Corwin also Hamilton Co., Cincinnati 5th Ward. Our David Corwin Bowers was born in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co, Ohio sometime in 1830. The thinking being that possibly David's mothers maiden name was Corwin, and that our David Corwin Bowers might have been named after this David Corwin. In 1840 we find a Samuel Bowers in Hamilton Co. Cincinnati 5th Ward and also a D.W. Corwin. However we also find a Samuel Bowers on the 1840 Census in Logan Co. Illinois. He is head of household age 40-50--There is a female age 60-70, so probably not his wife. perhaps his mother or mother-in-law.. he also has a son in the 5 - 10 age group and also 1 in the 10-15 age group. Either one of these sons could have been our David Corwin Bowers. No wife is listed here Our David Corwin Bowers shows up in the 1850 census for Logan Co., Illinois at the age af 20. A Samuel Bowers purchased land from the BLM in Logan Co. issue date of warrant was March 3, 1843. He probably was already living on the land before this purchase. Samuel does not appear in the 1850 census for Logan Co. He might have died or moved elsewhere. I requested a search for Bowers in Tazewell, Co., Illinois and find your Reuben Bowers age 49-born NY -Farmer Sasetta age 45- born Ky. Sarah age 27-born Ohio Rebecca age 25 -born Ohio Nathan age 23 born Ohio --fiddler Daniel age 21 born Ohio--laborer Clark age 19 born Ohio--laborer Isaac age 16 born Ohio--Laborer Mary age 14 born Ohio Susan age 12 born Illinois Rueben age 7 born Illinois Anna Maria age 4 born Illinois Melissa age 2 born Illinois Our David Corwin Bowers enlists in the Illinois Volunteers Company E, Reg. 71 for a period of 3 months. Mustered in July 22, 1862--mustered out Oct. 29th 1862. He was living in Lancaster Illinois at that time of enlistment. He enlists again in Illinois Volunteers Company K Reg. 108 for a period of 3 years. mustered in in Peoria , Illinois January 5th, 1864. Discharged inMontgomery, Alabama January 25, 1865 on a surgeons certificate of disability. He was living in Greenland Illinois at time of enlistment. ( He was injured while on duty in Mississippi) Listed below him is a Reuben Bowers age 20 (this could be your younger Reuben- although he should have been age 22 if he was age 7 in 1850.) His birthplace is listed as Logan, Illinois. He joined Feb. 11, 1865. His residence is listed as Marshall, Illinois. Our David Corwin Bowers returned to Illinois after his military Service. He is said to have been residing in Colchester, Illinois in 1870 and was working in farming and as a general laborer. He died Feb. 9, 1876 in Tazewell, Co. The patterns of where these people lived at various times lead me to believe a possible connection. We know that after David's death, his wife, Nancy W. (Carey) Bowers, moved to Clarksville Delaware with the children. We believe at least some of David's children were living in Philadelphia, Pa in abt 1895. Believe Albin was living in Pearlington, Hancock Co., Ms. In 1902 John Franklin Bowers was living at 2000 S. 17th St. Philadelphia, Pa. Albert was living in Clarksville, Delaware, --Believe Maranda was also living in Delaware. (Maranda married a Thomas Mitchell) David also had another son, Cornelius Philander Bowers.. David Bowers is listed on pg. 372--History of Tazewell Co. 1879 and pg. 785,History of Tazewell Co., 1905, according to the Tazewell Co Genealogical and Historical Society. Don't know if any of this makes sense to you, or if there is a connection, but think there is a good possiblity that somewhere tese people connect. Diana
